This is about Funimations insistence on using lazy Noise Removal to destroy the film grain and lose details on the footage, their lack of experienced staff who know how to properly preserve this footage.
WHO WANTS LAZY BLURRY FILTERED SHIT?
All the new blog post by Funimation proves is that their Untouched Before comparison shots look far better than what they do to it post remastering. I would drop DOUBLE the money if we got the Raw footage with grain as opposed to what they are trying to RIP you off with.
Funimation do the right thing listen to what the hardcore fans want!

Their Ideology is probably clean filtered washed anime is like a clean car, clean underwear, might simply be targeted to Highly Sanitized audiences, this is like Vegan Dbz, maybe the head chief is in this mindset.
why does the film have to look old for you guys to like it?..i enjoy the remaster orange bricks cause it looks clean...I just occasionally hate the cropping on big long closeup portions of the hair or screen image when a fight is in movement cause its stretched to 16:9 when it originally was 4:3 so thats expected sometimes
@@razkable it's not about looking old, it's about it looking as intended. Compare it to an old music recording that already sounded great, but for new releases gets put through remastered filters to boost bass etc. but gets overdone and becomes obnoxious. This is exactly what's happening here but with film quality, grain and color.

That's why I think they should just release it like Discotek does their old stuff. Release in SD on BD (SD Blu-Ray) with HD audio remaster. The video looks better because it's not compressed and fits around 50 episodes a disc without any compression on the video. This reduces costs for them and the fans and makes for a simply better release. Of course, it will be better with the original Toei masters rather than their 3rd generation S-VHS copy.

Can’t Funimation just give us a proper release in 4:3 with grain, the three audio options and if possible if they can get the original broadcast audio back, Japanese dub with the American score? Or just rerelease the Dragon Boxes again either for dvd or blu ray but also add the American score in addition (I know the D-boxes are mainly towards the Japanese fans but still there should at least be some type of option to have both soundtracks). Or continue the Damn level sets, those sets were Amazing, and yet they canceled it. Just stop giving us Crappy releases and remaster the show right!

I wasn't going to reserve this release already, but knowing it's more zoomed in than the dragon boxes, I'm going to stick with those for my definitive viewing pleasure until either Funimation gets their shit together and makes a competent home release, or Toei strips them of their rights to Dragon Ball and does it themselves.
I'm telling you Toei would be making so much money here in the West if they handled everything.

It's upto Toei Animation, and they are funny with giving out licences for the Dragon boxes.

Funimation has a lot to apologize for. Not only with the poor treatment of the source material, but by the actions of their voice actors with regards to Vic as well as cancelling their appearance at Kamehacon, disappointing their fans in the process #IStandWithVic.

@@PokemonBoy-de4jd there are few English movies on LaserDisc but the majority of the show I think was released on LaserDisc in Japan but they're very hard to find. Just Googling Dragon Ball Z LaserDisc and you'll find Dragon Ball GT volume 18.

we in germany got only a non uncut version with picture quality from tv casts, 500euro... the whole dragonball distribution rights are a fucking mess.

The U.K. releases are next to non-existent for DBZ, we’ve got the Orange Bricks & this new 30th Anniversary set (due to be released November 25th). I mean I work in film preservation and restoration so I’m definitely not getting the set. Frankly it’s an insult.

I mean it’s really peoples opinions at this point on whether to get it or not. However it is a gamble if the trailer is an indication of what the actual footage will be like or will be not the final product. I personally myself am more concerned about having the Bruce Faulconer score with it. As that how I wanted watch my DBZ. At the end of the day it’s up to the fans to decide whether they want the quality or the crop quality. As of right now they’re over 2600 people that have committed already with reservations.
Yes it is totally upto us to decide if we support this release and future releases like this. I do hope we get a good Remaster, worst case scenario I hope toei in Japan are working in a real Remaster.

And to top it all off we don't even know how's they're planning to go about audio remastering.
Digitise the raw footage and get the nerds/fans to do the restoration. It does wonders for old Doctor Who episodes.
And the Dragon Boxes still aren't perfect. It's free of damage/scratches, it's 4:3, it doesn't have overblown brightness, and (most importantly) it doesn't have DNR. This is all great, but the colors are wrong: lacks true purple (Piccolo's wardrobe), orange is too red, earth sky should be blue but is green, and the worst, for me, is the non-white pink skin. Also, even if the colors were accurate, I think we may be overlooking a fundamental problem, too: 480i is incredibly dated, so it still wouldn't be definitive. At the very least, FUNImation should re-release these dvd's with a simple color correction pass I've seen DBZ forum's doing.

The animation trailer is a mix of old footage from the blu rays in 4:3, some Levels Sets, etc you actually though they had started working on the new set of course not without money no way.
It also does not help that they do not mention if the original language comes, if there are subtitles or if they have the preview of the next episode. They ask for money, but they do not offer competent information.

The only home releases I own are EVERY SINGLE DRAGON BALL,Z,AND SUPER MOVIE IN EXISTENCE (no GT movies though)
Even THAT is hard with the manga given Viz keeps changing their mind to release the series censored or uncensored, different translation choices and including colour pages or greyscale depending on the edition printed.

DBZimran that’s just the subject month that they have they originally had the super Broly movie release on December and then later changed it to April so it could be subject to change if and when the project gets greenlighted.
Why aren't the Individual DVD's considered competent? I think they look really good.
Over saturation of colors the blacks in the show are crushed too. Look it up the way funimation touches up the show loses details which would be there without them screwing around with it.
@Thomas Meehan What exactly is silly about wanting a competent, quality product? The Episode of Bardock remaster looks gorgeous and there's no reason not to have the same level of quality from a ($350!) 30th anniversary special edition boxset, something which is heavily marketed towards a hardcore audience. If you think the previous releases are fine, great. I can watch those releases too. Doesn't change the fact that Funimation has consistently delivered an inferior product to the English audience for over a decade, with awful DNR that destroyed the original animation's colour scheme, ruined the film grain and blurred away fine details in the art. It's a fact, these home releases are poor products.
What is the point of buying this boxset if it's literally just a (badly) cropped 4:3 of previous releases, which were (already) inferior to past releases that were cancelled. Not only are they trying to market this set as a "once in a lifetime" product, they are expecting the fans to crowdfund it's production when they haven't even shown a hint of actively preserving the original product. Funimation expect us to gamble $350 on this, so of course people are going to complain when we don't even get a proof of concept of the product that we want.
@@DBZimran It really isn't oversaturated. They weren't applying filters. It's the Digibeta masters that are being used, causing it to look like it's more saturated. The same goes for the Ultimate Uncut ones. There is also a clear difference in colors between the Pioneer, Madman and Funimation releases, so with the Single DVD releases being so all over the place, it would've been nice if you covered them. The Levels also have crushed blacks, but crushed blacks aren't really a big deal at all, especially considering it gets much less worse as the series goes on from what i've noticed. The grain in the original releases is still there, as well as being in 4:3 and with no extreme zooming in.

From what I hear, the encoding on those original DVDs is extremely poor, with massive amounts of compression artifacts. This is especially noticable in the final battle between Gohan and Cell, where there's so much macroblocking going on that it's hard to even see what's happening.
That, and everything prior to the "Captain Ginyu Saga", as they call it, is dub-only and censored.
@@Gameplayer-vm5ml Try watching Toei's own remasters on the movies and then watch the Funimation's trailer again, there is plenty wrong with that footage. You can see the downgrade in quality on Funi's part.

No there Is not. Dragon ball z has only been released in Japan once and that was in 2003.

I have heard that the american versions are for the most part incompetent compared to the Japanese, but I watch sub anyway. The only good quality Japanese release and only Japanese release ever of Dragon Ball z is the Dragon Box sets in 2 big sets, they have no subs. They are out of print and now cost a lot of money to buy second hand.
Funimation re-released them on 7 sets for American fans with subs on 2009 they are also out of print.
Even if you buy the single dvds with three episodes or four episodes the first 53 episodes are so edited and only in ocean dub the episodes were so edited that instead of the first 67 episodes it's cut down to 53 episodes.

Cuz it's the one where they upscaled everything yeah that one wasn't crash because of the upscaling though it was trash because they basically the same time with the upscaling graphics they also Nerfed some of the Epic scenes I watched the scene where Goku turn Super Saiyan for the first time on TH-cam remastered and they cut a lot of it out that made it Epic if they had it copied it like they did the original seed and upscaled it it would have been 10 billion times better most likely

They should have corrected these flaws from the orange bricks. The outcry was crazy in 2007, they still go for the cheap route.
I agree that funimation automates their process a little too much. But it’s not like their source materials aren’t in pristine condition or are the best available. Aren’t they like second or third generation or some shit? Also, how are you going to compare footage from an hd release to one in sd? You do know that both codecs do not retain the same amount of information? It’s not a fair comparison. What people should be advocating for is for funimation to acquire better source materials. Rather than a more “faithful” restoration using less than ideal source.

This refers to the box art on the actual packaging. Not the footage that will be on the discs.
Preserving aspect ratio I'm cool with, you lose image if you crop. The idea that the grain is intentional is nonsense. I like clear crisp picture, I personally can do without the grain.
The grain is not intentional and there are better ways to remove it, but Funigaytion chose the cheaper and worst of all (DNR)

It may as well be worse with terrible colours, bleached look and cropping despite being in 4 by 3. Terrible release in my opinion if this is what it is. Watch the video for the specifics of what is wrong with It.
what about the vhs releases
They are part of the individual releases the first ones that I mentioned. The VHS releases fall under that category.
I really just want all of dragon ball z with all the lit animations that super has in the last episodes we have or with the same animation as dragon ball super broly they should be able to do this they have made over 4 billion dollars

Dale Kelly (sometimes credited as Dale D. Kelly or Kelly Dale) is a voice actor, part of the original Funimation cast for Dragon Ball Z. He played the role of Captain Ginyu, and was also the narrator for episodes 68-194 (54-179 edited).
Dale Kelly left FUNimation in 2001, and Brice Armstrong replaced him as Captain Ginyu for the video games and episodes 68-74 remastered (54-60 edited). Kyle Hebert replaced Kelly as the narrator for 195-291 (180-276 edited), movies, and episodes 1-67 remastered (On DVD, Hebert's narration was originally heard starting with episode 172 [157 edited]). Kyle also re-recorded Kelly's narration in the remaining episodes and specials for the season boxed sets. Although Kelly's voice has been removed from the Dragon Ball series, certain scenes with Captain Ginyu laughing or screaming retain his voice in the remastered sets. Dale was also a prominent figure in the music department for Dragon Ball Z, as he is known for producing the soundtracks for the two Dragon Ball Z specials.
What about sound quality?
Late reply but: the problem with that is that Dragonball Z is so old now that the original sound has a slight hiss to it. The sound can't get better in thw home video releases. What FUNi can do is get the original broadcast VHS tapes from fans who have them (they have actual good sound quality) and use them instead of the audio they have. I really hope this cleared it up for you.
@@Mr5lapp i own the level sets(wish they continued them) and what Funi did with those was equalize the Japanese audio to make it more clear, it isn't perfect but so much better than the orange bricks and blu-ray season sets

I am kinda 50/50 on the whole grain removal. There are clear better visuals with alot of the scenes with grain removal but I will admit there is a few scenes where grain removal will just make you cringe and ask what even went wrong there. Cropping however is just simply wrong and evil.
The grain removal is extreme, i agree some grain removal is good but that's to a small extent where it actually does not ruin the footage. Funimation just has no idea what they are doing. You have people in the remastering industry saying if they did half the shit Funimation are doing they would be fired lol
@@DBZimran If they Didnt use a process to remove the noise it would probably look way better but Funi is pretty lazy I do have to say though these 30th anniversary releases are better than most of the other release exceptions being the Dragonboxes I honestly don't have too many complaints the colors look alright to me better than the Dragonbox colors they are somewhat oversaturated but the Dragonboxes have a problem with the deterioration of the masters and the damn Colors are still not right the only thing that angers me is the Dnr and Fake Grain and the over cropping but they have even less cropping than the Funi Singles overall I dont think that it's a terrible release
