Today is perhaps the final day in the M&P from scratch clear soap series thingy. But recipes are almost the least important part of making; the WHY behind the formulation will help you formulate your own!

Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. I'm really, really kinda hooked on this thing. Sad, though, the everclear cost put the price of my materials about the same as buying premade from WSP with free shipping, or actually more expensive than bulk SFIC from BB.
I used 70/30 coco/stearic, and the rest adhering tob you recipe on one of the others. Like I said in my million comment chain last week, mine ended up honey colored because I used unbleached sugar, but since I was coloring it, it was good. The jelly texture was just because I hadn't cooked it long enough-- smelled like jungle juice until I brought it to 180 ish for half an hour. I'm the initial cook I failed to get it over 150. The lather is still amazing, and I just am so happy to have had you as close as my TH-cams to save my butt on my first wholesale order. I think. We'll see how that all plays out. Politics, I don't do. Ugh.

Yeah Violet purple and blues cancel out yellow in hair my daughter uses purple shampoo that’s costs me 29 dollars a bottle smh I was going to do the same thing so I ordered ultramarine violet I seen a video she used it and it knocked out the yellow and yes I got everclear 😂 I also asked my friend he’s owns a liquor store to see if he can find me a higher clear volka but he said ever clear is the good high one in a couple days I should have my dye I read this book they had a old book and it shows you 6 different ways and the colors they come out to
Hi I cooked lye/oils but it seems quite floury, is it safe to carry on with process? And is temps Fahrenheit or Celsius?
Thanks for explaining about ethanol vs isopropyl alcohol. And that too much liquid will make the texture rubbery.
I'm not a huge fan of isopropyl alcohol because of the price and the smell.

Love your videos! Can you explain how I would come up with my own formula for making melt and pour bases with different butters and oils? I’m not sure what percentages of everything I need to create my own. I haven’t found a lot of info out there on this. Maybe you already have a video on here that I couldn’t find about this. I saw people somewhere (TH-cam? Maybe?) claiming you can make soap with oil and sodium bicarbonate if you’re afraid of sodium hydroxide? I mean I guess it’s the sodium ion that contributes to the formation of the salt molecule so... ? Maybe it’s possible to use the sodium in the bicarb instead? I need to know 😳

In the comments, the people’s are saying you can use sodium carb (not bicarb, i was wrong about that!).
@@katelillo1932 umm... I'm pretty sure that's (sodium carb) is washing soda, aka pot ash aka soda ash. I, too, am intrigued.
In researching, CA seems to have a limit to 151 proof. In search of Everclear, I have only been able to locate 120 proof (it might be out there at 151, but I haven't found it thus far.) The Ethanol online at Simple Solvents is 200 proof, $75.00 for a gallon. Not a big deal but wondering what the difference might be in the gap with final product and which proof you use when using Ethanol? Thanks so much!

I make candles, massage candles, melts, various body balms plus the only way I make my soaps is using MP bases but I add oils, clays and butters that only enhance them.. plus I add some botanicals
What did you mix with the sugar it was 5oz.? I was thinking it is alcohol but then you mixed the alcohol and glycerin

Meth-ies!, as my husband the all-things-wood enthusiast calls it. Essential to his shellac hobby. Neat.
For the purposes of a soap meant to be used on the body, I would steer clear of methylated spirits IE denatured alcohol. Great in cleaning products, but because methanol is absorbed by the skin more easily and with a higher likelihood of toxicity as compared to ethanol, not something I would recommend as a substitute. Would be nice, though; so easy to find!
@@MrsSoapAndClay interesting, in Western Australia all of our methylated spirits do not contain methanol, effective from 1st July 1917.

Did you use 150 or 190 proof ever clear?
I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding the lye to water quantity you used. In soap calc I used the 1.4:1 ratio based on your recipe just for confirmation before creating my own recipe but it does not come back to the amount of water to lye ounces you used. Can you clarify?
Hey! Just double checked my recipe against soapcalc, and with 3.5oz coconut and 1.5oz stearic at 1.4:1, I’m getting 1.25oz water and .85oz lye, which lines up with what I showed in the video. I don’t know what you got, but numbers are lining up over here.

Is perfumers alcohol the same?
That is a great question! And one that I can’t answer across the board, as perfumer’s alcohol is denatured in a number of ways, using dozens of potential ingredients to make it taste bad for human consumption. Always check the data pages before using; anything with methanol I would avoid as it is highly toxic at tiny amounts and absorbs through the skin rather easily. Perfumer’s alcohol that contains bitrex as the agent that makes it taste bad is very good for soap as it’s reasonably harmless.
I've been obsessively watching your "Melt & Pour from Scratch" videos, and with this recipe I was just wondering whether it is harsh on your skin? Because it is Coconut Oil and 0% superfat, does that make it a bit like dish soap? I am going to go watch more of your videos now and will delete or edit this comment if I figure out the answer myself!! :). Thanks for your videos. I make "all the things" too, but haven't made M&P from scratch yet -- I'm excited to do a bunch of soap experiments with M&P from scratch soon!

You should do a recipie for a nice melt and pour for the face!
Also, I made this today and it turned out great. I did a PH test and it came out to 11.35. Isn't that too high? Is there a way to bring down the P.H.?

Propylene glycol is not used in this recipe, so definitely not necessary. As for an alternative to glycerin (which is not the same thing), there are alternative solvents. Have fun!
Please, Can i use methanol in place of ethanol ?
Given the high risk of toxicity, the ease with which the skin absorbs methanol, and the frequent warnings from the FDA regarding soap and sanitizer products containing merely trace amounts of methanol, I would definitely not use methanol in any product that comes in contact with skin.

I’m gonna go with yes, based on this comment.
It flashed across the screen - I found it! 0% superfat, 25% water by oil weight, 1:1.4 lye to water ratio, then 70% Coconut Oil (3.5 oz in this batch she makes) and 30% Stearic Acid (1.5 oz in her batch here). Then she lists the amounts of solvents -- 10 oz Sugar, 10 oz Glycerin, and 5 oz Alcohol, so they are in that 2:2:1 ratio. I hope that helps! :)
