Years later after posting, I realise the error I made about not referencing Dune as inspiration for the album. Apologies for the lack of including Dune as an influence to Dopesmoker. I appreciate the feedback from y'all, and despite that one error, I hope you guys enjoyed the video!
To me, the cover art is much less Star Wars and FAR MORE Dune inspired. And considering that the Spice, a psychoactive drug that also enables space travel and serves as a form of currency among traders, is one of the key plot mcguffins of the entire Dune story, it feels like Dune is far more likely to be have been an influence on the album's artwork and story than Star Wars. The wanderers outfits on the cover art are also highly reminiscent of the Fremen's stillsuits in my eyes at least.
Sitting down and listening to Dopesmoker in its entirety, while as ripped as humanly possible, is the pilgrimage to mecca that every stoner/doom fan must complete.
It gets better every time. The first time I tried I couldn't get to the end, then I had to crunch study one night and all I wanted to hear was dopesmoker on repeat for like 6 hours.
Such a fantastic video, I've been obsessed with it for years (going through a Dopesmoker period right now) and it's so lovely to see someone not treat it as an extended stoner jam session but the intricate and meticulously crafted doom symphony it really is.
Top quality research, well presented . Have been a Sleep nerd for over a decade and you unearthed some stuff I did not know about. To me, the charts and different names of the parts were like a rosetta stone or getting a whole new gospel from the dead sea scrolls translated. Praise Iommi and many thanks.
I noticed around the 2:10 mark, I say 2003, 2012 and “2019” instead of “1999” when talking about when Dopesmoker/Jerusalem was released 😂😂😂 Goddamn it, Daydream! Stop screwing up, you stupid muppet!
I've listened to all of the different iterations of Dopesmoker, mostly the latest magnificent remaster, probably a total of fifty times, and I'm really pleased to see Hakius getting credit in this video - after a dozen or so times I realized how drum centric this track is, how intricate it is, and how balanced the entire composition is between the three instruments. This is a great dive into it, thanks!
I fall asleep listening to Dopesmoker. Im not saying that its boring!!! Im saying that literally, I put it on and I ride it all the way to the land of nod
Great video! One small critique though, every time you point to the land ship and refer to it as the caravan I think you're using the British definition of a moving home/trailer where the historical definition would have the entire group being the caravan. The historical definition is a group of people, especially traders or pilgrims, traveling together across a desert in Asia or North Africa or any large group of people, typically with vehicles or animals, traveling together in single file.
The Star Wars comparison is an insult because the design is clearly derived from Dune. This becomes even clearer when you listen to later songs of them like Giza Butler.
My nana loves this album. I put it on in the car while driving her home once. My intention was to annoy her, but she declared "THIS IS FUCKIN AWESOME!"
Sleep was a great find. I'm going to smoke some fine marijuana just now and really get deep into this band that take themselves serious but not too much.
I never connected the Weedians to Tatoine. Frigging hilarious. Good story telling man. I hope someone interviews Billy, Al, Chris, and Matt for a 90 minute movie at some point.
great video. I love the sleep band and the dopesmoker song. Thank you very much for this wonderful documentary. I am a marijuana smoker and Hasshesian. And listen to that song when I go high on fire. is amazing. It helps me get into a state of absolute concentration, which is great for sculpting or painting. hopefully sleep will continue releasing new songs and touring around the world. Salutations to the weedians!! and dopesmokers!!
Jerusalem was actually (semi officially) released by the band themselves in 1998 with the Arik Roper artwork in an edition of 1000 copies. The Rise Above 1999 release was exactly the same version (but with different artwork) & was fully sanctioned by the band.
The Frank Zappa interview where he talks about the cigar chomping guys in the 60s comes to mind. Like just let artists do stuff lol. They know what’s cool. The middle men ruined the music industry for the most part. Anyway, my mom bought me a copy of Dopesmoker when I was like 15 because she’s awesome haha.
dune. the psychadelic ritualistic vibe, the desert planet and middle eastern aesthetic is close to spice etc in the dune books would bet that was a inspiration fs
As far as that cover goes (if I recall correctly) the artist said he was inspired by Dune, just replace the spice with weed. There's even an ornithopter off in the background.
In the analysis of the concept I'm really surprised you didn't say Dune, weed/spice, weedians/fremen, Arrakis also has two moons, and Dune has a stronger religious theme than Star Wars
Yeastarday i listened to this, then the most ridiculously ueavy album ive ever heard, and then 3 slam metal albums in a row. Then i listened to hot to go by chappell roan 💀
I would have went more with a Dune style universe, but Tatooine was a ripoff of Arrakis. It reminds me more of the Fremen and the Stillsuits, Dune has more of a psychedelic and religious tone than star wars as well
the music industry destroyed a record meant to change the entire landscape of metal.....the way BLack Sabbath changed the landscape of metal.....which was seeded by jimi hendrix

My car only has a CD player, no aux, I’ve had my old dopesmoker CD in there for a year and a half, it just plays in a loop...
Hahahaha. You're the best.
Yes!!!!! Great driving music for sure
Dude you must get high off of the secondhand smoke coming from that cd..

It's a mix of both Dune and the Bible, and Dune is already biblically inspired down to the protagonist's name
Also Mob Rules cover.
100% correct. Down to the stillsuits.
@@slasherdope8065 Never connected the two.... However now im prayin your right cause that is excellent and i cannot now unsee it
Star Wars is a clear insult in this context

Dopesmoker is face value to their lyrics. That being said, the lyrics are an art piece in and of themselves.
Such a fantastic video, I've been obsessed with it for years (going through a Dopesmoker period right now) and it's so lovely to see someone not treat it as an extended stoner jam session but the intricate and meticulously crafted doom symphony it really is.
Actually Cisneros had DUNE in mind. Not Star Wars

Watching Matt Pike's rig rundown right before this video really hammered home just how insanely huge his guitar tone is. Massive
I honestly don’t know how this vid only has 1k views, it deserves way more
Appreciate the words, man!

this is one of the most comprehensive videos i've ever seen talking about the album specifically! thank you so much
also the intro was great 😂

Follow the smoke to the riff filled land
My nana loves this album. I put it on in the car while driving her home once. My intention was to annoy her, but she declared "THIS IS FUCKIN AWESOME!"

I was at that Sleep show you got the poster for! Fuck yeah!

Good video, odd choice to wear your sister's shirt
I would have went more with a Dune style universe, but Tatooine was a ripoff of Arrakis. It reminds me more of the Fremen and the Stillsuits, Dune has more of a psychedelic and religious tone than star wars as well
ummm
the music industry destroyed a record meant to change the entire landscape of metal.....the way BLack Sabbath changed the landscape of metal.....which was seeded by jimi hendrix
