      I also have a 2015 outback would your dad be willing to sell that as a kit. ?? I know my dad would help me if he was alive. Either way I’m so happy for you. Just outside Portland Oregon. 💕💕 Love your video.

      I warned my Dad before I put this video online for publication consumption, he might have a few business offers come his way. He confirmed with me that this would only be a father-daughter project. He’s got too much going on to turn this into a business. So hopefully the step-by-step video helps! Good luck!!

This was the first thing I asked my Dad when we started my buildout.I knew he would help me create something magical and others would be interested in getting one of their own. This is a super awesome setup, I may have to do something similar for my Outback. If I may make a suggestion, though?
    The screws for attaching the support pillars inside will 1) wear down the wood over time as they're put in repeatedly, and 2) become a hassle to put in/out, especially if you end up taking the platform in and out of the car a lot. If 2 isn't a big deal, I would look into putting some metal threaded inserts into the supports and using some bolts to screw them in, that should last a lot longer. Another possible solution would be to hinge the supports and use something like a locking table leg stay to hold it up when the platform is in place.
    Regardless, looks like a great build, I wish I still lived near enough to my dad to have access to all his power tools.

      The height of the storage bin space is a wee bit taller than these bins. We measured and built the platform around these storage bins since I knew these are the ones I wanted to use for my car.

    Question: You kitchen table folds back on to the rest of the sleeping platform (btw.... I love the curves so it easily opens through the back hatch). ... when the table is folded, do you find the table brace lumpy under your memory foam bed?

    Hi Token, Spirit Kick (PCT '18!). I just got an Outback and we seem to have similar intentions as a trailhead basecamp. I've been waffling between several designs and am glad I encountered your walkthrough. I love the custom support you have in the second row and I never considered a flip-out table from the tailgate. One big question I have is how tall is your platform, and with the memory foam in place, how much headroom do you have inside? Finally, now that you have it in-place, would you make any layout changes? Thanks again!

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Spirit Kick - Whoo Hoo PCT Class of 2018!! That was the best year to hike the PCT IMO!! Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your comment. I finally remembered today to go out and measure my car and platform for you so I could answer your questions. The height of the platform is slightly different at the head area (the top) due to the slight slant of the floor space due to the back seats being folded down. This area at the head/top is 7 inches, plus I have the 2 inch memory foam topper on top of the platform. This gives me about 20 inches of headroom in this area.
      The height at the feet area (the back of the platform) is a little taller because it doesn't have the slant from the back seats. This area at the feet/the back is 8.5 inches, plus there's .5 inches for the fold out table that sits on top of the platform when I'm not using it.
      I don't think I'd make any changes to the platform or build out. I've camped in it several times now and it's perfect for me!!

  • @oddities-whatnot
    @oddities-whatnot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Problem is, the raised bed area gives you very little headroom to get changed etc. I have the same car, I would rather just use the flat floor when seats are folded down to sleep on. My other stuff can just go wherever I want it to go. Too much thinking going into some of these conversions. Keep it simple I say.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If that works for you, great! There’s no problem with the way I’ve converted my Subaru. I converted it the way I wanted it and it’s been working out perfectly for me. I’m not trying to sell anyone on a specific way they should do their car camping conversion. I’m simply sharing my process of what I’ve done and what works for me. Take it or leave it. I’m personally not bothered by the limited headspace. I can change in my car just fine and I’d much rather have all the storage underneath. If my conversion doesn’t work for you, that’s fine. There are plenty of other videos out there on TH-cam that you can find inspiration from.

    Maybe you could put the center pole on a hinge to the platform so you don't have to screw and unscrew it. It would just fold up with the top.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the center pole just as it is. Takes a few seconds to take the screws out and put them back in. Also, with folding up the platform, the center piece would hit the back of my front seats if it was hinged onto the platform. Then I’d have to move my front seats forward. That would be a pain.

I notice that the "kitchen table" when folded up would cause the platform to be higher than the part of the platform that is over the second row of seats and that there is a board across the "kitchen table" to firm it up and attach the legs. Do you feel either of these when you are sleeping? It doesn't look like your memory foam is very think.

    Very cool. Your dad seems like a pretty resourceful fellow! I've been wanting to do some overlanding. I may have spent my vehicle money rather poorly on a 1986 GMC Suburban, lol. Only reason I say that was a poor choice is it's in need of work. I could have picked up something 20 years newer needing almost nothing for under $4000. But in fairness the 86 only cost me $1500 and it's a 4x4 4-speed suburban! How cool is that!? lol. Thanks to my late father I have a very deep love for the old squarebody (1973-1987-ish) Chevrolet and GMC trucks and suburbans. So it's purely for nostalgia reasons rather than practical reasons that I have a 35 year old suburban for this purpose rather than one that's just ~15 years old or so.
    Anyway loved the simple build of your platform. Do you plan on packing mostly dried foods or rehydratable stuff or are you going to add some kind of 12 volt fridge? I'm going to be putting a platform in mine as well but plan on kitting it out with at least a basic auxiliary 12v system as I plan to use mine as more of a mobile cabin or RV and plan to sleep in it primarilly rather than just the occasional overnighter before a hike where I'd have a tent or something with me for the large part of the camp.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! For car camping, I plan on getting more creative with my food than I can be on trail. I've got a hard and soft cooler that fit in my car easily along with a propane stove. I'm still figuring out a power source for when I want to go off the grid. I'll be doing a separate video on my car camping setup with all of the accessories including my cooking system, sleeping system and the gear I'll be packing with me on a regular basis so stay tuned for that.
      PS: I get the sentimental choices! :) This is a big reason why I opted to have a few special pieces of wood incorporated with the build instead buying all new pieces. Makes it so much more special, not only the wood, but also having done this whole build with my Dad.

Oh and i've got a coleman dual burner propane camp stove as well. Thankfully I didn't need to use any of them when winter descended on us here in Texas as I had power the entire time. Would the floor of your Outback be comfortable enough with just a foam topper or an air mattress without the platform? ( is it level) Asking for a friend?

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone who has slept on the floor of my Outback on both an air mattress and a foam topper, I'd say both options are fairly comfortable, BUT the floor is not level. There's a bit of a dip on the floor where the back seats go down. Plus, there's also that empty space between the back of the front seats and the top of the back seats when they're put down. If you're not careful, your head can fall down in that empty space. I used to stuff this area with multiple yoga mats, just to fill the space, but it was never 100% comfortable.
      As for the air mattress, it was fairly comfortable until it popped in the middle of the night while camping up at the mountain pass in the dead of winter. That was a tough night of sleep. Hope that helps.
