@@Scoddygoat The Supreme Court only did that regarding one particular challenge brought by John Anthony Castro, a little-known candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, who sued Trump earlier this year in an effort to disqualify him from running for president and holding the office “given his alleged provision of aid or comfort to the convicted criminals and insurrectionist that violently attacked our United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.”
A lower court had thrown out Castro’s case, ruling that he lacked the legal right or standing to bring the challenge, and his petition to the high court had asked the justices to decide whether he did have standing in the matter.
There are other challenges though still pending against Trump in Minnesota and Colorado, which are scheduled for trials later this year.
He came because he told the judge in Michael Cohen’s case he couldn’t do his deposition because of this trial. Therefore, he HAD to or be held in contempt!
Indeed, he doesn’t have to be in NY but Mr Angry wants to be there because it causes the greatest suffering to him. If he loses big in NY everything else is just part of the end. 🍿
I'm not a lawyer, I have filed one civil case in my life, and I remember at the bottom of the form it asked if I would like a jury trial. If that section is left blank the default is no jury. It's not very complicated.

What Lovett is saying at 43:30 about democracy is very significant. It sounds silly to people who are really engaged with the subject, but there are people out there who aren't, and they don't honestly know or understand the significance of democracy and what the loss of it would mean. Democracy 101 has to be part of the message for those voters.

I was working at a record store in 1969 when the owner stopped a man for shoplifting an 8 track tape. The man truned to run and my boss pulled the trigger on his darringer. The bullet glanced off the sholder blade, rolled up the spine and lodging in the neck. The man was instantly paralyzed from the neck down. Because the man had recently been released from prision the whole the was hushed up. Because no one was there to advocate for the man he was allowed to die. Seeing someone basically shot dead for stealing an 8 track tape has been a trauma in my life. I think bullets should be controlled like perscription drugs -- the second amendment does not saying anything about a person's right to own or use bullets. What a horrible death to be paralyzed and knowing no one cares -- that you are being allowed to slowly die. I was the one who put the littter on the blood buddle and washed the sidewalk.

Trump did not forget to ask for a jury, his attorneys checked the box indicating that they wanted a trial by judge.
yes, it is not a mistake or "the system is against me" they thought they would get a better deal with a judge, and some things, as I understand, don't need a jury.
I’ve heard the opposite. You apparently need to check a box to request a jury and when you don’t check the box it becomes a bench trial! If they TRULY wanted a jury, his lawyer(s) screwed up! But it’s always possible they wanted a bench trial so Trump could claim he was DENIED a jury! Either way, Trump is going to lie, whine, complain, and make unfounded accusations!

I think the media should cover the social media reaction to Trump. Show what his followers are saying and how many there are. His followers reacted like this and this was how many people said it. Put faces on the TV and show their banality and fever. Trump controls everything, so giving him more air time helps him. People just need to see whether this is having an effect on a large majority of people or it's having no effect at all. Cover the crowd not Trump.

I understand that Trump thinks he can pardon himself from Federal felony trials, but how can the President overturn civil trial results?
He cannot. The only recourse available to the former President is the same for everyone else: appeal. This applies to both the civil trial and the state-based trial in Georgia.
Pardons apply to criminal convictions not civil cases.
If he becomes dictator, he will shoot anybody that disagrees with him over anything until there is no resistance against him about anything. Dictators get rid of the press that is part of a free society first so we don't hear all the details of what he would be doingbehind our backs to control us. Evidently you don't have a full understanding of how autocratic leaders assume and keep power. They take all the power and money and the rest us of work for their betterment and our detriment. Wealthy people and corporations never have contributed to American workers. American workers and the Unions built America into the greatest free country in the entire world. Small business owners with new ideas and hard work built America. Money doesn't trickled down. Anyone who believes we need a multiparty system needs only to look at the House today. It would be exactly like this every day if we had multiple parties. Just look at the Prime Minister in Britain -- they're never sure they'll have a job tomorrow.

We are at an historical point where enough people who lived through fascism's spread in the 1930s-40s are no longer with us. There are few Holocaust (Shoah) survivor's alive. There is a lack of appreciation. My mother, who is nearly 90, laments that she never thought she would see what's going on in our country today. My late father was a WWII vet. My mother is fearful of a retribution-filled Trump term. We are Queens New Yorkers, so we're very aware of the Trump family and foresaw the behaviors that garnered more public exposure in 2015 onward. Biden may not be ideal, but we cannot go with the alternative. I look forward to my current governor, Newsom, in the White House soon.
We should never forget what happened in WWII and what led up to it! Not only because minority groups and the vulnerable were targeted but because it was *ordinary people* who powered the fascist “machine” and allowed the Holocaust to happen. It has happened elsewhere in the world, but not at the same scale, for the same reasons. It takes an authoritarian dictator to lead but also millions of ordinary people to follow.

I agree that there needs to be more discussion on the benefits of democracy. However, when I’ve spoken to young people, I hear from them that capitalism as practiced in the US is an anti-democratic force. They do not think we can have a true democracy given how capitalism is practiced in our country. I think until you address how people are currently forced to live and work and eke by under our current form of capitalism, you cannot expect them to fully appreciate the benefits democracy. They just aren’t able to see how democracy benefits them. They see our current form of capitalism as facilitating authoritarianism.

It was once thought that putting a spending limit on the Feds would help keep us out of debt and less involved in wars. That was before infinite money was invented, however. Nowadays, we see the value in limitless spending and non stop wars.
Baseline funding IS guaranteed. Some arms of the government cannot be shutdown and will receive funding at all times. The most obvious (and extreme) example would be the strategic nuke command. Those guys and those facilities are guaranteed funding because, well, it's probably not a good idea not to fund them.
Unfortunately our system isn’t that sane.
