How Kyuss Made History and Pioneered Stoner Rock / Desert Rock

- As Stoner Rock pioneers Kyuss, Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, Brant Bjork, John Garcia, Scott Reeder and Alfredo Hernández redefined heavy/hard rock. From the Californian Desert, the band created a sound of such earth-quaking proportions that it birthed a new genre. Working with Chris Goss, three of the four albums they made rank among the most overlooked of the 1990s: 'Blues For The Red Sun', 'Welcome To Sky Valley' and '...And The Circus Leaves Town'. With this video, we take a look back and review how Kyuss made history with their unmistakable psychedelic rumble.

One of the best videos on Kyuss I've seen! The way you so eloquently described the band's sound is exactly how I feel every time I listen to Blues For The Red Sun and Sky Valley: the loose and bombastic rhythm section accompanied by a god-like, beefy guitar tone heavier than the white desert sun is like a massive punch to the gut - you feel all of it with your *soul!* My second favourite band of all time (after Radiohead), and Sky Valley - my second favourite album of all time (after Kid A). They're the reason I fell in love with the C standard tuning and using the neck pickup for heavier tones.
And, while I'm not as big on ...And The Circus Leaves Town (in no small part thanks to Brant, who was also one of the main songwriters alongside Josh leaving the band), you gotta admit that Spaceship Landing (and the hidden track Day One) is one hell of a note to end on.
A few more fun facts about Kyuss:
Dave Grohl once saw Kyuss perform live and fell in love with them so much that he gave Kurt a copy of Blues For The Red Sun and suggested that the third Nirvana album be produced in a similar fashion (unfortunately, Kurt wasn't a fan of the idea; there are even rumours of him angrily throwing copies of that album into crowds during live performances). Might also explain why Dave ended up temporarily becoming the drummer for Queens of the Stone Age during the Songs For The Deaf era (and eventually forming Them Crooked Vultures).
In 1993, Kyuss went on tour with Metallica in Australia, and apparently even outclassed them with their performances (during their golden line-up days with both Brant on drums and Scott on bass). There's a recording of one show on TH-cam, but, unfortunately, the quality leaves much to be desired (it's no live at the Bizarre festival in 1995, that's for sure; fantastic show BTW, a must-watch for anyone interested in Kyuss).
Tool actually covered one of their songs, Demon Cleaner, with Scott Reeder as a guest performer! Pretty solid version, if you ask me (it's no original, of course, but still pretty good).

spaceship landing has one of the greatest guitar solos of all time, catamaran is insane, one inch man has the most hard hitting chugging machine sounding riff, tangy zizzle starts off so cold and desolate and then devolves into an absolute headbanger full of angst, phototropic is so smooth and charming, size queen with its slick groovy yet super dejected sound, and the circus leaves town is the perfect album imo
Kyuss tone is soo warm bro, i turn on Welcome to Sky Valley and it wraps its dropped tune warm arms around me and welcomes me to rock and roll home.

Favorite band ever...Sky Valley is the greatest album ever made...my wife scored me a vinyl copy this past Christmas.

Don't forget about the Kyuss/Queens split from 97. They finally paid their homage to Sabbath as pioneers of the heavy sound before them (Into the Void with a really cool extend jam in the middle), Fatso Forgotso also sexy as hell, with a similar jam. The bass and guitar just melt together on the rhythm parts, but you also have some of the best moments of Josh as a soloist. The Queens side is a nice change of pace, it starts with an early version of If Only. The album captures really well Josh transition in sound (it's a split after all, so you can obviously hear both sounds side by side) .

The bongos and drums in the middle of Into the Void are epic such a great cover! In some ways it surpasses the original.
Even among Kyuss and QotSA fans, …And The Circus Leaves Town is insanely underrated. Phototropic, Catamaran, El Rodeo, Gloria Lewis, Tangy Zizzle, everything on there, it’s an amazing album.
spcaeship landing is my all time favorite song after 10 years or so that I first listen to it. Is like an ode to the band break the hardest way possible to finish a discography and closure a period of their lives. So cool.
The greatest band of all times. Blues, Hardcore, Psych-Acid, Hard Rock, Space Rock, Doom and beyond, all in one package, you can't possibly ask for more.

Kyuss is very great band with own special history (moment), that is available only for those, who was there at the time, or those who was able to find it.
1n 1992 I was 21. I read a review of BFTRS and it said, "This music is like molten concrete being poured over your head." I had never head them so I went to search the stores. (No internet then) Found the vinyl album at Bill's in Dallas and have never stopped listening. Life changed.

A little late to the party yet ever hear Goatsnake? Perfect collision of Doom, Stoner and Blues Rock with a great vocalist. Awesome vid- the spot on description paired with your passion truly captured why this band was so special.
And the Circus leaves Town is right up there with Welcome to Sky Vally for me. Spaceship Landing, Size Queen, Phototropic, El Rodeo.... they all give me eargasms.
Something I love about Kyuss is that while they are more rock in style, their heaviness almost makes them sound like sludge metal
I am the same age as Josh, was in a punk/sludge band when I found Kyuss with Blues/Red Sun, and drew such wonderful inspiration knowing that THAT band existed. What a record! I still play it like it's brand new. I hope they reunite, but I'll keep taking QOTSA records too :)
They created something pretty timeless with those records. I imagine they'll still sound like they could be brand new in years to come!

As someone who has been a fan of the band for over 30 years, I didn’t have a lot of hope for this, as most Kyuss introductions/retrospectives seem to completely miss the point. But this was very well put. Good job.

Beautiful descriptions of the Kyuss sound - well done! I actually love the Wretch album even though they hadn't yet settled into their stoner rock sound. The instrumentation on Wretch is phenomenal for a bunch of teenagers! But yes their next 3 albums were more complex and ground breaking. I would say Green Machine is the closest they got to a hit. It's the only song of theirs I ever heard on the radio here in the US which is how I discovered the band.
Kyuss and Sleep are the two bands that make me think of the experience before the songs. So loud, so good. Was lucky enough to catch Queens Of The Stone Age this summer, so good! As a guy I can comfortably say Mr. Homme certainly oozes sex with his guitar tone alone. Great rundown of a great band.

Also yeah there has been other bands that have released groundbreaking albums at that age. Entombed comes to mind immediately with their album Left Hand Path. They made the biggest album in the entire Swedish death metal scene and none of them were above the age of 19 when they made it

Kyuss live at LA2 in London was the best gig i ever saw
I first heard Kyuss on a listening station in the mid-90s, and it was Sky Valley, and I didn't get it, and I regret it. It took years before I realized what I missed, and Kyuss is one of my ATF's.
Thanks for showing me Buffalo--I also went down the stoner rock rabbit hole after Kyuss, and here's what I unearthed:
Try John Garcia's other bands, Slo-Burn and MOST ESPECIALLY Unida, which only really has one studio album, "Coping with the Urban Coyote", but it's awesome. Also, their song "Left Us to Mold" is on a compilation disk (Wayne-Gro) and is currently my favorite song of all time, and I've been listening to music for about 40 years.
I am also a huge fan of desert/stoner rock band Fu Manchu, which is more fast-paced groovy 70s fun.
For deep dive classic albums, so glad you got Leaf Hound and Cactus, the latter of which I have been gobbling up since Christmas wishlist fulfillment. ;-)
Also try the band Yesterday's Children (akin to Leaf Hound) and if it wasn't obvious, you MUST grab Blue Cheer's first two albums "Vincebus Eruptum" and "OutsideInside". There's a demo of "Doctor Please" floating around that's the WOOMPH sound on bad recording equipment. Some brilliant songs on 'Houdini'. 'Honey Bucket' is probably my favourite.
Great vid, but they were not the creators of modern stoner rock. The honor goes to Monster Magnet's "Spine of God", which came out a year before "Blues for the Red Sun". They both had earlier releases of course, but neither became "big" (lol) until "Spine" and "Blues". I was seeing loads of shows in the late 80's and early 90's and buying all those albums and I can tell you that "Spine of God" was the one, especially with all the drug references & psychedelics...thus stoner rock.
But "Blues" was heavier and also influenced some later doom bands...so you'd have a good argument that they were the creators of stoner doom.
hey mate any chance you could cast your eye over the walking seeds, given your modus operandi is overlooked bands, cos I love them but can find next to nothing on them , but mate good video and when I think of desert music I think of captain beefheart ice cream for crow, out in the mojave, but gonna check out kyuss great stuff that

Ode to Io was released almost 20 yrs ago. Lowrider released Refractions early in 2020. Refractions for some, me included, was the album of the year from 2020. From the jamming drums on Red River to the organ adding to the jam on Ode to Ganymede.
For me Kyuss got better when Scott Reeder joined on WTSV
Kinda checked out after Josh kicked that woman and Garcia/Bjork tried stealing the name back. Kind of a shame.
