  • Join us for our last few days on the road. We started 6 days earlier on Oregon backcountry Discovery route number 4 and our final destination was Owyhee Lake in far eastern Oregon.
Awesome overland travel and epic views notwithstanding we still had our share of disappointments and failures. Come along for the ride and enjoy some spectacular areas that hopefully someday you too will get to visit.
If you just can't get there, then come along vicariously through us! You're always welcome to watch.

Yeah Snively Hot springs is a beautiful spot for a swim. Certainly all the people that were there thought so 😆
We should have stayed at the ranch for some more fishing, kayaking and swimming, I know you'd have been in the water there! Cheers!

You really add-lived the trip from the top of Leslie gulch down the canyon to the Owhyee reservoir. It’s down hill the entire way. Your video led me to believe we went down hill, up hill multiple times which is not accurate. We went by the only cabin in the canyon, 3 times getting to the reservoir. This is beautiful country, I just ask you portray it accurately.

You have a good eye! Spotting editing errors is not easy when you are not the one who spent 10 to 15 hours editing together a 30 minute video with video clips from three or four different cameras.😆
We noticed the cabin too and it makes a good photographic and video subject and we couldn't resist catching a glimpse of it on our way back up the hill after we left the next morning so that might explain some of the uphill video that you noticed.
Anyway thanks for watching and noticing and please check out some of our other videos I am getting better at video editing with every new video that I post! Cheers!

I’m surprised that you didn’t find any water in the reservoir. I was there in August. The reservoir wasn’t full but it had a lot of water in it. I agree the area needs to be at least a National Monument. The campground was in need of repair and the restrooms repaired and cleaned out. I have a slideshow of my own trip here on TH-cam. I hope you can find it.

Were you there just this past august? A lot of the reservoirs were restored this past year.
I'll give it my best shot. I'd love to see you another perspective. IM me a link?
It's kind of cool that it was a Saturday in the middle of September with beautiful weather and no one was there. I don't mind if the word doesn't get out 😆 Thanks for watching!

WOW! That shot at 3:22 is wild!
Gaia has also screwed me over with gates before too and what's worse is there is no way to report the gates back to Gaia so the next people are going to have the same problem. That said, most gates are bullshit and have no right being there.
Man I need to get out there. Leslie Gulch looks amazing.
15:33 Man, not much shade in that campground! Or campers for that matter!
So it sounds like spring might be the best time to visit? That way you'd get the water and less smoke, yeah?
25:25 GET AWAY FROM THE CLIFF!!! :)
30:29 Tacoma would do it...just saying :) Does look pretty steep though!
41:30 Hey! You finally found a lake!
    That tunnel was neat!
Great video Ted and Mo! Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing it!

Yeah the Gaia GPS thing I'll explain in another video. It's as much about the user's assumptions as it is about the apps minor flaw.
Certainly springtime over there would be magnificent. We were there late in the year and as you saw in the other videos most reservoirs and even rivers were dried up. I'm not sure it would make much difference there at the end of Leslie gulch. It would take many years to refill that reservoir till the water backed up to the campground.
It does leave an interesting route back to Birch Creek along the river as the road that runs along there is going to be mostly exposed with a few water crossings necessary, but we will take that route someday. There's a hot spring about 3 mi south of the Slocum campground along the river. Be an interesting stop.
      Cheers! See you in May!

I wouldn't call it a flaw but a weakness in the data that people should know about. You can get Gaia to show you private lands but it doesn't know which ones owners let you cross and which ones don't. There is no public record of locked gates so there isn't much Gaia can do about it. It would need to be a user driven feature of reporting such things, which would be great! But my experience of Overlanders (on TH-cam at least) is they don't ever tell you where they are, so getting them to report locked gates seems like a stretch.

We were there exactly one year ago this week. The nice thing is that most kids are in school and vacations are over and since the nearest large center is Boise, I don't think it gets much traffic this time of year. It's a pretty remote area and you can expect low water levels this time of year also. Thanks for watching!

    • @blackpearlvoyager4174
      @blackpearlvoyager4174  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Here's the route. Reverse if you coming from Leslie Gulch to the north.
From snively hot springs along Owyhee lake road just go north until you get to the town of Owyhee or you can make a right hand turn on Overstreet Rd and get out to highway 201. Head south on 201 till you get to Succor Creek road and go south through Succor Creek Canyon and up the other side till you'll see the signs for Leslie Gulch. It's an incredible drive through Succor Creek canyon! Thanks for watching and have fun!

The real issue isn't Gaia, it's where Gaia gets its data from. They get it from The Land management agencies and county road departments who then give the data to USGS. If the data they are getting is not accurate they cant correct it. The Land Management Agencies (BLM), and Malheur County is lacking up to date travel data on this land. I have been having conversations for years in this county about this issue and the need for a updated travel management plan.

Thank you for your thoughtful insight. I know I and others will appreciate your thoughts.
My problem with Gaia is you only have two choices when picking routes and that is "driving" or "hiking". Driving always takes you cross country along the best maintained and paved routes. Hiking is usually the shortest route and overland but "you never know what you're going to get" Even if you analyze every inch and know where the private properties are. Still a toss-up whether or not you'll make it through. I don't really think there's any way to fix that, but it would be nice if you run across a locked gate that you could add that little detail to Gaia for the next person.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

Best that Leslie Gulch not be a national park. If it were it would become another overrun industrial tourism site. Plus NPS spends your tax dollars like a drunk sailor. As it is now all it requires is some road maintenance. If the NPS ran it there would be a visitor center, lots of rangers including law enforcement rangers, and housing for all these parasites.
