What drew me to Vesperia is Symphonia. The best story in any game ever for me personally, so I tried Vesperia back when it came out and never liked it as much as Symphonia. But now I've played the definitive edition and its really really good. Way better than it was before and the end game is huge! And the combat in this game is alot of fun Berseria and Xilia didnt draw my attention because of their art styles. I feel like symphonia and vesperia much more believeable worlds. Amazing game Vesperia is.
Playing Berseria actually makes me a little pissed off because the combat system is just absolutely inferior to the traditional Tales combat. I really dislike that all the face buttons are for your artes, and the flow of combos that way just doesn’t make sense too me. Like I genuinely can’t figure out a smooth string of combos incorporating all different artes in all the different placements in the combo sequences, and have the combo actually make sense. It’s just a fucking hot of a battle system. I thanked the lord when Arise came out and the combat mechanics had all be sort taken back to their roots but was still revamped enough to feel fresh and contemporary. I’m not sure how this is gonna land but, the only redeeming quality of Berseria is its story but even still I’d really rather not ever play it.
I just finished the main story last week and it was amazing. The characters each have their own story and you bond with em better than some other more recent tales of games. The only thing I didn’t like, was with how the ending was handled. No spoilers no worries. But it could’ve been fleshed out more, but it was still a good ending. To those just playing it, so as much side quests as possible as these help flesh out the story of the characters and even learn about their past, and what they wish to do once everything settles,...there’s a lot you’ll find out by doing side quests that the main story won’t provide. It’s an adventure that I recommend to take your time with. Plus is you want to be a completionist, there is a checklist guide for the game as it’s split into 3 parts.
I really like how Yuri isn't some generic nice-guy and is funny and loves teasing people. Also, he is actually quite smooth with the ladies and doesn't turn into a jittering mess when women flirt with him (like most Japanese protagonists).
Thank goodness, finally a developed character closer to a little realism. Protagonist's falling into blubbering messes is often so irritating in Japanese media.
Also he is morally grey. He isn’t “I’m gonna do the right thing because I’m a very good guy”. He legit murders people in cold blood that the law can’t bring to justice and the justice system fails to do so.
I’m currently playing this game and I’m about 45 hours in. I’m almost in Ark 3 and it really has grown on me. At first it was hard to get into it (because the story was kinda slow) but I felt like ark 2 was where it really started getting good!
Just got this, basically for free since I've had 16 dollars in credit on the nintendo e-shop for a while and this game was on sale at $14.99 (70% off). So I got it and it truly is mind-blowingly good. Pure JRPG goodness.
I have seen that, they're certainly different and given the choice between them I'd say I prefer Berseria but I think Vesperia is a solid game that others should give a chance.
Thanks Darryl, I'm glad to have the subscribers I do have and I've seen decently steady growth recently. Hopefully that continues, but it's hard to predict, that's just TH-cam for you.
Thanks PapaBless, yeah the Tales series has been fun to get into. Both Vesperia and Berseria have been excellent games and I'm excited for Arise when it arrives next year.
caught this on sale yesterday at the last possible moment, i'm beside myself with hype! never properly gotten into a tales game before so i'm really excited to finally get into such an iconic series
tales of symphonia is good too but when i replay it something that vesperia dont have is shi*** puzzle/maze that you gonna try to find a solution...there some dungeon but there fun eneugh too be able to remember ...
Really excited to play this. Tales of Symphonia was one of my very favorite Gamecube games. I don't know why I've never played any of the other "Tales" games. This and your Berseria were super helpful in deciding which ones to play first~
Why you should play Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition: because it’s one of the best Tales games ever made. There, saved you some time. Vesperia is a must play for anyone wanting to get into the series for the first time. It’s just similar enough to Symphonia that you still get a classic tales experience, specifically in the combat, but modern enough to not feel like a fucking slog. Personally the absolute MUST PLAYS for the series has gotta be Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, and Arise. Other’s I’d recommend trying would be Graces F, Xillia, and maaaaaaybe Zesteria. But the previous for titles I mentioned are absolutely must plays for the series. They just perfectly incapsulate what the series was, is, and will become further in the future. Absolutely quintessential titles for the series.
Synthesis is important, it is a bit of a mess due to the level up system but the weapon upgrades are very important. Skills matter in Vesperia, get them. They massively improve the gameplay.
I played graces and finished it long time ago and never really touched the series for a while. I decided to play these games again and started with berseria and absolutely loved it. Played arise after and it was good but kinda getting bored of it a few hours after beating ganabelt and just started on vesperia and this game is amazing so far. Loving everything about it and can't wait to finish it
I've been buying the Tales series on steam for years when on special, and recently decided to put time aside to play them starting with Symphonia which made me kick myself for not playing it sooner. I just finished Vesperia on the PS5, encountered the same volume issues which were rectified by tuning the volume for BMD. Skits etc in the option. Just a simply amazing game with memorable characters and story. I feel this would be a good starting point to anyone want to get into Tales games as, unlike Symphonia, has a great tutorial telling you how the game mechanics work.
@@CommRio holy shit! Damn man congrats! Keep up the good work bro. Do you think you could do a video on tales of the abyss or berseria? I’d love to hear your thoughts on those
From playing a good amount of RPGs I'd say Vesperia is worth playing for the overall story and action-RPG gameplay it offers, but not for the character driven plot, which is very messy (which I discovered on a revisit). Vesperia has a lot of good things but it does come with some flaws that hinder it from being a better RPG: it suffers from a lot of repetition in dialogue (it does help me understand, but a lot of people don't like how much it happens), lots of scenes are forgettable, and it is kinda aimless (refering back to character driven plot). but back to the good things, the overall story (about the blastia and barriers and their impact on the world) was very nice to see it develop and conclude. 7:33 A lot of good stuff comes from synthesizing and it just demands mats that you can get from enemies in the map or dungeons, I would recommend to not skip it since it gives you many benefits and it's not too hard to complete said demands, of course others do require a more specific enemy or even a boss but it would still be very beneficial use the system even without synthesizing the more advanced weapons or equipment you can get. Overall, you did a pretty fair review, I expected more of this game when I played it since I was told it was the best in the series but it turned out to be a 7/10 game. I do like a lot of the scenes but most are not memorable, I like the cast a lot and I didn't mention gameplay: which I also like but dislike some stuff about it too. Vesperia is a nice game but could use some improvements to be a better RPG.
Great review, makes me want to try this out. But I'm told the save system is very poor, similar to Final Fantasy VII and the classic Resident Evil series, where you can go hours without a save? Is that so? FYI: 80% off on Steam, $11.39AUD till 9th July, 2021. (Wow that's cheap)
Yeah the sales for the Tales of games especially on Steam are very generous. As to the save system yes you can only save at set save points and there is no auto save, I'm not sure I'd say hours in between saves though since I don't think I ever had problems with finding a good point to save. Obviously other people's experiences may differ though.
I always get excited for a new tales game, then I play it for 20 minutes and the first boss battle reminds me why i did care for the series to begin with...
Hey, nice video! I’m playing it right now, my first tales of game since Xillia 2 and I’m loving it. Was really in the mood for a great jrpg game, and it hits the right spots for sure! Cheers !
I have tried this game on my PS4, but what made me return is is the fact that you can no longer rename the characters, especially that such a feature was available in the original games. I found that being able to rename the characters connects you to the story and characters more when we play RPG games. If it wasn’t for this being removed, I would have kept this game.
good video man. I played Vesperia already before watching this and it was fun, but you can indeed see it has aged. Some good points were made here, and it is good you did not overhype like other fans. Also, if you loved Berseria, try zestiria when its on sale, it is not the best of the series but still really enjoyable. Dont look at the hate too much on this game as it still is solid, especially in the music departement, damn
This is a great game!!!.. ok, ok. . . .. is like playing an interactive manga/anime, but the story is just something else, it turns dark when you least expect it (in a good and exciting way). . The game mechanics are interesting and alluring so no complain here.
@@kosterix123 well good for you, I guess. I've played Symphonia recently in PC after getting it for about.... $2 to $3 (and I bought it since it was very bloody cheap) and after playing about... 1 hour (?) I decided to stop since the keybinding for the battle is atrocious and it's not very customizable.
Just grinding Grade for the next playthrough now. Not sure if there is a faster method for first playthrough saves. I am new to it, since this is my second Tales of Game with a completed main story. I had to get Flynn's Benevolent Beneficiary title first. Now he looks like a certain Star Ocean character. Edit: I never played the original on Xbox. I love this game on the Switch, on a handheld.
Lots of talk of Tales of Symphonia, however no one mentioned the PS3 port of both Symphonia? Both in 1 package. Couldn't remember 1 or 2 discs cuz didn't play much & my PS3 optical drive broke. Loves ToV so much ever since XB360. I bought the console solely wanted to try out the game, but fell in love with it while progressing the game. However it's still so difficult facing Gattuso on first play through. Threw controller on the couch so many times when playing DE on PS4
And it's done. The game was a lot of fun mostly thanks to its exceptional cast of characters and their interactions, but perhaps coming to this right after Ys VIII was a mistake, because it made me really notice that this is indeed a game that's almost a decade and half old. The gameplay doesn't seem to have aged that well. Still well worth playing for the story and characters though.
So obviously a lot of it is personal opinion. I think combat wise and character wise Berseria is stronger, although that’s partially because I think Berseria is extremely good in those areas. The story of Vesperia is lighter in general but isn’t afraid to tackle some darker topics especially with their main character Yuri. I really enjoyed the world building in Vesperia and the environment is quite nice. Simply put it’s a really solid Tales of game, that in my opinion doesn’t quite reach Berseria’s level but is a worthwhile game to pick up if you enjoy the series.
@@Iychoenk there is quite a lot of both as well as a coliseum for each char with good rewards and the labyrinth of memories which has a very cool final boss and some hidden dungeons that will eat up many more hours after you play the main story
Great take on the review, but I have to disagree on the customization. Excluding certain sidequests and certain items, most of the character's best weapons and skills come from synthesis weapons
This is a pretty cool game. I'd play this again. My only complaint about it is yelling out and telling your enemy each move you're about to do. Gets annoying, doesn't make sense, and seems like there'd be tons of parodies of it. I know anime games do that all time but seriously, it's pretty annoying. I also did not like the kid but I do tolerate him. I gotta play this again one of these days. Overall though, very good game! And the girls are hot! Lol!
Welp thats literally all japanese anime shit yelling out your attacks for no reason is just something you have to get used to. Also its not as annoying in japanese imo lol
Some of the footage was lower quality than others, that was because of capturing problems not the game itself. Handheld was pretty good, I just had some troubles with combat on the Switch preventing me from doing moves as quickly or precisely as I would have liked.
@@kosterix123 because you can't (as far as I know) remap the controls there were certain moves that I found too difficult for me to do precisely when playing so I just didn't use some of them. Didn't affect the gameplay too much.
It is a Tales game so the action combat is very much rooted in the same ideas, however Vesperia's version of the system is quite different from Berseria"s. It's hard for me to say if it's different enough for you, this is why demos would be helpful
I stopped playing every Tales Of I've tried, because of the grinding required... I've never seen any ending of a Tales Of game. While I've seen the ending of many many other JRPGs
I've heard really good things, but the only place I could play it on is PC, and the PC port is apparently terrible so alas it's not in the cards right now.
Can anyone tell me if this game can be played before it’s other titles? Like i know the very first game dated all the way back to 1995 so do they have to be played in order before playing this to be able to understand the story or characters?
No the stories are completely separate, I think there are a couple exceptions of sequels to previous games, but Vesperia is definitely not one of them.
Don't play this game after playing a game like Xenoblade Chronicles or any heavy lore, world ending plot kind of game. It ruined Vesperia for me. The only thing keeping me going is the main character and the individual character development because otherwise, there is nothing engaging about the plot. Town and overall exploration is also jarringly limited. I've played through Symphonia like ten times, an absolute favorite. This game is a completely different structure. Trying to love it, but its hard.
When a RPG sells over a million copies it's considered a success, but when a shooter like battleborn sells over a million copies it's considered a failure, why is that
Greater standard bearer numbers would be my assumption. As big as Final Fantasy is, it won't hit the numbers Call of Duty does and so it's somewhat by comparison. Budget considerations probably also factor in, but I don't know how much.
1. Return on Investment : If I put a lot of effort and money into making and selling something, it should give me more money Development cost + Marketing cost for JRPG like Vesperia is lower than something like Battleborn. So 1 million copies sold is likely to cover the cost of Vesperia. 2. Scope of game : Vesperia is aimed at core RPG and JRPG fans, that have experience with genres. These people are less in number compared to general gaming audience. So selling 1 million copies is _comparetely_ impressive.
Genuine question, I really want to step out of my comfort zone and play something different but I physically cannot force myself to play some so Gai like it looks so girly and it's just hard to get into
Worst game I've played this year so far :( Didn't like the fights, the dialogue, the fact that you have to play with a guide so you don't miss out on the side quests/dialogues/secret missions. This game is more work than fun :(
I don't get all the fuss about Vesperia. I played it after Berseria and Zestiria, and was bored for the most part. On the other hand, in Berseria and Zestiria time flew for me. I even started watching anime based on those games to get deeper into the world.
It does feel different to come to after Berseria (which is what I did as well). It’s slower and especially gameplay wise less active but I still found Vesperia enjoyable
This game makes me want to cry, I was tricked by this video and it being a fan favorite and spent 50 bucks. You absolutely cannot animation cancel or input more than one command at a time. You are at the mercy of lengthy and clunky combat animations that the developers clearly thought looked fancy. Not to mention you spend most of your time recovering from damage stun-locked by enemies in a 5v1, the healing is op and easily keeps you alive but it's frustrating not having control of your character because you're constantly stun-locked. Every animation must finish completely before you can even consider inputting another button command. The combat is painful and easily the worst I've seen in any game, especially when your enemies follow a very different and seemingly fluid combat combat system seamlessly merging their animations. I can't believe that wasn't mentioned in this video. The combat alone was enough for me to set the game down at 1 hour of gameplay which is really disappointing because I want to like the game.
This game has a mechanic called manual cancelling which isnt explained in the tutorial, it allows you to end your attack recovery animation early so you can do combos normally not possible. You have to set your controlled character in manual mode to be able to do manual cancel, not the default mode semi-auto which youre likely using. I suggest you look up TH-cam videos on it, cause your criticisms tells me youre lacking understanding of how the game works.
Vesperia is garbage. Watch some amazon reviews to broaden your perspective. 1:20 sales over a million only imply anticipation. The reviews are negative.
@@Ovalee I do. Reviewers are invaluable on amazon. You might be against amazon because of their toxic impact on local economies. But at least they are usually not paid mouthpieces as is the case for most switch reviewers on youTube. Plus you don't have to watch annoying ads for stuff you won't buy.
It's rated a 4.7 out of 5 on Amazon so no, the reviews aren't bad and neither is the game. It's a classic and one of, if not the best, tales of games they've made so far.
Funny you say that we should see amazon's review to broaden our perspective even though you just narrow down your perspective into other platform such as Steam etc.

Tales of vesperia is one of my all time favorite games
Bruh
Symphonia is a masterpiece
If the game can't run unfortunately I'll never be able to confirm that, and the PC port for Symphonia is awful.
@@CommRio go play on pc then. This game is not for you.
@@kosterix123 well he said that PC port for Symphonia is awful, didn't he?
@@christianalbertjahns2577 happy that my ToS and gamecube are still perfectly working.
Hi Hardy Joe will you marry me
Lots of talk of Tales of Symphonia, however no one mentioned the PS3 port of both Symphonia? Both in 1 package. Couldn't remember 1 or 2 discs cuz didn't play much & my PS3 optical drive broke.
Loves ToV so much ever since XB360. I bought the console solely wanted to try out the game, but fell in love with it while progressing the game. However it's still so difficult facing Gattuso on first play through. Threw controller on the couch so many times when playing DE on PS4
Guess it's time to get started on this. Though it is the Switch I got it on and I hope it doesn't become a big issue.
I mean I was able to play it through fine on Switch, so I suspect it will be no problem for you.
@@CommRio Okay, that sounds good.
@@AceWing905 Definitely very different action system to Ys (not to Tales benefit in my opinion), glad you still enjoyed the story and characters.
Knowing me I'll stumble into the side quests
First played arise lol now I'm on this one
Same and so far I’m loving it man the op is amazing I love it❤️
Could you tell how it compares v/s Berseria?
So obviously a lot of it is personal opinion. I think combat wise and character wise Berseria is stronger, although that’s partially because I think Berseria is extremely good in those areas. The story of Vesperia is lighter in general but isn’t afraid to tackle some darker topics especially with their main character Yuri. I really enjoyed the world building in Vesperia and the environment is quite nice. Simply put it’s a really solid Tales of game, that in my opinion doesn’t quite reach Berseria’s level but is a worthwhile game to pick up if you enjoy the series.
I would play this ten more times before i play thru Arise again! And ive put 800+ hours into this game
So how's this game for you?
@@Iychoenk one of my all time favorite games more depth to it than it seems and a decent amount of endgame content to keep you busy!
@@seangamache8159 is there so many content in this game
Like side mission or optional bosses?
@@Iychoenk there is quite a lot of both as well as a coliseum for each char with good rewards and the labyrinth of memories which has a very cool final boss and some hidden dungeons that will eat up many more hours after you play the main story
Great take on the review, but I have to disagree on the customization. Excluding certain sidequests and certain items, most of the character's best weapons and skills come from synthesis weapons
Yea then you will use time to power up Fell Arms.
I liked this game too much I brought it $10 digital and a physical copy later lol
Brought it for $11 seems decent for now
Cool Video Bro!
Footage shows even at 720 very low resolution, everything looks washed out. How is the handheld experience?
Some of the footage was lower quality than others, that was because of capturing problems not the game itself. Handheld was pretty good, I just had some troubles with combat on the Switch preventing me from doing moves as quickly or precisely as I would have liked.
@@CommRio preventing you how ?!
(i have a Lite so that's relevant to me)
@@kosterix123 because you can't (as far as I know) remap the controls there were certain moves that I found too difficult for me to do precisely when playing so I just didn't use some of them. Didn't affect the gameplay too much.
@@CommRio ow that is a pity.
Love this game!
Why did people want Troy baker to reprise his role
is the gameplay similar to tales of berseria or no?
because l liked the story of Berseria but got bored of the gameplay around the halfway point
It is a Tales game so the action combat is very much rooted in the same ideas, however Vesperia's version of the system is quite different from Berseria"s. It's hard for me to say if it's different enough for you, this is why demos would be helpful
I played the whole story line while it was still on Xbox 360
I stopped playing every Tales Of I've tried, because of the grinding required...
I've never seen any ending of a Tales Of game. While I've seen the ending of many many other JRPGs
I don't think any of the Tales games will ever be better than Symphonia.
This games on sale for 12$ rn wondering if I should get it
That's a really good price for the game, so I think if you're at all interested now is the time to get the game.
Tales of Symphonia is the best game of the series for me, can't believe you won't play it lol
I've heard really good things, but the only place I could play it on is PC, and the PC port is apparently terrible so alas it's not in the cards right now.
@The Precious Little White Angel not everyone have gamecube/ps2 and they are no longer in production
I tried to get into this game but I can't get past the outdated combat.
Back when the tales games were good 😢
Can anyone tell me if this game can be played before it’s other titles? Like i know the very first game dated all the way back to 1995 so do they have to be played in order before playing this to be able to understand the story or characters?
No the stories are completely separate, I think there are a couple exceptions of sequels to previous games, but Vesperia is definitely not one of them.
@@CommRio thank you for the fast response!
@@dan290786 you're welcome!
What about the vesperia story?
you said that it is released in the west on 2009 isn't it 2019?
The original game came out in 2009 in the West, the definitive edition came out in 2019.
1. Return on Investment : If I put a lot of effort and money into making and selling something, it should give me more money
Development cost + Marketing cost for JRPG like Vesperia is lower than something like Battleborn.
Genuine question, I really want to step out of my comfort zone and play something different but I physically cannot force myself to play some so Gai like it looks so girly and it's just hard to get into
Maybe Tales of Arise would suit you more or one of the RPG's of this style that look more realistic like Final Fantasy or Nier
@@CommRio thanks for the recommendation. Like I want to switch it up and try new things but man this was hard to watch
What does ost stand for?
Original Soundtrack or Official Soundtrack
I was remember playing that in psp
i dont even have to watch the video to say: TRU
Worst game I've played this year so far :( Didn't like the fights, the dialogue, the fact that you have to play with a guide so you don't miss out on the side quests/dialogues/secret missions. This game is more work than fun :(
Hmmm... I picked it up, not played it yet. It is the last chance I am willing to give Tales of series. Beseria was meh and Arise awful imo.
You really need to play Tales of symphonia
I wish the PC port was actually decent then I could.
@@CommRio I played it on GameCube 😂
@@CommRio All jokes aside; amazing game and killer storyline.
subbed
I don't get all the fuss about Vesperia. I played it after Berseria and Zestiria, and was bored for the most part. On the other hand, in Berseria and Zestiria time flew for me. I even started watching anime based on those games to get deeper into the world.
It does feel different to come to after Berseria (which is what I did as well). It’s slower and especially gameplay wise less active but I still found Vesperia enjoyable
Is knowing everything real world
it was at 3:55 I clicked stop download lol
@@mng8680 tried that and it did work for me.
Loved vesperia. Arise and vesperia are the two best
Lose the jokes and you'll get more subs. Great job though, keep up the good work.
Vesperia is garbage. Watch some amazon reviews to broaden your perspective.
1:20 sales over a million only imply anticipation. The reviews are negative.
who goes on amazon for gamer reviews lmao
@@Ovalee I do. Reviewers are invaluable on amazon. You might be against amazon because of their toxic impact on local economies.
But at least they are usually not paid mouthpieces as is the case for most switch reviewers on youTube. Plus you don't have to watch annoying ads for stuff you won't buy.
It's rated a 4.7 out of 5 on Amazon so no, the reviews aren't bad and neither is the game. It's a classic and one of, if not the best, tales of games they've made so far.
You seem fun
Funny you say that we should see amazon's review to broaden our perspective even though you just narrow down your perspective into other platform such as Steam etc.
