I went PDHS with these and played football with them. Parties were wild, good times back in the desert for sure. Josh, Brant, and Chris were phenomal ball players and could easily played at the collegiate level. I'm glad they followed their passion for music. I' found this video while listening to old songs we listened to before each game. Sorry for the rant. Just a trip down memory lane.
I've seen them together live in concert in Reggio Emilia (italy) sept '95, a HUGE wall of sound. That day Chris Cornell wasn't at his best, the KYUSS played louder than SG and literally blew-up the crowd. Great day that day...
I didn't know that was Kyuss last show together... Maybe Josh knew it, maybe this is the reason why at the end of the show he lowered his pants and showed for about 2/3 minutes his white butt to the public.....
Saw Kyuss April 3 1993 when they opened for metallica in melbourne. John Garcia stage dived and tried to get back on stage and had a huge punch on with security. Homme had to tap the security guys shoulders to say , " Hey buddy! Thats our singer!". Made a great impression on 15 year old me!
Metallica turned their volume down after the first Australian performance. They were only allowed to use one instead of two amps. (Or something like that) because they were they much cooler. Metallica just got jalouse by the audience response.
Upon my first listen to Welcome to Sky valley I recognized it had a very specific feel to it, something akin to a masterpiece forgotten by time due to mere chance. Interesting to know Kyuss effectively had that exact thing happen to it. It really sums up the truly unique and mystique passion this band burned out while it shone with brilliant life in some distant desert not to be seen until it was gone.
Josh Homme has been the soundtrack to my life. From Kyuss, QOTSA, Eagles of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures, Iggy Pop and Dessert Sessions to his production on Arctic Monkeys records I havent been able to escape this guy since my teens. I am now 43 yeras old and he is the musician I listen to the most. Kyuss are such an amazing band. This is a great look into one of my favourite ever bands and artists.
Kyuss with Danzig and White Zombie in Philly at TLA. Dec 16, 1992. All three bands in top form. I will never forget. Also remember leaving my broke down 1986 Chevette near the Spectrum. No clue what happened to it. But it rocked...
That was the best show ive ever seen. Saw them in a blizzard in Boston and White Zombie couldnt get there so Kyuss played all their songs and Danzig played 3 damn hours. 27 inches of snow by the next morning. So many ppl stranded in Worcester Mass, but it was the greatest show ever. Ive been a Kyuss fan since.
As an album it is by far their best. By far. As an album. No question. I cannot stand idiotic purists that seem to be listening to the phantasm of the "original" and "essential" idea of the band more than to the actual musical material. "And The Circus Leaves Town" never let's you down musically which cannot be said about any other record by KYUSS. (I bought all of their records on one day after being introduced to their music in around 1999. I totally loved their stuff from the first listening on.)
Agree "Blues for a red sun" is the best one, Circus is my second fav then Sky valley...Brant Bjork first album is one of my fav albums just such a mellow cruise vibe, second one was okay, but IMHO they start all just blending into one after that.
This band was a landmark in rock music...Goss was inventing a new style, stoner rock, and produced and played with the members of QOTSA and Kyuss...Kyuss was the second band ever noted as desert /stoner rock, and they were incredibly good in what they created...for me all their records are gems of sensitive heavyness and I love them all...just like the records of the Masters Of Reality!!! Each album had some crunchy bone breaker, and epic soundscaping , psychedelic trips through Palm Desert...its simply useless to compare them with their others, or with other bands, because they didn't wanted to repeat themselves...its so easy, a good band always to drift forwards in my opinion🤩🎵🎸🎹🏜️🏞️🏜️😎✌️
@Gene Bone Naaah, Goss was attracted by Homme's talents...he saw the big potential he has, in writing songs, playing instruments and was very fond of his ideas...it was, Goss that convinced Homme to change name of the band and join his studio, where was better conditions to produce, mix and records their material...they were friends as I know...i don't sum up one above the other, that's not my intention! But it's right what you say! JOSH WAS THE BOSS OF KYUSS...they hadn't exist without him...i just wonder why Garcia was singing most songs, because I tend to like Homme's voice more🤩🎸🌟😋😎🌄🏜️✊
@Gene Bone Ha ha ha, really...well,i guess so, Garcia went better with every year that passed, and took control over his voice...screamed less and sung more...i love the solo albums mostly and the acoustic one, where he plays so accurately unplugged, so rhythmically clever and straight...well,its the experience makes talented men become good shouters and axemen too...i agree with you...on their debut it's hearable...a classic, but I always thought, hm hm...for me as singer and son of a chamber tenor, I wished more chorus parts and another voice on that album, sorry Mr. Garcia, nothing against you, but it's matter of taste! That he later became near to Blue Cheer's singers voice...is very nice, the later stuff is far better if it's about singing😎🌟🎸🤩🏜️🌄🏜️🚀😉👏
Pro tip check out the documentaries such hocks such hounds (free here on TH-cam,) as well as desert age. It’s available on TH-cam for a price but you might be able to find it somewhere else. The first one is a great documentary on the evolution and proliferation of heavy underground music over the past 50 years. Includes bands like pentagram, Sir Lord Baltimore, Captain beyond, the obsessed, earthless, Sun0))), acid king, dead Meadow, sleep, fu Manchu, monster magnet, fatso Jetson, The second one focusing on the desert scene specifically. Also if you want something to blaze to check out yawning man. A major influence on Kyuss and widely excepted to be some of the originators of that desert rock scene. The music literally sounds like the desert. I recommend their debut album rock formations although everything they’ve done is great. The debut didn’t come out until 2006 because they were recording under a different name in the 90s making slightly different music but it’s totally bad ass. Also their original demos from 1986 when they first formed are available as well. Other projects to check out related to them would be dark tooth and counter and 10 East. Sorry I know this comment got long but I just love talking about music with people. Don’t know many people in real life who like this kind of shit. Enjoy.
I was lucky enough to see them on the Blues For The Red Sun tour with Brandt. They played to a packed crowd of 15 people in this huge venue in VA Beach...no one was there. If they could have played just 15 minutes away in Norfolk at a place called KIngs Head Inn they would have had a much better show with at least 70 to 100 people. Kyuss were virtually unknown back then on the east coast. It was a weird time for bands back then. It was all word of mouth.
@@longlive8850 Well, WTSV is basically one long track that has different movements. The writing, arranging, performances,....especially Reeder's bass guitar,...it's all top notch. It combines Metal, Psychedelic, Groove/Funk, and elements of Classic Metal & Rock. It's just my favorite of theirs, and frankly, I prefer it to the Nirvana-wannabe bands that were plentiful in the '90's. As a musical work, it really is an epic. That's just my opinion though. I understand different people prefer different things/sounds.
@@dmreeoogdaq I agree man. I love WTSV so much. I first heard it 1994 on cassette tape. I went to bed listening to that album every night for about 6 months and I have been listening to it regularly ever since. In fact I just listened to it again today. The way the album opens with Gardenia is just so huge and inviting and when the bass and drums kick in, man, that groove!!! I just love the groove, the warmth, the earthiness and also the psychedelic tones in it. It is a masterpiece. Apparently they had a lot of fun making that album and you can hear it. I was lucky to see them live once in April 1993 when they supported Metallica in Australia. It was Scott, John, Brant and Josh on stage. It was epic! It was life changing and I am forever grateful I got to see them live once.
I was in a SoCal thrash band from 88-91 and...to this day...I have no idea how but we completely missed out on Kyuss. I didn't start listening to them until waaaaay later. Bums me out to this day.
Great video. I was hoping Yawning man would get a mention though. They were widely excepted to be one of the originating bands of that desert rock scene along with Kyuss. So much so that Kyuss covered their song catamaran on the circus leaves town. Having said that I know this video isn’t about Yawning Man but you should seriously consider doing a video on them. Underground desert legends with a major influence on Kyuss.Their history is fascinating and their music is totally bad ass in an interstellar kind of way. Here’s a quote from Brant Bjork about watching them play at the generator parties.. “They were one of the first bands that I heard that surrendered to the environment and just let go of any kind of sonic, urban pursuits like punk,” he says. “They sounded like the desert.” And I’m here to tell you that they do sound like the desert. They wouldn’t release there debut album until 2006 but it and everything else they’ve put out is absolutely bad ass. The album is called rock formations. They released several subsequent albums as well as the demos they made back in 1986 and all of it is just gold. Also the guitar player Gary Arce has a couple of other side projects like 10 east and dark Tooth encounter that expand on that sound a little bit.
Absolutely! I heard their last album for the first time in '98, before finding out they had broken up (prison sucks). That album, to me, was like giving sight to a blind man
I was out there in Cali when this was going on. I prefer sky valley the most, but I will honestly say it's very hard to pick between sky valley ,.....and the circus leaves town. They might as well be a double album. Both of them are so good. And they have a slightly different field than blues for the red sun
@Gene Bone thank you for telling me but I already knew this. Back in the 1990's I used to order VHS bootlegs of live concert footage of Kyuss. And they weren't cheap either most of them were like fifty bucks
The first time I heard Kyuss I had bought some skater magazine (I don't remember what it was called, wasn't Thrasher, Big Bro or Transworld) that came with a free cassette that featured demos from various bands. Most of it was kinda shit except for Odyssey. The next day I bought WTSV and was hooked for life. I've always loved music but no other band makes me feel the way Kyuss does when I listen to it.
@Gene Bone Most of it yeah. John Garcia contributed more on this one as well, (somewhat filling the void left by Brant) co-writing about 5 tracks and Scott Reeder co-wrote 2. One Inch Man was written by solely Garcia and Reeder.
Sounds like what destroyed kyuss was Josh homme wanting to make cash money more than his band mates did? I think its fair to say homme was more business savvy thZn his band mates?
Disagree completely. Kyuss had already experienced a level of success, but Josh wanted to create something new and different. He didn't want to keep flogging the same 'ol shit, he wanted to create something new and beautiful.
@@petedogg47 Hence why he copyrighted the band and put himself in most songs despite not writing them. Homme wanted money and real fame, Kyuss enjoyed cult status but not mainstream popularity which he would later find out.
@@petedogg47 One Inch Man is Reeder's yet in the album it's both him and Homme despite writing the song in the ATR days, Brant has said Josh learned about the royalty thing in the Sky Valley days and tried to use it to the max; let's not forget the band was Brant's yet Homme copyrighted the name after kicking him out because Bjork was a self-professed studio rat, meaning he didn't like touring much.
“I don’t play for money or do things for the money” but I’ll start a lawsuit against my former bandmates for playing our songs together but not because I want the money. Right?
Don't think he did it for the money, first he makes a shitload of that with QOTSA and the other zillion projects that he does, and second he doesn't really come across as a greedy guy, he's more about protecting his art and the people that were involved in making it.
Ricardo Fernandes That's why is little speach about"i don't care for money"is from a recent past,i mean, its easy to give that speach when you already have money in your pocket. He seems as greedy as the rest of kyuss members and the continuous come an go of diferent musicians, almost since ever, says that he probably is a"little"control freak
Despite some of the mispronunciations, I thought this was a mostly correct, albeit brief, video history. As a fan since ‘92, looking back it’s clear that Brant’s departure was essentially the beginning of the end of the band. All due respect to Fredo, but not only was Brant a tremendous drummer, many of Kyuss’ best songs were either written, or co-written by him. Jalamanta is just another affirmation of his exceptional talent. I love Scott Reeder & Nick Oliveri, but they could’ve changed bassists several more times & kept it going, but losing Brant had the same effect as losing Josh would have. Then again, many of the most legendary bands are often ones that shine so bright that they end up burning out quickly. And if time has proven one thing for certain, it’s that Kyuss are goddamned legendary.
I might have missed it, and if I did I'll edit and apologize, but I can't believe you didn't mention Hermano when talking about Garcia's other bands. All 3 of their albums are excellent. Also, I have no idea why And the Circus Leaves Town is seen as an inferior album, IMO there aren't any bad songs on the album. Spaceship Landing is amazing and my favorite Kyuss song of all time, and if you listen through to the hidden track, Day One, that is a great end to that song.
Are you the guy from Summoning Salt? The video progression and ambiance is really similar to his, anyway, great video. I dont think there's enough info for a Colour Haze video, because well, they're just not as known, sadly, but if its possible, it would be amazing (if you made a Colour Haze video)
I have the most respect for what Brant have done. Yes, the others are good at what they do. There is just something more genuine about the works of Brant. He speaks more to one about issues and dilemma's.
@@jariza2606 I think those aprox 15 albums since the late 1990's, kind of speak for them self. Not to mention all the albums were he is involved and side projects as well. Yet here you are, saying that he has done nothing.
garcia ist still an underrated rock vocalist. he just had it. he even could have easily substitute soundgardens great cornell and it would have worked like a charme
Not a place I'd expect to hear Persona and Zero Escape music. As much as I love the music in both series, I find it very out-of-place in a video like this. Regardless, love Kyuss to death. Sky Valley is easily my second favourite album of all time.
we used to call it "desert rock" i have no idea how " :stoner rock" became popular. similar bands have no more drug influence than any other type of rock music. very strange.
As much as I enjoy Brant and John as solo artists...creative differences with the best songwriter of your scene...says more about y'all than it does Josh, and I love Kyuss as a band...it just seems silly to disagree with someone who is better at the job than you are...

I can’t imagine making a biography & releasing it w/o knowing how to properly pronounce the name of the most famous & integral subject I’m covering. 😬 Don’t get me wrong, I like this video (gave it a thumbs up) & I really don’t mean to be mean but it’s ‘Hom-Me’; not ‘Home’.
Wow... I just"proved" my drug theory firsthand. I actually saw KYUSS opening for White Zombie and Danzig, not Soundgarden,my coronavirus fevered brain remembered specifically the rather large, scary goth ladies pushing my frightened skinny tripping dude ass around like a RAG DOLL...haha.😂😂. I had seen Monster Magnet open for Soundgarden at that same menu, around the same time... perhaps therein lay that awkward confusion

@@petedogg47 Hence why he copyrighted the band and put himself in most songs despite not writing them. Homme wanted money and real fame, Kyuss enjoyed cult status but not mainstream popularity which he would later find out.
@@bearbearingston7696 Who told you he didn't write Kyuss songs?
@@petedogg47 One Inch Man is Reeder's yet in the album it's both him and Homme despite writing the song in the ATR days, Brant has said Josh learned about the royalty thing in the Sky Valley days and tried to use it to the max; let's not forget the band was Brant's yet Homme copyrighted the name after kicking him out because Bjork was a self-professed studio rat, meaning he didn't like touring much.
1:46 that’s my dog Thor guarding Unsound from skaters at the nudist colony.
What's the song that starts playing on the back at 9:50?
Thanks Wikapedia
Great review and documentary, the way you approach the story, your narrative, good job. 😉🌵
I love Kyuss music so much, I named my dog after them....
now that was a good call
David Tyson !
TBH I always thought Circus was by far their best album if just for the fact that Spaceship Landing was on it.
“I don’t play for money or do things for the money” but I’ll start a lawsuit against my former bandmates for playing our songs together but not because I want the money. Right?
I dont think he got money...he just made sure theyd change their name...unless, you know more
Also"i want my name in every song just in case"
Don't think he did it for the money, first he makes a shitload of that with QOTSA and the other zillion projects that he does, and second he doesn't really come across as a greedy guy, he's more about protecting his art and the people that were involved in making it.
Ricardo Fernandes That's why is little speach about"i don't care for money"is from a recent past,i mean, its easy to give that speach when you already have money in your pocket. He seems as greedy as the rest of kyuss members and the continuous come an go of diferent musicians, almost since ever, says that he probably is a"little"control freak
He was just cockblocking their money. Doucebag in the highest sense.
The Bottle is a great song, in fact if you dont mention its hermano i would say is Kyuss
Are you the guy from Summoning Salt?
The video progression and ambiance is really similar to his, anyway, great video.
I dont think there's enough info for a Colour Haze video, because well, they're just not as known, sadly, but if its possible, it would be amazing (if you made a Colour Haze video)
@15:06 .... can i get a poster out of it ?
Hail Alfredo!
One of the best bands
1990, generator at the Nude Bowl - Sons of Kyuss changed me forever.
I hope you do more videos!
Just bought four Kyuss albums...
Is Children of Bodom a sideways reference to Suns of Kyuss?
I have the most respect for what Brant have done. Yes, the others are good at what they do. There is just something more genuine about the works of Brant. He speaks more to one about issues and dilemma's.
He's done the best music after leaving Kyuss. Jalamanta and Che Sounds of Liberation both smoke anything Queens of the Stone Age ever did imo.
@@richardcrook2112 Yup. I love Brant Bjork. Awesomme music.
He has done nothing. His ego is huge, that's about it
@@jariza2606 I think those aprox 15 albums since the late 1990's, kind of speak for them self. Not to mention all the albums were he is involved and side projects as well.
Yet here you are, saying that he has done nothing.
@@brostenen and all of them suck
No mention of Reeder playing in Unida?
Sou fã do kyuss, é uma pena que não tem tradução em português
Godfathers of dessert sound!!!! 4 riders of Apocalypse!!!! Band next to TOOL change my music path forever!!!!! We are all Sons of Kyuss!
The intro music reminds me of Eddie Bravo’s Blackened Kill Symphony song.
No mention of the shine! single split with Wool?
This was brilliant ❤
Intro music is from Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Sega Saturn 🪐
sweet!
opera house 1994 toronto...epic show
Athreal music?
Ha
I saw Kyuss Lives in Sydney a few years back. It was gnarly.
saw em in perth! so much fun. 2 videos on my channel
The cover band? Cool
I believe Josh Homme resides in Palm Springs, California, not Los Angeles.
Who is Abigail Chavez?
As a Road Rash and QOTSA fan, I can't believe Josh Homme is from Palm Desert
good documentary... long live Kyuss, fok lawsuit, but new albums without Homme would not be same... now im enjoying John Garcia Band of gold
garcia ist still an underrated rock vocalist. he just had it. he even could have easily substitute soundgardens great cornell and it would have worked like a charme

Exactly how i feel about Kyuss ever since i discovered them!
Josh Home? Or Homme
He says it wrong. It's pronounced hom-me
S
Not a place I'd expect to hear Persona and Zero Escape music. As much as I love the music in both series, I find it very out-of-place in a video like this.
Regardless, love Kyuss to death. Sky Valley is easily my second favourite album of all time.
Yeah Josh
How is someone gonna make a story of Kyuss video and not know how to pronounce Homme
It's cool man I thought it was pronounced Kee-us
Great research! Thanks for this 🙏🏽
Gene Bone would you expand on that. What bits exactly are false?
💪
You just basically read the whole Kyuss Wikipedia in a video and disguising it by just saying something with your own style. big bruh
we used to call it "desert rock" i have no idea how " :stoner rock" became popular. similar bands have no more drug influence than any other type of rock music. very strange.
Nick with hair will always be funny to me, love that guy to death 🖤
As much as I enjoy Brant and John as solo artists...creative differences with the best songwriter of your scene...says more about y'all than it does Josh, and I love Kyuss as a band...it just seems silly to disagree with someone who is better at the job than you are...
Homme is pronounced "Tommy". An important detail to get right.
I can’t imagine making a biography & releasing it w/o knowing how to properly pronounce the name of the most famous & integral subject I’m covering. 😬
Don’t get me wrong, I like this video (gave it a thumbs up) & I really don’t mean to be mean but it’s ‘Hom-Me’; not ‘Home’.
Do you want a cookie?
Nice mini doc but too bad they couldnt use their music in it.
a lot of legal battles for desert stoners. Lucrative
It's Josh Haw-Me not Home
Always preferred Kyuss to Queens
Pongan subtitulos en español
Yeah
being fan on gendre i had to turn off this video
you cant even pronounce the names of ones you make this about
pretty well done! keep up the good work
Isn’t alcohol and drugs what make it a party?
It’s complicated
Saw them open for White Zombie and Soundgarden in Portland Oregon,1992..Good show; I think cuz:drugs...why lie
I had seen Monster Magnet open for Soundgarden at that same menu, around the same time... perhaps therein lay that awkward confusion
nice
APONE: "ABSOLUTELY BAD-AZZZ"
C'mon man,...Josh "Home" = "Hommie", Nick "Oleevary" = "Olive ary", Brant "Beeyork" = "Byork" SMH
420 likes... im sorry echoes of the imortalls. youve reached your max likes for this video
Tells you nothing you wouldn't know if you look kyuss up on wiki.
Homme rhymes with mommy
Like.......you spent hours making this.........you couldn't spend 5 minutes to figure out how to properly pronounce Josh Homme's last name? Sheesh!
S”ounds like sabbath? Josh has never fuckin heard em!”
