@@silviataylor92 definitely replace the gear or entire actuator first. Your local shop shouldn’t charge more than 2 hrs labor for that job. Very easy. Try that first before looking at any other options! Be well.
Thank You!!!
@@silviataylor92 also note, the tires need to be changed all four at the same time. Has a single tire or pair ever been changed exclusively? All four need to be replaced at the same time, or it can cause a transfer case failure in extreme cases.
I need that plastic gear. And I live in CT. I have a 2007 bmw 328xi. Your links says not found
Thanks Chris, I’ve updated the links
Chris were you able to get your car fixed ,? Need help with mines
BMW has this transercase problem since day 1 it introduced X drive and it does not brother to fix it as the engine oil pan leak problem but instead spends too much time to fine tune its engines and created something that does not sell such as laser head lights. 2024 X3 still uses old stock of signal control stick that is twenty years old module.
im contacting the shop tomorrow and asking if they erased the codes or not ...
Could you please do a video on which repair is most likely when the gear exclamation trans light pops on the lower right side of dash. I replaced the crankcase position sensor which didn't solve it. Also I heard it coukd be the stop(brake) light switch on the brake pedal?? What else could it be?
Hey bud I’m not exactly sure which light you have but check your owner manual to identify what the warning is. I’d recommend using an inexpensive c310 scan tool to check for your trans and/or ABS codes and begin diagnosing at that point
I was hearing the actuator clicking after turning off the car.. Before I had chance to replace the gear my x3 went into limp mode.. So I replaced the gear but now what do I do about resetting the limp mode? Or will it reset itself? Or should i push to mechanic? Please help thanks
Cleared all codes generic code reader..
Cleaned 4 speed sensors..spark plugs. camshaft/crankshaft sensors, maf and checked all fluids.. Disconnected battery for 3 days.. I'm scared to turn ignition and see the Christmas lights.. It's not even thanksgiving yet
I replaced mine and have 5F3A & 5F39 code. It was stripped. I still have abs and 4x4 lights.. what should I do? 🚨🙁
Transfer case ::: My mechanic is telling me that if I change out the oil A couple times and running it and beating it up a little bit in my 528i . He said nine times out of 10 it knocks out the stuttering with the shifting. Do you think that is possible ??
My 2007 BMW X3 shifts fine but something is slipping in the drive train. The symptom is prominent when taking off from a stop. I was thinking the AWD transfer case is slipping or is it the gear you mentioned? Any ideas? No lights on the dash.
Hi 👋. Did you figure out the problem, I have the same issue X3.
Hey does that also cause it to slip
No it does not
Super helpful!
Does anybody know what this gear even does because I have been driving with a likely failed gear with no lights and no noticeable difference in my TC (transfer case)? I flushed the fluid a while back with OEM and it seemed to help too.
If this fails what happens . What is the cause of a X3 crabbing when turning on lock and rear wheels trying to spin
Crabbing can be tire pressure or tire sizes. Can also be transfer case issues.
Excellent- didin't realize how many of your videos I used. I have the Trifecta, found rear left ABS sensor connector cracked - need to replace "male" end ... getting 5F42 Trans Control Limp, 5DEC TC Malf, 5E34 Wheel SPeed Sensor, air gap rea left ...can the senor be the cause of the Transmission and TC codes ? don't hear any clicking on shutdown, and not getting the 5F39 code... driving it sees the speedometer work, then non-functional after accelaretion 20mph... lights come on. Don't come back on until acceleareting aprund 20mph .. again ..
Easiest thing you can do is remove actuator from the car (takes 20 min) and inspect it visually. Cheapest and easiest way to rule it out.
@@BIMMERZEITT Thank Rich, I did. Bought this X5 used ( now has 130k miles). I took the actuator apart, motor has a lot of play (wobbly) , the gear looks to have been changed out, as teh case case was clean with a bight green grease and virtually no shreads of gear materail ... so need a new actuator?(hopefully just that) Thanks, Rob.
@@robmasutti5306 most likely. The actuator is like $125 on Amazon these days. I’d go that route next. Still less than an hour labor at BMW!
Hello Rich. I replaced the transfercase actuator on BMW X3 but ABS light, brake light and 4X4 lights are still on. Do you know how I can get them to reset?
Did u figure out how to reset after the repair?
My 2016 x5m noise when turning and it feels like something is rubbing. Took it to 3 bmw mechanics .. two are saying the transfer case .. before I go to the dealer should I buy the reader from Amazon??
Hmm 2016? Seems unlikely case would fail so soon, unless it was abused or a single tire was replaced (versus all 4). Did you try the dealer or were those independent shops. Yes get a code reader and pull the exact codes. Or ask your shop what codes are present.
@@BIMMERZEITT the car has 39000 miles on it and is treated like a princess lol.. I am going to get it diagnosed at BMW .. I took it to another place today when they plugged in the computer they said it was the wheel alignment and steering calibration.. $240 later the problem is still happening
@@amalabed6462 with only 39k miles I think a major item like that would be covered under the BMW warranty. You should bring it back to your BMW dealership. See what is covered under the initial warranty. Even if out of warranty period (5 years old now) since it has low miles they may repair in good faith.
@@BIMMERZEITT that’s the plan! Thanks for the advice
Hey.. took it to a mechanic and they said transfer case although it doesn’t say that when the codes run up.. do you think it’s worth the money to get it diagnosed by BMW to determine the real cause?
Brilliant video may thanks
hi i'm just wonder why the 4x4 light still stay on after i already replace the transfer case gear. on my 05 bmw x5
You have to erase it sometimes with scan tool. And at the very least, have a capable scan tool to check for additional fault codes to help you diagnose
What if only my 4x4 light is out ?
if the transfer case plastic gear fails will it only be rwd? i have these light on and im sure its only rwd at the mo?
That depends, it could go both ways. Either no 4X4, or the whole thing seizes up and it is stuck in 4X4 where you'll notice the tires binding/screeching/bucking on tight turns or driving in parking lots.
@@BIMMERZEITT i think im rwd at the mo mate you think the plastic gear will fix it ?
@@ryancrf250guy8 worth a shot, it is your cheapest option. You could start by removing the transfer case actuator and inspecting the gear. Can get it removed in about 30-40 minutes.
@@BIMMERZEITT will get it done tomorrow nice 1 bud
@@BIMMERZEITT i just had my front axles replaced and I drove off home came to a stop 🛑 and I thought I was in neutral? Took it back to mechanic and he said it my transmission? I feel like he didn’t install the axles right causing the t case to lock as I’ve read that can happen? Do you think this happened to me ? Ps yesterday while I had it in drive and it wouldn’t move I reved the engine thinking it would engage gears and the drive shaft bent off and practically broke off I’m soooo mad cause I know my bmw is very good it never had that issue before the axles were changed !??

great points here guys.
Excellent, thank you so much, i am in SA i need a new gear and a Diagnostic tool, currently i am servicing the Transfer case and Gearbox, replacing the Transfer case chain and doing Clutch pack and Torque Converter, can i ask? Your servo motor gear, is it stronger than the standard gear? I think you said its re-in forced? Can you airfreight to South Africa? Will the Scan Tool work communicate with a 2010 E83 X3 2.0d ?
Do you know someone in Bloemfontein that can deal with this problem, I can't afford the dealer. X3
bought my parts new on fcp euro and even had the transfer case oil changed ...
Is that gear good for a 2007 X5 4.8i E70?
hey Miguel, yes it is the same gear for the E53 and E70. You can get the actuator with gear here: amzn.to/3AahE9A

@@2004skylinegtrr34 hey Miguel, that is frustrating! Did you scan your X5 with a BMW scan tool to get the stored codes? That is really the essential first step to diagnose correctly. Let me know what code you saw.
@@BIMMERZEITT well I ran the X5 with no codes showing.
Sup Rich...I’m in CT too. I don’t have a click but I’m clearly in 4x4 can feel tight/bind when turning at slow speed. I only have 4x4 light on and my code is 5462 “servo force too high” is this also the servo? I don’t have the triad.
hey, yeah it could be the gear has failed. Worst case scenario the entire servo motor could be replaced. You can start by removing the motor and inspecting the gear for worn teeth. See my other DIY video guide here: th-cam.com/video/UR7Vv5SQvDc/w-d-xo.html
Sadly confirmed both servo motor and gear are ok and functional...

Do you have a BMW specific scan tool or INPA with a laptop and cable?
BIMMER ZEIT no. I replace the plastic gear , I don’t see the broken gear. And put it back accordingly.
I don’t have inpa...
I should get the scanner first.
Right now I used fox scanner but doesn’t have capability to reset... I’ll be back learn and study your video..
Juper Simoran get the c310 scan tool. Check to see what codes your car is putting out. This is the cheapest and easiest step to begin figuring out what the problem is 😊
What if its only 4x4 light on and DSC inactive light ???
Step 1: scan for codes
@@BIMMERZEITT yes they did scan and still are clueless! Codes say 227 & 228 which are o2 bank 2 control deviation and o2 bank 1 control deviation..

My check engine light has Always been on for years ( Map Thermostat) which every mechanic told me not to bother replacing...

Maybe Fuel pump Relay??
Fuel pressure regulator??
Fuel filter??
Fuel Injectors ??

My 4x4 light is on by itself so do I need this part?
Hi, Step one is to scan your car with a BMW scan tool to get the trouble codes stored in the computer. You can't skip this step, otherwise you'll just be throwing parts and money at the car. I use the C310 for $55 which is less than what a shop will charge you to scan the car. Here: amzn.to/3n0stEU

Back in 1988 I had a BMW 325i with the straight 6 and manual transmission. The instrument cluster looked pretty much the same as the one in this video. In 30+ years, BMW did not bother to update the instrument cluster? Seriously? This is just sad.
very satisfying .well explained.
Had a similar problem first gear clunk. Reset tcm. Key on engine off hold down gas pedal for 15 seconds and voila😅🤣🤪
Is there any signal to let you know when it’s done properly?
Amazing thank you!!!
No other cars besides bmw x drives have this transfer case/gear issues every single bmw x i had had a issue with this sometime u can just get away with just replacing the actuator if you are lucky, but its i ashame bmw made this part of the car so fragile and very costly to replace ..
Nice. Job .
BMW management sucks. Don’t even stand by their products or their buyers. This needs to be a class action lawsuit and recall. Bad enough the car is out of operation they want you to pay thousands for their design flaws. This is unacceptable. People shouldn’t have to learn how to fix BMW’s mistakes that they won’t owned up to especially for the amount of money these cars costs to begin with.
"BMW - Broke My Wallet" - Scotty Kilmer
same symbol on my vehicle
Mine makes the sound 🤦
using plastic in car gear is not decent at all. BMW should be banned by doing that
sometimes they do it by design so it wears before the other gear
