Thanks so much for watching! This took me 7 months to research & finish. Thanks to MJxTV and Frozen Particle for helping edit. Remember, this is NOT about Z vs Kai- its just the STORY of what it is and why it exists and what happened.
Raiden I grew up on the original dbz, but kai has a way better dialogue, graphics and cuts all the non cannon plot hole filler, like Frieza watching Goku vs buy in hell. But I love Bruce falcouner, even tho sometimes the scene should be quite and his music doesn’t fit. For example gohan killing cell in dbz is perfect, Goku ssj3, vegeta turning Ssj for the first time is so perfect with Bruce
The Nicktoons version of DBZ Kai was actually the thing that got me into Dragon Ball. I remember when I was younger me and my brothers would watch DBZ Kai before we went to school.
I remember getting into Anime through watching Dragon Ball Z Kai on 4kids, so yes it did succeed in bringing in a new generation of friends to the Dragon Ball franchise.
I used to be a U.S Broadcast/Bruce Faulconer die hard fan that hated Kai. Mainly because they changed some of the actors, the music and cut out some of my favorite filler episodes. I’ve changed my mind after watching most of it with my kids. The line delivery and quality is much better. And the Japanese music has grown on me. Plus it has singlehandedly created a brand new generation of Dragon Ball Fans. Including my sons. I still love the original. Flaws and all. But now I love Kai as well.
@TheErikwithaK Its not bad, but not great either... A little too forgetable for me. It sounds very similar to the first One Piece opening :S:S All of this is a matter of personal taste, but I think in the case of the opening is safe to say the original is, objectively, much, MUCH better.
What can I say, Kai is my favorite version. Straight to the point, easy to watch, and the voice acting is on point. As a bonus, this is my first ever anime to see on cable tv, thanks to Nick toons.
So you haven't really watched the original, before or after (though before would be better). That's the reason 😂 or not, I dunno, I'm watching DBZ for the first time in my life
Chris Ayres’s performance as Freeza was what really pulled me in to this show. He was amazing. His performance really chilled me to the core with fear. RIP, Chris Ayres. You were truly Lord Freeza.
@@darnis6497 I don't agree. Most people who dislike the first English voice for Freeza seem to have an issue with an alien sounding like an alien. The new Freeza sounds like a silly English dude who spilled some tea.
When I didn't have to sit through the garlic junior saga and the fake namek saga I was so happy. I hated those. Though I do miss other world tournament. That one was good.
@@NativS2002 i wouldn't skip ANY of the original dragon ball? Its already 140 episodes shorter then Z and its all good filler .and it wasnt really filler like it was in Z .it was all entertaining and fun

pakimonsa it’s not that censored. Some small scenes of gore, baby dick, and characters flipping the bird are censored. Most of the violence and blood is left in.
Trevor Webb same bro I remember just turning the tv on before going to school &’ just seeing dbz kai for the first time during the frieza saga. I didn’t know what it was but for some reason I couldn’t stop watching it &’ ever since then I would watch it before school &’ when I got home from school
Kai was actually my first exposure to Dragon Ball, so I invalue it for giving a younger generation like myself a chance to enjoy these lovable characters.
Dragon Ball Z Kai did it's job alright, I got into the series by watching Kai when it was on Nicktoons and I got hooked watching the Frieza and Cell Saga.
Jaden Dobbs wait do you watch on demand? Because if so, the episodes stopped coming through, and coincidently this started 2 episodes before the cell games. It stopped at s4 ep7, this happening with you or is it just me?
I remember I hated Kai because it was different. Then I saw Geekdoms video about the 5 misconceptions then I watched it then I enjoyed it. Now I watch Kai over the original. I never gave Kai a chance.
@@ko-chanTHEBULLY I'll also note I didnt know anything about how it skipped filler because I didn't know what filler was for anime or anything. I had always wanted to watch the whole series again but couldn't because of the fake namek arc. You know what I am saying? I was blown away how much faster it took Goku to get to King Kais haha
How did you feel about the music change? I always felt some scenes really lacked good music, especially a scene such as Cell vs Gohan in their final Kamehameha, or Vegetas Final flash. Just so epic.
i used to watch dbzkai as it was still releasing, the show was still in the saiyan saga when my dad found out I liked and since he liked watched dragon ball Z when he was younger he decided to get the orange bricks so we could watch all of dbz instead of having to wait for it to air. DBZ kai started it but I still ended up with DBZ being the main show of my childhood.
@The Fantom Convoy Well I understand that. The point I'm trying to poke at is that his portrayal of the soundtrack should be respected regardless of stealing other projects.
Kai was on TV as soon as my brother and I got off the bus. We watched the whole series that way. Now I own it all on DVD. Kai made me a fan! What a theme song too
I remember when Kai first aired on Nicktoons, I was playing with toys on my bed and started watching it when I heard Raditz's voice. Because the first Budokai game is what introduced me to the series (as well as being an avid anime watcher as a toddler for some odd reason). I had a messed up disc from overuse so it would never go past Goku training for Namek so believe me I was very familiar with the Saiyan saga. I was like "hey I know what's going on here." Needless to say without Kai, my interest in Dragon Ball would never have been the same I believe.
A lot of people associate Kai with the version that aired on Nicktoons; they think THAT is Kai as opposed to it being a heavily censored version of Kai. Don't even get me started on the 4Kids version lol
I'm in the minority but I still prefer the NickToons version of Kai. It was slightly censored but not that badly other than language and a couple other things. A lot of it has to do with the theme song. Because.. I only like that version. The other singers' versions are not very good to me. Just my opinion/taste.
This is the type of content that keeps me coming back! I know this style couldn't be a regular upload but I appreciate the effort when you do put one together.
I'm a original z fan all the way and the filler episodes I didn't mind cause being older now I just need something to watch when I'm bored kai is good for whoever likes it so go for gold
Nawar Joud, you know what I’m annoyed about, the people that liked your comment would complain if you called anyone or anything else a queer, also who tf uses that term anymore, it’s 2020 people don’t care if you see them as a furry or a toaster..
I'm gonna say I love Colleen Clinkinbeard, I love her as Momo Yaoyorozu and Monkey D. Luffy, however while I think she fits Gohan pretty well, I found it hard to not hear Luffy in her voice
I grew up on the original DBZ dub. But over the last couple years I have really come to love and respect Kai. Dub is much better, visually its the best DBZ remaster by a mile so far. And it moves at a much better pace. If you are sceptical give it a try.
4kids version of dbz kai was a wrong version of the dbz kai English dub produced so you can ditch that and watch the uncut version of that instead. Some thoughts there.
OsZeek Fortnite Personal preferences. Kai is overall better than the Z dub and Remastered but, removing a few great voice actors and a lot of great moments from the remastered was a mistake. Not to mention, they could have atleast made a separate version of Kai with Bruce Faulconer dub.
Garbage Disposal Freeza and Kid Gohan were much better fits for their character, and the new Bulma VA gave a better performance. And Faulconer and Funi had a falling out so there was no way his music was going to be in Kai. The Japanese is better anyways.
I remember once my tutor came over but I requested to wait until goku unleashes his spirit bomb on Frieza ... The episode finished and it didn’t happen😂 Ah so nostalgic
I had always played the Dragon Ball Z games growing up and was never old enough to retain story elements of the show, so when I had saw the advertising for Kai I got super excited and watch every episode with my sister. I never knew why I stopped watching it, I just knew that I had stopped before the Buu Saga. Thanks to this video though, I found out that I didn’t miss it. :)

I personally love Kai. In France, Dragon Ball was being broadcasted pretty closely to Japan's airing. Thus, in the 90's, it suffered from a lot of bad localisation changes, like Guerriers de l'espace (Saiyans), Petit Cœur (Piccolo), Force Suprême/Magique (Kamehameha) and many others wich Kai luckily got rid off. It did help that Toei themselves produced the French version of Kai. 👍
We over here in Germany had French Dragon Ball games and I always wondered about the weird naming (Petit Coeur for example :D). Nevertheless: the German version is based off of the French version so we had the same censorships.^^
I really wish they would make a Kai version of original Dragon Ball, so we could get a shortened, easier to watch version of it. Don't get me wrong I love original Dragon Ball as it is, but during rewatches sometimes it's pretty hard to make it through the Red Ribbon Army and Baba arcs and filler episodes. Also there's an entire generation of fans that seems to have skipped out the adventures of Son Goku as a child, and they're really missing out on the story and amazing action in the Tournaments! Would also be awesome to hear the Japanese and English new voice recordings for the characters as children! It's rough to think an entire generation of fans only knows Yamcha as a complete meme and Tenshinhan for getting owned by Nappa and having the worst ToP episode. Come on Toei, make it happen! BTW, amazing work on this video per usual Geekdom!
I agree that the Original DB Series should've also reach New Audiences but I wouldn't consider a "Kai Version" of it I think it should be Reanimated & be 90% Accurate to the Manga.
DBZ is more popular than the orginal DB, it's all about the money. They knew when people hear Dragon Ball, the first they think of is DBZ, then the orginal Dragon Ball, if at all. DBZ is where the money is.
+Master Baiter That's the biggest problem I've had with Newcomers & the Fanbase in general. It's all about DBZ, the Original DB series is literally the beginning of Dragon Ball where a sense of Magical Adventure is at the very core. I love Dragon Ball in general but it seems like the Original DB series isn't that important to some 'Fans.'
I personally love Kai! It took out a lot of filler, updated the animation, gave a much better English Dub from the in house cast, and it was incredibly fast paced! It got me into DBZ watching this on NickToons as a kid to watching the Final Chapters alongside Super on Toonami years later! My girlfriend is being introduced through Kai and she loves it despite only being on Episode 17! It's also the only good worldwide Blu Ray release of the franchise (outside of Super which is also a pretty good home release) Your vids are both informative and fasinating! Keep up the great work!
I hate this.. it had a better dub. No it didn't, not in the slightest. The original is SO MUCH better!! I understand this is Generation bias but Z is on a whole other level. DBZ is supposed to be Gritty and intense & Kai don't hit as hard.
@@JRigby90 DBZ is supposed to be an animated version of a story written and drawn by Akira Toriyama, known as Dragon Ball (manga). DBZ is not supposed to be anything else but that. Looking at the Dubs, it is important to know that the older dubs actually tend to be very inaccurate to the original story of Dragon Ball. This is based in fact, not opinion)
@@mkhanman12345 I grew up with old dub. it's not good. you're own bias is showing. DBZ had a truly terrible dub with poor acting, shitty replacement score and completely different scripts from the original Japanese. There was nothing good about it and Chris Sabat and Sean even agree
Great Video! Thank You for providing the proper context to when DBZ originally aired in Japan compared to when KAI later aired.. Seems to be a point many have missed.
I grew up watching Kai. This is the definitive Dragon Ball anime in my head. I went back and watched the original anime of DBZ and I loved it but Kai will always be what I think of when I think a Dragon Ball. I still think to this day that this is one of the best dubs ever made as well.

I was so sad when I got Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD and realized that the soundtrack was completely different. Great video by the way, I never understood why people hated Kai despite me watching both the original Dragon Ball Z English dub and Kai when they both came out here.
For me, the only reason it was hard for me to watch the dub of kai was Gohan’s change of voice actor. It was soo much of a change for me that I couldn’t ignore it. I had to force myself to watch it and eventually I didn’t mind anymore but I remember the unnecessary anger it had brought me 😂
i loved a lot of the original 90's English dub voices but i hated a lot of the English rewrites and edits, like Goku doing the super hero speech to Freeza
I can’t believe I watched a 30 minute vid about Kai lol I always enjoyed the dub more but was always kinda upset the filler can’t be watched in a better dub 😂
THIS IS THE ONE. This is what got me introduced to Dragonball as a whole. I actually remember watching the first 3 episodes on what I think was Toonami.
Kai was a great way for me to relive Dragon Ball Z, and I absolutely adore the new dialogue and fast paced action sequences. It felt like I was right in the middle of everything as it was going down. I will admit that I wasn't too happy about some of the bits of dialogue from The Final Chapters, especially when it came to some of Majin Vegeta's lines. He was definitely more epic back in Z. Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed Kai, and I continue to enjoy rewatching it. Shout out to Sean Schemmel, Chris Sabat, and Chris Ayers. They rock!
Lol. The cell games photo at 22:31 was made by me. It was uploaded to my deviant art way back when. And I’ve seen it all over. At this point I don’t care. But it’s crazy seeing it in videos or Instagram posts now when. I drew it back in 2013
To be honest as a Casual Dagon ball fan, DBZ Kai actually got me back into the Fandom and other anime fanchises. Yes they're some filler but thats okay. In the beginning you can see some changes (Sayian, and Frieza arcs) but just a little. Still the Buu cell and the android saga are still one of my favorites.
When I was a kid, my Dad showed me Dragon Ball, then we moved on to Dragon Ball Z... I loved it. The characters were memorable, the action was great, and Bruce Falconer's score (sorry Japanese ost fans) just brought out how powerful transformations/moments like Goku going Super Saiyan, Gohan going Super Saiyan 2, and Goku's Super Saiyan 3 transformation was. I was in middle school when Kai came out, and at first I was nervous... could Kai stack up to how awesome Z was? So I watched it where ever I could... I saw it on both Nicktoons and Toonzai, but thought something was off... so my dad and I decided to rent the blu rays from a store called Hastings. I was blown away with how good Kai's dub was and I was kinda sad when I heard they weren't going to finish with the Buu saga. Years later, Kai Final Chapters comes out and it was really good (though I didn't like the Super Saiyan 3 music they used... UNTIL Super used it for Blue Vegito... I felt it sounded better there). I am pretty happy that Kai is a complete package now. Honestly, I could watch either Z or Kai. The Japanese ost has grown on me (though some scenes I prefer with Falconer's score like Goku going SSJ for the first time), and I like to listen to the Jap ost a lot these days (Son Goku is the Strongest After All being a favorite track of mine). I guess what I am trying to say is... it's possible to love both Z and Kai, I encourage people to watch both.
Ur right but mannn I'm just tryna watch 1... Bcz Kai sound about perfect for me cz i gues it had less fillers and sadly don't come for my soul but I don't really give af about the music but like I heard things like the tournament not being in Kai and that's the typa this that worry me...so what I mean to say it ask I guess is, If I watch Kai, will they'll be anything important or something MOST worth watching that I missed in Z instead? Please answer my question. It help...I've been tryna decide for like 2 weeks now I just don't know.
@@sense3195 Most of what you'll miss is filler if you see Kai... for example Goku and Piccolo learning how to drive cars (pretty funny filler episode not gonna lie) and the Otherworld Tournament (while that filler arc is pretty awesome, it doesn't add much to the story Akira Toriyama told in the manga/Kai)
@@trevinodude Thank You... honestly the best reply I've gotten I think I might come to my decision...probably z...something that bothered me alot that Kai did was it took away the nature dragon Ball always had, well kinda, fro.what I've seen cz literally just now finished watching the first 5 episodes of both back to back like back and forth basically and the dubs seemed different in the way where u miss out alot dialogue that seems more dragon Ball like lmao...imma just go with z...oof Soo many epiyfor no reason😭I think I could handle it

Dragon ball Z Kai was my introduction to dragon ball and tbh in my eyes it really wasn’t anything wrong or weird with it It is what got me invested in dragon ball and the theme song was probably and still is my favorite anime theme song since it was my first
Just gonna clarify cause I’m a little surprised you didn’t state it very clearly If you want the North American Blu rays that have the Yamamoto music, you need to get the “Part” sets, not the “Season” sets This only applies to parts 1-4. The second half of the show, it doesn’t matter because we only ever got the Kikuchi version, so you might as well get “Season”s 3 and 4
Going further into the Yamamoto OST Kai Episode 64 was delayed immediately by the incident while Nicktoons kept the score with a few exceptions for a bit longer on reruns. 4kids changed the music for Episode 35 immediately & I remember being creeped out when I decided to watch how the most censored version of Kai 37 would play out only to hear that only the insert song was left intact. Episodes 53-63 would keep the Yamamoto OST on Nicktoons longest however the offending tracks that were suspected of plagiarism in Episodes 55 & 56 were replaced in said episodes.
I like this video. You told quite deeply about the background information of Dragon Ball Kai, and I appreciate the the overall amount of research you put into this. I had no idea that Mr Popo was recoloured blue in some American version. How bizarre. However, you made a mistake when you claimed that the only way to have "seen" (by which I suppose you meant "heard") the original Yamamoto's score was if one watched it from television in the original broadcast. I watched the whole Kai series with Yamamoto's score (excluding the last three episodes, of course) from TH-cam in the year 2010. I really liked his compositions, even if they were plagiarized.
I started watching in 2010, and I watched both Z and Kai (Dub) interchangeably, so I feel I was at a neutral standpoint in forming my opinion (no nostalgia goggles for either version) and i'll say this: The acting was obviously WAY better in Kai. Most of the main characters kept their actors, but they'd all improved by leaps and bounds, and sounded much better. The characters who did get voice replacements were mostly positive imo. Frieza was a definite improvement. I actually watched the original Dub for Frieza first and did NOT like it at all. Sounded raspy and scratchy, and did not fit the character or his personality at all. Linda Young is a solid voice actor, just not for Frieza. She does better as Fortuneteller Baba. I like the direction for Gohan's actor, though I wish they aged the voice a bit in the Cell saga instead of keeping it mostly the same. Both of Bulma's actresses do well, I don't really prefer one over the other. I do think Android 18's original actress (who returned to the role in Super) fit her character a little better than her Kai actress, but both do a good job. In terms of pacing, Kai wins this one no doubt. I never got the feeling I missed anything (except the driving episode) after watching Kai. Same great show in way less episodes. Now i'm sure i'll get some flack for this, but Faulconer's soundtrack is not the Holy Grail of OSTs everyone makes it out to be. It has a handful of very memorable themes such as Gohan's Anger, Cell's theme, and the SSJ3 theme just to name a few. But the general background music was very lackluster. Kai's OST (Yamamoto) had much better background music imo, unfortunately it was just plagiarized and remixed, but it still worked very well. The character specific themes, on the other hand, were great. Only A Chilling Elegy (Frieza) and Super Dragon Soul (Goku) were both great character themes. Hell, Kai had it's own SSJ3 theme that worked very well. Kai's Ginyu Force Theme was also great and added a lot of energy to their intro when they first got to Namek. All in all, I do prefer Kai, it's the same exact show with better pacing, better acting, and a soundtrack that works very well and is at least comparable to Faulconer's (sorry, it's not the perfect OST some people make it out to be) and yes it DOES have blood, cursing etc. I will say there are a few select scenes that Z does better, like when Gohan is killing Cell. Cell's actor has always been really good, and the Faulconer score actually fits well here. I see no reason other then nostalgia that people hate Kai. There are STILL somehow some people who use the excuse that Kai has no blood, cursing etc. How have they not learned there's an Uncut version? Use your brains, people, even if only a little.
👀 I fucking love you. Thank God, ur amazing. To add to this: ssj3 was better for the dbz(original) and the flashback when Majin vegeta was explaining to ssj2 goku his humiliation. But faulconers music didn't match with kai. Some songs were good; but overall I didn't like it. Too many people suck up that tech music for dbz. I feel as if so many people didn't watch kai, and just assume. I like how kai was closer to the manga too. The frieza ark is my favorite; and I love goku's transition from nice to angry. He isn't dumb as fuck like he was in super from the beginning
I agree. Not a big fan of clickenbeard's take on Gohan. While I think her take on luffy is good, I just think Stephanie brought more emotion to the character.
In cutting out most of the filler parts they also cut out some cannon parts as well. Kai had cut out the the part when Krillin was talking to himself about living and getting married right before Piccolo appears at Roshi house to team up with Goku to stop Raditz.

I grew up watching the original, and I can honestly say that Kai is my preferred way to watch Dragon Ball Z for many reasons. - The writing and the story pacing is the most prominent. Everything just flows a lot better, since they removed all the terrible and pointless filler, and the battles don't drag on for 10-20 episodes. There aren't any episodes in which it only consisted of characters screaming or just staring at each other without uttering a single word. The writing is much more accurate to the manga, so you get to experience DBZ how it was supposed to be in English. - The quality of the voice acting is overall much better. By the time Kai was being redone, the returning VAs had about 10 years of getting accustomed to their roles through the many films and video game adaptations. As such, the voice overs sound much more natural and refined as opposed to the more stilted and corny performance of the original. I even prefer some of the newer VAs over their previous ones, with my favorite being Chris Ayres as Frieza. - This is subjective, but I honestly prefer the Japanese music (whether it be Yamamoto, Kikuchi, or my personal favorite Sumitomo) over Bruce Faulconer's score. Aside from Rock the Dragon, the main instrumental theme, and a handful of character themes, I found his compositions to be pretty forgettable. Just a bunch of generic rock and synth tunes that droned on and on. And this is a minor thing, but I didn't like how the music played EVERYWHERE, even during scenes that called for silence. Thankfully they decided to just stick with the original Japanese scores for later shows. There's honestly no need for a replacement scores anymore. I can respect and appreciate the original for being a huge part of my childhood and being probably the most iconic anime, but I'd be lying if I said it's aged gracefully.
I hate this.. it had a better dub. No it didn't, not in the slightest. The original is SO MUCH better!! I understand this is Generation bias but Z is on a whole other level. DBZ is supposed to be Gritty and intense & Kai don't hit as hard. & the battle dragging out and been long is what put DBZ in its own league to other Animes. For example.. the Goku vs Frieza fight is still the best fight in DB because of how long it was, it was epic af! & yes DBZ has aged gracefully, the animations in DBZ are supposed gritty and give it a intense feeling. That's how DBZ is supposed to be.
Thanks so much for watching! This took me 7 months to research & finish. Thanks to MJxTV and Frozen Particle for helping edit. Remember, this is NOT about Z vs Kai- its just the STORY of what it is and why it exists and what happened.

But it wasn’t his tho
Dragon ball Z Kai was my introduction to dragon ball and tbh in my eyes it really wasn’t anything wrong or weird with it
It is what got me invested in dragon ball and the theme song was probably and still is my favorite anime theme song since it was my first
Just gonna clarify cause I’m a little surprised you didn’t state it very clearly
If you want the North American Blu rays that have the Yamamoto music, you need to get the “Part” sets, not the “Season” sets
This only applies to parts 1-4.
I remember the summer of 2010 seeing Bardock in the first episode of DBZ Kai, I instantly became a Fan
I can’t believe that if dragon ball z kai wouldn’t had existed I would had never watched dbz/dbz or even anime in general
I started watching in 2010, and I watched both Z and Kai (Dub) interchangeably, so I feel I was at a neutral standpoint in forming my opinion (no nostalgia goggles for either version) and i'll say this:
The acting was obviously WAY better in Kai.
I agree fully
101% Agree with you.
Gunnar Claxton do you think that the original Dragon Ball Z tournament and buu Saga are better or the Kai versions r
@总 In my opinion, Kai is much better for a first time viewer.
The funimation dub of Dragon Ball Kai in the Android saga was my first exposure to Dragonball
Me too
Freezia saga ending then android saga
I know it’s been a few years, but can we have that follow up video on Final Chapters? I’m super interested.
The new Gohan voice annoyed me a lot, to the point where I stopped watching lol. Idk if I'd watch it again, probably just the Buu saga.
Why? it makes Gohan actually sound like a little kid
I agree. Not a big fan of clickenbeard's take on Gohan. While I think her take on luffy is good, I just think Stephanie brought more emotion to the character.
Preach my dude
@@MrQuarantine
She definitely doesn't fit Luffy
@@MrQuarantine I Prefer Stephanie As Gohan
December 2019 and still waiting on that Dragon Ball Z Kai - The Final Chapters video bro
In cutting out most of the filler parts they also cut out some cannon parts as well. Kai had cut out the the part when Krillin was talking to himself about living and getting married right before Piccolo appears at Roshi house to team up with Goku to stop Raditz.
Geekdom, this may have been one of your best videos yet, so much content and tidbits of info even us hardcore fans didn’t know, this painted a beautiful picture of the series, TY Geekdom 🙏🏼🥂
Yeah but the music is wayyyyy worse
Fantastic video !! Very informative!!
Man, I’m still waiting for the final chapters episode from Geekdom
