    Really impress with how fair you were being to the Olympus camera considering the name your channel. I was expecting some bashing of the smaller sensor but instead I got a great review of the camera. Great job! I use all the major brands so I always like seeing new things from each company.

      Charles Le Thank you very much for the comments and feedback ;) The system is awesome and extremely capable is the fact. Sony still offers a better bang for the dollar as far as image quality goes, but when you look at the entire system Olympus has some huge advantages!

    I am an OLY shooter and this is the best video of an OLY or PANA camera I have seen. You mentioned that you don't use the best lenses, but the 25 f1.8 is right up there. Obviously the long zoom is not, but try the 40-150 f2.8 and it will blow your socks off, as will the 300 f4 that is coming out next spring. All the prime lenses are top quality image wise and the 75 f1.8 is one of the sharpest lenses DXO Mark has tested. I switched from NIKON pro equipment to a kit around the EM1 with top glass and could not be happier.

      ForViewingOnly Thanks man, The 3-axis stabilization is unbelievable and way better than I expected, honestly. The wind was really bad the day I filmed that footage. I honestly thought the video would be useless due to the extreme wind. At least 15mph I would say, but it came out extremely smooth!

    This review sold me on this camera a few months ago. I couldn’t afford the mark III and the EM10 mark III wasn’t weather-sealed plus I don’t need the 4K video. When I move on up and get a full frame (in addition to my Oly 5II) I’d love to get one of the Sony a7 series depending on budget at the time. Thank you so much for a non-biased and non-wanky review. So many reviewers automatically pooh pooh M43 cameras out of ignorance or ego. Thank you for not doing that.

    The image stabilization at 600mm effective FL is amazing, it looks better than some un stabalised cameras on rigs using 50mm lenses. I've seen the olympus e-m1 make shots with the 12mm f1.8 and 12-40mm f2.8 that look like steady cam shots partly because of the ergonomics but mostly because of the stabilization. The constant aperture pro lenses allow for zooming without any change to brightness or DOF (besides slight change from increased focal length). It should be the ULTIMATE video rig, but because of the lack of modes and options for recording it just isn't. If they put out a firmware update with 4k and various other resolution and frame rate options, including 4k/1080@30 and 24fps and 720@60 or faster, then they would have an industry shaking device. The IBIS, color and contrast, lens performance and range as well as the size and weight of the package is close to perfect if it weren't for that one video issue that they *should* be able to fix with software...but haven't.

    One very important thing to keep in mind with Olympus micro 4/3 is that the stabilization is in the camera body which allows you to use other manufacturer's lenses, and still stabilize them.

    I picked up an EM5 mkI quite cheap and I'm really enjoying the fast yet small lenses. The 45mm 1.8 is a bargain, the 60mm macro is reasonably priced and the 12-40 2.8 is excellent. I've got the 17mm and 40-150mm 2.8 and 1.4 tele-convertor on order so hopefully they are not too far away. Throw in high quality weather sealing and I've got a really great hiking setup.
    Ultimately my a7 takes better photos especially in low light but my nex6 will be sold. Good camera but most of the good glass is for full frame and therefore it's no longer a compact setup. I just end up taking my A7.
    Looking forward to your review on the A7rII

    Hi Jay!
    Thanks for the review! I finished watching all 17 mins of this, haha..
    I've tried all of the latest camera in the past 4 years. I got a G.A.S syndrome I guess.. the most recent ones that is worth mentioning are: Sony a7 dan A7R, Fuji X-T1, PANASONIC GX7, NIKON D600 & D750, and Olympus OMD EM5 Mark II.
    After all of those cameras and as well as their moderate-best lenses, I can confidently say that the one making the best picture quality is Nikon D750. I took Fuji XT1 to Europe last year, and used that the whole time. Not really loving the result. The watercolor effect is really apparent on some photos and the aggressive noise reduction is very apparent.
    Sony A7, while I love it, the lenses are too large and expensive. While I love ZEISS lenses, the option for people that is on a budget and just want to try the camera with decent lens while saving for the better lenses is practically non existant. Maybe only the 35mm f2.8. I already dislike the Sony color, I can't explain why. Maybe it's too... transparent?
    After a lot of contemplating and being scolded by my gf for wasting money buying and selling cameras, I've decided to settle down. I chose MFT. I'm just an enthusiast, I don't print, and I don't get paid for the pictures I took, so getting the best image quality is really debatable priority for me.
    I love to travel and frankly, APSC sensor is really a moot point for me. Either go smaller or jump to FF because FF cameras and cheaper nowadays and their APSC vs FF lenses are quite similar in size anyway. When I travelled for 1 1/2 months around EU, the Fuji I carried is quite heavy after lugging it around with only 2 lenses from 9 am to 10 pm. Their lenses weight average at around more 450-600gr. In that note, carrying a DSLR is an outright no for me because then I'd want to leave it at the hotel.
    Last point is due to the fact that when you're travelling and carry a big camera with a big lenses, you might as well yell that you're a tourist and you're taking a picture. Not to mention the looks I got with my Fuji XT1+10-24mm.
    MFT for me is the only mirrorless system in the market that is still relevant to be called "mirrorless". The reason why they exist is because we want something smaller, without sacrificing too much on the picture quality in the first place. While Sony and fuji tries but they can't hide the fact that some of their lenses are just as big as the DSLR counterpart. Sony tries to trick us (In my opinion, don't get offended anyone) with giving us all the focal length we want, but all in f4. To make us think that the system is success at making FF gear smaller. Try to make zeiss equivalent on f2.8 now and what will you get? SONY A mount lenses.
    So, what's the point? Yes, for me the picture quality is better compared to MFT (Not that much though vs APSC) but at the end, the price and the option of the lenses is what's important for many people. In that case, MFT wins.
    This is just my personal opinion and I just want to give a small comment that maybe could be helpful to anyone based on my own expenses and experiences.
    Jay, I really been waiting for your review after seeing you had the unbox in vid of the camera. Initially I've hold back to purchase because I want to see what's your take on it coming from all Sony cameras owner. I couldn't wait because the stock was low and I had one store to hold it for me for 3 days (all those time checking TH-cam for your update anxiously haha). At the end they told me that they can't hold it anymore, they have to sell soon. So I bought it with 12-40mm f 2.8 PRO and 45mm f 1.8. So far it's been a very enjoyable experience and I hope it's the same for your personal use.
    BTW, have you tried the art filters? I know it's not for anything serious and just a "toy" feature for some, but maybe you can give it a try. I especially love the "dramatic tone".
    Jay if you're still keeping the EM5 II in the future, I'd suggest the best bang for the buck 45mm f 1.8. Nowadays it can be had for as low as $200-$250. Personally I can't wait for the later to be released 7-14mm f2.8 PRO lens.
    This is a very long comment and I'm sorry for this. Probably will never write a comment this long anymore. Shows how much I'm excited and appreciate your video.
    Cheers JAY and thank you.
    PS: Do you do any Startrail or just astrophotography? I heard em5 II is good at that and I'm really curious but clueless at the same time.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tora Kun Thanks for taking the time to write such an awesome reply ;) I'm at a very similar point in life where trying the other gear is a why not and also a must for some reason. I have a feeling I will not like the Fuji Watercolor effect after I review a system, but I still want to! Nikon would be fun, but with such limited time in my life I would rather go with Pentax or Panasonic next I think. Why not!
      I really appreciate all the extra insight about the systems as well! The lens selection for the Olympus is incredible and I figured I would get Pro lenses next time perhaps once they get a Sony sensor in place ;)
      As far as Startrail or just astrophotography, I have not. I really want to, but I have two very young children, so life does not really allow for such outings at this time. Hopefully in a year or two though that will become part of the photography arsenal of fun! The stars interest me a great deal ;)
      The OM-D does have some special features built in for Astro Photography, but I have not used anything in that regard, sorry.
      Thanks again for sharing all the info and have a great day,
      Jay

    You're making it real hard to go for the Sony. I just fell upon your site (subscribed), and whats tough about it is that I have this camera. Very good review. One of the best in fact. And...I only have ONE problem. Only one. On the few times that I need to do a high and tight crop, I can see the limits of the 16mg and the sensor size. Seen some pixilation almost like a point-n-shoot. But there is a dilemma for sure. Took some shots of my son and his son. Made me look like a Pro! Fabulous portraits. Clear, seperation, and pop.
    Anyway... I have the Techart adapter on the way and when it comes I'll either get the A7II or A7rII. (Incidentally, I had the original A7. Found my way to Olympus because the Sony A7 lenses just kept getting bigger--messes up the concept for me.)
    I'll watch your videos. Thanks!

    Nice overview. I've been a fan of Olympus since I bought the E-M5 and then the E-M1. Great cameras and they'll only get better. That IBIS is insane. You don't understand how good it is until you actually test it. I don't have Oly cameras anymore though. Maybe some day in the future I'll get another one. I have good memories of my experience with Olympus.

    Hey there, excellent review. I really enjoyed it and perfect for casual shooters like myself. I recently bought the a6000 but I am struggling with lens selection and price. I was thinking of downgrading to a micro 4/3 system so I could afford the lenses in the future. I really enjoy the a6000. It is a fantastic shooter with amazing image quality, but everything is priced really high and out of my budget. What do you think about making the switch to a micro 4/3 system? Especially with the lenses you had. Thats all I would need I think.

    • @andreastheodorou9807
      @andreastheodorou9807 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Karol Pietrzak It isn't a downgrade, it is a switch to m4/3. Downgrade means that the system you are switch to is inferior...

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Karol Pietrzak It's not a bad move at all and as Andreas Theodorou said below, it's not really a downgrade either. Just a different format (sensor size) that offers killer output quality just like the Sony cameras. Lenses are smaller and therefore cheaper on average... The Lenses I had were a lot of fun, but many others have suggested the 40mm and the 75mm I believe as must haves. Just read through the comments here for some great additional info...
      The kit lenses from Sony are fairly cheap for the A6000. The 50mm f/1.8 OSS lens, the 55-210mm lens for example. Great options for the money! Sigma also makes affordable primes that are very good optical performers at budget pricing! The Zeiss zooms and primes are a lot of money I hear ya....
      I hope that helps,
      Jay

    Hello Jay
    Thanks for a great review
    actually I want to buy new camera for both Stills and Video, and I have seen it or reviews
    between Sony A7II, Panasonic GH4 and Olympus OMD 5 II
    which one do you recommend?
    my best Rad

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rahmat Rad Hello and thank you for the nice comments ;) First off, you can't really go wrong with any of those cameras just to be fair. However, the A7 II has the best sensor and image quality for sure. The GH4 has better video options from what I understand and same with the Olympus. The major issue you have to deal with is lens cost and size. full frame vs M43 is a huge difference. Do you want large heavy lenses? Or would you prefer a lighter weight option with more lenses to chose from? Full frame is going to be heavier and larger almost every time, but you do get something for your burden. It's not like a waste of money or anything like that. The Olympus has the most lenses to chose from and the 5-axis stabilization is more effective than the Sony due to the sensor size and actual stabilization hardware. Panasonic has some excellent looking lenses as well, but not as many as Olympus.
      In the end I would go for the full frame A7 II personally, but can totally understand not wanting the extra size and weight depending on your situation. I don't really care and have a Nex-6 for my light weight long haul needs....
      I hope this helps a little,
      Jay

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      chevypowertogo Yes the sensor size is larger on the Nex-6 and has the same number of pixels. Therefore the pixels can be larger and less in quantity per mm for example. Less pixel dense is the way I think of it, but it might not be the correct term...

    I enjoyed your review as usual Jay. The Oly is a good looking camera with a lot of cool features it seems but getting to the bottom line would u say the a6000 takes better pictures...@ half the price. I noticed the Touit 32mm is on sale for $499 & they updated it to the hybrid AF phase detection, put that on the a6000 for $1050. & boy going by your reviews on that lens & the a6000 would the Oly even come close?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sski66 Well, I would go with the larger sensor A6000 for sure! I don't care about the cool features, killer build quality, and other advantages enough in the end ;) The IQ is better on the larger sensor and the extra resolution is also preferred by myself. Plus, as you said the camera is much cheaper! Now, you put the Touit lens on there and Wow, hard to beat, other than full frame!
      The IQ on the Olympus is really good though in the real world as you will see from the high res sample photos that will be in the written review. As I said in the video review, the smaller sensor offers the killer lenses in a small package and at a faster speed for arguable less money. It's a different system that is super versatile due to the huge array of lens options and ruggedness.
      The Sony mirrorless systems can't compete in the native lens department unless you take advantage of using lens adapters and a-mount lenses that are huge and heavy. Huge and heavy is the issue with the larger sensors. The Sony native E-mount lens line is building though and I use adaptable full frame lenses on my A7r in the meantime... I want the new FE 24-240mm lens in particular!
      In the end it's different strokes for different folks I honestly feel. I have no issue with the output quality offered by Olympus in the real world, so It's not fair at all to bash in that regard. Also, the Olympus with a Touit equivalent lens would also look amazing in the real world output!
      One thing I can't help but think of is how awesome the Sony RX10 was, and how I would rather have that all-in-one camera solution, then a mirrorless 4/3rds system in the end. The 1inch sensor is alsmost as big and with the constant f/2.8 24-200mm Zeiss power zoom lens, it's perfect range...
      The killer old school full frame lenses available, also makes the larger sensor Sony cameras more appealing to me.
      just a few thoughts on the matter,
      Jay

      ***** IQ is definitely better on A6000 but those "cool" features that you say will make you actually take a photo that with A6000 you can only dream about. For example the 5 axis stabilization in the body works amazing. You can and I am not even joking take a stable 1/4 exposured photo that with A6000 you would need tripod for sure. Not to mention in the long run the E-M5II will be cheaper with its vast cheap collection of lenses. Try buying 3 great lenses for the A6000 vs 3 great for olympus system. Anyway my 2 sents. Its not all just about IQ. Some features actually help you take photos otherwise impossible. Full articulated screen might be a joke but it will let you take weird and extreme angles you could never thought of.

    • @Jason_Hermann

      Bora Markovic Great points and I agree those features are awesome and if you can utilize them to get more images or otherwise impossible shots, it's a great thing. The Olympus certainly has a huge edge in hand-holding. 5-axis vs nothing or just the lens OSS for example on the A6000. Thanks again for the comments!

    This review is awesome, thank you. Do you think it's worth to buy the Mark II instead of the original? I don't have a lot of money, so if I get the II, I'll probably end up with two lenses, the kit and the 45mm f/1.8. If I get the mark I version (or the E-M10), I could probably have at least 4 lenses, the kit, 19mm (sigma), 30mm (sigma) and 45mm f/1.8, or even try to get only the body and go for 19, 30, 25 and 45mm. Again, is it worth buying the latest EM5? Thanks in advance.

      +Dave King Grab if you can the 12-40 Pro lens for the best high clarity all rounder, IMO. If you're looking for something purely for travel, then the 45mm 1.8 lens shown does a surprisingly good job at street/candid shots thanks to the 5-axis stabilisers. Obviously the price of the pro series can turn some people to the lesser quality standard models, but up against the prices of other lenses in the market, they're excellent value.

    What's the context of this review?
    Did you order the camera for yuorself or did Olympus send you lucky dog a sample review?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sebastiaanvanwater I just felt like reviewing something different honestly. I always review Sony gear and no New cameras are out that interest me at the moment, but the OM-D sure did peek my interest. I then figured the smaller M43 sensor would be a great comparison considering the Sony's are larger APS-C and Full Frame.
      I also new that Sony had partnered with Olympus a while back and hoped that the 5-axis sensor stabilization would come over to Sony which it did. Now Sony is making a new killer M43 sensor and I bet it is for Olympus ;)
      Hands-on at the PhotoPlus Expo in NYC I also was very impressed with the Olympus booth with the incredible amount of killer lenses to chose from. I actually talked with a Olympus enthusiast user for a few minutes and he had the 40-150 f/2.8 lens mounted to his OM-D and was super impressed! We swapped cameras for a minute, because he was very curious in the full frame solution as a second system.
      So, with all that in the background I figured I should review the camera and asked BHPhoto to send me one(30 days) I also wanted a fresh perspective on the best competition, so I can more accurately review the Sony cameras. I learned a lot from the OM-D design and user experience for sure. Some huge advanatages over the Sony system as I mentioned in the review....
      The gear goes back in a few days and I will getting some Sony lenses next probably, maybe some cameras not sure yet..

    i have the a6000 but looking at the Panasonic GX8... your thoughts?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Studat I think the Panasonic GX8 amzn.to/1MU0DTw is a killer option for sure! I prefer the larger A6000 sensor for low light photography, but for good light and video the GX8 has way more to offer than the A6000 in most cases. 4k internal recording, Dual IS technology, for example if that matters to you. Build quality is also beefier on the GX8 in my opinion from what I can tell. I never used one though just to let you know... I have seen many reviews though, and that camera is in the top 3 pretty much everywhere on the web for video in particular... Larger sensors can offer much better low light performance, but they are much heavier and more expensive to glass up... I hope that helps a little?

    Great video Jay - as always - nice shots - your kiddos are so cute -
    So what are the odds that the A6100 will have 5 axis IBIS? now I hear that the new Axxxx will not be a A7000 but A6100 and is not a replacement for A6000 - all to complicated - so supposedly the A6100 will be sort of a NEX7 replacement but starts with A61xx - go figure - what I hear is there will be no 4K - I think I personally I prefer 5 axis IBIS over 4k now - but of course I am more of a shooter then video person - just think now Panasonic has a good 4k video shooter for beginners and intermediate users in the new G7 and a pro grade in the GH4 for the more advanced users - Sony has the A7s for the Pros but no entry level mode with 4K -
    Now Sony with a new A6100 so they better start adding lenses to the APS-C E mount system -
    So I think Panasonic leads the way in 4k affordable class - the EM5 m2 has improved video now but no 4K which I think is ok as it has the 5 axis IBIS -
    Anyone know if doing 5axis IBIS with 4k is not doable ? Sony does not have one and Panasonic does not have one - I guess the Panasonic GX8 that comes later this year will tell us as it has 3 axis IBIS now in the GX7 but I am sure slated for 4k so will be interesting to see if Panasonic will remove IBIS to do 4k or if they can do both -
    Again for the GX8 I would prefer a new 5axis over 4k for that camera as it is more of a stills camera - given they can only do one vs both -
    I have the EM5 and I think IQ is about the same as of what I have seen - but certainly much nice button layout on the new M2 - the display button on the original EM5 is just way to small and to close to another button - and I love the new Flip LCD - as one can do selfies and see what is video recording and it protects the LCD when packed away - However I still think Panasonic does the best Touch LCD like in the GX7 - all functions are Touch along with a Touch Shutter - so there are 5 Fn soft buttons available on the LCD - just fantastic - I love Fn buttons -
    I still think the OMD EM5 m2 is priced a bit steep in comparison to the Sony A6000 - but of course the A6000 is not weather sealed - but it has a larger sensor and almost a many features - not quire but close - So if the A6100 has 5 axis IBIS and weather sealed it will give the EM5 M2 some serious competition -
    I actually think the A6000 sensor gives a tiny bit better IQ - but not an advantage unless one uses a good lens and Sony has a much smaller selection - the 50mm F1.8 with IS is quite decent and well worth it for the money - just need more like that -

      igetsmart Thanks for the comments and detailed reply ;) I have been fallowing the rumors also, and it loks like it may be the Nex-7 replacement. If that is the case, it will be a better version of the A6000 and may have IBIS. It has been so long, it would make sense that IBIS might be a feature along with a new Tri-Navi camera body. Something many users have been waiting for a long time! A high end APS-C unit with weather sealing, silent shutter, Touchscreen?, 4k?, full manual controls, etc...
      If it were only a A6100 the features would only be a few things in my opinion and the camera body would be the same. Check out previous version revisions of the A5000 and A5100 for example... I could be wrong though, just speculating.
      Thanks again,
      Jay

      ***** It would not make much sense for them to include an IBIS system in there mid-range cameras because all of their lenses have OSS. It would be counter productive for them to include an IBIS while they have several lenses with OSS. It would be a waste of money for them. That is just my personal opinion. Otherwise your spending money on a body with IBIS, and even more on lenses with OSS. I think they will keep IBIS on there a7 models only.

      Karol Pietrzak The Sony E APS-C mount lacks lenses - but yes they do have a few like the 18-200 with OSS and the 50mm F1.8 with OSS and the 35mm F1.8 OSS - the 10-18 F4 -
      but there are some that do not like the 16mm F2.8 the 20mm F2.8 and the Zeiss lenses the 30mm macro -
      I say for the future it is better to have IBIS and not to have to replicate OSS in every lens as that just adds cost to the lens and weight - and sometimes not possible to put in OSS on small primes -
      To me IBIS is the way to go for the future - no if they can only do IBIS and 4K together

      Karol Pietrzak Excellent points, but you must remember all the manual lenses and lenses that don't have OSS, like the killer Ziess Touit lenses for example. Also the old school Minolta lenses, and so fourth, that many people use on these systems. It would be killer for that, and those are the people who want it in my opinion. It is counter productive otherwise for the OSS lenses, but the best quality optics available does not have OSS. Even for the A7 series, the Best lenses are non OSS Zeiss Batis etc....
      That being said, all the older lenses are designed for the 35mm format, so perhaps Sony will decide to go that way. I think it would be a big mistake though personally. The can still keep the A6000 series, just offer a more expensive quality tri-navi body design with IBIS alternative please :)
      Thanks again,

      igetsmart I totally agree. OSS has it's place and does offer some advantages withing the limitation of sensor movement to effect on IQ. The lens focal area is only so big, so that limits the amount the sensor can move without effecting the IQ sharpness int he corners and things like that. I don't know all the specifics, but that is what I was thinking the other day. So ultimately a combination of both that work together would be the best of the best I'm thinking. The engineers at Sony and Olympus are geniuses, so I think we may be surprised at what the come up with next... Organic sensors are coming at some point and I can't wait for that killer dynamic range they theoretically posses.
      Thanks again for the comments,

    Hi, would you recommend this camera for a beginner in 2019?
    I know you’re Sony guy but since you reviewed it in such an unbiased manner I figured your input could be a real confidence booster. Thanks for the video! Good review

      Yes, this is still a awesome camera at the end of the day for sure!

    Sensor size has no effect on lens size. You can just as easily build an equivalent lens that size on a Full Frame camera. Your 25mm F/1.8 is the same size as a 50mm F/3.6 Full Frame lens would be.
    So there is no advantage besides a smaller and lighter body at the cost of ergonomics and battery life.

    Small size is a virtue of its own. Meanwhile, someone had better scrape and paint that Green Bridge before it falls down.

    Next time take PRO lens and shoot RAW then see image quality. 25mm f/1.8 is cheap lens and do really good job for this money what cost 👌
