Can you explain the time delay usually use after the target behavior is elicited, like waiting 5 secs after the unwanted behavior shows and then reinforcing an alternative?
I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you please clarify? It sounds like you might be describing differential reinforcement. One might wait some set amount of time after a target behavior occurs before providing that reinforcement to avoid reinforcing that target behavior inadvertently. However, the term "time delay" usually refers to delaying the presentation of a prompt to engage in a behavior that is being increased, for the purpose of fading that prompt out and increasing independence.
