Thank you for introducing us to Gary. Gary is smarter than the average guy. I can tell he has van life experience plus innate knowledge, skills, and abilities that far exceed the norm. I downloaded the video and his ideas. Please thank him, for me, for his time, talents, and resourcefulness.
Thank you Amanda. I often learn something valuable from your channel. I like that little tent and his table; they might be nice additions to our minivan camping. You, my dear, rock.
When I saw the tent from a distance in your last video I knew it looked awesome but wanted a closer look. It’s beautiful. It looks rugged enough to withstand wind better than other tents Ive seen. I love so many items he showed. I loved the footstool and the motion lights on the car. Thank you for sharing.
I really enjoyed this video! Amazing what you can do with a small area and still have a wonderful camp! I love the tent! Amanda what a good interview! You ask such great questions and I can’t say how much I enjoyed this!❤
I love the tent & all of its many uses. Especially love the stool, lights, shower & sunroof fan ideas. Cargo carrier too! Just brilliant & super organized. Thanks Gary & Amanda!!
Hello Amanda and Gary, this is Gary the second with Tatiana I have those kind of security lights great lights they have a magnet to them. Best of luck best witches, nice to meet you, Gary.
So many great ideas!!! Thank you so much = I am just starting to get my Subaru Outback (named "Tank") ready for some traveling. baby steps for me in the beginning! I learned a lot! Great video!
I have never named a vehicle before but some friends urged me to when I bought my Outback. Mine is G.I. Jane because she is an army green color and drives like a tank. Haha. Like minds here.
I'm a big fan of simple or no builds (that's what I have). This has a good use of space and the pull drawers doubling as added counter space is definitely a game changer. As for your Renorgy panel if for whatever reason you get a secondary power source you could take bungee balls or bungee cords and strap it onto your roof rail both horizontally or vertical and get your charge on. Adventure on my friends!!
I love this post ! Please can Gary share a link that he used to build his platform - he said it was “on TH-cam and it’s a common design”. I’d so appreciate it TIA ❤
Pretty Good job. Constructive Criticism: put a microphone on your guest so the audio levels are the same, and let him speak without interrupting. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Amanda for featuring Gary's set up. I travel and live out of a converted Outback with my Irish setter, so it was fun to see his set up. My home base is Papillion NE (which is close to Omaha). I am sure Gary knows Nebraska is a perfect place to base out of as it is in the center of everything! Hope to cross paths with both of you some day! Take care and safe travels
Gary had some great ideas. I camp in a Kia Sorento and I have one of the tents which is very convenient. Cooking is a lot easier inside the tent, even if the wind is blowing.
Wow! Our setup’s are uncannily alike. I’m in an ’06 Toyota Highlander and our organization is nearly identical, even down to the (cutting) board (laptop) desktop stored under the mattress. I also have a Clam but bigger, lived in it for a month in Baja, but I love your size, very compact and practical. I gleened some great ideas from this setup that I will incorporate in my rig for year two of my full-time freedom flight 😉. Thanks so much for sharing! See you on the road!
Thx for interviewing him on his Forester setup. I have a friend who has this newer type of Subaru Forester who was looking for ways to convert from urban daily driver mode to camper mode. Also, I appreciate seeing his smaller Clam tent setup since they pop right up. Using a shower curtain with carabiners is a good alternative to buying another side.
Nice video. I have a Subaru Outback (went for length. Forester had higher headroom). I have the same Thule (too-leh is how I’ve heard it pronounced). Couple of comments. I believe that the Clam is a screen room not a tent. Tent implies more of a sleeping place that you can zip up and close the door. It’s 6’x6’ and would barely fit a cot. Mine came with two panels. I was able to buy two more and was trying to make a door by cutting one panel into two sections. Don’t think I finished it. The main thing I don’t like about the Clam is the weight and the packed length. I’m surprised the Clam fits inside that small roof box. I would have thought it would have to travel on top of the bed or strapped to the roof. I’m a hair under 5’ and find the Clam awkward.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I got good ideas as I too am a car/tent camper. You should encourage Gary to start his own channel, I would definitely subscribe. Thank you Amanda, Gary and Wynston 😊
Nice Tour Thanks! Maybe you could post some Links for the “Round Adjustable Orange Stool” you use as a foot rest and “Motion Lights” you have to scare Varmints at night.
The correct pronunciation of Thule is “Too-lee” (rhymes with “truly”). Thanks for wondering. I’ve been pronouncing it incorrectly for years. When you asked it prompted me to find out!
That moonroof computer fan(s) insert can also be designed to work in a car door window; a rear window. The fans can be powered by a small battery pack. I use corrugated plastic sheeting as the framework for the fans, it slides nicely into the window channels & it's weather proof.
Amanda you a good interviewer. Much better than the "Bob" who says the same thing over and over. No disrespect to Bob. Amanda you stay on track pretty well. Just a heads up the year of the car can be important as well as the owners height, if they sleep in it. My question is: Where is the opening video shot @ 0:06? I want to go there! btw I live in Mesa. Thank You - Safe Travels!
I haven’t read all the comments but it’d be nice if you had links to all the cool stuff Gary (and you) have. It was hard to know and hear some of what Gary said and you would mention you had the same item too but no link or clear comment on the item(s). I’ll head to more of your videos to see if you list them. Thank you. You and Gary are very informative.
Good job on the tour. And Gary has done a great job making his Subaru an adventure mobile. Although i was curious what he uses his front passenger seat for? Clothes I'm guessing?
Good job, was wondering what he stores in the front seat though? I just bought that same tent a month ago and am looking into a Subaru now. How fitting you just came out with this video.
We have a question for Gary! What is the thing that you have in your hatch so the lights don't come on? My sister has a Honda HRV and is thinking of trying it, but we can't really see exactly how you did it or what is stuck in there.
Amanda linked it in the pinned comment at top - the orange camping rug. The reverse side is a turquoise color, which happens to be Amanda's favorite color. I think she sent Wynston over a couple of times to drag it out of my tent but he got distracted by treats.
Hi Amanda. Newer viewer of your channel. Really liked Gary’s tour. Would like to try to find the same outdoor motion lights he has. Would you know the brand by any chance? Thanks in advance.
Question: About the hook in the hatch door in the lock mechanism, assuming it actually does “lock” the door. How do you then unlock the mechanism and get hook out.
It makes the car think the rear gate is closed. Otherwise there is a passive power drain on the battery for 20 minutes after opening which resets any time any other car door is opened. Without this hack, my car battery is dead after 3-4 days of boondocking.
Thanks. But I must have poorly worded my question, I'm not asking the why you did it, I'm asking the how... She didn't zoom in enough to tell what you actually did.-.@@Gopepper
I bought a thick S hook at hardware store that matches the size of the latch. I push it into the latching mechanism and leave it. When I want to remove it, I push the button tailgate to open the latch and it releases.
Ahhh ok. It looked kind of like a caribener but the S-Hook makes more sense. I'll have to try that on my Honda minivan. Thanks so much for the clarification!@@Gopepper

You’re a great interviewer Amanda. Gary seems like a really nice guy, and he had some useful ideas. Thx.

Hi you guys, I was wondering what size is his tent. Thank you. Be safe :)
It’s the smallest one Clam makes. 6x6x6 at the edges, and closer to 7x7x7 at the pop out points. I am 6’ tall and easily stand inside.
I have only one question! How tall is Gary? Bravo both of you :)
I think he's around 6'1.
Amanda your lights time out too I have the same van as you. Just saying
I always have my interior lights completely turned off.
Question: About the hook in the hatch door in the lock mechanism, assuming it actually does “lock” the door. How do you then unlock the mechanism and get hook out.
Because the door wouldn’t close if lock is activated???
I push and hold the gate open button for a few seconds, which opens the latch and the carabiner is released.
Could u ask him what kind of pump he uses for his shower.
Where does Gary kwwp the spare wheel?
What is the hatch hack for keeping the light out??
I think he said without it the interior light stays on for 20 mins & drains the car battery
It makes the car think the rear gate is closed. Otherwise there is a passive power drain on the battery for 20 minutes after opening which resets any time any other car door is opened. Without this hack, my car battery is dead after 3-4 days of boondocking.
