If anyone has "Gear monitoring X" errors on their car with a 5l40 or 5l50 transmission and comes across this video, this is one of 5 things. 1. It can be a bad battery or bad charging system Either the battery alternator or voltage regulator is bad (Not the case in this video) 2. Bad/old transmission fluid or transmission filter clogged (Bad fluid wearing down clutches causing clogging of the filter and lower fluid pressure) Usually if the car can still drive OK before it goes into limp mode where it dosent move anymore Then a fluid + filter change aswell as a additive like lubeguard platinum can solve the issue and extend the transmission's life by anywhere from 10k-100k+ KM depending on the condition of the transmission. 3. Transfer case clutchpack failure, If you have a transfer case and it hasnt been serviced regularly then it can fail in a way where it can cause anything from a warning light + Loss of front wheel drive TO being only 1 wheel drive or even no wheel drive, The way to test the transfer case is to disconnect the 2 plugs on the actuator, clear codes then do a test drive. 4. Valve body springs/actuators Needs a rebuild, The valvebody is what controls the whole transmission and determines when and what to shift into, Over time the springs and actuators wear down and start to stick or not work as they're supposed to. 5. Torque converter or clutch pack failure, These failures will usually either not allow the car to shift or move at all or very slowly while giving off a burning smell, Usually doesnt happen suddenly and gives signs such as holding gears longer, Rough shifts, having a harder time getting off the line etc before complete failure, Do keep in mind that these symptons are also shared with having bad fluid. Generally speaking the most common cause of these faults are due to Not servicing the transmission on the required intervals of 40-60K KM depending on if you tow or not. Generally speaking if your issue happened suddenly then A fluid + filter change + Lubeguard platinum + Adaptations reset (through diagnostic tool) will 70% of the time fix the issue, Especially if the transmission suddenly decided to not move after stopping at a stoplight (most common to happen in cold weather as the fluid will thicken when cold and reduce pressures causing adaptations to change and eventually this loop causes issues). Most of the time this is what causes premature transmission failure But can be fixed most of the time. Bmw says "lifetime fluid" on their transmissions but that "lifetime fluid" ends when the transmission inevitably dies. If these transmissions are serviced in the regular interval of 40-60K KM they can be very reliable and go past 400-500K KM for the sedans and 300-400K KM for the SUV's aslong as they're properly treated.
Hi, I’m writing this mid video. Through my own personal experience with every bmw I’ve owned is you will constantly get random false fault codes until the battery has the proper charge (ie) a new battery, once that’s been done then you will find it easier to determine what true fault codes are present. Abs light and it’s friends all trigger each other. I’ve heard they’re known as the three amigos. Hope this is a bit helpful
Think ABS signal is used to a speed ref for the transmission? Disconneting the ABS can cause all sorts of unrelated issues to muddy the waters. Often, it must be key off engine off to clear some codes. they will not clear with engine running! Reconnect the ABS module!
When battery goes flat it puts the abs lights ect on as it doesn't know we're the steering angle is if he simply locked to locked the steering lights will go out basics
Sounds like the box is a donald duck job Sandy 😉👍👍, mucho dinera, plenty pennies , I did a 525 petrol auto years ago and it had a fault on the box , wouldnt change gears properly, there were 2 sensors in the box were called abb and naab , sump off , changed them both , new oil and filter boom , it drove properly again , hope the guy has plenty of dosh for this one 👍
The issue here is BMW put this gearbox in the diesels when they are not rated for that torque. And these GM boxes are pretty reliable and good in gasoline models of the X5 and other BMW models.
Nice one Sandy, your mate's right about those GM boxes, made of chocolate and surprised its done that many miles. Also, on camera, the sump retaining bolts looked a bit shiney as though someone else has had the sump off recently :)
Hi all, Ive got an x5 3.0i which has the GM Box With code P31, Ive recently replaced my gearbox and for some reason, It now runs fine for 5mins or so then jump out of gear, You Turn off the vehicle and on again after a minute or two then she drives well again for a few minutes and back to the fault, any idea what it could be ??? (NB: when i installed the gearbox the vehicle ran fine for a day or two)
The Chrysler Box is no more or less reliable than the ZF unit in these old things. Your problem is gonna be finding one .. they are rare as hens teeth!! You also have to be sure the part numbers match or it will not work correctly. If me more serves me, the last two numbers can be one digit out (0 or 1 say) but otherwise it has to match. Saving grace is they are a piece of cake to fit.
I have a bmw x5 2003 3LD. And it's well not go backwards even if you try and tow it. We have changed out the box as we did think it was the box. Before it would roll now it will not. We have remove the prop shift for the front wheels and now it will roll backwards. But still will not drive in reverse. It will however still drive forward all gears selectable. Sort of got me stumped. Any ideas pal?
Face the truth guys ! Auto box is fkd, rip it out and change it , then clear the codes and bobs your uncle .. it’s a painful truth to accept and me included I have an auto X5 … just have to bite the bullet and do a a grave yard shift with lots of coffee and red bull and change the bugger 🤣🤣🤣🤣 good luck 👍✊

Good fix Mike cheers sandy

Hi Sandy
Sorry this is a bit old post, can you please advise what was wrong on this gearbox.
I have the same code (35 EGS gear monitoring 3)

Did you fix the diff?
I'm having a similar problem: it will drive forward without any issues but will not move in reverse.
