Seeing this makes me happy my dad kept his 70 r/t in the garage all these years he bought it in 84 for 800$ the rear quarters got rusty so we cut them out and bought new ones and there's a tiny bit of rust around the rear window above the trunk and that's it currently about to start it for the first time since 87
My first car was a '68 that I bought off the little old lady next door. Body and interior were perfect but she let her son work on the engine (383) and the top end was off and full of mouse nests. But it was rusty and that's a good sign, right? Anyways, I had it towed over to my family's shop and within a few hours one of our customers offered stupid good money for the car. I sold it and bought a 1970 Nova and had plenty of cash left over. Good times!
Happy I could assist you in your Mopar hoarding! I enjoy enabling friends to make expensive car choices! I personally would enjoy seeing a dirt road thrasher maybe more mad max style. Burnout machine, drifting, and all the hooligan shenanigans you can imagine!
So just curious Jamie... what exactly would you weld subframe connectors to? :) And yes, I did catch your paraphrase of "Whip It"... "When a Charger comes along, you must buy it"
@@DeadDodgeGarage I dunno... may have to do floors first. At least sheetmetal is available for that... I'm not that lucky other than a few Charger/Coronet shared items.
Looks like you live in a beautiful part of the country. Can't beat those #452 heads (for a good smog era head). I ported mine & shaved .060 off of them to make my '65 Dodge Coronet go real good.
OMG! It's story time! In 1983 I was 24, and living in the rust belt of Western NY. I was in the market for a Superbird. I found an orange Daytona with black guts and a white wing. The original owner was selling it for $2000. It was a 440, 4 speed with 54,000 miles. It ran and drove great, and everything worked. It was completely an untouched, all factory equipped original. I had the cash in my pocket, but I passed on it because it had 2 dime sized rust holes in the quarters behind the wheels. My friend bought it... parked it his yard for ten years and sold it for $8000. Yep. Wing cars were two grand back in '83! It sounds like a bonehead move, and missed opportunity today, but had I bought the car, I would have drove it for a year and sold it to buy something else. I had three more chances to buy a wing car... a Hemi Daytona that was missing its engine, and 2 Superbirds. The best one was a pristine Superbird for $4500, but after I drove it, my desire for a wing car died, because ironically, people in those days called you stupid for driving such an ugly car!
Back to 1983, just finished Basic Training for the Army Infantry and had a bonus check burning a hole i my wallet. See a 1970 Charger at a local used car dealer for I think around $2000. It was Root Beer Brown with a white vinyl top an brown interior. The engine was a 2 barrel 318 with an auto transmission behind it. I kept it for about four months and found it boring with the 318 so I sold it to another soldier. He never transferred the title and sold it to another soldier that I had to go to the title transfer place to get the car into his name. He got drunk one night and creamed the rear end into a telephone pole.
After my 2nd viewing I wish to add to my previous comment; please build the street machine you can daily drive and be afraid every day knowing how much fun (trouble) you can have in her. The fun part is missing out of daily transportation with round aerodynamic no style modern vehicles.
The red one will like its new nursing home friend, its rough but still would be Uncle Tony approved, his orchards of pickins are likely a bit better in TN than in the PNW. Looking forward to future updates !
You got the parts Jamie BUT you have a huge panel job 😳. So was it red or blue 🤔etc . On another note point our 273 V8 in the AP6 VC and VE had more HP than the 273 you mentioned 😃.👍🏻🇦🇺.
All Chargers had them in some years, like ‘68. It was included with the “heavy duty suspension” that all Chargers came with. I am still not sure when that stopped. Definitely by ‘73.
I hope someday to visit you as I love chargers just like you. Someday, when I get back from Virginia, I will go over to Rocket while you’re working and will visit.
I'd weld up all of the holes and paint it B5 again. I prefer a black vinyl top on the '68 too , with that red, but white looks especially good with colors like B5. I wonder what color the top was. The white gives a real clean look - but is kinda grampa-ish. I also wonder if they Bondo'ed the roof seams, which wouldn't've been leaded if the car got a vinyl top I think. Bondo is bad because it doesn't like to flex like lead does, and that area of a unibody is subject to some flex.
The seams would’ve been leaded either way. I don’t know if there is bondo there, but the roof seam looked good and I didn’t suspect any tomfoolery there. I haven’t gone looking for filled trim holes yet either. But either way, I don’t think I’d put a vinyl top back on. I always wanted a red ‘68 with black top, black stripe and black interior. Once I saw the white in person though… I realized how awesome it was. I could never change it.
Well you made my Saturday 😂 listening to you ramble on about the rusty 69 charger. P.S. for sale fifteen projects for sale, y'all pick & choose which one.😊 $2500. Each. Always great to watch UTG 😊
Jamie, seriously! You are 10 times more intelligent than I am, and I know when I buy a car that rust is the most important thing to look at nothing else matters it doesn’t matter what type of car it is or anything it is how bad is the rust. I’m absolutely wishing for the best but maybe someone will come by and say look I’ll give you 20 bucks to pull that thing out of there and you take it.😳😂😂 looking forward to all your future videos no matter what you film!
I did look, just not hard enough. Haha. The thing is, if you want one of these, and you don’t want to pay $50k, this is what you get. There are no other options. I got lucky and bought this one before it hit Marketplace, or there would’ve been 100+ other guys lined up to buy it.
I love it. I have a ratty 68 mustang fastback and people lose their minds over it. It is crazy how people are attracted to an iconic car that is not restored or about to be. Party on Jamie. I have a buddy that has a satin black charger with the flat black callouts it is really hard to beat the look. It just looks sinister
Don't think I'd do much with it. Just make a beater. Leave the panel rust. Belt sand primer off the side. Back to some kind of blue or red. Clear coat it. Just some thick plate metal for floors. Scarlet but fun beater. Good luck. Great looking car.
I need a little bit more structural rigidity for what I have in mind… and I’m afraid there isn’t surviving paint under most of the primer. But I essentially plan to do as little as possible.
@@DeadDodgeGarage ye Man keep the rusty roof and top side. Blow white down the sides with a black stripe. Black wheels with white letters. Good luck. If it was mine that is. ,,🤣🤣
Well, I'm glad I asked in last week's live chat how much of a Charger you could build from repro sheet metal because I think I'm gonna get to see. I think as long as you keep that VIN tag, it still the Ship of Theseus
I think it would be cool with your skill level and tools available to take a donor more door A body and strip all useable parts-slant six,a904,7 1/4 and bolt it in. Then take patches of all the donor a body metal (roof, floor,trunk-anything metal) and canabolize it to make patches for a floor and trunk in the charger. Extreme budget build. I bet you could come out cheaper using an a body donor and putting together a budget charger than trying to find b body parts to affix. I wouldn’t mind cruising in a slant charger, as long as it’s reliable. Either way nice find!
Well first you gotta get rid of the fat brake pedal so you can put in your left leg exerciser and then get that pistol grip thing that comes through the floor. They say the four link suspension works great in the rear. I was always curious what primer black would look like if you sprayed some clear coat over top. Like a paint job in progress for as you do body repairs.
I appreciate the irony of calling it a race car when it has a lot of the 1979 "kitsch" that guys inflicted on cars which actually made it worse in every respect. Especially racing. I LOL'd when you mentioned that is didn't have ladder bars. A lot of guys that want to make a 1979 malaise era kitsch car today have forgotten that covering the back windows with free decals from the hot rod store was part of it. The small steering wheel.... I would have included the ladder bars as part of it, but now I am not so sure they were all poser on a Mopar. I would like to see you test them out on something and give your impression as to whether they helped.
I didn’t call it anything, I asked the question - drag car or 70s-80s street machine? I think we all know it was the latter, when we consider that it still had a small block under the hood. Also, I said it’s missing shackles - ladder bars are something very, very different. Shackles exist to lift the rear of the car slightly and ruin your leaf springs. Ladder bars are actually a useful traction device. The slapper bars that are on it are often said to be pointless on a Mopar, so you could also be referring to that. But I have heard conflicting reports. Either way, these ones weren’t doing anything without the rubber pads that engage with the leaf springs.
I know a guy whose brother has a general lee. He bought it done. Has had it for a few years. It is in mint shape. Anyways, the guy has a shop like yours. He is going to take the general lee and change it back to original which happens to be red. I know you will like this story.
There was a time when I was afraid of rust! If you can do it all yourself.....worth the work! I wanted ask....about your 68. I noticed your wheels are SS and I'm doing the same. Can you tell me what rim/ tire combo you run? Is that the biggest for stock chassis and suspension?
Rear is 275/60r15. Front is 245/60r15. I don’t know the specific measurements on the wheels, but the rear has more width and about the same back spacing to kick the tire outward and give the dished look. I think front is 15x7 with 3.5” back spacing and rear is 15x8 with 3.5”, but that’s an eyeball measurement. The 275 fits with no problem. The old rear tires were 295s on a 10.5” wide wheel. If they had another inch of back spacing, they would’ve fit great in the wheel well and not hit anything. A 295 back tire is definitely possible on a Charger with very careful measurement and wheel ordering.
Thanks a bunch Jamie...my particular car is a 70 Bee. I want to order my 275/60/15 and 225/70/15's soon. I also plan to use the SS wheels and the critical question is of course backspacing. I ran a 10x15 deep dish Crager on a Challenger and they fit..barely. Surely this B body has the extra room out back. Incidentally, I hope it doesn't make any difference but I converted to 4 wheel disc too.
There is an old Charger just down the street from me just sitting in a driveway rusting away. The owners try to keep it hidden underneath a tarp and do for the most part, but the first time I saw it, I knew it was a 2nd generation Charger just by the shape. Then one day, there was a big storm and the wind tore the tarp off and low and behold, a very ratty B5 Blue 68 Charger, I've never gotten to see it close up as I don't know the owner's but something tells they are not very receptive to the idea of selling her, hence the tarp. Hopefully, one day she will be in the hands of someone with the motivation and resources to make her awesome again.
Oh yeah, I did a couple videos way back when I got it. The Cummins stuff doesn't get views so I don't bother anymore. But I love that truck - and I do have a Cummins powered ramp truck build coming up that I have wanted to do for like a decade now.
I think I would lean with the brake and suspension work to go with the 440 . With the power of the 440 it's always a plus to be able to stop and take a corners, especially where you live. Stay safe buddy.
Edit, I wrote all that below before seeing just how bad it is. You have to give us the back story on how you bought it without knowing what you were getting. Was it that cheap? Street strip, just a fun car. Full interior, no roll bar, 440. Stock looking except the tires and wheels.
It wasn't quite cheap enough. But it's a Charger. When you can buy a Charger... buy it. I was sent some pictures and could see the back corners, the worse lower quarter, and scale on the floor. But the way they were shot (as usual) really didn't show the actual level of badness.
I feel your pain, and excitement. I share your affliction for old rotten hulks. I just couldn't resist this poor old 62 C30 long panel truck last summer. And I STILL haven't even towed it out of the guys yard yet!! At 55 years old, I honestly have NO IDEA if when or how I'll finish ANY of my project vehicles. But, I dont care. It's what makes me happy. I thank GOD for this hobby.
Oh yeah. Awesome. I resigned myself to the fact that I could never finish everything that I want to. But the drive and the excitement for the projects keeps me going. It's my main motivation for getting out of bed in the morning. I hope not to watch all of them rust into the earth around me, but I will never get to all of the builds, and that's ok.
Fun fact. That Oregon plate is not transferable. The public got angry when that plate came out showing Oregon with brown skies so they tried to get rid of the plates. Starting with the Q series with the blue sky you can transfer them to your new car.
Piece of rusty but mostly complete garbage non R/T roller - 10-14k. Drivable but not nice basic 318 or other low level car - 25-35k. Really nice 318 car - 45-60k. Relatively nice 383 car - 50-75k. Pretty crappy but complete R/T - $30k-$50k. Driver quality R/T - $75-90k. Collector grade R/T… $150k+ Prices subject to change due to whatever people are asking on Marketplace today, the phase of the moon, and the amount of chemicals in the drinking water supply.
Love the Charger. A Coronet 500 is a better choice to brawl. The patina craze is better done with dry climate cars. If you had a good touch with a welder and money AMD would be great.
Yes, so I've heard. Haha. As a general rule, I won't drive more than a few hours in any direction to get a project car - excepting particularly interesting circumstances. But I've got plenty of cars in my back yard (literally and figuratively) and I don't need to try that hard for content.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I totally get that it was more of an possible option for panels for the car you just picked up although I'm not sure they will do that
go with the slant six engine...it would actually be very refreshing to see someone build a really smooth quiet nice driving charger that just floats down the road effortlessly and runs perfect...the kind of charger you could just lolly gag around in all day without a care, not performance oriented but comfort and smoothness
I have that. It’s my almost completely stock ‘68 383 car. I would trust it to go anywhere. It’s smooth, it’s comfortable, and everybody craps their pants when they see it. I would never ruin it by making performance modifications. It’s my highway cruiser. Now, I have actually started to put together a slant six powered daily driver quality car on the channel before. For some reason I traded that to my brother.
To me, this car is absolutely beautiful.Because it reminds me and johnny of our old 69 so much ...and it actually resembles a decent charger... unlike that hot steamer that tom just picked up on his video today. 😆
Structural rust, and any rust that be a problem. Subframe connectors. Suspension including front/rear sway bars. Built 440, 3rd pedal. I have fun. Why build it for a drag strip? Why build it for any singular task. Built it to beat it, and build it to rebuilt it. Just my 2cents.
I know it was always optional, just odd to see it in a base 318 car like this one. I don’t have a fender tag so I have no idea what it was or wasn’t ordered with beyond the obvious.
Go to wholesale metal warehouse get you some 2x3 sq tube for your frame cons and any extras you need, cutout whole FP,weld in 1 piece FP 2 in higher remember you don't have to weld everything 3m panel bond is your friend.400 built will be cheaper and lighter.Good luck😊

Another awesome video!! It would make an awesome drag car because you already have two beautiful street cruisers. Do what your gut says! Thanks for the content
Good times!
Makes me miss washington and a rusty shop. Bravo
Happy I could assist you in your Mopar hoarding! I enjoy enabling friends to make expensive car choices! I personally would enjoy seeing a dirt road thrasher maybe more mad max style. Burnout machine, drifting, and all the hooligan shenanigans you can imagine!
Coming right up!
So just curious Jamie... what exactly would you weld subframe connectors to? :) And yes, I did catch your paraphrase of "Whip It"... "When a Charger comes along, you must buy it"
Hopefully there’s still some metal in there somewhere 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage I dunno... may have to do floors first. At least sheetmetal is available for that... I'm not that lucky other than a few Charger/Coronet shared items.
Here is my input Jamie. You build that bad boy the way you want the thing to be!
I will agree, i think the B5 blue would look great on it!
Just not orange. Pretty please?
I kinda like the "house paint white, with triple color fade!" look!
It’s actually primer gray. It does look pretty crappy white on camera. Haha.
What a beautiful rustpile🤗! AMD is going to love you 😅. The charger lives-🤷🏻♂️we’ll it will…all in due time my friend 😁
The performance version of the 273 had a lot more than that here too. Haha.
6.1 Hemi swap , very cool 69. Did small block chargers come with a front sway bar? I thought only big block cars got them. 🤔
Uncle Tony on the big screen 👍🏻😎
All that, and more
Jamie, seriously!
I love it! You did good and you know it! Are those front seats from a hang 10 dart?
Big time. No, I think they are brand X.
i got a 76 Jeep j10 with nearly as much rust as that took me 4-5 months to rebuild it all.. lots of cutting welding etc
@@DeadDodgeGarage might look good flat white with a flat black stripe. White don't show the defects. Good luck. Great find.
Yes I think you’re right. Haha. It really only needs like the whole back half… well and some other things
I’m definitely keeping an eye out for the three pedal solution parts. I’m a leaf spring guy though…
Really looking forward to this one. Unlike the Valiants, everything is available as a repop for this, right?
Just about, yeah. There’s a lot of stuff available.
Definitely a good candidate for a track drag car as you will have to cut out and replace a good portion of the metal regardless.
Most excellent.
I had Remington Mud Brutes on my '91.5 W250 Cummins, BEST truck tires I ever had.
B body needs a b or rb engine if options are available.
And multiple options are!
Yikes, brother! My favorite also, but wow. Did they park it in the bay? Hey, I see you have my 1st car up there ('66 Barracuda) That was a great car.
Maybe I missed it but would love to see a video on your Ram Cummins. I love Diesel’s. It’s music to my ears.
I’m not planning to drive it hard on the street. But I am thinking some level of suspension build would be cool.
@@DeadDodgeGarageI forgot to mention, I loved the “And remember”.

This one IS just to rot back into the Earth
As for the 15 foot tall chrome skeletons...A guy has the exact one in his back yard here in Spokane Washington. Maybe it's a thing.
Never seen a chrome one but there are a few less shiny ones around here. Haha.
Release the clacken!
I caught that 😂😂😂
OK, so I’m only a few (6-7) months behind on catching up on some past videos. I’m almost there. 👍🤘
Haha. Nice. Thank you for your efforts!
This one is one only a parent could love. Your prodigal has returned.
You are right, you do have your own show! And so many new videos!
Fun fact. That Oregon plate is not transferable. The public got angry when that plate came out showing Oregon with brown skies so they tried to get rid of the plates. Starting with the Q series with the blue sky you can transfer them to your new car.
Oh, I had no idea!
That project is over my head!
One of my criteria when I bought my Barracuda was the body had to be good...
That’s what I strongly prefer. Unfortunately they usually aren’t.
I would have kept the lama barn valiant, but I'm also biased to A bodies.
Either body style, you'll do great. Congrats
I really liked that car too. But I have two other A bodies that aren’t going anywhere, and another on the way. I can’t keep them all.
I’m interested in buying one but I don’t know what a fair price is for the different conditions.
Piece of rusty but mostly complete garbage non R/T roller - 10-14k. Drivable but not nice basic 318 or other low level car - 25-35k. Really nice 318 car - 45-60k. Relatively nice 383 car - 50-75k. Pretty crappy but complete R/T - $30k-$50k. Driver quality R/T - $75-90k. Collector grade R/T… $150k+
Prices subject to change due to whatever people are asking on Marketplace today, the phase of the moon, and the amount of chemicals in the drinking water supply.
Love the Charger. A Coronet 500 is a better choice to brawl.
The patina craze is better done with dry climate cars. If you had a good touch with a welder and money AMD would be great.
Oh don’t worry, my people will be calling their people. But I need to sell something else to fund it first.
I love chargers but this one may be a heap
You are not wrong… but I still love it
Hey I hear there's a Mopar "scrap yard" more of a project yard in Burlington WY
Yes, so I've heard. Haha. As a general rule, I won't drive more than a few hours in any direction to get a project car - excepting particularly interesting circumstances. But I've got plenty of cars in my back yard (literally and figuratively) and I don't need to try that hard for content.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I totally get that it was more of an possible option for panels for the car you just picked up although I'm not sure they will do that
Where it already has hole cut in trans tunnel it would look great with a 4 speed shifter coming through. And 3 pedals always makes a car cool and fun.
I agree. Haha. I don’t know if I will be able to trip over a whole big block four speed setup any time soon though.
Yea big block complicates things for sure. Either way a roadkill style charger would be cool.
go with the slant six engine...it would actually be very refreshing to see someone build a really smooth quiet nice driving charger that just floats down the road effortlessly and runs perfect...the kind of charger you could just lolly gag around in all day without a care, not performance oriented but comfort and smoothness
Oh yeah, his purchase makes mine looks like a mint one owner 🤣
You don’t really need to remove the rust. Just put the 440 in with a 3/4 cam and drive it. The rust will auto delete.
you can always turn it into a planter.. you know add a little more dirt, plant some roses, tulips, etc,...it'll drain the excess water off easily
🤣
Structural rust, and any rust that be a problem. Subframe connectors. Suspension including front/rear sway bars. Built 440, 3rd pedal.
I have fun. Why build it for a drag strip? Why build it for any singular task. Built it to beat it, and build it to rebuilt it.
Just my 2cents.
You’ve got it exactly! Except I am not committing to a third pedal - yet.
I’ve got two 69’ 318 SE Chargers . One , a rotted parts car and the other nearly rust free but brutally dented runner …both had tictoc tachs 👍
I know it was always optional, just odd to see it in a base 318 car like this one. I don’t have a fender tag so I have no idea what it was or wasn’t ordered with beyond the obvious.
Like your red 1 ,,but it's way better having 1 you can beat on a little. Cool car congrats!!
I’m not going to do any of those things. I did consider making my own subframe connectors though.
Might be a nice candidate for that hemi 🤷♂️ never know might be fun
For the lil Dodge Hemi? I did have that thought…
@@DeadDodgeGarage 🤷♂️ might be cool
You might know of Chris Birdsong in Las Vegas. He's like you with Chargers. About your age too.
Yes I’m very familiar with his work. Multiple people have told me to send it to him. Haha.
Put in whatever engine you want but it would be awesome see it going down a dirt road going sideways😁
And congratulations on the new to you Charger!
I couldn’t agree more. Haha. Thanks!
My mana got holes in the fingers on his gloves. OG right there
Is there enough frame left to save? How about the mounting points for the shackles/torsion bars?
So far, it’s just the one soft spot.

No, but the pattern isn't too far off. They definitely aren't 60s or 70s Mopar.
