Let's just say, I have a hard time staying invested in RPGs but this game from the beginning had me hooked I spent hours in a weekend wanting to get through the story to see it all unfold, and let's just say it has me tearing up at certain parts and other emotions. That theme though really drives home those moments to.

Just finished Tales of Zestiria which IMO wasn't that bad and rather fun. Looking forward to starting Berseria and given all the comments as well as yours, I think it will be a very enjoyable game
One of the things that I absolutely love about video games especially JRPGs is about taking some mature and realistic topics like you said before: "Emotion vs Reason" or like Maquiavelo said "The end justifies the means" it makes me reflex about how can this apply to our reality, videogames are not art, this is because a videogame strictly is an interactive system through a control and that by itself cannot transmit anything, but a videogame has some artistic elements like the story, the graphics, character design and writing, the music, so applying this like Berseria it gives a great value to the game itself, this game is more than a JRPG for me and that's why I love it so much, you know you are doing excellent when you emphasize with the characters and making a bond with them, thing that it happened to me with every character *Postdata:* Velvet best girl and then Magilou :3 *2nd postdata:* This game needs an anime *3rd postada:* This game is underrated, it has some many good features that can't be ignored so easily
Thanks a lot for this great video. Maybe because I was late to gaming (2004), I didn't make any connection with Symphonia, Abyss, Graces F, or Vesperia. A friend encouraged me to watch a playthrough of Berseria, and I loved it so much that I watched the entire playthrough. A few years later I got the game at a discount and am playing it now. P.S. I like your voice as well.
Bought this game for 14$ on ps4 and man is it fun so far. Ive only put in a few hours and the battle mechanics are a little new to me but I have a feeling this will be one of the best games ill ever play
Berseria was a game that really got my JRPG energy flowing. Everyone moment from the anime intro of the game, the beautiful menu design, the many twists to the story and how it ends with a beautiful ending credits melody made me feel glad i've immersed myself into it's world. One minor flow in my opinion is that i wish there was a training mode where i can practice my moves with no restrictions. I bought the manga version of this game and also managed to get it signed by the voice actress of Velvet Cristina Vee!
I started this game a few days ago after having played Symphonia and I'm really enjoying it so far, so I wanted to find a review of the game to know if it was actually was going to be as good as it seemed it would. I watched the entire thing before realizing the view, like and sub count and my God, was it a surprise! The video is great, it has an amazing quality with a great estructure for the review, if I didn't check those numbers I would have sworn this was some big ass channel, so great work man, you just earned a sub.
Ignas Reinhardt thank you for the comment, it honestly made my day. I’m just glad the video continues to help people. Especially to finding Berseria because it’s such a good game.
Thanks for the video, it absolutely helped me decide to buy the game while it was on sale on humble bundle. I was between this one and the previous game (15th tales game) and I wasn’t impressed by the 15th but your video was very informative! I just wish it touched on if there’s a skill system, sales/buying system, and a bit more on the gear. The story was neat though!
I honestly agree. While I understand the sentiments people have with the Grade shop, I can say I genuinely enjoyed the game. It was my introduction into the franchise and still is my favorite after playing 3 games in the series (Berseria, Zestiria and Vesperia). I also agree with the sentiment about the music. While I enjoyed running around the areas during the story, I often found myself wanting to hear other songs from other games. Of the Tales games I played, the combat in this is my favorite too. I have a bad habit of playing only as the MC, so I can only compare Velvet, Yuri and Sorey's fighting style but I can say I genuinely love playing as Velvet. Once you chain her moves together properly and enter Therion, it's a blast to play. Second is laughing playing as Yuri with Combo Plus and Combo Plus 2 equipped and you just keep interrupting the enemy's attack. The voice acting for the game was great too. As stupid as it sounds, I was actually unnerved hearing Velvet when she went back to Aball, and I think that has something to do with how the characters themselves are too. To me, these characters feel "real" so when things affect the characters, they're more impactful to the player too ... My apologies for the essay, I just really love this game
Thanks, hope you enjoy the game. Yeah I've gotten better with the music in more recent videos, but hopefully the old ones are still watchable in spite of the loud music.
Great game! I loved the characters and the story was interesting and captivating. The battle system was enjoyable and the way the game balanced a more dark story with moments of humor was really good.
This is what I love about Skits and similar devices in JPRGs, you get much more content and depth with your characters I absolutely love Mass Effect but after a few cutscenes and conversations they become normal NPCs, Dragon Age is a bit better but you really have to follow along, it's easy to miss, and very easy to accidentally interrupt
I'm currently playing the game (kinda creepy if it shows up on youtube recommends when I just google searched it). Liking it so far but something you haven't mentioned is that nearly no character has a strong motivation to do what they do except velvet. The whole motivation for rokurou for example is his dept to velvet. That dept? "hey have you seen a sword?" - "yeah it was in that room back there" - "I'm forever in your debt". Eizen? Some vague thing about finding his captain which would lead him in a similar direction but not really enough motivation for him to follow us around constantly. Magilou's motivation is something like "eh nothing better to do" Those are all very weak. And the skits really overstayed their welcome. At times 4 of them were unlocked at the same time and all of them went on for too long. I usually don't skip cutscenes but in this game, I repeatedly did. And I'm very much not a fan of the battle system. On pc, you really can only use two of the slots comfortably (mapped to mouse 1 and 2), but even with 4, the game kinda expects you to rearrange the Artes based on enemy type for the weaknesses and nah, way too lazy for that. Kept using the same low-SP high stun combo for the whole game. Why use costly flashy hidden artes when stunning the enemy is pretty much the main goal? Also at least on PC the game does an awful job of teaching you, it doesn't even tell you which slots are for right and left mouse buttons, it expects you to use the arrow keys. (hint: once you'tr in combat, hit the quick menu button and then controls. There and exclusively there it does tell you what the mouse buttons map to) Visually I gotta say.. I liked it but I did a double take when you mentioned 2016. I dunno, I expected this game to be 10 years older because of the frequent object pop in, low resolution textures etc. For 2016 that really was not good graphics. But it's serviceable. Don't get me wrong being a bit of a negative nancy here, all in all I like it, but.. Let's just say it won't joust Ys 8 from my throne any time soon
I think a few of the characters motivations will become clearer as you play more. Velvet is obviously the central person, but the others get their moments more later on. As for other critiques there is a fair amount that I think are more than fair. The skits in particular is a common critique even for die hard Tales fans. Hope you keep going and even if it doesn't reach Ys 8 level that it is an overall positive experience.
i love berseria but for me tales of vesperia is more fun to play and replay the text the humour there still humour in beseria that why i love it...but it more dark vesperia is more like an adventure with friends
Bought this game for $9.99 through PSN 2 months ago, been playing for 30hrs now and I gotta say I'm enjoying it so far, considering this is my 2nd Tales game since PS1, only played Tales of Destiny then this.
To this day, I still think Berseria is one of the best jrpgs made in the last years. I have played dozens of dozens of jrpgs before playing this, but not many - if any - made me feel emotional like Berseria did. It succeded in what many other jrpgs failed to do: made me care for the characters, which is something that not many can do well or just don't do at all. Berseria however just works, I loved each and every character, I loved the antagonistS, I loved the story and the ending is just perfect, even if sad. Berseria will always remind me that you don't need epic plots or political themes, or any other complicated stuff to make a good story. All you need is good writing, a good cast, and a good pacing.
@@matthewgaming2291 im liking it. Reached the half way poi g and liking the character's, hit a couple "impossible" puzzles that I ended up solving with a tad bit more exploration. Worth the money spent.
I played tales of symphonia around when legend of zelda twilight princess came out on wii. Waiting for visions of mana. Might pick this game up while i wait.
I've heard good things about Tales of the Abyss, I do have a 2DS, so I've considered picking it up. Maybe one day when I have free time in my gaming schedule.
Tales of phantasia and tales of symphonia are my two favorite tales games by far. Strangely tales of legendia was weird and not as good as the rest of the series but the characters are sointeresting and unique and the world they built is so mysterious and alien like.
Same bro lol. Tales of the abyss on the 3ds was my first tales game. After that I played tales of hearts R on the vita, then tales of zestiria and this game on the PS4. Now I’m playing through vesperia definitive edition on the switch. This is my favorite rpgs series aside from Persona.
I just got the game yesterday and planning to start it the moment i finish DQXI. My only concern is the combat, some say its good, some others that it's bad or over complex. However, i have good expectations.
Well obviously it's subjective as to quality I can say I didn't find the combat overly complex, and Berseria was the very first Tales of game I played.
Hands down the best Tales game, hell one of the better RPGs. The story was amazing and the characters were great. And the ending, oh the ending was just crazy. P.s. Not my first tales. Played most of them going all the way back to Tales of Destiny and have played all but the newest one. This ones still the best in my eyes.
I played Tales of Arise last year and just beat Berseria, well, a few minutes ago. I loved it! The story and character development were excellent. I literally decided to turn the game to easy mode halfway through it just so I could enjoy the story without the hinderance of difficult combat encounters. It's been a while since I've felt that post-game melancholy, but I'm feeling it now. I'd say Tales of Arise has more refined gameplay, combat, exploration, etc. It's also more beautiful and has better sound, of course. However, the story and character writing is definitely better in Berseria. I had no idea that this game was a prequel to Zestiria. . . So, should I play that one now? Does that game give any kind of continuity to the world of Berseria, or is it pretty much its own thing, just taking place in the same world?
I have yet to play Zestiria myself so I definitely cannot say whether you should or shouldn't play it and the connection between Berseria and Zestiria. From what I've heard there is a decent amount of references, but Zestiria is set well in the future of Berseria so that limits the references
@@CommRio I actually just decided to start Zestiria. I can already tell that I have more insight into the world due to playing Berseria, but we'll see how it all goes
@@CommRio OK, I played Zestiria. There is actually quite a bit of connection between them, however, their stories are each complete, meaning that one isn't necessary for understanding the other. Playing Zestiria doesn't add any new information that makes Berseria more understandable, or vice versa. So, if you've played Berseria, there's no plot reason to then play Zestiria. I'll also say that, in terms of story and gameplay, I don't think Zestiria stacks up with Berseria or Arise.
The biggest thing for me Is how the characters are surprisingly non chalant about their situation Rokurou is a real bro despite his warrior lineage Velvet feels like a housewife when she's not fighting Eizen is the comically serious especially when you realize who his sister is
Great Video. So beeing a newcomer to the series I playd this after I finishd Symphonia, wich I really loved. Maybe its me beeing a relative novice to JRPGS but I gave up after 10 hours. The biggest offenders for me were the beyond boring exploration and surpringsly some of the characters. I found Magilu insufrabel in places and also Velvet was just such a self serious stick in the mud that i just wasnt that invested tbh. I can not speak beyond my 10 hours in the Game so maybe its gets really good once you push through. after I finish Zesteria and Arise finally drops ill give it another shot.
I can assure you at least on the character front that things do get better if you ever decide to give it another try. Hope you enjoy Zestiria and of course Arise once it arrives.
This guy starts the video, with True Will and then says "Burn is good but the rest is just okay" Like dude.... True Will is just as good. Don't be like that...
It is just my opinion however I will say that in the years since I made this video I reevaluated and came to the conclusion that Berseria's soundtrack is much better than I originally gave it credit for.
So I haven't played Zestiria, but I have heard more experienced Tales fans regard it as one of the weakest entries in the series, whereas Berseria is considered far superior. I'd say if you enjoyed the other games in the series you'll probably enjoy Berseria.
@@davidfossey6386 Don't know if you bought it already or not, mate. But it's just hit the PSN sales. Nine quid for a couple of weeks. Might finally pull the trigger on this one myself.
@@davidfossey6386 Yes, mate. I'm the bloody same. LOL. Must have 30+ waiting for me to play and/or finish, including some pretty big RPG's like FF XV, Dragon Quest XI, Megadimension Neptunia, Divinity and Pillars of Eternity. That's the main reason why I aint grabbed this yet. One day. ONE DAY. :D Hope you enjoy it, chief.
i took one huge issue with this game and that was Laphicet's english VA. in my opinion he RUINED a specific scene involving "Despair" involving a huge turning point in Velvet's character
Wish somebody woulda told me this was just Tales of Laphiset: Laphiset Edition. Liked the game and bought 4 other Tales games but good lord kid characters like him are annoying. Irked me so much when he tried to talk tough while dressed like an alter boy cupid.
First tales game I'm playing. Kinda disappointed. Overhyped and budget are words that come to mind. I like the characters but the story seems a bit simple for what I've played I also think this channel is a little too scared to criticize the game. Most of the video was saying basic mentions of world, story, and gameplay without digging into almost anything, then saying it's good. Story to a overview style extent was the only thing talked about with some detail. I summarise this video to basically saying "it's good, trust me."
It's not that good...I played this game and can't get past how clunky it feels. It's mind breakingly sluggish and clunky. They just upgraded the textures. Persona 5 came out the same year as this. It's just not a good game. It's a barebones JRPG with a famous name.
has to say other than the story, game looks really boring, id rather spend hours in genshing impact or other games that i have than finishing this, even tho i want to finish it, the game just doesnt give me what i seek

More games need to take lessons from Tales of Berseria in a couple areas, and I think music themes is one of the biggest.

Another awesome vid bro. I just subbed
gained a new sub, thank you for your work! I really enjoy your content :)
Glad you enjoy it, and thank you for the sub!
The biggest thing for me Is how the characters are surprisingly non chalant about their situation
Rokurou is a real bro despite his warrior lineage
Velvet feels like a housewife when she's not fighting
Eizen is the comically serious especially when you realize who his sister is
Haha you are right and you didn't even touch on Magilou and her constant lack of seriousness.
@@CommRio yup a complete troll
Who's Eizen's sister? I finished the game but never figured it out.
@@SoulUnion Edna from zestiria
@@KudaGeatsune3821 That makes alot of sense.
Started with radiant mytholgy1
Then xilia 1
Now berseria
Tell sjws, that there's no strong woman in videogames. This game rocks.
They’ll just complain about how she dresses
The video was well done and while I could still hear your voice, the music volume was way too high throughout.
The one thing I found kind of weird is when your talking to people in the villages that your crew isn’t standing next to you
One translation that did not work is Shigure "I don't even need to doge" when the original was "No need to dodge" being his aoe cannot be dodged.
I really couldn't get into the one that came out before this i think it was Zesteria. But I loved the others beforehand, Should I give this one a go??
So I haven't played Zestiria, but I have heard more experienced Tales fans regard it as one of the weakest entries in the series, whereas Berseria is considered far superior. I'd say if you enjoyed the other games in the series you'll probably enjoy Berseria.
@@CommRio cool thank you! I watched the video and I was still undecided. Its only 15 pounds here in the UK so I might as well just give it a go! :)
@@davidfossey6386 Don't know if you bought it already or not, mate. But it's just hit the PSN sales. Nine quid for a couple of weeks. Might finally pull the trigger on this one myself.
@@Romanplaystation Nah I hadn't actually, got such a back log of games its getting overwhelming! Okay ill go and pick it up now 😅😅 cheers!
One day. ONE DAY. :D
Hope you enjoy it, chief.
i took one huge issue with this game and that was Laphicet's english VA. in my opinion he RUINED a specific scene involving "Despair" involving a huge turning point in Velvet's character
Ayyyyy let’s go 600th sub💪💪💪
Much appreciated!
Wish somebody woulda told me this was just Tales of Laphiset: Laphiset Edition. Liked the game and bought 4 other Tales games but good lord kid characters like him are annoying. Irked me so much when he tried to talk tough while dressed like an alter boy cupid.
Great video, although the deafening BGM is terribly distracting and totally unnecessary. Please.
the game is nice, but combat mechanics are terrible
First tales game I'm playing. Kinda disappointed. Overhyped and budget are words that come to mind. I like the characters but the story seems a bit simple for what I've played
I also think this channel is a little too scared to criticize the game. Most of the video was saying basic mentions of world, story, and gameplay without digging into almost anything, then saying it's good.
Story to a overview style extent was the only thing talked about with some detail.
I summarise this video to basically saying "it's good, trust me."
Have a pretty hard time getting in to this one. Slow, boring, obtuse. I just want to experience a nice anime story.
how is it slow? the first hour is like totally wild lol
Hey, woke media and pandering leftists, THIS is how you write a strong female/minority character.
That's completely fair, definitely a very different style of gameplay to Genshin Impact (which is great so I feel you there).
