I have the soundtrack on CD. I still listen to it regularly. It is perfect. It brings the mood to the movie like no other that I have seen or heard. Not even the Lord of the Rings did this as well as Conan. Long live Conan of Cimmeria!!

No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That’s what’s important!”

Name 3 song titles from the Lord of the Rings. And there are a lot of people that would make the argument this was the best Score of All Films, or at the very least is in the conversation.

The late 70's and 80's in my humble opinion the Golden Age of Fantasy in movies, gaming and art. Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, Dragon Slayer, Wizards, Legend, etc. Dungeons and Dragons and all the spin off genres in gaming from that, to the art of Frazetta, Vallejo, Elmor, Easley and Caldwell.
I am SO happy to have had my elementary, middle and high school years during these times. Class of 89' so just perfect to have absorbed it all. Sorry to say with exception of maybe Jackson's LotR and Game of Thrones nothing comes close to those two decades for sheer volume of all things fantasy that came out.

Being a very young child through the 80's (slept over Masters of the Universe at the drive-in...), nonetheless I was still moved by the influence such works have had in my creative drive. A time when story and proper Special FX had sway over the CGI overuse and vacuous titillation of nowadays.
(disclaimer: I like them T 'n A's fine enuff, thank you very much; just try to make sense when you include them, instead of catering to the sweaty virgin demographic...)

The orgy music is one of the greatest composition ever done for a movie.
The music is not only beautiful, it sounds also very original for a movie telling a story a long long long time ago. Even before Roman Empire. This music sounds like a peplum music but we are a SO far from this period, it gives to the cult an identity ahead of its time. It's like a decadent atmosphere. A decadent of a young civilisation at the beginning of human time.
And this music gives an atmosphere so sophisticated to the area that Conan, Valeria and Subotaï seems like PERFECT STRANGER to this universe. The music sounds like a peplum orgy, and the wild barbarian seems totaly out of this ambiance... and that's the objective.
It's so different than the compositions of today which are just telling us EXACTLY what we are looking at on screen. The music of today composition just gives 1 dimension of the scene where it's played.
When you listen to Zimmer for exemple or Williams, the music is linked to a specific character or to a very particular scene. Imperial March (an extraordinary composition) just gives a majesty and evilness to Darth Vader and his imperial faction.
The orgy music succeed in telling many different things AT THE SAME TIME.
It tells something about Thulsa's culture.
It tells something about the decadence of it.
It tells something about how stranger Conan is to this place.
And the music do not sounds as a classical evil theme for the antagonist faction (where we are actually). No, it's a beautiful, pleasant and entertaining music.

Unfortunately the next Conan Film, might be called "Conan The Remembered". As usual the problem is the person, or people who bought the copyrights from the creator of the subject ( The Howard estate), don't know what their doing, so it takes them 20 some odd years till someone speaks to them in A language they can undetstand 💰? Or they figure it out on their own, hopefully before Arnold's in A Nursing Home.
Supposedly it is still trying to be done, with Arnold, and with A working title of "King Conan".

i'm ok with that. the only thing is that its hard to repeat a masterpiece.
like conan the destroyer was an ok movie....nothing like barbarian. but its to be expected because to make a sequel as good as the original is hard to do.
2 things that should be the focus in the next and final conan is that 1-arnold looks like the way he does at the end of barbarian, ie, he has grey hair and that grey beard. 2-that they make the imagery/cinematics with memorable shots. lastly poledouris's music stays.

We don't need to repeat anything - we'll make a new masterpiece! ;)
Look, Clint was an action hero too and when he got old - he remade himself into a new type of hero: old and old-fashioned but not outdated! Today Arnold doesn't need to jump and run like a young one: his charisma + good script + clever director (Paul, please, please!!) = high level blockbuster. He'll be back!

The music you use is so important in so many ways,
I watched "The Untouchables" the other week, and the soundtrack wasn't bad, until they started mixing in electronic drums, nevermind when your doing A contemporary film, and you use A contemporary soundtrack your dating that movie forever, but when using contemporary music, and contemporary instuments, in A period piece, it just makes it silly, along with other derogotive expressions. It can so much as RUIN A good Film.
