Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

The condescension towards advocates of Palestinians isn’t helping. I studied Middle Eastern history in college, I have written about the history of Israel, and I hold a complex and nuanced position that includes Israel’s fundamental place in the world. Yet I am continually painted with a broad brush if I voice concerns for the plight of the people subsisting in the Gaza prison. I understand there are plenty of people who hold hateful positions, and we can condemn them together, but not if you’re busy lumping me in with them.
Loved the show, loved everyone on the stage, thank you for keeping a meaningful conversation going about everything that’s happening.

Excerpted from a NYTimes article today by Charles M. Blow:
I think it would be a great mistake to bemoan the position taken by many of these young people - the seekers of context, not the defenders of terrorism, of course - rather than seek to understand it.
In politics, you convert people by convincing them, not condemning them.
Is there antisemitism coming from some in the debate over this conflict? Yes, and that must be called out. But you can be opposed to Israeli government policies without being antisemitic, so we should take care not to conflate all opposition to Israeli government policies with hatred of Jewish people. Lumping together any kind of support for Palestinians in this moment as inherently hostile to Israel’s Jewish citizens and to Jewish people around the world is also problematic - and intellectually dishonest.

@@silverXnoiseit's interesting how everyone is quick to make sure to point there is some anti-Semitism in some of the pro-Palestinians but no one dares to mention the gross Islamophobia and abject dehumanizing of the Palestinians by so many of the Pro-Isrealis. The amount of Israeli government members or mouthpieces who have called all Palestinians animals or worse is unbelievable. Even the most effort at critiquing Israel much be done with a soft touch lest they come for your life. Even fair and balanced is unbalanced. There is huge irony in a group insisting tropes about them aren't true by embracing and displaying those exact same tropes.

It really isn't. The hivemind approach the Democrats have taken is a sign that the government is not working. Members of Congress should not be more concerned with funding their next election than with serving the people who sent them there. Democrats have no problem bemoaning how the Republicans fell in line with Trump but when they did the same with Nancy Pelosi y'all want to applaud them. This is the exact reason Congress has done nothing for the people in decades except fund endless wars.
What is more toddler behavior than getting the rules changed so that grown "professional" men and women can dress like hobos and then crying because everyone thought it was a ridiculous idea?

It needs to be genuine not the lip service of the past 25/30 years. Google who controls Gaza water and why Israel recently poured cement into Gaza water wells. Also google why Israel is allowed to have a higher rate of causality of innocent civilian life vs targets then any other country in the world. Just because you have an official policy that says we don't target civilians but your allowed ratio is 1/100 ie one target to 100 innocent civilian deaths. Does not make this right. You have an defacto genocide and collective punishment policy. Also google the British Balfour declaration. Rest is politic podcast have done a good piece on it.

I'd like to say they haven't learned a lesson after the Iraq War but that would be naive. They know full well that the unimaginable terror they are inflicting on the people of Gaza will "radicalize" many who who are left, if they kill everyone, the nuns the doctors the children then there will be even more people turning against Israel and the US. They want this to go on forever, more "terrorists " more justification to demonize innocent people and bomb them too. Its a never ending cycle. The US will sell everyone weapons and Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon shareholders will get even richer and buy more politicians. I'm starting to think those crazy conspiracies about us being ruled by malevolent aliens in human skin suits may be on to something 🤔

I"m 28 and have always had issues overall w/ the dem platform, but i voted for them bc I believed they were trying to do more good for our country than harm. I know 2024 is a crucial election and donald trump is an existential threat to our democracy, but I am really struggling after this week squaring voting for joe biden next year. Anyone who knew anything about israel and palestine knew the humanitarian crisis was coming, and that the events of October 7th did not happen in a vacuum. Let me be clear, like everyone says, what Hamas did was horrifying and scary, so I understand the desire for revenge. But we as a democratic nation, one that is supposed to stand as a beacon to the rest of the world for democracy are funding this genocide. What credibility do we have to champion democracy at all moving forward. (not that we had the best track record historically, but I thought we were making a cultural change and learning from the 20-year 'war on terror' and its failures.) And yet, Biden's still supporting massive aid packages to Israel with essentially no concessions for civilian lives. I feel so despondent and disheartened by my party and my country.

It’s obvious they don’t actually understand the issue when they point the finger at Netanyahu/his coalition… it’s this weird liberal fantasy where they only see foreign policy through a domestic center-left lens and find “right-wing” boogeymen around the world to blame for conditions in other countries that are nothing like the U.S. It’s genuinely disturbing how common this viewpoint is. *This* kind of crap is the quintessential example of the difference between progressives and liberals. One group stands in solidarity with people who are oppressed when it’s an extremely unpopular opinion to have, and the world is forced to recognize their struggle and get comfortable with it. Then the Democratic party just sort of fools themselves and pretends like it was a mainstream issue they cared about the entire time. When you look at history of gay rights, trans right, labor rights, Apartheid South Africa, etc. you see the same pattern over and over again.

The focus on 'messaging' isn't the solution it's part of the problem. The last thing we need is more marketing, we need real time action. As vital as longer term solutions like the infrastructure bill etc. are, immediate help is also critical. Problems like homelessness, climate catastrophe, shootings, and a lethally broken healthcare system can't wait for years long projects they need to be addressed as the catastrophic disasters that they are ,right now the response is worse than the negligence after Katrina. If World Central Kitchen can do the amazing courageous things that they do we can all do better than wasting resources on "messaging"

It's kind of a tragedy, Free Palestine is the broadest humanitarian cause on Earth spanning decades. I remember Muhammad Ali marching for Palestine in the 80s. After last Sunday, it kind of split into two frames. Jihadis jumped on it real quick. But they are not what Free Palestine means in the west..
Over here, in other western nations, the support for free Palestine is about our steadfastness towards liberal values. It is a test of our hypocrisy in stark terms - our government funds the side that oppresses. It is non-negotiably unacceptable.
I was young when I first marched free Palestine in 2008.. again in 2011, 2014 (this was a big one), 2018, 2021... I never saw jihadis in those crowds. Search up old articles documenting them in photos, no Nazi or RuZZian or Taliban stuff.
So it's a bit sad, and it's worth addressing. As for Senator Fetterman - I applaud his call for aid but in his failure to call for a ceasefire, he is alienating the entire free Palestine movement - and they all vote Democrat.
President Biden should keep this in mind as well. I don't support Cornell West but don't be shocked if they support the guy calling it like it is vs the guy doing photo ops in Tel Aviv.

Heather Cox Richardson, a historian who I just discovered who is apparently very popular before I discovered her, has a video series on the history of the Republican party and it's fascinating. I think I watched 4 parts of it, up to basically the end of reconstruction. She presents some interesting contradictions between the declaration of independence and the constitution, the constituion being more about protecting property than equality of opportunity being her thesis on it.
but lets be real, the fact that pod save america exists is a sign that we failed a long fuckin time ago, im against villifying people who are doing more than the people doing the villfying. Unless someones interested in fighting a civil war, trying to work within the system we have is the most rational idea at this point in time, all major change in the history of this country has taken place incrementally, thats just how it is. We take for granted our relatively high standard of living and distance from serious conflict, if we didnt have special interest oligarchs again (the confederacy was an oligarchical type society as well, for the record) who are really pulling the strings of the politicians, we'd maybe see an improvement.

If there were a solution to be had in the former Protectorate in nearly 8 decades, surely there would have been one by now. There have been generations of earnest negotiators on both sides. Doesn't work. Western Christians must now accept that they created this horror, first with antisemitism, then with anti-Arab colonialism, and give up their own land to solve this problem.

People who are not of your tribe will live in any country of any size so it's time to give up on the idea of a Jewish state. A name change and or a flag change might be in order.
And Israeli Arabs especially those in the occupied areas need to understand that if they don't vote they don't get to criticize shit. In a democracy you get the government you deserve and if you don't vote at all you are SOL. And no violence is not a suitable substitute for voting. Agreed. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.

In 40 years, I have NEVER been polled! WTAF?

You live in the wrong place. I live in a state that the media calls a battleground state every election (the state is bloody red). I get polled all the time. The questions are very bad. You can tell they write their questions with an answer in mind; so I don't trust polls much, especially those from conservative groups.

Finally getting a chance to watch after the fact....I am a poll worker all week and Saturday. Haven't seen it yet, but I know it was great. KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK!!!

Israeli IDF is just as bad if not worse than Hamas. And is not deserving of our unquestioned support

Kudos to John Fetterman for normalizing accommodations and reminding everyone that being non-disabled is a temporary condition.
