Should You Buy a 2.7l Silverado or F-150?

  • I’ve been asked for my thoughts on the GM 2.7l vs the Ford F-150 2.7l. Some basic differences are that the Ford is a V6 while the GM is an inline 4. The Ford has twin turbos and the GM has a single. Otherwise they are both very comparable and either will serve you well.
Let’s all be kind to each other. We are all in this thing called life together. Please keep your comments helpful and respectful.

I have owned both 2.7 f150 and 2.7 silverado. The ford was great, the silverado was in the shop non stop for mechanical issues, burning oil, pumping exhaust into the cab, burning antifreeze... I finally gave up on it after a year of ownership and 28,000km's. I really wanted to like it and keep it for a decade, but i just didn't have the time to be constantly taking it to the dealer.

Back in 2017, I went to the Ford dealer to buy a new pickup with a V8. The salesman showed me one with the 2.7L V6. I was skeptical so he took me on a ride and had me drive part the way. I was amazed. I still own it and have had no problems to date now in 2023. I'd say that's an indication of reliability. Not sure of the GM's but the Fords work great.

I have a 2020 Silverado Custom 2.7. I was very leery. Now I think it’s just fine. The tow on my 4x4 crew cab is 6700#. I tow a 21 foot boat no problem. The 2.7 was built like a diesel and it’s under square so it should last. The 8 speed is just fine. I remember thinking 4 speed autos were so cool. I get 22 mpg average, in towing it really like it’s fuel. It goes down to 13. And as far as the sound, it’s a quiet truck, you don’t here it.

It would be nice to have the larger tank. That is a good point. I can go about 200 miles before I am really hunting a gas station. I’m the SE where I live it’s not hard to find fuel but I could see it getting a little close on some of those long western stretches of roads. Had my 2018 F150 for five years. Mileage empty for the 2.7 Eco was great, but fell off even just towing a fishing boat. Bought it for the mileage as we went 300 miles up north to a camp where we had a seasonal lot. Bi-weekly trips in the summer put lots of miles on. Only towed the boat in spring and fall.

Thanks for your comment! One thing I learned early about these turbo motors is that you can either have Eco or you can have Boost. But not both at the same time. My wife’s little 2.0 ecoboost is the same way. When we drive it economically it can bring back great MPG. SPIRITED driving drinks the fuel. Same for my truck. Except when towing it’s like 50% or less of my empty MPG. I appreciate you watching.

In equal displacement engines like the 2.7 V6 and 2.7 Inline 4, the 4 cylinder will naturally make its peak torque at lower RPM than the 6. This is because the 4 cylinder's larger piston will have a faster torque rise than the smaller V6 piston.
The easiest way to demonstrate this is with a 200 CID engine example, one a 4 cyl and the other a V8. The 4 cyl's 50 CID piston will have a faster torque rise than the two 25 CID pistons firing 90 degrees apart on the V8, allowing the 4 cyl torque to peak at lower RPM.
Theoretically if both V8 and 4 cylinder have the same volumetric efficiency, both will make the exact same peak torque and peak HP, but the 4 cylinder will be at about 38% lower RPM than the V8, due to the V8's 2 smaller pistons having to fire 90 degrees apart to equal one 4 cylinder piston, meaning the V8 cannot mathematically make the same torque and HP at the same low RPM of the 4 cylinder.
However, in the real world the 4 cylinder will likely make more torque and power than an equal displacement V8 because an inline 4 has a simpler more efficient valve train, has fewer moving parts and less internal friction, plus the inline, crossflow head design can easily have greater volumetric efficiency, and inline engine cooling is much more efficient than on a V-bank engine.
The V6 will be less below the 4 cylinder than the V8, but will still require higher RPM for the same peak torque and HP as the 4, because of the 6's smaller pistons.

these modern turbos in ford and gm have no turbo lag. if the gm reaches peak torque at 1500 there is no lag. My work truck is a ford 3.5 eco and it has no lag. They run great, they accelerate like a v8 twice their size. I bought the Silverado, I am happy with it. will it last, hope so. My 3.5 eco has had quite a bit of work done to it at 207000 miles, but never a head off and never the bottom end. just the usual cam phaser, exhaust manifolds, throttle body, it runs good, does not use oil, makes good power is quiet. I bought the silverado in May because they came off MSRP by 10k. FYI crew cab 4x4, custom, very pretty truck for 42k. OTD 46k. Taxes are a killer. from San Diego to Tuscon 2 times at 80 mph and got 18.5, pretty bad had wind going home. God Bless -7/29/23

Also one unavoidable fact when comparing the 2.7 V6 to the 2.7 inline 4. The bottom end of the 2.7 4-cylinder is 1/2 of a 5.4 V8, so the 4 has the same stout bottom end, crankshaft and 5 main bearings of the V8. The 2.7 L V6 on the other end has a 1.35L 3-cylinder bottom end, with 4 main bearings. I'm far more confident about the ability of the 4 cylinder to handle 400+ ft lbs of torque long term without problems than I am that mechanically weaker 2.7 L V6.

Why need God's name GM not use the 4.3L (262 CID) in the PRO 1500 SWB and LWB trucks. I purchased a 1986 C-10 (1500) LWB with the 4.3L (262 CID) with the only option, a 35-gallon aux tank. I was able to drive 1,100 HWY miles between fillups. I've been watching TH-cam/reading posts of mechanics stating reoccurring problems with GM's power plants 2.7L (165 CID), 5.3L (323 CID), and 6.2L (403 CID). There are only two solid GM engines, the 4.3L (262 CID) and 6.6L (403 CID). My first used truck was a 1963 I6 270 CID (4.4L) with a 4-speed stick shift LWB that I bought from the original order in 1982. Additionally, I owned a 1988 Chevy S-10 2.5L (153 CID) 2WD SWB. So, until GM gets their act together, I'm GMC SIERRA 2500 HD CAB) 6.6L (403 CID) SLE 2WD LWB or Savana 3500 Extended Passenger Van 6.6L (403 CID). The main reasons are the 6.6L (403 CID) is old-school tech, meaning no auto start-stop; dynamic cylinder deactivation; and either can tow 10,000 lbs trailers. The Savana has a slight edge over the Sierra carry family members and two Large DOG crates. As a Senior, I require a vehicle with safety features to assist me in driving on blacktop roads in Georgia.

The tow sticker is on the full size trucks. I got a 2023 canyon, same thing, no towing sticker for weight.
I the towing of the 2022 depends on the engine and trim. Owner’s manual or dealer should be able to look it up for you. I am sure Chevy has it on there website as well.

@jakegroenig5820 mine is 7000 lbs, my manual says it, I have the tow package, but tow rating stickers should be on all vehicles with a tow package, thank you for getting back to me

Ford refused to do the honorable thing back in the late 80s and properly paint my 1 year old truck that had never seen an auto car wash or a pressure washer. They had tried some new primerless paint process and the paint was coming off all over the place.
I told them I was going to boycott them for life if they didn't do the obvious honorable (and legal contractual) thing and they refused so that's what I've done for the last 34 years.
Found On Road Devoid of paint..

@@user-3tf67bk46u we had a 2012 explorer iron man, v8, the main computer went, they knew about this issue for this certain computer, I called asking for help, they wouldn't even split the cost or help us find a place to get it worked on, we traded for a 2015 f 150, it had transmission issues from day 1, traded it 6 months later for my 2016 Silverado z71 off road, traded it for my 2022 Colorado redline edition last June, chevy for me, no more ford's

I too decided to boycott an Auto maker for sorry business practices. Having the Government bailout GM made sure I'd never buy from them. They took our money and gave us no product at all to drive, devoid of paint or not.
