I always have to deal with these things, I am not a plumber just a home owner, but why do they suck so much! It’s 2020 can we not design a trap that doesn’t leak and isn’t finicky that every time your mother-in-law puts the dish soap back and bumps it, it will not leak?

After a sink block, while trying to unscrew the butted outlet of the P-trap and stripping every plastic ridge on the nut (possibly internal cracking 🙄from the vice I used because my wrenches & channellocks werent handling), I recalled that my plumber did something peculiar; he welded the the outlet end of the PVC P-Trap, where it connects to the tailpipe, and a flexigasket from the tailpipe to the wall. 🤠🔥👏 After unscrewing the inlet side of the P-trap by hand, I was able to completely detach all other pipe connections without a single tool. The whole thing is held together with tension... well fitted copper pipes with plenty of tight sleeve overlap, and easy-twist/tool-less brass fittings. The tailpipe connects to the house wall with flexible gasket, as it does to the anchored garbage disposal. So all I have to do is release the garbage disposal gasket first, and then there is range to easily yank the pipes from their sleeves, everything now pivoting off the wall gasket for added flexible movement. SYSTEM: Left sink basin--> garbage disposal--> large gasket with double-wire spring hose clamp--> 90' PVC connector welded to 1st inlet of brass cast Y-connector welded to copper down pipe running vertical down to P-Trap inlet with twist off/sleeve compression. Removed and cleaned. Right sink basin has copper pipe running down to 90' brass connector welded to copper pipe running horizontally --> tension fit & sparringly sleeved to 2nd inlet of brass Y-pipe. I could visually inspect & snake that pipe all the way up to the Right Sink basket. * It was annoying not being able to see the interior condition of the tailpipe exiting to wall, just the inlet side of the P-trap, which I easily enough snaked. BUT, had I been less lazy and taken the time, I could have unscrewed the adjustable tape hoseclamps holding the wall gasket to have done that, and I just didnt need to. 😊 * I had been initially worried to start the project and fail in resealing the outlet end of the P-trap. Had I known, his system was in place like this, I would have done this sooner & maintenance cleaned more often.
Just would like to compliment the man for putting up a superb instructional video in which he lets his confidence and expertise do the talking instead of a gimmicky and exaggerated personality. So many TH-camrs act as if they are auditioning for the DIY channel.
This is the best explanation I have seen. I have had a chronic problem with my sink's P trap leaking at the nut. Going to go back now, with this knowledge, and hopefully will have success. Edit: It finally worked! One very helpful tip is how you showed there is no gasket in the nut. I had a plastic gasket type thing in the nut, and I took it out and now it doesn't leak. Thanks!
Until about two hours ago, I had a P Trap with the slowest leak on the planet. It was driving me nuts ;o) I had watched your video sometime yesterday, and I woke up in the middle of the night knowing what to do and got started. When you said that the back part doesn't have a gasket and has to fit perfectly flat, that we should "make that guy happy" before dealing with the other connectors, both of which do have gaskets, I was thereby enlightened and able to stop the incredibly-slow-drip madness! No kidding! I was having a really hard time trying to understand why the plumber did not put a seal or gasket in the p-trap dip-to-outlet join. Jeff not only explained that's just how it is, but also explained how i must get that join to line up perfectly first, then tighten the other joints. My wife is gonna think I'm quite the hero after this fix :) . Great big thanks to Jeff!
I am SO glad that you put this video out. I had this exact problem. Thinking about it now, it makes perfect sense as that junction is set up in such a way as it has to be perfectly level so there is no gap. I get it now!! I haven't seen this critical point in other videos on this subject. The connection is not leaking after about 5 minutes - jury is still out as to whether it is fixed - but I think it's going to be ok. Thanks for putting this together. A lot easier and cheaper than getting a plumber over to the house!!
Awesome we also find that sometimes waiting overnight is when you'll see if there's going to be a problem so I would put down the Paper towel likely show there and just leave in and watch for any drops that appear on the paper towel.

Wow. I am replacing a p trap, and was uneasy about the lack of a gasket at that union, but never considered the importance of perfect alignment to compensate. I've watched an awful lot of videos in this journey, and never seen this mentioned. Great video, thank you!

Excellent video, imho. This video really helped me to understand why the P Trap was leaking at one particular joint, and it also showed me what to do to address the issue. I really do wish that all how to videos were this clear and helpful. Great job!
I installed a new plastic p trap because the old metal one was corroded and leaky. I spent an hour trying to get that middle joint to stop leaking. The trap came with three gaskets, so I figured one of them was for that joint. After watching this video, I tried without a gasket and it worked fine. I was misled by the manufacturer! Thanks for your help.
It worked for me, thank you! Ps. When I was sick with cancer I hired a handyman to install a sink. He installed the drain gasket inside the sink instead of below! It was a mess, no putty use! Thanks for guiding me to the RIGHT way!

HUGE HELP! I fixed my disposal around a year ago and forgot how the setup was. Because of this video, I was able to fix my trap and other connections around. Not a drop of water now.

@@jeffostroff believe it or not, it was not a directional issue. i was sort of wedging/resting the gasket between the two pipe pieces and then fastening the connector. and it would actually kind of seal and not leak for a few weeks, until the garage disposal or some kind of movement will eventually knock it loose and leak. your video showed that the gasket was to ride up higher on the pipe, so it didn't require any sort of delicate balancing act to screw the knob. bought a few items off amazon through your link - thanks again
Great video. The clear tube shows exactly where the water flows. Now, I realize they must be aligned properly and not to over tighten. As well as where to add a coupling. Thank you so much! I'm buying the 3 way plumber wrench!!😄
Presentation problems aside I found this to be a very informative and useful video. I had a plumber visit not long ago who told me I'd installed a rubber gasket 'the wrong way around' but not WHY it was the wrong way around or how to fit it correctly like this video did. Also learned why a sink I had not used in a long while had begun to stink like a sewer!
If I have to leave the installation alone (unused) for a long time I tape a foil over the sink's outlet. This 1. lowers the evaporation rate and 2. serves as a seal against odors. Don't forget the overflow outlet!

I'm so grateful for this video. Thank you very much. It makes me laugh to know the only thing I was doing wrong came down to precision of one of the nuts from the p-trap. I thought the cause was something much more serious. Again, so grateful and thank you for posting.
Great helpful video thanks. I had the leak on the 2nd nut. I was having trouble with the rubber gasket, I wasn't putting it on correctly. This video showed me where I was going wrong, I put the rubber gasket on as you showed in this video, and it fixed the problem. An easy mistake to make, but crucial to stopping leaks. No other video I found shows which way around to gasket goes, and how you put it on the downpipe. So thank you for sorting me out.👍
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! My plastic P-trap had come apart over time in my RV with me shoving too much stuff around it in the cupboard. Now I understand how the gaskets work. All I had to do was get the gasket back in place and re-tighten the nut. You're a good teacher!
Man, thank you for making this video exactly like this! I was (apparently) using one of the gaskets that came with my kit in that middle joint you describe so thoroughly, and now I'm off to take it out and hand only tighten it, after I inspect it to make sure I didn't crack it 🙂
OMG! Thank you for the clear p trap demonstration! Been working on a pedestal sink for 3 weeks! Turns out I needed a 1/8" extension for drain pipe connection to existing p trap. Hard to see that small of a gap when lowering sink on pedestal, then reaching in to hand tighten. I needed to understand that p trap connection that DOESN'T use a washer! (I was adding one). Anyway, was here to see how to cut the new PVC extension pipe. Thank you for demonstration.

Absolutely excellent! OK, so I posted the above comment about an hour ago, before fixing the leak. I followed the instructions, and in 5 minutes it no longer leaked. (I will use the newspaper suggestion overnite tho, just to be sure.) I am beyond thrilled to have saved an expensive plumber's fee, about $130+ tax. I have cleaned P traps previously, but they were metal, with rubber seals, so I guess the P trap didn't have to be level, but with PVC it does. You are an excellent teacher! I am a mere woman, and I feel I just took a lesson in "Plumbing 101." A million thanks, and I have subscribed to your channel.

My brand new P trap install, leaked when I tested it (placed a drip pan under the assembly to check). Sure enough, at the union joint. Visually they were square and aligned, with the taper lining up properly. Released the nut, and other compression nuts, and re did starting with the P trap union. Still a Leak.Then I turned to my aircraft fuel line sealant, called Fuel Lube, or also known as EZ-Turn Lubricant. It's a wax based paste that you apply to the joint being sealed. So far, no more leaks.
Thanks so much! I just fixed my pipes under my laundry sink because they were leaking. It was helpful when you said that the pipes needed to be leveled and I didn't need to TIGHTEN THEM WITH A WRENCH; LIKE I HAD. HAHAHA. So I went back untightened them and added a seal/gasket to one of the connections and that did it!

Very very well done. I kept putting a washer on the trap arm where it connects to the P trap and could not get the damn thing to seal. Of course I just kept tightening it, which didn’t work! Now it works fine with no leaks! Thanks. Knowledge is power. Thanks for sharing yours. Also, don’t use background music. It was hard to understand you and very very distracting.
I've also found that sometimes new P trap parts have residual flashing on the mating surface left over from the casting process. It helps seal the joint if you can remove the flashing with either a knife or fine sanding block. Make sure you don't deform the rest of the mating surface, though.
Yes I have seen that also I would be too afraid to send it I don't wanna change the shape of that connection even microscopically because it is so critical
@@jeffostroff You can sand it if you use very fine sandpaper and go around the mating surface, not up and down. As I'm sure you know, water will find a way if there is one. :)
Yes a lot of people brought that to our attention this was our most offending video and regards of the background music being way too loud. We do things a lot different now since this video and we even have a much better camera and microphone set up as well

Very good explanation: Clear and not fumbling for parts. The explanation of fitting the parts was exactly what I need to fix my leak. In my case my metal trap corroded and I tried to just replace that. I must now redo the whole thing which now won't be much of a problem.

Years ago we had metal P-traps, I don't remember the design but they never leaked at the connection, they did corrode and need to be replaced, but I swear if you sneeze in another room these things come loose and leak. There must be something that is solid. I can't keep my kitchen trash can under the sink, the slightest nudge and it leaks. We have MIT and A.I. and this is the best we can do? They work for awhile but always come loose and leak. You video is great but we need a better designed P-trap! I'm 75 and can't do this much longer.
Yes that connection in the middle is the problem in my opinion it should be a gasketed connection I don't know why they made it a friction type connection but it is just very annoying
If you put pipe dope on all the cone surfaces they will not leak, NOT on the threads because they don't seal the connections. It will always be water tight. Nice video.
Yes, I have seen that done on one P-trap and it was working. I still prefer to make the connection work without having to resort to pipe dope, because the experts say it should not be needed, and usually the P-trap makers tell you not to use it. It's really critical alignment that is needed, with not much margin for error, to make sure the trap arm part sits perfectly level into the trap outlet connection, and that you get them on nice and level and tighten good, then go a 1/4 or 1/2 turn beyond hand tighten with the wrench.

One issue I've had is the gasketless connection's angled piece of plastic getting marred or dented by impact with some sharp edged object making that connection worse. Why is that one particular connection designed without a gasket in the first place? Because of the bend? It's the most confusing thing to me.

That's the design of P-Traps, it's a compression plastic against plastic, and I also never understood why they don't have a gasket there, I think it would eliminate a lot of issues that people have with P-traps.

@3:47 thanks for the video, I installed a new sink for my house but it was leaking at the connection nut... after seeing this explanation I re-seated the connection with a focus on lining up that angled lip properly, and that fixed my leak! those clear traps look really cool, I was almost tempted to buy/install one, but reading the reviews lots of 1 stars saying it leaked after a month update: doh, it still leaked, but I think I just did a bad install... I did finally fix it, but had to cut the pipe a few inches from the wall... The main difference this time, is I put the tailpiece on the sink first with half the p-trap attached - using this as my starting point was the key. Then I worked backwards to the wall, dry fitting pieces to make sure everything lined up correctly, then glued it all together. This ensured the angled lip at connection nut lined up 100% instead of at a slightly off angle.

I've had a leak at that center connection forever in my bathroom. I got so frustrated with it I encased the entire joint in silicone RTV to stop the leak. Is there seriously not supposed to be a seal there? That makes no sense! Not arguing the video. Just amazed that an underwater joint with no seal is expected to be water-tight.
Yes, I never liked this design either, but you just have to make sure the 2 sections are joined perfectly and tighten that connection before the others.
I know your comment is old, but I had the exact same issue with that joint. It's just a cheap design. I thought of using an RTV as well and your comment convinced me to just seal it that way.
Great video, very well explained. It makes you wonder if they intentionally did design flaws so that you need to call a plumber! How hard is it to redesign that end to fit straight into the tubing like all the other ones, or maybe I am missing something?😂

Problem I see a lot is people cram too much stuff under the sink and can knock pipes out of whack . Don't see too many plumbed that way with a tee and separate p-traps? 👍
Yes I replaced a garbage disposal last week at a friends house and they had so much stuff crammed under that kitchen sink that it was putting compression against the P trap and pushing back against the cabinet door and the cabinet door would not close flat.

Lifesaver! I took apart the P-Trap, made sure it was well aligned, gave it an extra quarter with brute hand strength, and now no more leak!

I installed a new plastic p trap because the old metal one was corroded and leaky. I spent an hour trying to get that middle joint to stop leaking. The trap came with three gaskets, so I figured one of them was for that joint. After watching this video, I tried without a gasket and it worked fine. I was misled by the manufacturer! Thanks for your help.

Ps. When I was sick with cancer I hired a handyman to install a sink. He installed the drain gasket inside the sink instead of below! It was a mess, no putty use! Thanks for guiding me to the RIGHT way!

HUGE HELP! I fixed my disposal around a year ago and forgot how the setup was.

@@jeffostroff believe it or not, it was not a directional issue. i was sort of wedging/resting the gasket between the two pipe pieces and then fastening the connector. and it would actually kind of seal and not leak for a few weeks, until the garage disposal or some kind of movement will eventually knock it loose and leak. your video showed that the gasket was to ride up higher on the pipe, so it didn't require any sort of delicate balancing act to screw the knob. bought a few items off amazon through your link - thanks again

Great video. The clear tube shows exactly where the water flows. Now, I realize they must be aligned properly and not to over tighten. As well as where to add a coupling. Thank you so much! I'm buying the 3 way plumber wrench!!😄
Presentation problems aside I found this to be a very informative and useful video. I had a plumber visit not long ago who told me I'd installed a rubber gasket 'the wrong way around' but not WHY it was the wrong way around or how to fit it correctly like this video did. Also learned why a sink I had not used in a long while had begun to stink like a sewer!

If I have to leave the installation alone (unused) for a long time I tape a foil over the sink's outlet. This 1. lowers the evaporation rate and 2. serves as a seal against odors. Don't forget the overflow outlet!

I cleaned out the p-trap and then it started just a few drops of a leak right at that p-trap! About to reseat it so hoping that’s the fix!

I had the leak on the 2nd nut.
I was having trouble with the rubber gasket, I wasn't putting it on correctly.
This video showed me where I was going wrong, I put the rubber gasket on as you showed in this video, and it fixed the problem.
An easy mistake to make, but crucial to stopping leaks. No other video I found shows which way around to gasket goes, and how you put it on the downpipe.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! My plastic P-trap had come apart over time in my RV with me shoving too much stuff around it in the cupboard. Now I understand how the gaskets work. All I had to do was get the gasket back in place and re-tighten the nut. You're a good teacher!

Man, thank you for making this video exactly like this! I was (apparently) using one of the gaskets that came with my kit in that middle joint you describe so thoroughly, and now I'm off to take it out and hand only tighten it, after I inspect it to make sure I didn't crack it 🙂

OMG! Thank you for the clear p trap demonstration! Been working on a pedestal sink for 3 weeks! Turns out I needed a 1/8" extension for drain pipe connection to existing p trap. Hard to see that small of a gap when lowering sink on pedestal, then reaching in to hand tighten. I needed to understand that p trap connection that DOESN'T use a washer! (I was adding one). Anyway, was here to see how to cut the new PVC extension pipe. Thank you for demonstration.

OK, so I posted the above comment about an hour ago, before fixing the leak. I followed the instructions, and in 5 minutes it no longer leaked. (I will use the newspaper suggestion overnite tho, just to be sure.) I am beyond thrilled to have saved an expensive plumber's fee, about $130+ tax. I have cleaned P traps previously, but they were metal, with rubber seals, so I guess the P trap didn't have to be level, but with PVC it does. You are an excellent teacher! I am a mere woman, and I feel I just took a lesson in "Plumbing 101." A million thanks, and I have subscribed to your channel.

My brand new P trap install, leaked when I tested it (placed a drip pan under the assembly to check). Sure enough, at the union joint. Visually they were square and aligned, with the taper lining up properly. Released the nut, and other compression nuts, and re did starting with the P trap union. Still a Leak.Then I turned to my aircraft fuel line sealant, called Fuel Lube, or also known as EZ-Turn Lubricant. It's a wax based paste that you apply to the joint being sealed. So far, no more leaks.

Thanks so much! I just fixed my pipes under my laundry sink because they were leaking. It was helpful when you said that the pipes needed to be leveled and I didn't need to TIGHTEN THEM WITH A WRENCH; LIKE I HAD. HAHAHA. So I went back untightened them and added a seal/gasket to one of the connections and that did it!

This explains the trap very well. In the past I was dumb enough to put a gasket on the end where it didn't even need a gasket.

Very very well done. I kept putting a washer on the trap arm where it connects to the P trap and could not get the damn thing to seal. Of course I just kept tightening it, which didn’t work! Now it works fine with no leaks! Thanks. Knowledge is power. Thanks for sharing yours. Also, don’t use background music. It was hard to understand you and very very distracting.

I've also found that sometimes new P trap parts have residual flashing on the mating surface left over from the casting process. It helps seal the joint if you can remove the flashing with either a knife or fine sanding block. Make sure you don't deform the rest of the mating surface, though.
Yes I have seen that also I would be too afraid to send it I don't wanna change the shape of that connection even microscopically because it is so critical
@@jeffostroff You can sand it if you use very fine sandpaper and go around the mating surface, not up and down. As I'm sure you know, water will find a way if there is one. :)

Yes a lot of people brought that to our attention this was our most offending video and regards of the background music being way too loud. We do things a lot different now since this video and we even have a much better camera and microphone set up as well

I appreciate you sir. I called the guys from rotor rooter yesterday and they said it would cost me $1,600 to fix my leakage from the p-trap, and the leaky faucet, as well as a toilet floater issue .
So, I came here to learn it how to do it myself. Thank you for being a great teacher. That $1,600 would go to my kid's 529 plan instead.

Great video... but why don't they just make the connection not on the curve? Couldn't you leave the bottom part as one piece so no leaks?
Very good explanation: Clear and not fumbling for parts. The explanation of fitting the parts was exactly what I need to fix my leak. In my case my metal trap corroded and I tried to just replace that. I must now redo the whole thing which now won't be much of a problem.

Thanks for this video. I just installed a p-trap in a bathroom vanity and all the joints came with gaskets. Still had to be careful to get the underwater joint square though.
That's the key to connecting up the P-trap is keeping that joint square.

Years ago we had metal P-traps, I don't remember the design but they never leaked at the connection, they did corrode and need to be replaced, but I swear if you sneeze in another room these things come loose and leak. There must be something that is solid. I can't keep my kitchen trash can under the sink, the slightest nudge and it leaks. We have MIT and A.I. and this is the best we can do? They work for awhile but always come loose and leak. You video is great but we need a better designed P-trap! I'm 75 and can't do this much longer.
Yes that connection in the middle is the problem in my opinion it should be a gasketed connection I don't know why they made it a friction type connection but it is just very annoying
If you put pipe dope on all the cone surfaces they will not leak, NOT on the threads because they don't seal the connections. It will always be water tight. Nice video.
Yes, I have seen that done on one P-trap and it was working. I still prefer to make the connection work without having to resort to pipe dope, because the experts say it should not be needed, and usually the P-trap makers tell you not to use it. It's really critical alignment that is needed, with not much margin for error, to make sure the trap arm part sits perfectly level into the trap outlet connection, and that you get them on nice and level and tighten good, then go a 1/4 or 1/2 turn beyond hand tighten with the wrench.

One issue I've had is the gasketless connection's angled piece of plastic getting marred or dented by impact with some sharp edged object making that connection worse. Why is that one particular connection designed without a gasket in the first place? Because of the bend? It's the most confusing thing to me.

Great video i was wondering why there was no gasket in the middle part.
That's the design of P-Traps, it's a compression plastic against plastic, and I also never understood why they don't have a gasket there, I think it would eliminate a lot of issues that people have with P-traps.

@3:47 thanks for the video, I installed a new sink for my house but it was leaking at the connection nut... after seeing this explanation I re-seated the connection with a focus on lining up that angled lip properly, and that fixed my leak!
those clear traps look really cool, I was almost tempted to buy/install one, but reading the reviews lots of 1 stars saying it leaked after a month
update: doh, it still leaked, but I think I just did a bad install... I did finally fix it, but had to cut the pipe a few inches from the wall... The main difference this time, is I put the tailpiece on the sink first with half the p-trap attached - using this as my starting point was the key. Then I worked backwards to the wall, dry fitting pieces to make sure everything lined up correctly, then glued it all together. This ensured the angled lip at connection nut lined up 100% instead of at a slightly off angle.
Jeff, you explained everything really well. Just would make a note to remove the music while you are speaking, as it was hard to hear you.

I've had a leak at that center connection forever in my bathroom. I got so frustrated with it I encased the entire joint in silicone RTV to stop the leak. Is there seriously not supposed to be a seal there? That makes no sense! Not arguing the video. Just amazed that an underwater joint with no seal is expected to be water-tight.
Yes, I never liked this design either, but you just have to make sure the 2 sections are joined perfectly and tighten that connection before the others.
I know your comment is old, but I had the exact same issue with that joint. It's just a cheap design. I thought of using an RTV as well and your comment convinced me to just seal it that way.

Great video, very well explained. It makes you wonder if they intentionally did design flaws so that you need to call a plumber! How hard is it to redesign that end to fit straight into the tubing like all the other ones, or maybe I am missing something?😂

Problem I see a lot is people cram too much stuff under the sink and can knock pipes out of whack . Don't see too many plumbed that way with a tee and separate p-traps? 👍
Yes I replaced a garbage disposal last week at a friends house and they had so much stuff crammed under that kitchen sink that it was putting compression against the P trap and pushing back against the cabinet door and the cabinet door would not close flat.
