From my vantage point, this rivalry sort of “rose to the top” at a time where there was a vacuum in the NFL. No more 49ers, Cowboys, Packers, Broncos running roughshod. Some parity at the turn of the century… Baltimore, Tennessee, Indy, New England, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Philly, Tampa were all finding success. These two teams (after this game) had a Vice grip on the league for a while. Also, interesting to see this in high def.

I would say most of our super bowl teams made crucial plays when they absolutely have too. That's where the intelligence of bill's coaching stands out. We make plays other teams just don't make, or at least they don't make them that often. Eyes on the ball always. And they do it with no name guys.

And to think if they really pushed themselves, they possibly could have went 19-0 that year, only that opening game blow out loss at Buffalo and a 3 point loss at Washington, which they really didn't play like they should have in that game.

I remember that McGinest play so clearly! I didn't remember any of the rest of this game, but I remember Willie McGinest running right to Edgerrin James and keeping him out of the end zone to save the game! 🙂
It's kinda/sorta like the Malcom Butler interception. Both plays saved wins for the Pats that looked for all the world that they would lose. But they were also significant beyond just the game they helped to seal.
But, of course, since Butlers play sealed a Super Bowl, so that play gets way more coverage and is remembered way more.

I disagree with your title as I think Brady's 2nd career start in 2001 started the rivalry. I remember watching and holding a Indy minus double digits ticket in my pocket that afternoon. Then the rematch a few weeks later. Only difference is I didn't hold the Indy ticket there. Brady got him both times his rookie year and Peyton was dominating the league by 2001.

No one considered it much of a rivalry in 2001 as the Pats and Colts were heading in opposite directions. The rivalry didn't kickstart until Tony Dungy took over the HC job and got the Colts back to a winning record.

Did you know the Colts were responsible for 2 league rules to change thanks to their games against the Patriots in this game and 2004 AFC Division Game
After this game both Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy went to the league and felt the Patriots fake their injuries to slow down their momentum and use the strategy that if Indy scored they would have time on the clock this led to that if a team had an injured player under two minutes they had to burn a time out and if an opponent had no timeouts and use players to fake injury it would be a 10 sec run off with a 15 yard unsportsmanlike.
In the 2004 Division Round The Colts lost to the Patriots 20-3. Dungy and the Colts organization came to the league and stated that the Patriots would jam the Colts Receivers for 10 yards and they felt 10 yards of jamming a WR gave WR no chance to get open this led to the current rule that is known as the Dungy Rule "a Corner Back or Safety or any defender covering a WR only has 5 yards to press a receiver after 5 yards defenders must not press or hold any WR this could lead to either a 10 yard holding penaly or a spot foul pass interference"

Man and that last play call. Tony you gotta be questioned bro haha atleast put a fullback in there. These football coaches get praised for doing absolutely nothing other than working their way up the ranks and making connections to get into their positions. There isn’t really a Revolutionary coach to speak of. So it just comes down to who can recruit + get the most out of their players with the existing schemes. I would be interested to see someone come into football with no football coaching experience but a fresh perspective

I know it’s random and nitpicking but the very beginning of the game and the Pats have a 3rd and 17. They run a perfect play to get into fg range and the announcer is just absolutely clueless. They don’t get the first down, no mention of it being an intentional smart play to get them points. U can’t be so dumb if you’re the voice for the game. U have to clue people in on why they did that and why it’s actually a FANTASTIC play after a terrible sack dropped them OUT of fg range. Gotta know what you’re talking about and doing
