    Crack from running the heater.....c'mon man, the heater didn't cause that. There was obviously a big rock chip there and the temperature difference caused the crack to spread.

      If you had gone to your insurance company and told them about those cracks before today's "accident" then you would get the windscreen repaired for free, or in worse case pay a bit for a new one (like 10% of the price)

      It could of. I broke my houses window on a cold day when the sun was beaming through my window, so I put a giant pillow against the window so i would't get glare on the TV. About an hour later I hear a large cracking sound, moved the pillow and a massive crack was across the entire window; which I had to then replace :/

    By chance in the middle of the crack it looks like there may have been a ding already? If so that may have been more at fault than just the heat from the vent.

      absolutely. the glass was weakend before with some major damage. that should have been repaired at a carglass shop immediately. water and dirt can of course get into the hole.

      If you have insurance with partly or full coverage (not liability), the deductable for a window replacement is 2000 NOK (about 250 USD) in Norway for most insurance companies, and the insurance price will not change. Everyone in Norway will use their insurance when changing the windscreen, if they don't have liability coverage only that is.

    That’s why I pay $15 to fix rock chips on my windshield, because otherwise it will crack with high thermal stress (I’ve seen it with heat in winter and air conditioning in summer). I don’t think this would have happened without the rock chip, especially since I’ve driven in -30°C with the cabin at 23°C. I’m sure that’s more thermal stress than this demo.

    • @Steinegal
      @Steinegal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Arsham Skrenes funny thing is that rock chips are free with most full and half coverage insurance. Replacing windshield is usually 2000kr($250) when you have full insurance

    Im a safelite AutoGlass technician, from looking at the crack i can tell you that you already had a chip on the windshield, probably from a rock while driving, than the temperature change made it spread, at safelite we always tell our costumers to bring it in for a repair asap to avoid things like this. So ya, you already had a chip on it.

    • @nottheone1357
      @nottheone1357 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If he had Safelite fill the chip properly this would not have happened.

    • @skakamj0lk
      @skakamj0lk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol and lol. You have no way to prove your claims either way. Glass is unpredictable under quick temperature changes and looking at the damage alone is not evidence enough. I agree a chip will increase the probability but it doesn't exclude the chance of it happening to an undamaged window. This is just the nature of safety glass.

    • @nottheone1357
      @nottheone1357 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Key words are "quick temperature changes" The defrost on a car does not create a rapid change in temp and that is what it takes to crack a good windshield. Pouring hot water on any windshield will crack it but turning a defrost on high should not unless it is defective.

    • @skakamj0lk
      @skakamj0lk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't be silly, you have nothing to back up that argument except your own perception on this. What medium you use to transfer the heat (water/air) is not the primary cause to why this can not happen when using a defroster on the windshield.
      Products with manufacturing defects can be found everywhere, this might be an example of it. And of course the defroster can output enough heat to crack a windshield. The car is plugged and has a very powerful heating source, more then enough to crack a windshield. We just saw it happen in this video in fact.

    Hello from Chicago. The technical term is "stress relief." The glass cracked due to what others have said: you already had a chip in the windscreen and the thermal stress (expansion or contraction depending on temperature) caused the crack to propagate across the surface. This time not Tesla's fault.

    Bjorn, the ding in the middle of that crack was there before, I assume? Did you have it repaired by injecting that resine, or did you leave it like that? Becaus that looks like the reason why the windshield cracked, not the way you preheated...

  • @devinthreethousand

    It looks like there's an impact point already... and the crack just spread from the heat? Am I missing something? I don't think the windscreen could have cracked just from heat alone... I precondition my Ampera all the time without wiping the windscreen and have never had an issue.

      The rock chip definitely created a weak spot, but I've driven with rockchips for years and have not had this happen. It's likely that the size and shape of the windshield or temperature of the heater also had a impact.

    The crack was caused because there was a chip in the windshield that is visible on the video. The sudden increase in the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the car then caused the pre-existing chip to expand and cause the crack. From a Canadian.

    In high school, my friend threw a water balloon at a truck that was sitting in the hot parking lot all day, and the windshield cracked from the temperature difference.
    If you aren't getting it fixed you should test if putting clear nail polish in the crack will stop it spreading. you can get cheap kits from china for like $5 that will make a stone chip invisible, but they say if you put nail polish, let it dry and scrape the surface with a blade, it works as well.

  • @Steppenkater
    @Steppenkater 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The real reason for the crack was the stone chips. You have at least two of them and you didn't let them repair. That was the real fault.
    Next time when you get another crack you will tell us, don't drive on humpy roads ;)

  • @KirbyVandivort

    I think you needed some of that Semi glass.

  • @RedBearAK
    @RedBearAK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Definitely propagated from an already existing chip that weakened the tempered surface layer of the glass. Millions of people preheat with high heat on the windshield and ice on the outside every day without having this happen. A lot of times hard ice can't be removed without some preheating. There's nothing abnormal about defrosting the windshield like that.

  • @MorganTrvolt
    @MorganTrvolt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With snow on the windshield, the termal difference when you get a few clear spots that are warm (clear of snow), and snow other places making those part 0⁰C, the thermal stress will make weaknesses like that chip there appear.

  • @fullselfdriving366

    I actually thought of this earlier today, ironically, when I watched your previous video. Like, how bad is it for the windscreen that it is blasted with full heat immediately? This hasn't really been an issue before EVs came along, since ICE cars can't blow warm air before the engine has heated up.

    I always pre-heat my Nissan leaf in winter time, and that puts full blast on the windshield - nothing on the feet. I have never had anything like this happening to me. You obviously had a very weak point where that rock hit. I would claim that you were extremely unlucky here. If you don't have any significant damage on your glass, you should be able to do what you did, without damages.

    This is because of the impact from a rock previous to this event. The same happened to me, but on a hot summerday when I decided to wash my car with rather cold water. My windshield cracked from side to side, which is due to tensions in the glass that tend to break from a stones impact and out.

  • @pegefounder

    You just demonstrated the main problem of photovoltaic / thermal combinations. The idea is to take the heat from the photovoltaic on the back side to use it with a heat pump. But full sun shine heats the front glass up to 80 degree Celsius and on the back side are the cooling pipes with just 10 degree cold water. This can cause problems like You just showed.

    Don’t worry. You are not stupid. Soon or later the windscreen cracked anyway, since you had a stone impact, which is clearly visible. Smart repair, quickly after the “accident” can avoid such cracks, but still without warranty. I had such an issue, when the car was parked outside at a hot summer day and it suddenly started to rain. It was just bad luck.

    What if you have 3 mm of ice on the windshield? A heated windshield helps a lot, always address the windshield chips if you don't want to replace it. No matter what you do, because temperature variation is inevitable, eventually the windshield will break but you can prevent this by using a special resin to fill the gaps left from pebbles impacts.

      The green sticker is from Switzerland, maybe only used for foreigners? The other one I don't know. In Norway we no longer use the colored stickers (used to go on the license plate). The police and road authorities use ANPR. Toll Plazas use AutoPASS tags - from their website:
      All toll plazas in Norway are automatic, except for Atlanterhavstunnelen, and you can drive through them without stopping even if you do not have a tag.
      If you are driving without a tag:
      A photograph is taken of the registration number of all cars that drive through without a tag. An invoice is sent to the vehicle owner by post and with no additional charge. This also applies to foreign vehicles.

    Just my own opinion. Remember when you fill a glass with hot water, empty it and immediately put a cold water in it, it breaks. That’s because glass is not a good conductor of heat and my guess is that the windscreen had a lot of tension going on - rapid heat and cold from both sides. Or I might be wrong :)

    I love living in a place where I don’t have to worry about snow on my car. And even if I did live in a place like that I would try to get a place with a garage.

    I'd certainly be happy to contribute to fixing the windscreen, you saved me from making the same mistake. I could easily have used that setting!

    Differential temperature means the glass will flex, but the weight of the snow on it prevents that.

    I done it for almost 40 years and never have a problem. The trick is you take the snow off with a brush or a broom.

    That is why you should always get stone chips sorted before winter.

  • @Holdfast

    Here in Canada at least a stone chip like that will always eventually spread if not repaired. I think you just accelerated the process.

    But why the windscreen does not have these heater wires inside? I own a cheap Ford and it has tons of these "wires", you can see them if you focus on them.

    Bjørn...you're not stupid...you were using the defroster as it was designed. I agree with the others here that your issue was with that rock chip. Now you know!...and I'm not talking about Zac and Jesse...lol! Cheers, John ;)

    Soon as I got my Model X I put ClearPlex on it for peace of mind. Now I can drive without worry of rocks hitting my windscreen. You should check to see if it is sold were you live. When you get your windscreen replace put it on.

    It hurts me to think how expensive it is to replace that huge windscreen. Also I hope this doesn't happen normally and the chip was the cause because I've never had this happen to me on any car.

    You definitely had a stone chip on the windscreen. The thermal shock has forced it to open a crack. Heating alone wouldn't crack an otherwise healthy windscreen glass.

  • @mckperera
    @mckperera 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes the stone chip probably allowed the crack to occur in the first place. Get an original glass. When I replaced the glass of my BMW it was never the same noise levels increased, reflections increased. In the UK windscreens are cover by car insurance. Get clearplex coating in future

    Martin in Gothenburg, Sweden. Swedish caravan centres sell motor vehicle fuses with telltale LED's that light through leakage across them when the fuse blows. Saves hunting for the broken fuse... It's a one time expense to replace all the fuses on your vehicle and buy a few in reserve. Only the smallest fuse, 2.5A, is not available with LED telltale...

    If you pour hot water over the windshield it can crack even without any defect. But the heater should not sause such a damage.

  • @MultiANTI
    @MultiANTI 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    why did it crack?

  • @GameThroughs
    @GameThroughs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's from stone, not from heating. There's a hole of stone chip, at some point when you driving stone picked up on your windscreen, and heating caused a glass to break at that point. It happened to my car also and it happened on summer, not preheating. I got stone chip like that in the middle of the windscreen and when it was really hot, it was 50c in the car one day i got inside and saw that my windscreen cracked at point from bottom to direction through stone chip, next day cracking continued all the way to top of windscreen.
