Junkyard 101, always pull drivetrain parts from cars with crash damage. Usually driving when crashed.
Clean body = no engine or tranny
2:45 you had a lincoln mark 8 right behind you bro. it has the 280bhp DOHC 4.6 V8 basically the mustang cobra engine. I would've grabbed that if it was ok.

This is why you ALWAYS roll an engine over by hand before going through the pain of yanking it at the junkyard. At least you got the warranty. 🤣

I've done the 302 in a crown victoria. Still working on it but it runs. It works great on it, more torque than the 4.6. And cheaper to mod
And the 4.6s have a bunch of torque! Gotta be unbelievable!
You have to swap the trans too
Or atleast a bellhousing since Craig's is manual swapped
@@Vaino_Hotti on mines I did a 4r70w from an explorer and manual valve body. That way it's less electronics
You could technically take the broken motors and make a couple of tables out of them and then sale them.
Engine tables sale for around $1500.
Soo you could still make some profit and maybe even use said profit for one of your project vehicles.
If your ever in this situation again, this is something I don’t recommend for longevity, but in a pinch it’s worked. If your cylinders are in decent shape, just replace the piston-rod assemblies in your original motor for the Vic. The bob weights will be within factory tolerances hopefully, and with a re-ring on the motor you might be surprised.

The coyote does drop right in and bolt up to the crown Vic trans. But I say tear apart both Vic motors and make one

Now that you showed this. I feel like junkyard motor if possible pull the pan before fully pulling. Even if you got to lift the engine. Pull it to check.

But remember with these types of things "If you think you've reached ROCK BOTTOM make sure you've put down the shovel first!!" LOL.
You got car luck like I do, bro! Lol did something similar. Went and bought a trans for my wife's avalanche. 300 as is. Worked for 6 months and took a shit on us. A year later, I got her a trailblazer, and the same issue trans goes out after about 9 months. Bought a grand am had a head gasket issue fixed head gasket fixed it ran great for like 8 months, the security system. Messes up can't fix it. Got a g6 from a buddy of mine ran great for about 2 months. I took it all over one day, going across railroad tracks, but I hadn't had a single issue before this. All of a sudden, an error pops up on dash starts revving high. Pull over shut it off, thinking it'll reset after I restart it, nope will not crank.

Low buck swap parts around a rebuild of a bunch of scrap modular engines, tossed into a '97-03 F150 that becomes shop truck #2 or a quick flipper to fund something your care about? Thanks for sharing the pain, not everything can be a simple killer custom with minimal effort!

Start using that borescope before you get a engine all the way back to the shop..... And don't buy motors from cars that have no hoods and always pull the dipstick.....sorry Craig great educational video tho 👍
Craig you seem surprised that the engine was Junk, after all It's a Ford! LOL. I once was replacing a C4 transmission and went to the parts yard and pulled 4 transmissions until I found a good enough one and Had that rebuilt, I was P/O by the time I finished. since then I just send them out for rebuild that way they are under a warranty for My Customers!

Moral of the story ? Make the most of what you got the rest will fix itself it's going to get frustrating but you handled it well and came out on top of the Heap😅

Should have swapped your 5L Mustang engine in the Crown Vic maybe with the 5 speed it came with as you already bought a new setup for your Mustang.
Don’t beat yourself up I would say most mechanics have made mistakes think of it this way 20 years from now you will have great stories you didn’t give up that’s what counts keep your head up you are doing great 😊😊😊

You learned a hard lesson. Never leave the junk yard with an engine that you haven't run yet. If they will not let you fire it up and they won't either, don't buy it. A good junk yard will not sell an engine that they haven't seen run. If they do, they are crooks looking to take your money. I've bought hundreds of engines in the past 35 years. I've never bought one that I didn't see and hear it run first. I've only been in one junk yard that wouldn't let me fire up an engine before I bought it. They put themselves out of business because of too many complaints. Eventually No one would buy from them.
Go look for an interceptor motor from a cop car with low milage, everything's upgraded including suspension, and they retire there fleet cars at 90,000 miles there just broke in at 90, government auction is your best bet for a sick runner....
you never take a motor home without rolling it over first in the yard brother, you should know this i think you are just going to fast not thinking..
I'm no expert ,but I wonder why you didn't turn the engine over a full 360 degrees before pulling and purchasing
Always bring straws in the junkyard and put them in each spark plug hole and rotate the motor if all the straws move your good

Avid pick-n-pull, for engines if Vic in yard is totaled, the vehicle was running up to the point it was totaled, 12:17 pull it, most of the time the engine will be sound, car looks clean then most likely came to yard for mechanical issues…
Wouldn’t the yard you purchased the engine from warranty it? Surely they had access to another 4.6?
I don't know about LKQ where you live at but where I live at LKQ gives you a 30-day warranty on them if it's bad you can carry it back and get another one for free

Tristan, I think the 5.0 coyote motor will be good in that car do the frame and how you want to and build it up as how you want to OK toss some black widows exhaust on it and have fun brother you basically have everything there to build something cool yeah buddy
Pick up an 03/04 lincoln navigator they came with the 5.4L Dohc and a strong crank
I can relate with getting a junk engine (sorta). I bought a Nissan s14 with a bad engine, but it came with a "working" one that needed to be swapped in. long story short, its been 4 months and about $3k into this supposedly good engine and I still don't even have the engine in the car. I like seeing that everybody goes through this shit with cars and that I aint alone with this god forsaken hobby. if you can even call it a hobby at this point.
That sucks. Junkyard not warrantying it is in my mind bad business practice. Do the the Coyote swap and move on.
I bought a motor recently. It turned over by hand and everything. Ended up having bad rings and smokes a ridiculous amount.
I would say take some time off Go enjoy your vacation with you and your family and your girlfriend and say the hell with these junkers for the time being!

I recognize that yard, right off the 76 near the Oceanside gate of Pendleton. I pulled some good fox parts out of there when I was enlisted!
Dude I heard you say "I'm going to buy the warranty" and even if you didn't there should be at least a 7 day return policy if the engine is grenaded! Take that one back and exchange it or replace it.
If you find a Crown Vic in a junkyard I'm fairly sure a blown engine is why it's there!!

I always try to figure out what put the car in the junkyard in the first place. If the body is good I assume the motor or transmission is shot. Not 100% but makes sense to me lol. Hope the new motor is good to go

I know this is a week or more ago but you could have pulled both engines apart to build one good one only paying for bearings and gaskets and dingle ball hone the damn thing. Then you'll have a spare. Just a thought.

Why not harvest a couple good piston/rods from a junk engine, and install into the running/knocking engine?

I'm beginning to think Ford mod motors should have a pin on the dipstick, so it's easy to tell it's a grenade.
If you just bought the motor you should be able to take it back. You should have a 30 day warranty.
see if you have a core supply place around you. they buy junk motors , alternators, etc. anything that can be used as a core at any parts house they should buy from you. easy way to make money back off junk stuff
couldn't you just swap a piston form the worst motor into the bad motor? if the only thing wrong with the bad motor is a bent rod, you still got 8 good pistons, and wrist pins. in the worst motor you got 7 good pistons, rods, and wrist pins to find a suitable replacement. it only needs to go to one track event.
I had an idea before I clicked on the video that it would be flashbacks to the Galaxies. "I have the worst luck with these cars. The world must hate me or these cars do." 😂
Never buy a motor or a transmission from a car that has not been wrecked. If the car is wrecked, you know it was moving when it died.

If you just needed it to run I would have pulled together parts from both blown engines to make one good engine as long as all the cylinder walls on one of the blocks was good.
Pull original motor. Buy boss 302 rods. Install rods and enjoy a motor ready for some boost
It's a 2v if the one in your car runs pull it tear it down rhey are simple and reliable dive it slap a rod and piston if you need or timing set whatever it is keep up the goodnwork!
COYOTE SWAPPP nvm don’t take a step back
missing bolt missing bolt, too whatever rod aint bent, weld them into solid bars and put them back in. rod bolts rod bolts have you ever seen a real rod brake spares the rod main. loose rod bolts because they loosened all the rod bolts before selling it to a civilian.
Note to self, always inspect the bottom end before buying a salvage engine.

I was looking for a comment of someone telling Craig to put his f100 on the crown vic frame and then the coyote engine in it.
an idea if you want to sent the damaged engine of to get fixed and have stock replacement parts in it and have it as a spare ready to go for when the junkyard engine gets damaged
if confused on what i am saying always have a stock spare engine ready to go for when the engine in use gets damaged
until you buy the desired ungraded engine later
