Yeah that other video was one of my earlier Videos before I got more experience with how to manage the audio tracks and once in a while you're forget a setting to and get it wrong and don't notice until it's Uploaded
Hands down BEST, clearest description of this, and the ONLY video I’ve found that includes which washers to buy, and which way they should face! Similar videos assume we already know this. (I didn’t!). Thank you so much!!
Thank you for the clear (ha, ha) explanation. One other thing to know - the two parts of the p-trap should be from the same manufacturer. I cut the wall tube from my p-trap set too short so I went to the nearest store to pick up an new wall tube. I could not stop the slow leak that was happening at the junction no matter what adjustments I made. Finally it dawned on me that the lip on the wall tube may not sit right on the j bend. Sure enough, when I looked closely I could see the lip was shaped slightly different from the wall tube that came with the set. Used a new set and presto, the leak was gone. So much time spent trying to fix something that had a simple solution.
Good catch. Also a lot of people forget that when you slide that p-trap arm into the wall pipe, and tighten the nut, they forget to put the green gasket in there, and they get a slow leak.
Thanks for this video - saved me a trip to HD and had the disposal reassemble done in 5 (after three prior attempts). On my set I disassembled the entire P trap, and tightened the joint with no seal first. Then connected the rest. Worked a treat.
Thanks very much for this info! My P-trap had come loose and I was confused on how to re-attach properly. Saved me what would've prolly been an expensive and unnecessary call to the plumber. 🙏🏾
Thanks Jeff! I had waaaay too much pipe above the p-trap installed for some reason (previous owner) and kept being problematic. Now makes perfect sense and wasn't to code at all. Took out the extra pipe and now the p-trap goes directly from the garbage disposal straight to the arm. Perfect! Thanks again and this version is much better without the background music.
You did a great job in this video! So clear and specific. I didn’t have the p trap exactly lined up like u said so mine was leaking. Also,, thanks for indicating which way the washer should face. A little detail but very important!
Jeff, i don't remember seeing a clear P-trap kit at the Depot. My whole life i've always wanted a clear P-trap. There has been a couple times i had to go back to projects to address seepage from the connector nut. and btw, thanks for no music.
In the first minute, you answered a question for me related to a different repair: I now know the correct size of the slip joint nut that I need. Thanks Jeff!
Thanks for this. I'd been continually frustrated by these. One note of caution for others: They way it was presented I misinterpreted the final wrench tightening as "optional". I figured I'm a strong guy, I'll hand tighten it real good, and be done. But I tested, and it leaked :( . I was ready to disassemble the whole thing and start over making sure that the two elbows lined up PERFECTLY. Then I figured, hey, let met wrench it a bit and see what happens. So I tightened it up a half turn with a wrench, an VIOLA! No leaks!!!

I think I have a p-trap leak. The floor of the kitchen cabinet is wet, dipped and moldy. I never knew water stayed in the pipe like that. I've been running the water looking for leaks, now this makes sense. I really like those transparent pipes. Thank you!
Don't buy the transparent pipes, they crack and leak weeks later, we are doing testing on them now to determine why, but those ABS plastic transparent pipes are more brittle.
Best video to fix a p trap I kept on using the wrench and it only made the problem worse. Watched this video lined up the p trap hand tightened it and done. No leaks thanks 🙏🏿 so much

Worked for me! Didn't realize how fussy the line up requirement was. Took 3 times to get it right. The final one that worked didn't even need any wrench tightening and the second try failed even after wrench tightening. There has got to be a better design.

Excellent advice to align the pipes properly and also have a tool for arthritic hands. I like the way you waited overnight to check for a leak at that tricky joint. PS I did just 2 overnight tests - the 2nd one looked dry for a while the night before -but to my dismay in the morning a tiny bit of water had leaked. Maybe my hands are not strong enough to tighten. I just tested the U-tube connection before putting the sink back as it is much easier to see if things work first. Thank you - I'll have another try!

Thanks!!! Checking tomorrow to see if my bathroom faucet I installed today leaks there! It gave me trouble trying to figure out why it wasn't seating properly, then noticed the shape of the end of trap. :/ I spent few hours with you today! Lol
Actually, I noticed the PVC pipe that fits/slips up to the sink drain pipe, isn't a tight seal. There is a small space between the two. Could I possibly have 1/1-2 PVC and the sink drain is 1-1/4? It fit the old one fine.
I've always had trouble with this fitting. My trap had a hole in it, so I bought a new one. When I took the old one off, I notice there was not a gasket there. I put the new trap on, but it leaked. So, I thought the gasket had to go in there, but then I could not make the connection as the threads on fitting would not start. I learned from your video there is no gasket there. I just went in and put it together more carefully, and it worked. Tomorrow morning, I need to call and cancel the plumber. If I could give you 5 thumbs up, I would. THANKS!

Well, the house has been around since 1973 so there you are!

in my region it's standard to use ABS on residential drains and when I see the white stuff it looks so flimsy ... anyway, I liked the see through trap and the talk about the size of the water column that fills the bend ... makes you want to use the Charlotte glue in traps. Thanks Jeff !
FYI Oatey makes a "Heavy Duty" P-Trap which I got at Home Depot that has a rubber washer instead of the angled piece of plastic. I went from spending hours trying to line that joint up properly to getting it on the first try with the Oatey Heavy Duty P-Trap.
This was the best video I've seen by far. Very informative Jeff. What size p trap do I need for a bathroom sink? The 1.5 is too big for my drain pipe and now I'm just frustrated😖 Thx for your help
Hi Jeff. I listened to your video until you reached the part about the rubber gasket. That was what I needed to know. It took me only a couple of minutes to put it back together, because there were no cracks. The other day, I opened the cabinet under the sink, and I had a mini lake under there. The P-trap you have doesn't have a rubber gasket ...mine does, and for some reason the nut and rubber gasket fell off. Literally. My landlady's guy, fixed a leak under my sink about a years ago. What I am wondering is, when my portable washer drains into the sink, if (over time) the pressure dislodged the nut and rubber gasket. Because they fell off, I wasn't sure which way the gasket was supposed to go. I will watch the P-trap in future. In future, I think I am going to drain the washer water into the left sink instead of the right (right one is directly above the P-trap). i will see if that might help. I do not have a plumbers wrench, so I tightened it by hand. Not to worry, I used to open all the jars for my husband. Thank you so much for your informative video, and the info about the gases. Good information. Oh, and I agree with that one guy ...no music is much better. Cheers, Sharon
Most plumbing codes don't allow double trapping we use a continuous waste. Also you mentioned in a earlier post to snug the nuts with a channel locks. That's good, with hot water going down the drain the pipes expand and contract and you'll have a leak later.
Bob, you might be confusing double trapping with the real case, of not putting one trap one after another in serial fashion. This sink works perfectly, both sinks drained at the same time, no issues.
I have had 2 plumbers out to fix the leaky plumbing under my kitchen sink, money wasted. They were both licensed and highly recommended but soon after it falls apart again. What is so freaking hard about this??? Now I am undertaking it myself, I just wish I could pay myself! lol
I have seen plumbers make this connection and walk away thinking it's working but fails the next day, because even many licensed plumbers don't know the trick to success here is to tighten the weir nut first, then all other come later, but the p--trap and p-trap arm pipes MUST be satisfied first, then all other connections can be tightened down. Keep in mind you may have hired a licensed plumbing company, but they often send their lower rung employees, journeymen, or whatever else. I would ask for the person who owns the license to show up.
Great video. Question: if the lower, gassy side of my new p trap is generating a very occasional slight leak (brand new, one hour ago), will it "set" if I let it rest and self-adjust over the next couple of days? Thanks again !
@@jeffostroff Thank you very very much for taking the time to reply! It is holding up better so far, but the problem is the Trap Arm is very very close to the Weir curved piece. I might have to shorten the drain stubout in order to lengthen that arm, just a bit. That should help resolve it. Thanks again!
I like your video and I have a question. I really know nothing of plumbing. I replaced a bathroom vanity and my old pvc p-trap did not quite line up. On advice of a plumber who was here for another job, I cut that pvc p trap off my 1.5" pvc waste line and glued on a tubular-to-pvc (plumber called it tubular system) or polypropylene-to-pvc adapter. This adapter itself has an integral outside plastic collar or wingnut without the wings that when tightened compresses a conical ring of plastic inside around the trap arm. I have a bare trap arm with no gasket or anything on it going into this adapter. Your connection to waste is different with a collar/wingnut on the trap arm and the conical gasket and threads on the waste. Am I correct that I would not need some type of gasket at my trap arm to the different-than-your waste adapter connection? The conical ring of plastic in my adapter sorta is the gasket? I don't think there would be anywhere for one or anything to hold it in place. I have not had any leaks or seeps that I've seen back there. Your video did help me with the trap to trap arm leak and I thank you lots for that info!
Everyone gets this wrong and forgets to install that washer on the wall side. IT must be there to gasket against the poly tube. Also, I have another video on this P-Trap Installation Drain Doesn’t Line Up Bathroom Sink Pipe th-cam.com/video/b_OSgwpteR4/w-d-xo.html
Thank you..great video.. I ordered the clear p-trap and also the p-trap ( for the bathroom sink) with the wheel in it to clean out debris. Toothpaste and hair are a killer combination...lol..yuck and always taking the p trap apart to clean out and get grossed out..... I guess I could check..never seen a rubber gasket for the outlet pipe..always plastic. maybe you could post where to get them. Thanks Jeff!! Be Safe...wear your mask... :)
Carolina, we no longer recommend transparent traps, because we are now finding the ABS plastic in them cracks and causes leaks. We are not doing temp cycling tests to see if we can duplicate failures, but the clear ABS plastic is more brittle than white poly plastic. also I I don't like the idea of the P-trap with the brush wheel in it, because it violates plumbing codes, which say that the P-trap must be self-scouring, and no moving parts. Just watch them both carefully.
@@jeffostroff Its already in..will watch it. Its cracking from what..too tight on cranking down on the collars... Will watch it.. cracks usually show up...how soon after install? I love your channel
@@carolinanumber1830 1P trap showed up 3 months after we installed it, and we replaced it with a second clear P trap, and it cracked in 2 weeks. I've had other clear P traps that lasted the entire time I was in the unit and then sold the unit so did not get to see past 6 months
Hi Jeff, great video and instructions. I am trying to attempt this for the first time in my condo apartment. Is the process any different for a condo apartment ?
Great video as always! I've replaced a new trap kit, tightened the compress nut, taped Teflon on the thread ends, and used a rubber washer instead. None of my efforts is working. It's still leaking at the connection joint between the trap arm/outlet tube and wall drain adapter after the water was turned off (No leak when it's on). The leak is very slow, just a few drops of water. What could it possibly go wrong? How should I fix it? Thank you.
Look for cracks where the connection nut meets the p-rep arm going into the wall pipe, make sure you only hand tightened, try doing it without tools. Also be sure you try my most important tip here it is crucial that when you're tightening all of the nuts on the P trap, that you tighten that nut first where the water column will sit and you have to make sure it is perfectly fitted together so that one angled end of the pipe that looks like a V shape should fit down into the volcano shape on the other piece and it should be straight it should not be crooked or tilted in any angles or anything
@@jeffostroff I followed your P-trap installation to a tee. There are no cracks/chips on the connection nut to the wall pipe or the trap arm. The dripping at this joint (NOT at the P-trap connection), which is unusual, only appears a few seconds later after I turned off the water. What I couldn't comprehend is that no leak occurs while the water is running. Thank you for your help.
Couldn't figure out why my P Trap was leaking at work after we had a water bottle fill station added next to the sink. After taking it apart I see the "plumber" used a straight piece of PVC with a vinyl gasket into the tail end of the trap to get the necessary length to tie in the bottle filler drain.... Had to damn near redo the entire drain to get everything watertight. Gotta love some of these contractors..
Hi Jeff. I have a ABS P-Trap that leaks right at the joint after the trap. When I removed this piece, there was a cream colored material wrapped around the curved part, below the exit threads. The trap was NOT leaking before I took it apart. I made the mistake of removing this material and when I put it back together, it has a slow drip. Nobody @ Ace or Home Depot was able to help me and since it is ABS pipe, I cannot used plumbers putty. Do you have a suggestion to stop this leak? Thanks, Ben Wight Davis, CA
Leaks after a day and drops after a 24 hours I hate these pipes. You explain them really well good job they don't leak the way you have showed it BUT BUT, , BUT THE PIPES THEMSELVES ARE A PISSER and after 24 hours drip again and drop..

You bet! Isn't the ABS the same thickness as SCH 40? I never really understood why we ended up with different pipes than California.
perfect for what we needed it for
Great video. Everything was explained perfectly. Thanks for posting it!
Thanks for new video without music
Welcome 😊
FYI Oatey makes a "Heavy Duty" P-Trap which I got at Home Depot that has a rubber washer instead of the angled piece of plastic. I went from spending hours trying to line that joint up properly to getting it on the first try with the Oatey Heavy Duty P-Trap.
Well done video. 👍🏻
This was the best video I've seen by far. Very informative Jeff.
What size p trap do I need for a bathroom sink? The 1.5 is too big for my drain pipe and now I'm just frustrated😖 Thx for your help
He said bathroom sinks need a 1.25 (1 and 1/4") at the beginning.
Thanks for the advice 👍
Any time Aaron!
Thank you for this very informative video ! Excellent 👍👍
glad to help!
Thanks, we use better production techniques and 4k video now.
Thanks great video
Great video, thank you for this!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Good to revisit this video again
Thanks for watching again
Great explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
I love how u pointed to exactly where mines leaking lol
very common source of the leak
Good job citizen!
Thanks John!
Thank you very much!
Mine leaks too! I was amazed that this didn’t have a gasket, just a contact seal.
Yes I never liked this design
Great video. Question: if the lower, gassy side of my new p trap is generating a very occasional slight leak (brand new, one hour ago), will it "set" if I let it rest and self-adjust over the next couple of days? Thanks again !
No, if you have a leak that means it was not set correctly, and make sure you don't over tighten it.
Jeff, great video. Do you ever use teflon tape on the threads?
No because there is a gasket there, no need for teflon tape
my bathroom is 1.5 so it really varies. I went by your video and was surprised that my 1 1/4 kits didn't fit on the bathroom
Good video and excellent info
Glad you liked it
Thank you❤️
You’re welcome 😊
@@jeffostroff ok..thanks
Hi Jeff, great video and instructions. I am trying to attempt this for the first time in my condo apartment. Is the process any different for a condo apartment ?
No the process should be the same no matter where you are.
Thank you!
Thanks Bro...
Gotta love some of these contractors..
glad you solved it
Do you need any putty or sealant for the connections?
Thanks,
Ben Wight

Leaks after a day and drops after a 24 hours I hate these pipes. You explain them really well good job they don't leak the way you have showed it BUT BUT, , BUT THE PIPES THEMSELVES ARE A PISSER and after 24 hours drip again and drop..
