As a Colts fan...this was a great game...kudos to both teams...so many great players, and great clutch plays in a single game. As a TE in college at the time I loved Dilger and Bruener competing as great blockers and receivers. The 90s were so great for football.

I was 12 years old watching this game with my dad and my brother. As good Hoosiers we were used to watching Notre Dame football on Saturday and playing outside on Sunday afternoons, but not after that season. We thought Bailey caught it and we jumped up and down yelling "we're going to the Super Bowl" and hugging each other, then turned back and found out he dropped it. What a heart breaker. My brother called it the worst day of his life. It made finally going to the super bowl 11 years later that much sweeter.

Both teams deserved all the credit in the world for this classic game.
The 9-7 #5 seed Colts in their first playoff appearance in eight years (after having gone 24 years without a playoff win) coming literally within inches of an out-of-nowhere AFC title against the Steelers looking to wash away the bad taste of the previous year's shocker to the Chargers. They very nearly met the same fate but came up big when needed.

Marchibroda alluded to it at the start of this video - that Colts team played so many games that came down to the last play, whether it was against the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers or two games against the God-awful Jets. They could have gone 12-4 and they could have just as easily gone 6-10. Teams like that tend to be dangerous in the playoffs if they get there.

People in this city have this weird mindset that if a quarterback isn't a Hall of Famer, they're complete irredeemable garbage. O Donnell wasn't that good, but he wasn't awful either. He was the most accomplished QB for the Steelers in the 20 year drought between Bradshaw and Roethlisberger. Remember how bad the Mark Malone and Bubby Brister days were? Here's the stat lines for each starting QB from 84-2003:
      Bubby Brister: 55/57 (TD/INT), 69.8 (Rate), 52.5% (Cmp%)
      Mark Malone: 54/68 (TD/INT), 62.4 (Rate), 50.2% (Cmp%)
      Mike Tomczak: 37/43 (TD/INT), 71.6 (Rate), 56.1% (Cmp%)
      Kordell Stewart: 70/72 (TD/TNT), 72.3 (Rate), 56.5% (Cmp%)
      Tommy Maddox: 42/40 (TD/INT), 76.7 (Rate), 58.2% (Cmp%)
      Now here's O'Donnell:
      Neil O' Donnell: 68/39 (TD/INT), 81.8 (Rate), 57.1% (Cmp%)

@1:09 It's so sad to see Bill Cowher with his daughters after the Superbowl loss, but it makes it that much sweeter when they win the Superbowl 10 years later (Feb 5th, 2006), and he is hugging them afterwards.

Harbaugh when surrounded with good talent like he had in 95 was a good leader. I remember thinking he was horrible when he was a Bear then really becoming a fan of his during this season. This colts team kind of reminds me of the 1980 Browns cardiac kids team. They didn't quit even when the other team was probably better. I was definitely pulling for them during this game. I'm a Raiders fan so come playoff time and we weren't in I went with the underdog colts. I was just sick of the cowboys and 49ers winning the super bowl all the time. Little did I know what was to come with Tom Brady winning all but 3 of the 10 or so he was in. Just to go to the super bowl that many times is crazy. Now that he seems to be retiring I wonder what team will be the next dynasty

Man I remember this game very well. I was 9 years old. Had just started watching football like 2 years prior. By now was really getting into it. Playing at school and stuff. My dad went to this game so I was solo watching it at home. Hell of a game. Insane how it came down to a Hail Mary attempt. My dad said you could literally hear a pin drop in the stadium on that last play lol. Crazy. Sucks though too because we went on to lose to Dallas in the Super Bowl in a rough game. I actually cried tears when we lost. It was heart wrenching but it was definitely a point where I knew I was a true Steelers fan. Now here I am 26 years later… die hard.

1:04:55 As a Niners fan, I remember being more nervous the previous year about the Steelers going against them because they did have a great defense and high spirits. Once the Bolts came on top, I thought "Niners got this!" - San Diego with all due respect, had neither.

Thing is,the Chargers were the more physical team than the 49ers. They wanted to do to the 49er's what the Giants did to the Bills in Super Bowl XXV. They just couldn't stop the 49er's offense.

@@quentincampbell612What?????? The Chargers were more physical than the 49ers????? The 49ers had the number 2 defense against the run that year. You don't have that without being physical. Plus they beat on Dall-ass twice that year and then in Dec they blew out the Chargers like 38 -15 . I'm just wondering how you came up with the Chargers being more physical. SMH.....

1995 nfl season introduced me to all the teams including this game…..this game has a ripple effect colts has the worst record in 96 and 97 then they draft manning Steelers after the lost to the cowboys hard AFC title losses and divisional playoff in 97 and 01, 02 and 04 finally in 05 then colts meet the Steelers again this time divisional in Indy and they beat Indy and finally the beat the broncos follow week beat the Seahawks in SB XL. Oh in circa 99 the finally introduced the instant replay

I’ve been a Steelers fan for 50 years now and this AFC title game was one of the ‘ Scariest ‘ I’d ever seen.
It was bad enough that the Steelers blew it the year before, at home against San Diego. But that put even more pressure on us to beat Indy. We had the D to destroy the Colts, but not the offense. Colts D really stepped it up, proving to be more of struggle than what we anticipated. By the time this game was over, I was a lot more ‘ Relieved ‘ than I was elated.
