So one time I was doing an escalation protocol, and two warlocks showed up out of nowhere, they were in a fireteam. So normal protocol, until we get to about stage 4. Then I just start seeing well after well being put down. I had no idea, but they were both using Phoenix protocol. The best escalation I ever did, and we ended up doing about 5 together. I think they're still on my friends list
I think Starfire Protocol is a little underrated in this video. With the extra Fusion grenade perk it allows you be an even better support medic for your group, and with the Benevolent Dawn class perk you will pretty much always have a grenade or rift on standby for emergency healing. I'd rate them honestly as a 4 out 5
Its better for teamplay but Phoenix protocal means more orbs + more super = more super chaining. Which is better 4 your team and yourself. Starfire protocal is a good alternative but not as good as the Phoenix
People saying that warlocks dont need good pvp exotics because novawarp is op are the same people who use the cookie cutter loadout of dustrock, lunas, wardcliff, blade barrage and stompees and say hunters need a buff bc they dont have OHK abilities.

I think Starfire Protocol got kinda undervalued here. It synergizes so well with the Well of Radiance neutral play which allows you to be a pretty efficient combat medic if you want to. Verity's Brow. its not amazing, but should be atleast a solid 2.5 Its like Nezarecs sin but not limited to void elements. I'm fairly confident that its value shines the most when more Warlocks in a match wear that same helmet boosting each other. Other than that. What's up with Bungie giving Warlocks so many rift-based exotics?
It cannot be understated how good Starfire Protocol is in the Crucible. Not only can you be a combat medic but you can heal yourself behind cover to turn the tables in a gunfight where you're solo. This exotic allows you to do all of this way more often. It was my most used exotic when grinding for Luna's.
DerultimativeOzzy Starfire Protocol is a great self-sustaining Exotic (pair with Dynamo for a good Super generating Exotic too) that got greatly undervalued while something like Reloading Aspects were greatly overvalued. But if you're a Warlock main, you can tell what should get what scores and what shouldn't, so don't let a list be the end all to Exotics Edit: Verity's Brow + Riskrunner is like the most extreme add-clearing combo in the game, yet such a powerful Synergy is barely even mentioned in the video when it absolutely does matter

He knows a lot by virtue of how much he's played Destiny but he doesn't know everything about the ins and outs of specific, less popular exotics. This is a good general guide for people trying to decide what to use but there are certainly some understated kits here.
Kriss_941 And Verity's Brow can charge Arc Grenades just by using Riskrunner, and throwing them at your feet gives you an on-demand way to activate the best add-clearing gun in the game, regardless of what you're up against
I think you are absolutely undervaluing chromatic fire. It doesn't give your kinetics dragonfly, it gives it an enhanced dragonfly. It causes 2 explosions, not just 1. That means if you pair this with ace of spades you will get 3 explosions from one headshot kill. In pvp this makes ace an even more incredible gun to use. Great video though I do appreciate your work
This tier list reminded me why I prefer pve on my warlock... The best warlock exotics are best felt in pve. Hunters and Titans have those few horribly op pvp exotics that suck to be on the receiving end of and, with the exception of *maybe* contraverse hold, warlocks just don't have an op pvp exotic.
This. This is the truest statement ever. Warlocks have nothing besides Novawarp in pvp. A super that a warlock may get twice in a match. We don't get an exotic that makes our super spammable like titan's furiosa or Hunter's shards, or BREAKS neutral game like the One eyed mask or skullfort. If bungie nerfs novawarp without giving warlocks something else, why would ANYONE play warlock in pvp?
@hfzelman Blade barrage has insane tracking and projectile speed and with the exotic, and this is the important part, consistency due to refund. Legitimately, Blade barrage can destroy sentinel shields. Hunters also have Gwisin vest for nightstalker which no joke can make a super last an entire match with one use. Nova warp gets countered by blade barrage and sentinel shield. Straight up did 3 charged attacks against guarded sentinel shield three times. He did not die. He melee'd me once and I died. In competitive crucible, dawnblade is the least played warlock class in the higher tiers. If someone is playing it, they are doing it for the crucible questlines. Otherwise, Voidwalk and stormcaller are the most played. Saying transversive steps is better than every hunter exotic is flat out ignorant considering Stompeez are just as fast and give as much slide as transversive, they just have increased jumps where warlock can reload their held weapon. Boy howdy, I'm glad I have a melee that can almost kill people when I hit them in a First person shooter. Sure is useful when looking down my scope. The mini nova bomb is really the only thing that's a plus. PVP Warlocks got one exotic in forsaken worth getting, contraverse hold.
@hfzelman look, I get what you mean -- though I think saying all Hunter exotics are worse is false, I've seen some nasty builds with that dragon chest piece. They just require more setup. At the end of the day, all classes are broken in some way that makes them less fun to play against, with the prevalence/severity caring greatly among them. All this does is highlight Bungie's horrible job balancing the game for any mode that includes PvP. Broken powers in PvE? Who cares, it helps the team clear the activity. Maybe some slight feelings of inadequacy if one can't keep up. But PvP? It means someone in the receiving end is annoyed, pissed, and having less fun because they "lost" due to poor balance, not a difference in skill.

Forcer I have run them in most of my games, and it gives you so many more weapons that you can use that used to be never used purely because of reload speed.
As a new player I really appreciate how you did this with the in depth reasoning on why you rated things the way you did and also the detail on pvp versus pve is something I think more D2 content creators could learn from, this video taught me a lot and I just wanted to drop a quick thank you :)
Chromatic Fire with Ace of Spades caused 3 explosions on headshot kills when forsaken launched (This was patched later on). If I recall that made the explosions fatal in PVP. It's been fixed but having multiple distinct explosions on kill is still cool.
James Toomer pretty sure the ace thing still causes 3 explosions. Also, each chromatic explosion does over 100 damage in pvp, that’s over 200 damage since there’s 2 explosions, so they are definitely still fatal.
Nothing manacles are literally game breaking good. Tracking cluster nova bombs back in d1 man. I miss that so much. Soooo much salt. Plus unlimited grenades
@@DarthGRE hahaha, I main a Titan. Either skullfort plus hands on and 5 super mods, or hammers, hallowfire heart and 5 super mods. I do have my lock running Sin and 5 super mods too though.
I mean you can tell a non warlock main is reviewing exotics haha. 1. Sunbracers need to be higher considering using top tree get airborne kills give melee and grenade energy (you always have melee back) 2. Use geomag in gambit for boss with primeval stack x2 and come back 3. Contra hold you literally didn't die from shoulder and can tank shotgun shots. 4. Wings of scared dawn with a bow you can stay airborne indefinitely and constantly get ability energy back with top tree. Overall good review but maybe try doing more research by asking warlock mains, no hate.
@hfzelman 1. Well is not better than geomag chaos reach in gambit, all i do is gambit, I would know b/c I've,used both for an extended period of time. 2. I dont think your a warlovk main b/c you said well was better than geomag in gambit when every warlock now uses geomag in gambit 3. I dont think youve played gambit simce launch of forsaken because well kept losing play as more warlocks realized that geomags melt the primeval especially with anything like tether or melting point

Starfire Protocol is actually very good for the super rift tree in Solar. The downside of this exotic is that fusion grenades are the worst of the solar grenades, but when that warlock tree uses their grenades for shields, it becomes irrelevant. You have two charges of grenades for throwing shields to yourself or allies, plus empowering rift becomes more beneficial when you don't have to rely on rifts to stay alive (because of the shields). So you can put out extra damage with empowering rifts, heal allies, and play a nice support role for higher end stuff or communication focused PvP. I think super rift tree is the reason why Sunbracers dont give 2 charges of solar grenades like they did in D1, because otherwise it would be crazy for support warlocks to have 2 grenade charges that could either heal or do insane DPS/zoning with the extra grenade length.
If vespir of raduis ever gets a fix, I hope its having the ability to do make your rift do damage over time to enemies who step into it. Not too op but very reliable damage , it's better than being a dust collector
I'm glad you see how good Sunbracers are. Honestly I can't play Dawnblade without them, the absolute power they have is hard to pass up. It's also a very fun play style. I love my space magic mini suns
I do think Verity's Brow is underrated. It all comes down to - do you want more grenades? For me, I prefer it over Nezarec's Sin since 1) it doesn't require an element and 2) there are a ton of elemental primaries in the game you can pair this with to maintain it's up time. For me, I'm a let's be real kind of guy - what ability do I use the most in PVE? Grenades. Not melee and not even rifts, I save those, I don't spam them. It's effect is quite strong in terms of just giving you more grenades, and those around you. Only major negative is you look ugly. Get one with Ashes to Assets and maybe that's up someone's alley.
I love my Verity's Brow, it looks... odd, I would say... but man who cares, its Exotic perk is legit good, I use it with the Arsenic Bow on PvE, and boy does that literally keep the grenade up almost all the time! Legit good armor piece.
Transversive Steps are my go-to. Since Warlocks don't have any quick reload abilities, it's the one exotic that takes care of that problem. Instant reload of shotguns and machine guns is especially helpful. Of course in D2, the Hunter has been my main in large part because of the usefulness of the dodge. Too bad Don't Touch Me never came forward.
IMO vesper of radius could use an additional perk of deploying rifts faster and maybe, JUST MAYBE, restores a chunk of health to only the warlock immediately after casting it.
I've been using stafire protocol for a while and it's really good for assisting your teammates! Because I use this in gambit, I have empowering rift, fusion grenades, and using this for well of radiance. You can hold down the grenade to heal and give allies plus yourself an over shield TWICE its really helpful
The only forsaken exotic for warlock that I have is Geomag... but I don’t have Chaos Reach still RIP. I ALWAYS use Karnstein Armlets. Never unequip ‘em. Low on health? Melee kill, full HP. But that’s just me.
There are multiple ways to unlock subclass. Did you do the blind well tier II or III. Also obtaining offering to oracle on the 3rd week, you can get it from Mara. Or beat first raid encounter
I’m in the same boat, launch of forsaken, picked well first, then got the stabilizers and only 2 weeks ago did I get my second seed, and went nova warp
The fun thing about sunbracers, with the perk that gives you mele energy on grenade damadge... you can chain it indefinity as long as there are adds. meanign you can throw all 5 grenades onto a boss and adds, kill a add, and then do it again, it CAN potentially get out of hand
Black Armory and random rolls have made a lot of these exotics interesting. For example, the new Black Armory sword, the Strykers Sure-Hand, can roll with Surrounded. Combine that with a Surrounded mod, a Devour Warlock, Skull of Dire Ahamkara with a Heavy Lifting roll, armor with Sword Scavenger and Super mods and you've got a very potent PvE build!
Hello from the future! I still love Sunbracers. They're the only Dawnblade exotic I keep in my inventory no matter what. When I'm not running them I go Lunafaction Boots because I rarely change away from middle Dawnblade tree. Edit: For PvP, I swap to Devour Voidwalker with Nezarack's Sin.
@Shadow Or... follow me on this one... I've had pretty bad luck. I've been playing almost daily since the launch of Forsaken at an average of about 4-6 hours per day. I've got 110 days on the game in total (although that's not just Forsaken, but I hope it puts it into perspective). I've gotten all Titan exotics and a couple Hunter exotics, just no Warlock exotics. All that being said, I'm okay with the RNG nature of the game, it makes exotics meaningful. I literally gasped when I got my last new exotic, which is something that hasn't been common in Destiny since the days of Gjallarhorn.
Nice revieuw. Interesting to see someone elses take on some of these :) I personally like the starfire protocol alot. But I date back from the Halo days where sticky grenades were a very powerfull tool in your arnament. With grenade mods you can spam grenades almost non stop. I really like it :) in PVE its downright insane though. Every engagement you can toss grenades around like candy. Not saying that it beats the other exotics or anything but just that it can be quite potent.
If you ask me Apotheosis Veil is actually pretty good with roaming supers in PvP, you can rush the enemy to close distance, activate super to restore any health you may lose while simultaneously saving super energy by being closer to your opponent and being able to kill them sooner. It doesn't help in terms of surviving while the super is active, but it does help with that very important start-up and prevents potential shutdowns.
Just a quick fyi for any attunement of grace warlocks, sunbracers can be used to throw out multiple healing grenades instead of damaging ones. You can usually get out four heals, and they easily recharge your melee, so you can keep a constant flow of healing at all times.
I actually like the Chromatic Fire when I run Revoker, I've gotten quite a few collateral triples and a few quads with it, it's not -all- the time, and usually only works once or twice in a particular match, but it's -great- when people like to run around holding hands.

I want those shatter kills in pvp damnit. im still mad they nerfed it in d1 pvp because it was "too strong" (ptsd from 1 shot magnetic / fusion grenades that miss you and track back sticking to your foot 1 shotting you)
Phoenix Protocol is outstanding in Gambit for the Primeval, especially if combined with Thunderlord and one or more Warlock with Chaos Reach and Geomag Stabilizers. I drop it after the envoys are down. I've also found that if I use it when a bunch of adds spawn at the various spawn points, I can usually get it back after everything's down, and if others in the team join in in the well, we wipe out pretty much everything pretty quickly. It really shines in the Blind Well - I basically can keep one running at all times for each round, and sometimes can have two going at the same time. I need to do some testing, but it seems that any kill from the well (yours or anyone elses') help refill your super. I've actually had 3 running at one time (third one starts just before the first ends).
I have been working with a Winter's Guile, Devour type of setup. I call it the Vampiric Saitama build. So long as you're in a Fireteam and there are no Blueberries, you can be anywhere in the danger zones in Blind Well indefinitely so long as you're killing things. Where the Saitama part comes into play is when you're getting all your health back per melee kill and the next punch is stronger.
Contraverse hold was a massive change in playstyle for me because I was always using handheld supernova to kill shotgun rushers before they got too close. Once i realized that i should wait till the shotgun was fired to release, thats when Contraverse Hold began to shine. Ordnance Mods on them boost grenade recharge too. Ive been told that if there are enough people in targeting range of a Blade Barrage, the armor given by holding the grenade can allow you to survive.

disagree hard on the ophidians rating. You dont use them in PVE at all. Like it gets 4/5 when phoenixfire protocol gets also 4. IN NO UNIVERSE Ophians are equally good as Phoenixfire in PVE. This doesnt add up. Good video nonetheless

In something like PvP though if sonehow people dont have or dont like transversive steps the ophidians are a good use of the exotic slot, but they're garbage in PvE
I'd like to poke at Contraverse Hold for PvP - it *does* allow you to throw far more HHSNs or overcharged Grenades (if you're using this with AoChaos over Ahamkhara's Skull) than without. And with Dark Matter on AoFission, you can alternate melee and grenades for ez add clear.
vesper is actually pretty dope in casual matchmaking group activities like gambit, strikes or haunted forest. the rift regen speed is insane if there are ~10 thrall around you and has consistently given me the most frequent clutch moments in saving an encounter that would otherwise have been a wipe. would not use in the new raid but also has some limited use in levi etc.
In this shotgun 1hit meta, that low cd blink+handheld+dmg reduction is godlike. Lots of people roaming close quarters overly confidently, not ready for that warlock who can tank your shotgun and 1hit you back. Even when in trouble, he can blink away and put down a healing rift. Or blink over you, charge a nova and 1hit.
When you do the hunter list, please try pairing the young ahamkaras spine with way of a thousand cuts. For someone who likes playing the abilities game, that is by far one of the most fun builds to use in my opinion. Coupled with ashes to assets, gamblers dodge, bomber, and innervation, you can run through most heroic strikes without ever really having to fire a gun. I don't think it's the best exotic for the subclass, but it does have the most active gameplay. This is all my opinion, but I haven't seen too many hunters rocking it, and for people that dont have the forsaken exotics, it's a solid build.
I like this video and what information it clarifies for me. I knew most of what you said, and then some, but I also play more than most people. Something you could and should mention are how you can build around certain exotics. For nezerac's sin, You can set it up so if you use all void weapons, you have a constant stream of use on it. You can use Inaugural Address as a rather nice pvp pulse rifle, or Fighting Lion for some interesting crowd control synergy. You didn't mention Gambit, or any synergies that can happen in the pvp/pve mix. If you build around Geomag Stabilizers, using the new Thunder Lord machine gun, and specific late game perks, you can have your kamehameha ready a good 3+ times in a single round. Good video, but you left out some important information that shows how strong certain exotics can be.
I love using Sunbracers with the new solar subclass. Great for damage, but you can also throw multiple charged healing/over shield grenades for team support. I usually lead with damage grenades, then charge the last one for healing. Combined with the ability recovery synergy of the subclass, it's amazing.
Have you seen Ace of Spades with Chromatic? Triple explosions that do really decent damage in PVP. And the damage you can tank with Contraverse in pvp seems really useful
Listen you console plebs, try to get some boots with traction on them, they are the best thing added to this game especially for console players cause you know that turn radius is trash on console.
Honest to god stompees and transversives with traction are game changing in pvp because traction impacts how fast you turn mid slide. You can now backslide and slide strafe with 10 sensitivity on console and its amazing.

3:00 phoenix protocol, it's actually really really useful playing the reckoning tier 3 in the bridge section... You need to be chaining supers for each section for your team to work
Starfire Protocol is super underrated when it comes to using Well of Radius in high difficulty activities. With Benevolent Dawn constantly up, you will always have healing grenades and empowering rifts in every encounter. I strongly recommend it for 100K nightfalls and Raids if you are under leveled.
I play the "contraverse hold" as my main PvE (non raid) exo and it's crazy good with the "chaos accelerant" grenade and it compensate largely for the bad ultimate. And as a bonus if you combine that with a "ash to asset" (enhanced is god tier here) and you litterally spam grenade and ultimate (witch largely compensate for the trash tier ultimate). "Phoenix protocole" is very good for solo "well of the blind" and god tier for gambit if you are in a full team with the apropriate strat. But in general for raid activities it's clear that the only real choice for warlock is the famous "lunafaction boots" if no other warlock have it.
I think both Phoenix Protocol and Chromatic Fire were a bit undervalued in PVP and undervalued in PVE respectively. In team based modes such as higher bracket Competitive, having Phoenix Protocol on a Radiancelock can be a godsend. So long as the enemy's pushing you, or you're based in critical territory, you'll have a fantastic uptime on a support super which gives everyone on your team god status while they're based inside. And Chromatic Fire also, because it works the same way Dragonfly does, but can also stack with Dragonfly. Meaning ad clear becomes a breeze and a single precision kill can provide excellent mileage.
Isz Novem I’m a stick with cool guy on tier lists for now he actually finds uses that most people look pass. I guess DPS is good but if we are forced to team play in high situations I find warlocks to be the better than titan or hunter. Support from warlocks is deadly if used properly. That walking empowerment from the well of radiance linked with claws of ahamkara is deadly when used properly. Two empowerment moving rifts with EP shotty 10 seconds wtf I don’t see how that wasn’t even thought of. I used the claws with thunder lord empowerment and shredded those nightfall strikes. I don’t know I think he needs to play with warlocks a lot more and reevaluate his tier list. The Phoenix protocol is 30 seconds of empowerment the DPS in that is crazy I don’t see how he ranked it as “eh” but I guess that’s just my small opinion with only two exotics I named.
Khari Webster might not need to spam em but it’s fun as hell if whoever getting the buff actually use it and don’t run out as soon as there health regen. A see a lot of people get the regen and leave but don’t take advantage of the empowerment buff.
If you pair chromatic fire with attunement of fission (dark matter ability) then you constantly get you dark matter buff, which is very useful for both pvp and pve
Warlock only has nova warp meanwhile titan has sentenal both hammers n arc smash. And they all have the shoulder charge ability now. dawnblade top tree is a waste storm caller is nerfed and nova bomb is a joke compared to bladebarrage
Ragnar Lothbrok _ that's what we do. It's just annoying seeing people complain about it all the time when hunter blade barrage has a higher usage stat. It if was truly the best everyone would use it.
The winter's guile also becomes less effective in group play. The time you have to get to the next enemy isn't very long and if your team mates kill things before you can get to them, you can't keep your stacks going, and you can't heal from devour without the kills
Sun bracers senergize really well with top tree dawn blade and either fighting lion or a shot gun of some kind. Its extremely powerful in gambit as well for a full add slayer set up easily getting 80+ kills each game
The explosions from chromatic fire can kill in crucible so def valuable. Also try contraverse hold with charged vortex nades, the multi hits can proc the grenade regen and you can get full grenade back almost 100% of the time.
For the chromatic fire. In terms of pvp it depends on the situation for it to be good. When enemies group up and team shoot and you happen to kill one with a headshot and then everyone get burned in the explosion could make a huge difference
The Sunbracers are an even better option now, with the top-tree solar and the wacky ranged attack on melee. No need to spec much of anything into discipline, just be airborne when you kill a few reds and your melee is charged, take out one with the "melee" and it's solar grenade rain time. I need to give the Skull some time with void though, that nova bomb recharge looks juicy. But then, Nezerac's with some extra grenade mods and a demolitionist void weapon is also nutty. Great choices for warlocks out there.
PvP wise, stag and starfire protocol. Stag gives a lot of rifts which pairs especially well with damage rift shenanigans (bodyshotting arbalest hello?), phoenix protocol goes well with mid tree solar lock, 2 overshield nade charges is good. Ophidian aspect could be good if you can get one with the right reloader perk, ophidian+enhanced hc loader and you can pick something other than outlaw on your HC while still having very quick reloads, now you'll just have em always, not just after a precision kill. The global weapon handling buff is also nice for comboing weapons.
i know this was posted a while back, but i urge you to give sanguine alchemy another shot. empowering rift with either devour or heal nade in terms of abilities. weapons would be an aggressive sniper and whatever else you want (i personally choose high fire rate autos with good stability, but i'm also bad at the game, so yeah). what this lets you do: set up a rift right around the corner of a common LDA (linear danger area in military speak) and peak it like you would with a normal sniper build, BUT it comes with the added benefit of wall hax, body shot 1hko's, radar while scoped, and with the new stat mechanics you can have 100 in recovery (which i've heard is the meta choice right now) and get rift every 40- seconds (especially if you have the void class item mod that reduced class ability cd after using it). i SUCK at using snipers. everyone ever has always been able to constantly head shot me with snipers, but i've always found myself shooting the sky whenever i use them. but after finding out about this build, i finally started making progress on those stupid sniper quests and such.

So one time I was doing an escalation protocol, and two warlocks showed up out of nowhere, they were in a fireteam. So normal protocol, until we get to about stage 4. Then I just start seeing well after well being put down. I had no idea, but they were both using Phoenix protocol. The best escalation I ever did, and we ended up doing about 5 together. I think they're still on my friends list

I think Starfire Protocol is a little underrated in this video. With the extra Fusion grenade perk it allows you be an even better support medic for your group, and with the Benevolent Dawn class perk you will pretty much always have a grenade or rift on standby for emergency healing. I'd rate them honestly as a 4 out 5
Its better for teamplay but Phoenix protocal means more orbs + more super = more super chaining. Which is better 4 your team and yourself. Starfire protocal is a good alternative but not as good as the Phoenix

I think Starfire Protocol got kinda undervalued here. It synergizes so well with the Well of Radiance neutral play which allows you to be a pretty efficient combat medic if you want to.
Verity's Brow. its not amazing, but should be atleast a solid 2.5 Its like Nezarecs sin but not limited to void elements. I'm fairly confident that its value shines the most when more Warlocks in a match wear that same helmet boosting each other.

It cannot be understated how good Starfire Protocol is in the Crucible. Not only can you be a combat medic but you can heal yourself behind cover to turn the tables in a gunfight where you're solo. This exotic allows you to do all of this way more often. It was my most used exotic when grinding for Luna's.
DerultimativeOzzy Starfire Protocol is a great self-sustaining Exotic (pair with Dynamo for a good Super generating Exotic too) that got greatly undervalued while something like Reloading Aspects were greatly overvalued. But if you're a Warlock main, you can tell what should get what scores and what shouldn't, so don't let a list be the end all to Exotics
Edit: Verity's Brow + Riskrunner is like the most extreme add-clearing combo in the game, yet such a powerful Synergy is barely even mentioned in the video when it absolutely does matter

I think you are absolutely undervaluing chromatic fire. It doesn't give your kinetics dragonfly, it gives it an enhanced dragonfly. It causes 2 explosions, not just 1. That means if you pair this with ace of spades you will get 3 explosions from one headshot kill. In pvp this makes ace an even more incredible gun to use.

This tier list reminded me why I prefer pve on my warlock... The best warlock exotics are best felt in pve. Hunters and Titans have those few horribly op pvp exotics that suck to be on the receiving end of and, with the exception of *maybe* contraverse hold, warlocks just don't have an op pvp exotic.
This. This is the truest statement ever. Warlocks have nothing besides Novawarp in pvp. A super that a warlock may get twice in a match. We don't get an exotic that makes our super spammable like titan's furiosa or Hunter's shards, or BREAKS neutral game like the One eyed mask or skullfort. If bungie nerfs novawarp without giving warlocks something else, why would ANYONE play warlock in pvp?
@hfzelman Blade barrage has insane tracking and projectile speed and with the exotic, and this is the important part, consistency due to refund. Legitimately, Blade barrage can destroy sentinel shields. Hunters also have Gwisin vest for nightstalker which no joke can make a super last an entire match with one use. Nova warp gets countered by blade barrage and sentinel shield. Straight up did 3 charged attacks against guarded sentinel shield three times. He did not die. He melee'd me once and I died. In competitive crucible, dawnblade is the least played warlock class in the higher tiers. If someone is playing it, they are doing it for the crucible questlines. Otherwise, Voidwalk and stormcaller are the most played. Saying transversive steps is better than every hunter exotic is flat out ignorant considering Stompeez are just as fast and give as much slide as transversive, they just have increased jumps where warlock can reload their held weapon. Boy howdy, I'm glad I have a melee that can almost kill people when I hit them in a First person shooter. Sure is useful when looking down my scope. The mini nova bomb is really the only thing that's a plus. PVP Warlocks got one exotic in forsaken worth getting, contraverse hold.
@hfzelman look, I get what you mean -- though I think saying all Hunter exotics are worse is false, I've seen some nasty builds with that dragon chest piece. They just require more setup.
At the end of the day, all classes are broken in some way that makes them less fun to play against, with the prevalence/severity caring greatly among them. All this does is highlight Bungie's horrible job balancing the game for any mode that includes PvP.
Broken powers in PvE? Who cares, it helps the team clear the activity. Maybe some slight feelings of inadequacy if one can't keep up. But PvP? It means someone in the receiving end is annoyed, pissed, and having less fun because they "lost" due to poor balance, not a difference in skill.

Chromatic Fire with Ace of Spades caused 3 explosions on headshot kills when forsaken launched (This was patched later on). If I recall that made the explosions fatal in PVP.
It's been fixed but having multiple distinct explosions on kill is still cool.

James Toomer pretty sure the ace thing still causes 3 explosions. Also, each chromatic explosion does over 100 damage in pvp, that’s over 200 damage since there’s 2 explosions, so they are definitely still fatal.

1. Sunbracers need to be higher considering using top tree get airborne kills give melee and grenade energy (you always have melee back)
2. Use geomag in gambit for boss with primeval stack x2 and come back
3. Contra hold you literally didn't die from shoulder and can tank shotgun shots.
4. Wings of scared dawn with a bow you can stay airborne indefinitely and constantly get ability energy back with top tree.
Overall good review but maybe try doing more research by asking warlock mains, no hate.

Starfire Protocol is actually very good for the super rift tree in Solar. The downside of this exotic is that fusion grenades are the worst of the solar grenades, but when that warlock tree uses their grenades for shields, it becomes irrelevant. You have two charges of grenades for throwing shields to yourself or allies, plus empowering rift becomes more beneficial when you don't have to rely on rifts to stay alive (because of the shields). So you can put out extra damage with empowering rifts, heal allies, and play a nice support role for higher end stuff or communication focused PvP.
I think super rift tree is the reason why Sunbracers dont give 2 charges of solar grenades like they did in D1, because otherwise it would be crazy for support warlocks to have 2 grenade charges that could either heal or do insane DPS/zoning with the extra grenade length.
If vespir of raduis ever gets a fix, I hope its having the ability to do make your rift do damage over time to enemies who step into it. Not too op but very reliable damage , it's better than being a dust collector

I'm glad you see how good Sunbracers are. Honestly I can't play Dawnblade without them, the absolute power they have is hard to pass up. It's also a very fun play style. I love my space magic mini suns
I do think Verity's Brow is underrated. It all comes down to - do you want more grenades? For me, I prefer it over Nezarec's Sin since 1) it doesn't require an element and 2) there are a ton of elemental primaries in the game you can pair this with to maintain it's up time. For me, I'm a let's be real kind of guy - what ability do I use the most in PVE? Grenades. Not melee and not even rifts, I save those, I don't spam them. It's effect is quite strong in terms of just giving you more grenades, and those around you. Only major negative is you look ugly. Get one with Ashes to Assets and maybe that's up someone's alley.
I love my Verity's Brow, it looks... odd, I would say... but man who cares, its Exotic perk is legit good, I use it with the Arsenic Bow on PvE, and boy does that literally keep the grenade up almost all the time! Legit good armor piece.
Transversive Steps are my go-to. Since Warlocks don't have any quick reload abilities, it's the one exotic that takes care of that problem. Instant reload of shotguns and machine guns is especially helpful.
Of course in D2, the Hunter has been my main in large part because of the usefulness of the dodge. Too bad Don't Touch Me never came forward.

I've been using stafire protocol for a while and it's really good for assisting your teammates! Because I use this in gambit, I have empowering rift, fusion grenades, and using this for well of radiance. You can hold down the grenade to heal and give allies plus yourself an over shield TWICE its really helpful
The only forsaken exotic for warlock that I have is Geomag... but I don’t have Chaos Reach still RIP.
I ALWAYS use Karnstein Armlets. Never unequip ‘em. Low on health? Melee kill, full HP. But that’s just me.
There are multiple ways to unlock subclass. Did you do the blind well tier II or III. Also obtaining offering to oracle on the 3rd week, you can get it from Mara. Or beat first raid encounter

The fun thing about sunbracers, with the perk that gives you mele energy on grenade damadge... you can chain it indefinity as long as there are adds. meanign you can throw all 5 grenades onto a boss and adds, kill a add, and then do it again, it CAN potentially get out of hand

Black Armory and random rolls have made a lot of these exotics interesting. For example, the new Black Armory sword, the Strykers Sure-Hand, can roll with Surrounded. Combine that with a Surrounded mod, a Devour Warlock, Skull of Dire Ahamkara with a Heavy Lifting roll, armor with Sword Scavenger and Super mods and you've got a very potent PvE build!

@Shadow Or... follow me on this one... I've had pretty bad luck. I've been playing almost daily since the launch of Forsaken at an average of about 4-6 hours per day. I've got 110 days on the game in total (although that's not just Forsaken, but I hope it puts it into perspective). I've gotten all Titan exotics and a couple Hunter exotics, just no Warlock exotics. All that being said, I'm okay with the RNG nature of the game, it makes exotics meaningful. I literally gasped when I got my last new exotic, which is something that hasn't been common in Destiny since the days of Gjallarhorn.

I personally like the starfire protocol alot. But I date back from the Halo days where sticky grenades were a very powerfull tool in your arnament. With grenade mods you can spam grenades almost non stop. I really like it :) in PVE its downright insane though. Every engagement you can toss grenades around like candy.
Not saying that it beats the other exotics or anything but just that it can be quite potent.

If you ask me Apotheosis Veil is actually pretty good with roaming supers in PvP, you can rush the enemy to close distance, activate super to restore any health you may lose while simultaneously saving super energy by being closer to your opponent and being able to kill them sooner. It doesn't help in terms of surviving while the super is active, but it does help with that very important start-up and prevents potential shutdowns.

Just a quick fyi for any attunement of grace warlocks, sunbracers can be used to throw out multiple healing grenades instead of damaging ones. You can usually get out four heals, and they easily recharge your melee, so you can keep a constant flow of healing at all times.

Phoenix Protocol is outstanding in Gambit for the Primeval, especially if combined with Thunderlord and one or more Warlock with Chaos Reach and Geomag Stabilizers. I drop it after the envoys are down.
I've also found that if I use it when a bunch of adds spawn at the various spawn points, I can usually get it back after everything's down, and if others in the team join in in the well, we wipe out pretty much everything pretty quickly.
It really shines in the Blind Well - I basically can keep one running at all times for each round, and sometimes can have two going at the same time. I need to do some testing, but it seems that any kill from the well (yours or anyone elses') help refill your super. I've actually had 3 running at one time (third one starts just before the first ends).

I have been working with a Winter's Guile, Devour type of setup.
I call it the Vampiric Saitama build.
So long as you're in a Fireteam and there are no Blueberries, you can be anywhere in the danger zones in Blind Well indefinitely so long as you're killing things.
Where the Saitama part comes into play is when you're getting all your health back per melee kill and the next punch is stronger.
Crown of Tempest still works just as good as with Chaos Reach. It’s all I use in PvE

Contraverse hold was a massive change in playstyle for me because I was always using handheld supernova to kill shotgun rushers before they got too close. Once i realized that i should wait till the shotgun was fired to release, thats when Contraverse Hold began to shine. Ordnance Mods on them boost grenade recharge too. Ive been told that if there are enough people in targeting range of a Blade Barrage, the armor given by holding the grenade can allow you to survive.

I'd like to poke at Contraverse Hold for PvP - it *does* allow you to throw far more HHSNs or overcharged Grenades (if you're using this with AoChaos over Ahamkhara's Skull) than without. And with Dark Matter on AoFission, you can alternate melee and grenades for ez add clear.

vesper is actually pretty dope in casual matchmaking group activities like gambit, strikes or haunted forest. the rift regen speed is insane if there are ~10 thrall around you and has consistently given me the most frequent clutch moments in saving an encounter that would otherwise have been a wipe. would not use in the new raid but also has some limited use in levi etc.

In this shotgun 1hit meta, that low cd blink+handheld+dmg reduction is godlike. Lots of people roaming close quarters overly confidently, not ready for that warlock who can tank your shotgun and 1hit you back. Even when in trouble, he can blink away and put down a healing rift. Or blink over you, charge a nova and 1hit.

When you do the hunter list, please try pairing the young ahamkaras spine with way of a thousand cuts. For someone who likes playing the abilities game, that is by far one of the most fun builds to use in my opinion. Coupled with ashes to assets, gamblers dodge, bomber, and innervation, you can run through most heroic strikes without ever really having to fire a gun. I don't think it's the best exotic for the subclass, but it does have the most active gameplay. This is all my opinion, but I haven't seen too many hunters rocking it, and for people that dont have the forsaken exotics, it's a solid build.

I like this video and what information it clarifies for me. I knew most of what you said, and then some, but I also play more than most people. Something you could and should mention are how you can build around certain exotics. For nezerac's sin, You can set it up so if you use all void weapons, you have a constant stream of use on it. You can use Inaugural Address as a rather nice pvp pulse rifle, or Fighting Lion for some interesting crowd control synergy.
You didn't mention Gambit, or any synergies that can happen in the pvp/pve mix. If you build around Geomag Stabilizers, using the new Thunder Lord machine gun, and specific late game perks, you can have your kamehameha ready a good 3+ times in a single round.

I love using Sunbracers with the new solar subclass. Great for damage, but you can also throw multiple charged healing/over shield grenades for team support. I usually lead with damage grenades, then charge the last one for healing. Combined with the ability recovery synergy of the subclass, it's amazing.

Have you seen Ace of Spades with Chromatic? Triple explosions that do really decent damage in PVP.
And the damage you can tank with Contraverse in pvp seems really useful
I can't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure you can 2tap most guardians with Ace while memento mori is active.
Listen you console plebs, try to get some boots with traction on them, they are the best thing added to this game especially for console players cause you know that turn radius is trash on console.

Honest to god stompees and transversives with traction are game changing in pvp because traction impacts how fast you turn mid slide. You can now backslide and slide strafe with 10 sensitivity on console and its amazing.

Totally. Feels a little weird sprinting right away but you also get a plus one mobility with traction so kind of like a plus one mobility without a mod with the traction perc

Starfire Protocol is super underrated when it comes to using Well of Radius in high difficulty activities. With Benevolent Dawn constantly up, you will always have healing grenades and empowering rifts in every encounter. I strongly recommend it for 100K nightfalls and Raids if you are under leveled.

I play the "contraverse hold" as my main PvE (non raid) exo and it's crazy good with the "chaos accelerant" grenade and it compensate largely for the bad ultimate. And as a bonus if you combine that with a "ash to asset" (enhanced is god tier here) and you litterally spam grenade and ultimate (witch largely compensate for the trash tier ultimate).
"Phoenix protocole" is very good for solo "well of the blind" and god tier for gambit if you are in a full team with the apropriate strat.
But in general for raid activities it's clear that the only real choice for warlock is the famous "lunafaction boots" if no other warlock have it.

I think both Phoenix Protocol and Chromatic Fire were a bit undervalued in PVP and undervalued in PVE respectively. In team based modes such as higher bracket Competitive, having Phoenix Protocol on a Radiancelock can be a godsend. So long as the enemy's pushing you, or you're based in critical territory, you'll have a fantastic uptime on a support super which gives everyone on your team god status while they're based inside. And Chromatic Fire also, because it works the same way Dragonfly does, but can also stack with Dragonfly. Meaning ad clear becomes a breeze and a single precision kill can provide excellent mileage.

Isz Novem I’m a stick with cool guy on tier lists for now he actually finds uses that most people look pass. I guess DPS is good but if we are forced to team play in high situations I find warlocks to be the better than titan or hunter. Support from warlocks is deadly if used properly. That walking empowerment from the well of radiance linked with claws of ahamkara is deadly when used properly. Two empowerment moving rifts with EP shotty 10 seconds wtf I don’t see how that wasn’t even thought of. I used the claws with thunder lord empowerment and shredded those nightfall strikes. I don’t know I think he needs to play with warlocks a lot more and reevaluate his tier list. The Phoenix protocol is 30 seconds of empowerment the DPS in that is crazy I don’t see how he ranked it as “eh” but I guess that’s just my small opinion with only two exotics I named.
Jangy Jangles Well is good for dps, but you usually don’t need to spam them in activities.
Khari Webster might not need to spam em but it’s fun as hell if whoever getting the buff actually use it and don’t run out as soon as there health regen. A see a lot of people get the regen and leave but don’t take advantage of the empowerment buff.
If you pair chromatic fire with attunement of fission (dark matter ability) then you constantly get you dark matter buff, which is very useful for both pvp and pve

Stacking wells in gambit with Phoenix protocol can be super fun and can help you clear those waves.
Let's be real here, Warlocks don't even need exotics when they have Nova Warp and Handheld Supernova. In PvP that is.

Warlock only has nova warp meanwhile titan has sentenal both hammers n arc smash. And they all have the shoulder charge ability now. dawnblade top tree is a waste storm caller is nerfed and nova bomb is a joke compared to bladebarrage

Ragnar Lothbrok _ that's what we do. It's just annoying seeing people complain about it all the time when hunter blade barrage has a higher usage stat. It if was truly the best everyone would use it.
The winter's guile also becomes less effective in group play. The time you have to get to the next enemy isn't very long and if your team mates kill things before you can get to them, you can't keep your stacks going, and you can't heal from devour without the kills

Sun bracers senergize really well with top tree dawn blade and either fighting lion or a shot gun of some kind. Its extremely powerful in gambit as well for a full add slayer set up easily getting 80+ kills each game
The explosions from chromatic fire can kill in crucible so def valuable. Also try contraverse hold with charged vortex nades, the multi hits can proc the grenade regen and you can get full grenade back almost 100% of the time.
For the chromatic fire. In terms of pvp it depends on the situation for it to be good. When enemies group up and team shoot and you happen to kill one with a headshot and then everyone get burned in the explosion could make a huge difference
The Sunbracers are an even better option now, with the top-tree solar and the wacky ranged attack on melee. No need to spec much of anything into discipline, just be airborne when you kill a few reds and your melee is charged, take out one with the "melee" and it's solar grenade rain time. I need to give the Skull some time with void though, that nova bomb recharge looks juicy. But then, Nezerac's with some extra grenade mods and a demolitionist void weapon is also nutty. Great choices for warlocks out there.
PvP wise, stag and starfire protocol. Stag gives a lot of rifts which pairs especially well with damage rift shenanigans (bodyshotting arbalest hello?), phoenix protocol goes well with mid tree solar lock, 2 overshield nade charges is good. Ophidian aspect could be good if you can get one with the right reloader perk, ophidian+enhanced hc loader and you can pick something other than outlaw on your HC while still having very quick reloads, now you'll just have em always, not just after a precision kill. The global weapon handling buff is also nice for comboing weapons.
i know this was posted a while back, but i urge you to give sanguine alchemy another shot.
empowering rift with either devour or heal nade in terms of abilities. weapons would be an aggressive sniper and whatever else you want (i personally choose high fire rate autos with good stability, but i'm also bad at the game, so yeah).
what this lets you do:
set up a rift right around the corner of a common LDA (linear danger area in military speak) and peak it like you would with a normal sniper build, BUT it comes with the added benefit of wall hax, body shot 1hko's, radar while scoped, and with the new stat mechanics you can have 100 in recovery (which i've heard is the meta choice right now) and get rift every 40- seconds (especially if you have the void class item mod that reduced class ability cd after using it).
i SUCK at using snipers. everyone ever has always been able to constantly head shot me with snipers, but i've always found myself shooting the sky whenever i use them. but after finding out about this build, i finally started making progress on those stupid sniper quests and such.
