Considering how many reporters, journalists and news papers are based in New York City, it’s crazy that a guy running in New York flew under their radar is inexcusable
New York politics is a blindspot precisely for that reason. Despite all the news being based there, the assumption is that NY is a very safe blue state, so if anything is going to make news there - it's going to attack the Dems because they're assumed to win. But as example, AOC primaried a decades-long established Democrat who didn't even show up to any of their scheduled debates, or advertise himself, because he assumed he was safe until AOC eeked out a victory: that's how powerful NY Dem-momentum feels (but my point is the feel isn't necessarily accurate). HRC moved to NY to run for Senator because similarly, it was a safe bet to quickly make her a Senator (and that's not an HRC attack, that's SOP in politics, Liz Cheney moved to Wyoming for the same reason, etc). All the media in NY either assumes the Dem will win, or the Republican who wins must have been an immaculate candidate running as one of the most moderate Republicans in the country: a boring story. Hopefully Santos changes the narrative for NY politics, and puts a spotlight on the NY Republicans.
The saddest part to me is that a lot of these GOP House members represent very poor, very rural areas of the country that desperately need investment in infrastructure, education, renwable energy, etc. but the voting population does not seem to understand that they're electing what amounts to twitter celebrities. And they don't seem to care so long as they have groups of people to kick down at and feel superior to as their communities and way of life rot around them due to their own ignorance. How do you reason with someone so entrenched in the "culture wars" that they're constantly shooting themselves in the foot and gleeful about it?

Unfortunately this still shows the cancer that is US Politics. As a UK/US Citizen, if the party in control wins fair and square, I feel both parties have a duty to acknowledge the leader of that party the rightful speaker. Although the moment is somewhat funny for the short term, it just continues to erode for the long term and puts us on a unsustainable path for the future.
I know you're right, I really, really do. The foolish optimist in me hopes that if this BS trudges on long enough Republicans could see the sheer ungovernable incompetence of the current iteration of the party and that, in keeping with 2020 and the 2022 midterms, show that this is a party in need of enormous and substantial reform and a movement toward sanity.
