One day, when you grow up, you'll realize you're merely echoing the generations that came before as they too looked back on their own ignorant childhoods.
The message of this song is that we always do not appreciate all that we had unless it has been taken away from us. This song reminds of of the relationship between my mom, my aunt, and my uncles toward my grandpa who died on February 1, 2024. When he was alive, they weren't very close to him and often argued with him. But when he died, they all realized how supportive my grandpa actually was to them.
I think it was just as relevent in 1970 as it is today. Sidenote: I inherited my Nan's 5 bedroom Federation house on a quarter of an acre in the middle of Sydney. Over the years I have been made considerable offers to by the house by developers. I've always refused. Now my daughter is living there and subletting 2 bedrooms to pay for her living expenses whilst she is at university. My Dad grew up in that house, which makes 4 generations residing there at different times.

Trent Williamson I know it's a cover, but for a cover to be so good says a lot right. Music ain't the same any more. All I see are money hungry artists, with no soul or passion. But that's is just my opinion.

When I was a kid it was the Joni Mitchell version that I always remembered playing on the radio. This version had the same effect. It really captured the vibe of the original. Amazing how a good remake can affect people similarly although generations apart.
I will forever associate this song with when I was first hired as a probation officer. I felt like I had fallen into a shark tank; the people were so aggressive and non-accepting of me. I had no law enforcement or military background. My degree was in psychology. I was very different from my fellow probation officers. I started graduate school and that job the same week. It wasn't easy. It was 2002 and I remember when I was in my new office looking through my new cases (and so overwhelmed!) and putting some things on the shelves and then put on the radio. This song was playing. Little did I know that I would come to love that job and my coworkers would grow to respect me. I had to earn that. It was rough but I got through it. I regret ever leaving that job but I wanted to use my graduate degree ----and not in law enforcement. Gosh...how I regret that. It was the best job with the best supervisor and team of people you could ever ask for. Like the song says, "You don't know what you got until it's gone." Wish I would have been more prudent :-((
Unlike most songs, which become less and less relevant throughout the years and decades since they were released, this is one of the few songs that actually has a more important meaning for modern society today then it did back then. It continuously becomes more and more relevant as our society progresses (or in some cases digresses).
In my country Malaysia we recently had flooding on the east side all because they keep paying paradise to put up a parking lot. Cut down the trees, make the land flat and put up some buildings which means no trees to collect water and no hills for the water to run down. :/ I don't get why people are full of greed and can't protect nature and the world's rainforests.
Sheila Nacional don't lose hope my brother is 33 and he just recently found someone he loves, got married, and now has a baby :) sometimes you have to put yourself out there. don't wait for people to find you. go find them!
This song hits home to people like me who are old enough to remember wooded areas that we played in, that are now shopping centers and apartment buildings. They literally paved our childhood play zones, pretend war zones, ect to put up parking lots.
They paved the bball court and badminton court to put up an empty lot for events and a seated pavilion respectively but never used it. And they wonder why children don’t engage in sports these days.
This song was ahead of its time. I was 7 when this came out, and I heard it on the radio and loved it, but I didn't know what it was. I had to get an adult to take me to media play and tell the worker this song I am looking for had lyrics that said, "They paved paradise, to put up a parking lot" in hopes of him recognizing it. He goes, "I know what you're talking about!" Takes me to the Counting Crows CD and tells me it's Big Yellow Taxi. What an adventure it was to just find and own 1 song that you liked. Now, you can just Google oooh bop bop bop and find 7 different ways to instantly download this song, haha.
You really don't know what you have until it's gone. I used to spend so much time with it. But then one day, it just disappeared. I miss it everyday and long for it to come back. I don't know if it will but I guess I'll just hope for the best. :)
these are one of those songs u hear on the radio all the time, sing the wrong lyrics all the time and recognise it whenever you hear it but never bother to search it up because you cba even if it means after 10 years. i finally found it.
I was listening in 1970 and I'm listening today. I have heard so many re-makes of everything I was listening to in the 60's and 70's that it really must have been a magical time to be alive. It was. Nothing will ever be like it again. But, this version of Joni MItchells song...is wonderful. I can re-live two era's now. Going for 3...we'll see.
As long as we have unchecked environmental destruction and urbanisation, this song will always be relevant Sadly that also makes it timeless as we are here 50+ years later
I get why someone might hate this cover but I love it. The overall vibe of it, the fact they gave a new life to this tune, and those adlibs from Vanessa just make the entire song.
@@t.e.burgos3263 Supposedly a review of the cover written by The Village Voice upon its release was archived onto Joni Mitchell's website. I'm not sure if it was her who archived it or someone on her team, but I highly doubt she didn't dislike this cover. She was one of those more eccentric, artsy alternative/folk artists who didn't try to fit in any of the industry norms or boxes at the time, and she was also egotistical to a certain extent.

Hearing this song from beginning to end takes me back to nostalgia lane (i know its memory lane but I wanted to try something fancier sounding, lol) and I can't help but shed tears. not of joy,not of sadness, but a little bit of both when I hear this song. "Sometimes to move forward into the future, you've got to look back to the past" forgot where i heard that from but I think in this case, it works
This song always gives me shivers. Just amazing harmonies and arrangement and words
It's a cover
@@aaronf4178 nice. not sure how that adds or subtracts from the sentiments.
@@00dredd Thank you. Too funny. I was thinking the same thing and was going to comment, but you beat me to it. Oh, and did you know, (insert useless information here ).
I just worked with these cats four days ago.. Everybody turned into a grown up. Father time comes for us all. They were still super cool and friendly.
That song sure brings back some memories.😊
WHY DON'T THEY MAKE MUSIC THIS GOOD ANYMORE!!
Bare in mind this song was written in 1970 but yeh, good cover
Trent Williamson I know it's a cover, but for a cover to be so good says a lot right. Music ain't the same any more. All I see are money hungry artists, with no soul or passion. But that's is just my opinion.
I Agree with you, i just hope theres someone out there can make this kind of quality music
If you can't find musicians with passion you're fucking lazy
BlackHoon yeah kool
He has a wonderful voice!
Holy shit this is a throwback, I haven't heard this song in years.
I know what you mean. This song came out when I had my last year in school and I haven't heard it until a few years ago.
Till its gone hits different. uuuhh bup bup bup
the world seemed better wen songs like this made charts
OMG yes. 😭😭😭😭
It was!!!
Only because people didn't know what was REALLY going on.
I 2nd that😢
Goddamit i swear
Did you know the Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton didn't film the video together, but the video flows so nicely that you probably wouldn't notice it.
And they put up a F*CKING lot
heard this in "two weeks notice". fell in love at the first time
Yes. Me too 😍
Me too!
couldnt agree moreee
Watching it now. Got me here 🙂

Absolute belter of a song. Reminds me of a childhood holiday to Bournemouth with my late Granddad and Late Father when this song was released.
I remember this always playing on the radio when i was a kid . miss my childhood
Like the song says, "You don't know what you got until it's gone." Wish I would have been more prudent :-((
I just love this song, I love the messsage it sends out, relates to any situation, dramatic or not. You will not KNOW until it's GONE.
One of my playlists long lasting ever
This never gets old.
Unlike most songs, which become less and less relevant throughout the years and decades since they were released, this is one of the few songs that actually has a more important meaning for modern society today then it did back then. It continuously becomes more and more relevant as our society progresses (or in some cases digresses).

Looks at the suggested videos, spots "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.

ApocalyptikKat "(or in some cases digresses)." I think you mean 'regresses'. I like your interpretation though.
Lisa Loves Music im in Malaysia too.
I can remember listening to this song back in the 70's sung by Joni Mitchell.
Loved it then, and love this cover by Counting Crows.
💪🏻😆✌🏻🚕👍🏻👍🏻⏳
Awesome cover!!!
One of the best covers, bar none
I remember my childhood listening to this song all the time on the radio
the chorus gives me a happy sad feeling if anyone knows what I mean.. it's amazing.
I know exactly what you mean
yup
+Hannah PYT feel ya
+Hannah PYT i know what you mean. and im 31 now and still fuckin single. makes me sad :-(
Sheila Nacional don't lose hope my brother is 33 and he just recently found someone he loves, got married, and now has a baby :) sometimes you have to put yourself out there. don't wait for people to find you. go find them!
I hope it hits home enough to know this is a cover of a Joni Mitchel song.
@@cmoneill laughable thing to say.
@@sweetpopz they paved paradise just for money , so sad ,
Ooo bop bop bop bop
The Melody is just just that important!!!
Ugh, its like they sucked all the melody out of Joni's uber catchy original 🤢
I absolutely love Vanessa's voice on this
she literally only said 3 words over and over
@@ethanmoua49 so, she did it well.
Early 2000s; so awesome.
Unfortunately, this was filmed just months after 9/11.
Declan Haselhurst This video was released in 2003 I think, idk about Joni's tho.
who thought 20 years have passed since this song came out in 2002.... 90s and early 2000s was the best time of my life...
I agreed with this
This song came out in 1970 bruh
Nostalgie pur ❤
I’m one of those people who don’t usually like covers of classic songs. There’s only a handful of covers I like. But I love this one!
Have you listened to Bad Wolves cover of Zombie? Whew that's a good one too.
Joni Mitchell would agree. Her style changed drastically in later years. Her lyrics are still the very best.
I remember when this song came out, I was about 13 :((( i am 32 now , time goes by so quickly, greetings from Turkey
It certainly was ahead of it's time considering Joni Mitchell originally recorded it in 1970.
Another well told story makes another great song. I 'm blessed to have the original album by Joni Mitchell!!!
This song made me smile and go to sleep in 2003s. Thank you ❤.
haven't heard this song in 12 years.. nostalgia overload
Right lol
Last time I heard this was in 2009 in primary school
I was like two when this song came out and it's still better than half they shit they play now
Spoken!
+tyler boyer If you want to be nostalgic for the early 2000s pick a song that was actually written in that time. This song is originally from 1970.
You really don't know what you have until it's gone. I used to spend so much time with it. But then one day, it just disappeared. I miss it everyday and long for it to come back. I don't know if it will but I guess I'll just hope for the best. :)
BTW, I'm talking about Internet,
I can say the exact same thing, except I'd be talking about my ex girlfriend..
Amazing song, adds to the original classic. Love it!
these are one of those songs u hear on the radio all the time, sing the wrong lyrics all the time and recognise it whenever you hear it but never bother to search it up because you cba even if it means after 10 years.
i finally found it.
As " covers" go, this is truly one of the best.
Right! I wonder if Joni ever suspected that someone like these guys would cover it. It's like what Hendrix did with all along the watchtower.
True💯
This is a beautiful cover.
"you don't know what you got till it's gone".
It's 2021 and this song remains a masterpiece. ❤️
Considering it was written in 1970. Yeah.
Timeless, and ever apposite.
Just put up a parking lot
@@danspawn85 The great Joni Mitchell, yes
As long as we have unchecked environmental destruction and urbanisation, this song will always be relevant
Sadly that also makes it timeless as we are here 50+ years later
I get why someone might hate this cover but I love it. The overall vibe of it, the fact they gave a new life to this tune, and those adlibs from Vanessa just make the entire song.
This is just an 'elevator/department store' version of Joni's original.
Did Joni Mitchell ever express her opinion of this cover? I love the original AND the cover BTW.
Heard this song for first time in a long time a week. The shivers I got. Oh man. Best feeling in the world.
@@mudda90210 She'll still be getting royalties on it - I bet she won't mind those! ☺
Counting Crows : Wanna join us on this song?
Vanessa : Should I bring my piano?
Crows : No Need
f*ck laughed so hard on this!!!!! hahahahhahaha
Lol
She wasnt even with the band in the music video, i bet they had a fight or sth
She probably left her piano on the parking lot
nah, leave it on the trailer today
Lovvvvvve this song and can't wait to cover this with my guys.
Funny that you want to cover this because technically this is a COVER! This is not the original song. This was originally Joni Mitchell song
@@Patrick19833 ok
I remember this song would always play before the bell in primary school. This song reminds me of all those moments, the playground, the oval, the benches my friends and I would eat at. Simpler and better times. You truely never appreciate how good something was til it’s gone 🥲❤️
Their arrangements are always so GOOD! Awesome band, see them live if you can.
I see no lies here XD
Oh wow I agree. I’m sure their performance would be amazing
Two decades ago, Counting Crows and Carlton released this hit. Catchy tunes like this never get old!
It's from the 70s this is a cover.
Uh it was good. I much prefer the original by Joni Mitchell 1970. So no it wasn't there Hit.
Dude this song is 53 years old. Orginal by Joni Mitchell.
Bhebhekoh
And that’s the exact reason why we still listening at it today :)
Only 37M views? Gosh, they deserve much more!
