    Brilliant set up Kathleen! I'm in awe of how well the space has been thought out. The fact that you can leave your back seats in and have them deployed WITH the sleeping system folded behind is fantastic. Best of both worlds. Congrats and I hope you enjoy your new build out.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Having plenty of storage space was essential to me, especially because I knew I wouldn't have a whole lot of head space once the platform was in. Just had to get a bit creative (thanks Dad) and be mindful of how we built the platform with all of its features. I'm usually the one who drives in my group of friends so taking out the back seats was NOT an option.Hahahahaha!

    LOVED this video!! I learned so much. I just finished my build in my 2014 Honda CRV. Now I'm fitting it with all the things I need before I hit the road. I think the sport-brella is my favorite. I'm considering this option instead of hooking an awning to my roof rack. Awesome idea!

    Very nice setup. I particularly find it genius that you can fold it all up and leave it in place to get full use of you back seats making storage concerns fly out the window. Also love that mesh you use on the windows for privacy AND bug deterrent. Well done.

    Dear Hungry Hiker. First you are and always will be a PCT thru hiker. You were formerly hiking but once earned the badge is for like. Sorta like once a marine always a marine. Thank you for your design and video. I’m contemplating either upgrading my Outback like this, buying small camper or just renting motel rooms (benefit of life long savings). Loved many aspects of your design - side cubbies, kitchen fold out, umbrella (ingenious), center leg, etc. keep us inspired

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this! I say it all the time, "thru-hiking has ruined my life." Once you thru-hike a long-distance trail, it changes you (in the best way) and you're never really the same person afterwards. I'm a proud thru-hiker and hope to do more long-distance trails in the near future! PS: My SUV camping conversion has saved me a lot of money on motel/hotel rooms and has provided me with countless warm and comfortable nights of sleep at numerous campsites. I highly recommend it!!

    So many cool ideas here! For solo jump starting...you may want to check out the Tacklife T8 Lithium battery booster, or similar item. I've used the T8 once so far and it worked out great having it. I still keep the traditional jumper cables and AAA membership as back up though. Have fun out there!

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! When getting the jumper cables, I did see the battery boosters, but I honestly didn't know enough about them to warrant the purchase. I'll do some research and go back once I've decided which one I want. That wouldn't be a bad idea to have, especially if there are no other cars around to use the jumper cables with. I'm definitely a member of AAA. They have already been helpful so far this year when I ran over a nail and got a flat tire.

    My car is 2016 Outback; no platform but layers of carpets and a space blanket. I’d sleep on one side above a foam mat and a big agnes air pad. The other side is for equipment and gear. No roof box therefore everything has to be in the car. I have 2 sheepskins that are about 2/3 of my body length. A carcamping youtuber put sheepskin on her camping chair and under her sleeping bag. Extra income idea!!! List it on AirBnB when you're out on an extended trip. "Cozy Car Camper just waiting for you to enjoy at trailhead" Call the fold out table a bar and you could charge even more! Just another way to make extra $$$ while hiking! C'mon Kathleen, you know me, it's bloody brilliant!

    I have loved exploring your channel the last few weeks, thank you so much! I feel so much more confident and excited to go on more solo hikes and adventures! I have been trying to find a car camping design set up that would work for me and havent loved what I've seen. Your design is perfect! I have a different car but think I can modify the ideas you presented to work well! I cant thank you enough and if I'm ever in PNW area would love to connect with you or pass you on a trail! Thank you again!

    Awesome job!!! I’m thinking of doing the same idea but I’m thinking of covering all of my wood with a black groos point material . Not really sure yet. Have to give you an A+ on your creative ideas.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I thought about covering the wood, but since we got such a nice piece of plywood, it didn't need it. It's smooth and there's very little chance for splinters or snags. Adding anything to the wood would have been a timely and unnecessary for my build. If you choose a cheaper, rougher piece of wood, then yes, I would definitely recommend covering it with something so it doesn't;t snag your gear or give you splinters. Good luck!

    Nice, very well thought out, I hope to bump in to you out there. I'm going from Copper Cr, to Mowich Lk. next trip, staying far below Wonderland trail. I love my backwoods trips being dropped off and picked up. 90% of my trips are just like yours, sleep at the Jeep after a day on some trail.

    You've seen the the SUV camping build for my DIY sleeping platform in my Subaru Outback. Now watch to see my SUV camping setup for my Subaru Outback - all ready for car camping! I’ve included a full tour along with a detailed explanation and demonstration of my sleep system, cooking system, kitchen area (my favorite part of my build), all the storage space I have throughout my SUV and all of the gear and accessories I’ll be using for car camping. I’ll also show how my DIY sleeping platform folds up into itself and sits in the back of my car whenever I want to carry passengers in the back seat.

      Loved your video. Great ideas. Thank you for sharing this great build. One question, as a female... how do you handle bathroom needs day and night (both 1 and 2?) My biggest dilemma! Thanks!

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@annc5724 I don't spend long periods of travel time in my car when camping yet, but when I do, I camp at campgrounds that have facilities like a pit or flush toilet. You can also stop and gas stations or truck stops when on the road as well. As a thru-hiker. I'm pretty used to having to go to the bathroom (both 1 and 2) while out on trail, so having to do this outside without access to a pit or flush toilet is 100% normal for me.

    In addition to jumper cables I highly recommend on of those battery packs that double as a jump starter. Mine is an Imazing brand that was like $50 and has been a life saver. I charge it like once a year and it loses like 10% charge during that time. It saved my butt when my 7 year old battery died and saved the day when my aunt left her truck lights on.

    Very nice - well thought-out and well done. Subaru Outbacks are great! I drive for a large agribusiness all over the midwest - our fleet cars are Outbacks. I average 1000 to 1500 miles a week in them, so I’m quite familiar with them. Super cars!
