People don't remember how big the 2005 and 2006 regular season contests between these two teams were. After being thoroughly fooled by the Patriots in the 03 and 04 playoff losses, Manning rolls into Foxborough in 2005 and the Colts lay the smack down with a 3-score victory. (The Colts go 14-2, and then Vanderjagt misses just about the only field goal in his career to that point in a loss to the Steelers who would go on to win it all. Missed opportunity.) But what the Patriots game did was show a Manning who used the 2004 playoff loss as motivation to get over the Belichick hump. Then here, with the Colts perhaps not as good as their 2005 team, but the Patriots much better than their 2005 team, and 1st place the AFC on the line. Again, the game is in New England, the crowd was on fire the entire night, heated rivalry with penalties galore on both sides, and what happens? Manning plays an excellent game with over 320 passing yards and a pair of TD's, while Brady has 0 TD's and 4 INT's (though the final score proves the QB gets way more credit than he deserves). Furthermore, he showed he could beat New England in a close game that mattered. We obviously know he would go on to win one of the greatest AFC Championship games of all-time against New England this season and win his first Super Bowl.
These two regular season games after the 2004 playoff loss were the turning points in the rivalry. He would never lose to them in the post-season again, going 3-0 in their meetings after 2004.

A couple notes from this game:
    1. This was only Brady’s second 4-interception game ever.
    2. This was the last time that Manning would beat the Pats in Foxboro.
    3. Adam Vinatieri has been playing longer on the Colts than the Patriots.
    4. The leading receivers for the Colts that year was HOF receiver Marvin Harrison.
The Pats leading receiver was... Chargers’ cast off Reche Caldwell.
    5. Only 5 players from this game are playing today: Tom Brady, Stephen Gostkowski, Ben Watson, Adam Vinatieri, and Antoine Bethea.
    6. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis finished their careers with 248.5 combined sacks.
    7. Mike Vrabel played in this game - he’s currently the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
    8. Al Michaels: “ The Pats never had a Randy Moss or Terrell Owens.”
The Pats would trade for Moss a year later.
Edit: Only Tom Brady is still playing from this game today.

The only games the Patriots defense gave up more than 21 points in 2006 was against the Colts in their 2 matchups & vs Tennessee when their backup players gave up a late garbage time TD.
You don’t need elite receivers if you have a Top 10 running game & STs unit while also having a defense that only gives up more than 3 TDs in a game to the best offense in football & no one else.

Thanks man; this is a great game with great quality. I've been studying closer and closer by rewinding plays; I'm way more able to appreciate Manning's Colts now then during their peak years. The Patriots are very run focused in this game; from 2004 they always had the ability to switch to a 1990's offense to take advantage of faster defenses.

The 2006 Patriots defense - not counting when their reserves played the 2nd half vs Tennessee - only allowed the opposing offense to score over 21 points twice.
Both games came against the Colts.
Including playoffs, the 2006 Patriots had 16 games where they allowed no more than 21 points.

35:11 ; The Patriots used SO much trap blocking already, more then I've seen in any game of the last decade of rewinding and Identifying plays. Here the TE cracks a D Tackle; they're taking advantage of an aggressive and quick D front that is trying to penetrate and tackle RBs in the backfield. I love trap runs; a TE can take out a DT that's far larger and stronger by hitting them sideways. You just can't do the same play more then 2x before he stops falling for it.

2006 Patriots are the number 2 defense in points allowed. 7th Place Offense. 2006 Colts: #1 Offense, 26th Defense. It's nowhere near an even matchup, Patriots are at home I'd put the spread at -7 for New England. EVERY time top offense plays top defense, the Defense wins. Yet, Manning swept the Patriots, once in reg season once in AFC Championship, after his putrid Defense put them in a 21-3 Hole. Manning ALSO beat the #1 Defense Ravens in the playoffs, another accomplishment that NEVER happens. But sure, Brady is the GOAT? For being On a DEFENSIVE DYNASTY. Nobody wants to put credit where it belongs, I'd be so pissed if I was a Linebacker or Cornerback for the Patriots. Because the real story is how Patriots use LBs, off the edge, or in coverage, and using mid round to undrafted D backs to shut down the pass. And Belichick's secondaries every year destroy even HOF Wide Receivers; ever since 1990 when Bills 3 WR spread Offense was demolished by a modern 2 Dline, 4LB and 5-6-7 Defensive back lineup. Wanna run the ball on New England? hahaha, sure.

LMAOOOO peyton's pick 6 counts against his own defense???? LOL. and brady playing with reche caldwell + jabar gaffney + troy brown as his top receivers vs. HOFers marvin harrison/reggie wayne/edgerrin james/dallas clark and HOF offensive linemen on the colts favors the patriots HAHAHAHAH. btw when the patriots were up 21-3 before the half, they were about to be 28-3 but the refs decided to call holding/OPI to keep the colts in it, and it stayed that way with the refs the rest of the way. there was a bogus faceguarding DPI play where the patriots player didn't TOUCH the defender but they called DPI in the endzone, giving the colts an automatic TD, gifting peyton a super bowl, just like his undeserved broncos SB that he was carried to by von miller and company.

1:17:19 Why is Ellis Hobbs #27 playing press on Marvin Harrison right side; and Asante Samuel is 10 yards off of Reggie Wayne? Wayne's the bigger danger deep? Also I didn't realize Tom Moore's Colts offense is old school; 2 TEs almost every down with #44 Clark in the slot; when his cover man blitzes Clark's route doesn't break off a hot route for easy yardage like all the offenses of today that have experienced QB and WR/TE experience and connection...Maybe 88 Marvin Harrison's route is the hot the guy that breaks off in case of blitz since he seems to get the ball on the blitz. Maybe that's why Hobbs is playing so tight? This is great shit; I'm loving this game, it's simpler then analyzing a 2020 game, modern off and def is about confusing the opponent, which confuses this fan.

  • @WalterWhiteFootballSharing

Manning was called a choke artist endlessly for losing to top level Patriot Defenses 03-04. It's a team game the Patriots had defenses that held 14- 16 points a game every season. WHEN Brady played with non top defenses; he had the same exact results; 07- 09-10-11-12-13,17; namely postseason losses. The same thing that happens to all the greatest QBs who don't have defenses in the top 5 fewest points allowed. The 2016 Falcons were the perfect example; I don't know how they even got a lead against New England's #1 Defense; it should have been a blowout. They scored all year long because if they didn't score 28+ Points, it was an L.

This throw at 55:25 by Tom Brady and the drop by his receiver, along with the commentary by John Madden provided on the replay says it all about his career in the early 2000s and what he was working with. He was always a top 5 talent and massively underrated, yet there was this false narrative about how the defense did the work in those early championships.

Ummm… he averaged 19.9 PPG over his 1st 10 wins. I agree he had some great games like Super Bowl 38 & in the AFC Title Game vs Pittsburgh in 2004 but the defense definitely did a ton of heavy lifting early on in his career.
It isn’t discrediting Brady to point out that his defense was very, very good in the playoffs prior to the 2006 AFC Title Game.

@@P0RKINS2 over his first ten wins lmaooo talk about moving the goal posts. Obviously in 2001 that was his worst and least prepared year. Imagine being asked to come in like zach Wilson right now except with a trash offensive cast and an above average defense, and you proceed to look like a veteran game manager basically as a rookie without any reps with the first team all year. Once it hit 2002, he was carrying them. Led the league in TDs. 2003 onwards he was always top 3-5 in yards and TDs and MVP voting despite average supporting cast. Ppg is so overrated. They played in cold awful weather, not a dainty little dome, and with his weapons, it was all about clock control and possession. He was papercut offense converting brutal third downs repeatedly that stole your soul and helped the defense limit possessions. He kept the games low scoring. Then when it was late game, you knew he wouldn’t make mistakes, and he would drive them to win. He had a symbiotic relationship with great defenses that he should be and is very grateful for, but he was the straw that stirred the drink.

Manning was a BETTER QB. Brady had top defenses every single year. Brady NEVER accomplished what Manning did in 2006 - Win it all With the TWENTY SIXTH Defense in Points Allowed. NOBODY has. Defense wins championships, just look at Patriots, its a Defensive dynasty. Allowing 14, 16, 17 points a game tops. Wow, you're sooo great when all you have to do is score 17 points. Manning had to score 30+, EVERY game, or lose. When the Defenses were merely above average, Brady ALWAYS lost in Postseason. EVERY QB does. 2006 Colts are STILL the only Offense based team, with BAD defense, to win a championship. AND Manning is still #1 in Comebacks. Because he had to, The Colts stopped nobody.

I'm not a Big fan of Tom Brady but he's definitely the best QB to ever play the game and it's not even close. I saw all the damage he did.

Marvin Harrison taunting was hilarious…. Ellis Hobbs got schooled after trying to smack talk. This also shows how classless the Patriot fans are. Vinatieri gave them the best years of his life and won 3 SB for them and all these idiot fans can do is boo him… pathetic fan base

Rams, man, fucking Rams. I hate the Patriots but I had to bet on them to win the SB. I watch too much football, condensed, (here's 100 of em th-cam.com/play/PLbGLzzomCfA5npQeb0jTnkevd_2UmV-FA.html) SB It was the worst possible matchup, because Rams passing offense is all play action. Stop the run and 3rd and 8; nobody is biting on the run fake, RB Malcolm Brown aint getting no 8 yards if its a handoff. Saints MIGHT have had a better chance, stop the run and the Saints are still dangerous.

To date, this remains the last Colts win at New England and it would also mark Peyton Manning’s last win there as well.
