  • We know that the EM-5 Mark III is coming SOON; Jimmy met up with The Camera Project in New York to discuss what might be coming with the Mark III.
    It's been 3 years since the brilliant EM-5 Mark II arrived at Jimmy's house and it's been everywhere with his family. Not only is it a brilliant camera for his family, capturing every moment, but Jimmy also used it professionally for model shoots and weddings. What is it like in 2018? Still a capable camera?

    EM5 has been one of my favourite cameras of all time (regardless of generations). I love the balance of size, shape and features. Also sorry about the audio and video quality in my New York interview with Josh and Alison from The Camera Project due to a corrupted audio file and my incorrect front camera setting on the app setting on my iPhone X (I did use a BitPlay fisheye clip-on lens).

    Another great video Jimmy! I completely agree with you that the EM5 II is still a great camera. I was very fortunate to pick one up that was lightly used with a 12-40mm pro for 250 GBP. Such a joy to use and the results this pairing takes is wonderful!

    After my first HEAVILY used EM5-II died Feb. 2018 I considered the G9 and the EM 1-II.
    I realized I neither need 4K nor would I want anything less than the EM5-II IBIS.
    Choice was clear, I got this baby again, this time in silver :)

    I still have an old OM2n which I love. I also love my OM-D EM-5 MK 1 wish it had the simplicity of the old OMs. Sometimes find the menus a bit tiresome. The size is almost identical. I've been using Oly cameras since they first appeared. Love them.

    You're so right about the build of this camera - if I ever hand mine over to someone, I always warn them that it's heavier than it looks. I have the original E-M5 (bought it cheaply when the mkII was coming out), but I still think it's fabulous. It's a camera you just want to use all of the time.

      Thanks and absolutely, don't know why really, for some reasons, EM5 is the camera that always next to me. I can let go of my Leica, EM1 after work but the EM5 is just always there...weird... and creepy.

    Love the Camera Project channel and the EM5ii! Great video. I echo the mark iii wish lists you guys provided, and would add phase detect AF & better continuous AF tracking to the list. I know The EM1ii has these features, but I'm hoping to get them in a more affordable package.

    As anEM-5 Mk II owner myself, I feel the same way too about this camera. I wouldn't really call it a workhorse (though I've shot weddings with it before) but it's more of an everyday camera. One thing I do hope they'd be able to improve on the Mark III though would be the low light capabilities but then again the limitation is on the sensor size I guess. Keep up the great work, I really love your videos!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Khairil!! Technology will come but at pixel level, M4/3 sensor is no worse than APS-C or even Full Frame. It's physics. M4/3 is pretty decent actually, just the size, as you said, that makes it look worst than larger format. But it will improve I am pretty sure of it, just a matter of when. But I think, in photography, is about careful read about lights and shadows and understand the composition is more important, we didn't have ISO 6400 colour negatives before, we are pretty spoiled these days. Thanks again and glad you love our videos :)

      The dxo rating of the em1ii sensor showed a pretty big jump in low light performance for m43. As of yet, no other m43 from either Panasonic or Olympus has come close. Here's hoping that an em5iii can match that.

    I just bought this camera,and i'm really impressed. I know the new one is coming but i also know that olympus gives updates to older cameras to catch up new ones,and that one of many things i lke from them. I have fuji xt 10 and when i got this camera i never turn it on. I know limits,but with lots of features you can do alot. Live comp. is something that i do alot and even only with a kit lenses. I think go full in m4/3 system because i know limits and how to go around them. It's now about sensors,it about person and skill. Yes it helps to get much light in some low light stuff,but mostly what i do is long exp. and for that i have many options. :) Cheers!

    5:58 In a pinch, it is possible to engage the special "high-res" mode. Only in situations where there is no movement in the shot though. This is a great camera, and I have owned it since 2015 when it first came out. Like you mentioned, it is built like a tank! And that's speaking from experience, as I have dropped it a couple of times with the 12-40 m.zuiko 2.8 lens mounted. Lens and camera have survived each time!

    My main camera since 2015. Solid, silent, flexible, dependable. My only complain is the lack of PDAF which limits continuous AF and usability of legacy 43 glass. EM1 series always tempting, but I think I like the EM5 better. Waiting for the markIII
    I also use a backup Panasonic GM1 (tiny and similarly solid) and FX cameras for special occasions.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a long history about the EM5s. Both EM5 Mark I and Mark II were my second camera during my days as a Canon and Leica photographer and now I am using EM1 Mark II and PEN-F. EM5 still is my family camera and going everywhere with us. PDAS will be awesome but I did use 4/3 lenses on it, just a little slower.

    I love my em52 it's been my only camera for the past year with my 40-150 2.8 and 12-40 2.8 now I have the 45 1.8 and many legacy lenses I never have enough time to try everything. And you are right the em52 with grip and 12-40 it is heavy ,I've had people take pictures with it and that's the first thing they say how hefty it is. My only two complaints is the dial is hard to read in bright daylight since mine is the silver and I don't like the video play button I always have trouble finding it with my finger for some reason. Another very good video !

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Andy-pu2iv

    I'm a big fan of the EM5.2. I purchased mine a couple of years ago and I have absolutely no issue with "just" 16MP. I was coming from an E-1 with 5MP... I got hold of an MMF-3 so I could use my old lenses, but sold them and the MMF-3 when I replaced them with much lighter and more responsive glass.
    I'm an old amateur photographer that grew up when shooting 36 frames on a roll of film in an afternoon was extravagant. So having 300 frames per hour at my disposal is beyond my wildest dreams.... Doesn't make me any better though!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Andy! I do agree that MMF-3 and legacy 4/3 lenses doesn't work too well with EM5 II but it's ok on EM-1, hence I still use them. I do agree about film vs digital. I remember the days when I used to carry 10 rolls for my holiday and that was it. Nows, I can shoot hundreds if not thousands for each holiday, a little over kill :)

    I think this is going to be my new camera. I think its perfect, it has everything (thanks to the new upgrade) except an internal flash, but the external mini flash is a great solution. Also, I saw in another video that you can assign focus peaking and magnify to a function button ideal for use with vintage manual lens.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gabriela!!! Yeah that tiny mini flash is pretty cool, rotates and tilts. A very capable camera indeed! Yes I use focus peaking when I use some vintage lenses on the camera. Peaking was what lacked in Mark 1.

    I agree with almost everything about the review except the dynamic range. It's certainly not bad, but it's not as good as a lot of APS-C contemporaries. I'm thinking specifically of shooting things like landscapes, underexposing to preserve highlights, then brightening shadows in post production. Even older Fuji cameras with 16 MP sensors (X-T1, X-T10, etc.) do a noticeably better job; with the E-M5 Mark II (and really all M43 cameras, including newer 20 MP models) the noisiness creeps in even at low/base ISOs in a way APS-C cameras don't seem to struggle with. That said, the pixel shift feature (I think it's branded "hi-res shot") does an awesome job with long exposure landscapes and the RAW files from that process are really spectacular in terms of color, resolution, and ability to recover information!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Joshua! Well, you can't compare the 16MP sensors between Fuji and Olympus (or Panasonic) simple because of the sensor size. You have to compare with the 'equivalent' with same or similar pixel density on sensor. 16MP APS-C sensor has much larger micro lenses and can absorb more lights. But if you compare it with a, say 24MP APS-C sensor, looking at pixel level noise/DR, you will find that it's pretty equivalent. But in essence, you are right that Fuji's 16MP is better if you are looking at outright quality. And also, you can't compare the EM5 II sensor with today's APS-C sensors either as it's 3 years old now and the game has moved on. But it's still a very capable sensor given in the right hands.

    This camera is amazing! Im actually coming out with a video about it on my channel (probably the one AFTER my next one) - it still makes sense to own one. I agree. 4k would be nice. NOT variable. dont need 4k 60fps, but if theyre listening, do it! 120fps in 1080p with a decent bitrate would be awesome. I guess we will see. Hope a mark 3 comes out.

    Hey Jimmy, thanks for this channel work and especially for this video. What is you preferred ISO limit for the E-M5.2? Generally a special video about your experiences about High ISO and differences between E-M1.2 and E-M5.2 would be very interesting for me. I'm an owner of the E-M5.2 in Germany. Greetings!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate for watching! I can say that the difference between the two is about 1 stop. I can get good results at ISO6400 and 3200 on EM5 II. But ETTR (Expose To The Right) is always the rule of thumb on M43 system. It does better in highlights than shadows.

    Wow I'm surprised you didn't mention most of the below:
    The goods:
    1) the shutter sound
    2) the grip + battery grip feels really good
    3) the IBIS
    4) the image quality and SOOC jpegs
    5) the build quality you mentioned
    6) the tilty flippy screen
    7) the smartphone app integration for remote + photo transfer
    8) the m43 lens selection + adapters
    9) the size
    10) the customization
    The bads:
    1) the menu (the worst)
    2) the battery you mentioned
    3) the eye sensor to turn off the LCD is too sensitive. It can sense it like a hand's length away
    4) can't use the touchscreen to focus when using the viewfinder
    5) the continuous af
    6) single card slot
    7 the back button focus AF lock button doesn't feel good
    I've the camera for a while. Enjoyed it but eventually sold it.

      Thanks for watching anyway and well, we didn't include many points because it's been repeated so many times in different TH-cam videos and written reviews online. I don't need to repeat them and rather, I concentrate what's important to me as a photographer/user. Things that you mentioned are all valid but not that they bother me too much, all I need is something that takes great pictures :) I am a working pro for 12 years, used Canon and Leica M before and now Olympus.

    Thanks for making this video. I have question, I am planning to buy EM5 ii. Mostly I'll be using the camera for family documention (photo, vlog, or travel video with kids). From you and many other video reviews. I am impressed by the IBIS, but I am wondering if the autofocus in video capable/realible for my purpose above. Would be so glad if you have time to answer. Thanks.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching, EM5 II is a great camera but video may be lacking a little by today's standard, in particular autofocus since it's contrast detect only and also base on old AF algorithm so it's not very reliable if you want to follow something. If you need that, EM5 III is a vastly improved camera that addresses that.

    • @heriansya_
      @heriansya_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, it is nearly imposible to buy the EM5 III in Indonesia espesially secondhand. I found the new one on web, but price is not valuable anymore compared to other brands.. somehow. Anyway thank you for your opinion..

    Hey Jimmy. Thank you for the videos and putting out and honouring Olympus brand! I started out in Dslr with a Olympus e-420 back when was four thirds! But ended up in nikon where i am today! But considering i am not fully geared and can't really invest in higher level, I always wondered in trying out if Olympus would suffice me against my nikon d600 and full frame lenses! Always keen in understanding if Olympus and Fuji would be great way to change or even Sony due being full frame! Don't want to be biased so that's why i was keen to test in field to see how they compare! Always wanted to try longer than in a shop with sales man looking at me! Is there other Olympus Experience any time soon in London area?? Thank you and keep up! enjoy watching them

      Hi Bruno, many thanks indeed for your support! Olympus does indeed deserve more attention in this media-savy world. Olympus has been making cameras for many decades and most people don't realise how good they really are. I personally used Canon for 12 years and Leica for a few more before settling with Olympus. Their lenses, really, are amongst the best out there. I don't do lap tests, shooting charts or brick wall, all I know is use them to produce images, I am happy about the results and so do my clients who paid me to do the jobs. So that says a a lot. Are you in London? I do run workshops with Olympus that offers longer experiences so add me on FB (just find me under Jimmy Cheng with a hat!) I will let you know when. I am currently planning a couple.

    Back again :) If Olympus makes a EM5.3 and gives it hand holdable high resolution and updated AF and builds it like my Pen F as far as no screws high quality looks then it will sell like hot cakes. I am looking for a 2nd camera to sit next to my Pen F. The EM1X looks amazing so far and as rumored I want it but many people will not want to spend that much money. The EM5 updated will be very popular.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Terry, I think you are right. Just like Formular One racing, they have all the top techs and over the years, these techs will trickle down to high end then consumer cars, Olympus is employing similar strategy, EM1X will be a showcase for what they can currently do, technologically, then these techs, together with improvements on processor speeds and sensor techs, will then be made smaller and used in smaller bodies. So everything makes sense after all :) I am looking forward too all the future Olympus releases, exciting time.

    I am only interested into the performance of the Autofocus. Because I am looking for a lighter and smaller system in parallel to my Nikon D500 as sometimes I don't want or cannot carry around with me a my heavy DSLR incl. lenses. Especially the Olympus 300mm 2.8 I am interested in for birding and wildlife. Any idea on that?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you don't need tracking, EM5II can definitely performs. It will work well with all latest M.Zuiko lenses. The 300mm is f/4 not 2.8 but it's tiny for what it is (in equivalent terms 600mm!) But if you want tracking, I would propose the use of EM1 II for that. It's AF speed will shock you and on par with D500 if not batter. It also features many things that tailor for fast actions such as Pro Capture. So in short, if you won't need tracking and ultimate speed too much, EM5 II will work brilliantly and yes, it's tiny and fully weather sealed.

I am considering buying the EM-5 Mark II as my first ever interchangeable lens camera, and I am trying to figure out if it is in my price range when I consider all the lenses I might need (other than the kit lens!). Could you advise me on how many I would need for everyday photography, and which ones that are compatible with this camera are best value? Apologies if this is a very broad question!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kirsten, thanks for watching our review and we are glad you enjoyed it and found it useful! In additional auto kit lens, I would recommend you to get a standard prime, 25mm 1.8 as it’s a good general fast prime that will allow you to take low light shots and to blur the background when taking portraits. Then depends on what you want to do more often, you may also want to consider a 17mm 1.8 for landscape, travel, and documentary photos or 45mm 1.8 for more details and portrait work. If you are interested in more safari/wildlife photography, think about a longer zoom too. There are many out there and you are welcome to ask me again in the future once you get used to the camera and find out more about yourself as a photographer :)

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching mate. Well these are very different cameras. G9 is built and designed to take on the EM-1 II for professional M4/3 photographers and there’s a three years gap in technology. However, the EM-5 II is no slouch in stills even with a 16 MP sensor. That’s my opinion. G9 has greater dynamic range in low ISO and may be a stop better in low light. But it’s also a lot larger compare to EM-5 and costs more. Depends on what you shoot, EM-5 II is a great travel camera with weather seals and rugged build.

      Dmitry Brodsky thanks for watching mate. Well, I didn’t mention it because I would be repeating what hundreds of reviewers had done already and also partly because I have no problem getting shots that wanted or needed hence I didn’t mention it too much. If want more insight, I can say that in day time, AF is as quick as ever, not EM1 level but still quick. Low light does hunt a little but if you have used contrast base AF mirrorless cameras since the beginning, it’s the same old thing that hunts a bit due to lack of contrast. CAF is actually ok but you have to set it up lie AF confirm before shutter and do it in Low continuous then it will work fine.

In the new mk3 I want a stronger artic screen, the new sensor, oh gaud can they do a Sony eye auto, please, and a slightly bigger grip, please

      Thanks Zardos! Broken articulate screen? That's uncommon, I guess but I rare use my LCD but Tracey, as a videographer, uses the screen almost everyday and it's ok, well, on the EM1 II, and to me, the EM5 II has the same build so it shouldn't break that easily, do you knock about a lot or just simply opening and closing? AF, I agree, if Olympus can improve on the eye focus, like Sony, then they will have the best AF system in the M4/3 world. Grip? Umm... I like it as it is, small and light. You can add a grip afterward if you wish but I like it 'flat'.

It's just become a habit now and it does mean I am opening and closing many times. I was thinking this conserved battery power and of course protects the screen as I am often in very hot weather conditions. Maybe I am doing it wrong and I should just leave the screen open on my shooting adventure and just rely on the sleep function. I notice if the screen is permanently closed camera takes 3 or 4 secs to activate. Please what are your suggestions

    em10 mkii just seemed a better deal at $300 less.
    em5 just has the better, more adaptive screen.

      EM10 II is a great little cam too and if you don't need the better IBIS or fast frame rates or mic input, EM10 II is as capable as the EM5 II :) Thanks for watching again!

    Olympus' build quality is good but with horrible QC. It's all about lucky when you buy them. My E-M1 and E-M5 had dead pixels within 6 months (but they became stable now. Hot pixels didn't increase much in 2018).

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will relate the message to Olympus but in fact, purchases do sometime relies on luck. I had dead pixels with my Canon 5D before too. In fact, on Olympus, you can remap the pixel via menu so it rids the 'hot pixels' in the sensor. But if you have dead pixels on the back LCD, then it's not really upto Olympus, as well as other manufacturers, gets their LCD from a suppliers and they usually have a policy about 'defective' units when it's over a number or 'dead pixels'. To increase the 'acceptance' of LCDs, it means they need to check more and will also dispose more 'defective' ones, it will increase the cost of the parts and subsequently transferring the cost to us, buyers. There's a reason Leica sells way more as not only they hand-assemble and handmade the camera, they also have a much stricter QC, but you do pay 6 times the price of a PEN-F.

      Red35 - I think this ability to "remap" pixels is not well known and understood. Olympus itself does not talk about it; at least they should explain what exactly is going on there, and what improvements it provides for users (as I understand it, low light performance gets better, not only removing hot pixels).

    You said it’s not good for people who do a lot of video, why not?

      Well, only apply to 2019 when a lot of videographers start to shoot 4K and more advance users like flat profiles or LOG. None of these are in the Mark II. However, the latest Mark III is a beast!

    I had one and sold it. I loved the camera even with the cheaper lenses it took great photos however I found it very hard / near impossible to photograph a bird in flight. In fact the EVF wouldn't registrar that anything at all was in the sky, just blue. This camera is great for street photography in decent/good light and you will not find a better camera for still/product photography under a couple grand "pixel shift 40MP image". With me not being a "Pro" and also on a budget, I went with Canon, cheaper lenses that are really better and the body's are also cheaper. Mirrorless is awesome but save for the Sony A7III for 3 or so grand if you want a camera that does everything and affordable lenses Canon is still top dog.

      Thanks James for watching! Well, I wouldn't disagree with you as the EM5 II AF just isn't fast or accurate enough for fast moving subjects. Olympus realised it and hence the arrival of EM1 II. The hybrid AF on the pro body is definitely vastly improved and I just love using it for moving subjects a lot (not that I shoot wildlife or flying birds). Yes, it's a great street tool and for me, it's been my travel/family camera. And you are also correct that Canon or in fact any DSLRs which use PDAF still prove to be better in tracking fast pace subjects. And as it's a mature product, any DSLR will be cheaper than the still advancing mirrorless technologies. Sony is definitely leading the AF race in the mirrorless market while Panasonic, Olympus and Fuji all trailing behind and playing catchup. But I do like Olympus EM1's hybrid AF which allows a more reliable tracking when compare to Panasonic and Fuji, in my opinion.

    Jimmy, have you lost a bit of weight? Your face looks thinner.
    The original E-M5 was my first m43 camera, and still a great camera to shoot. I prefer the smaller body size compared with the large grip E-M1 and Panasonic GH cameras. Waiting for the mark III to see which way to go. Mark II prices will come down but the III will offer a lot more. We shall see!

      Cheers mate! I wish that I've lost weight but don't think and I do have intention to lose some hahaha, summer is coming and I don't want to see my belly, not that I have packs anyway. Yes, EM5 Mark 1 or 2 are both great and each update gives us so much more and can't wait to see what Mark 3 has for us!

      Cheers Mario! Yeah many wouldn’t believe me how ‘heavy’ it is if you just look at it and it goes a long way when it comes to feel. I really like it!

      Red35 Photography I want to love my em5 mark ii, but I have some huge issues. One or the worst is I cant seem to nail focus with it. I really wish the face/eye detect worked better. Even putting it on the smallest af point and hammering it over doesn't seem to work. Any tips? Thanks!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's pretty odd Alex, it shouldn't be the case and in fact, in terms of accuracy, I actually think it's the best out of my other cameras EM-1 II and PEN-F. Ok, face/eye doesn't work as well as it could be but point to point is fine (not tracking, EM1 still the best in that department). Well, remember that the is a CDAF so you need high contrast subject for accurate focusing. If the thing you are point it at lacks contrast, it will not be focus properly. Also, any CDAF has the same tendency to 'overshoot' the subject if the focusing square doesn't cover it entirely. Unlike traditional DSLR's PDAF, the cross type will pin point the focusing in the centre of the focusing box so you can accurately pick and shoot. The is one reason why Sony's AF has advance eye and face detect to compensate this. I hope Olympus will improve the face/eye detect in the near future as it will help greatly. So in the mean time, try to focus ton 'edges' of the subject of find something with 'black' lines on it and get the focus to lock :)
