Mid-covid three friends and I bought ND1s (somehow all in white) so we could all run together at track days in our own Idiot Spec series. We're still convinced it's our best idea yet. Consumables are cheap, fun is immense, and nothing beats getting a point-by from a car with 3x the power (and hoping they lift so you can actually pass)
Forza IRL! This is an awesome idea, I know a few people who did the same here in Detroit, can't think of a better way to have fun with friends on track.
I've got a stock ND1 that I got for a screaming deal when covid kicked off. Hands down the best $ I've ever spend on a car. Spent all of Rona "isolating" driving in the rockies.
I did it! I bought a fun car because of Topher. I bought a '23 ND2 Club soft-top after watching nearly all of Topher's library. I put an exhaust on it already and it really is the funnest car I've been in. I've been in fast Maseratis and Teslas and I'm already convinced this is my favorite car ever. Ordering Xidas next week! Love this thing. (My cousin and a friend are now in the market for an ND1/ND2 after driving mine!)

My lunches are always enriched when The Topher uploads a Miata video. Love these little cars. The fact that such a cheaply available machine can wow so many people and cause as much joy as Porsches costing 6x as much says a lot about why so many are around after 3 decades. No hate towards porsche btw, they're incredible machines, I just cannot afford them 🤣
Love that little bark up to 2k RPM on startup. Just such a fun, happy, energetic little car. Really interested in the Öhlins coilovers, they're available for the NA as well. Love these vids from the California trip, it's like being a kid in a candy shop!
I kinda wish I could disable it. Or I wish that it only did it when starting it when it was already at operating temperature. I have a mild exhaust on mine (Borla), and that RIP up to 2K on cold mornings can be a bit much at 6AM. I also don't love it when it's ice cold outside since all the oil is cold and down in the sump.
@@opmike343 As for the cold start, try starting it in reverse. It'll start in quiet mode, at least the ones here in Germany do. Then you can wait sitting in reverse for around 30 seconds (the normal time until the revs drop) and you're fine to go. It'll start being loud if you put it in neutral and won't go back to quiet mode from that point. I've got a Fox catback exhaust system on mine and as you say, it can be a bit much at times but I generally enjoy it!
I have an nd2 with a goodwin racing superstreet exhaust. Ive done 90k miles in an nd1 and 2 combined. Best car ive ever owned. Its so cheap to maintain, gets crazy good gas mileage even when you get on it. It’s so comfortable in colorado climate top down all the time.
Makes me miss my ND. The handling and throttle response were unmatched. So predictable and fun. Daily drove mine from 2016 to 2022. Rain, snow, sun didn’t matter.
These engines actually make pretty decent gains with a tune for an NA engine. Maybe the high end potential isn't there but if you just do the basic bolt ons it's pretty solid.
@@tealchief that's pretty substantial. I've been considering an nc2/3 and an nd1 since prices overlap. I actually like the nc facelifts though slightly heavier but other than that the nc2/3 and nd2 are similar

Looks like great fun, what road were you driving on in California? Do you think the ND2 is the better choice with the increased Redline? Love that Goodwin race exhaust sound.
Dang, this makes me miss my ND! I'll be taking it out of storage soon. I have the same tune on mine and the SakeBomb/MiataSpeed Ohlins with 6k/3k springs and a slightly less aggressive alignment. I think I prefer the GWR Race axle back more than my Moss Cobalt AB setup. @TheTopher, how was it driving in the corners with the FM front anti-roll bar compared to a stock ND? I know that's hard to say since it has different offset/width wheels, taller tires, plus the Ohlins, but I was just curious of your impressions. That's definitely on my list, I just don't know whether I want to go with the 3 piece Karcepts ARB or go with a one piece ARB.
Hey, I know your comment is old but I'm thinking of doing an E85 tune on my ND1. I have a couple questions. First, is the power bump with E85 really noticeable or would a 93 tune be just as good? Second, for E85 do I just need to get better injectors or do I also need to upgrade other fuel system parts? What injectors would I need for E85?
@@DaveSimkus the Fab9 93 tune definitely wakes up the engine even with just that and no other bolt ons. But yes, with the E85, it has even slightly higher midrange torque and above 6000 pulls harder than on 93. With cooler combustion and higher octane ratings compared to 93 octane, tuners can advance the timing. Check out Fab9. Bryan can get busy, but he is one of the big go to’s. And no, no extra hardware required for the ND1’s. The stock injectors are fine with E85 when keeping it naturally aspirated. ND2’s require upgraded injectors when running E85.
I’m about to sell mine because of the steering. I tried maxing out caster, different tires, and still too light and no feel. It’s a shame because the rest of the car is amazing but it’s honestly a big Achilles heel of the car for me. The most frustrating part is it sounds like it mainly comes down to software tuning which would be an easy fix but there’s literally nothing you can do about it. Not sure whether to go with an NC or something else.
I think it's more that some don't like how light it is. Topher said he thinks the Fiat 124 has good steering feel with the only difference being software. You can feel bumps through it and it does get better on track, and everything else is felt through the seat/chassis so it's nbd. Plus stickier tires or a smaller diameter steering wheel stiffen the steering up.
Kumho makes some very good summer tires nowadays - look at the V730s as an example. Anyways, I literally just went through a set of Michelin PS4S before I got this set of kumhos for free from a friend that works at an automotive manufacturer so I couldn't say no. And having tracked on both sets of tires at the same track, I was actually faster on these by 5 seconds than on my PS4S between events at Buttonwillow lol
@@gravity45b Well my only response is "Sheesh" again lol. My experience with Khumo's is down to their all seasons which are.. less than stellar. I know their track tires are famous though!
