    An honorary Oscar here in 1987, followed by 3 competitive Oscars later in the 1990's for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan... One of the most decorated filmmakers of all time!

    His speech was fantastic and he sounded as though he was graciously accepting the award with thoughts of reaching to become better which I was completely impressed and amazed by. I am not claiming that he knows everything that there is to know - what I do mean is that here is a man that has done so much and he is showing his respect of those before him and that to me is really quite impressive. Thank you ever so truly much for sharing this.

    This was partly an apology for the oversight on "The Color Purple" the year before. But in giving him the Thalberg award, they were honoring him as a producer of movies like "Gremlins", "The Goonies", and "The Money Pit".

      Back to the future.
      Color purple wasn't all that so I don't think it was an apology, but at this time no one expected him to seriously win a competitive oscar since he made very commercial, youth orientated entertainment. But his impact in the 80s on film was gigantic so he had to get something

    I've been searching a long time for this video. I saw it back in 1987 live on television and it was a magical moment to me. Spielberg is my idol when it comes to directing and movie making in general. He is my inspiration to making movies. The only thing I have a problem with is that this video is not complete. You don't see the sequence they made to honor his work and that to me is part of the real magic of this moment. So, please tell me, where can I get the whole footage?

    I saw this live back in 1987. When a clip of E.T. was shown (removed in this video due to copyright) after Richard Dreyfuss' intro, the audience burst into applause because that film had not been seen for years, not on TV nor home video. It was not like today when a theatrical film would go to home video or streaming within a few months. E.T. was released in theaters in 1982, and wasn't seen again until 1988 when a videotape came out.

    I had this recorded on an old VHS tape. Spielberg was my hero and I could not believe he had never received an Academy Award before. Too bad they cut from this video the wonderful montage of his films they showed at the time. He would have to wait until the next decade to finally get his Oscar for Schindler´s List.

    Although Irving Thalberg had been dead for over 50 years by the time of Spielberg accepting his award here it is clear too hear that Spielberg was trying to emulate the great heights achieved by Thalberg, the well deserving producer/director that has done just that.

    In the movie "Schindler's List" one of the prominent characters is "The Girl in Red". According to legend, this is a girl who “took part in the liberation of Kiev.” As is known, the first to begin the liberation of Kiev was the Women's Battalion from Bryansk in the forests near Kiev, evidence of this is documentary footage in the film "The Dawns-Stars Here Are Quiet." A civil war broke out in the Kuban steppes. The film "The Elusive Avengers" also contains documentary footage, where you can also see what the Cossacks looked like. Many times Spielberg (a Ukrainian Jew from Lvov who is a mail Nazi in the film) seemed to be filming the film "The Liberation of Stalingrad", but this is is documentary footage of the liberation of Kiew. And this is really a battle not for life, but for death. Still later, some shots were mounted where a couple of Jews and a whore are drinking champagne. The film “Schindler's List” uses documentary footage from the Death Camp near the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where you can see Schwartz’s Death Machine, documentary footage from the Concentration Camps, where people who were kidnapped for work and forced to work 12-14 hours a day and after a while they were simply no longer suitable to operate. People are also being artificially prepared for the idea of a Holocaust of the Jews, who are the SS-Waffen (look at the faces), for example there is a “line of Jews”, just one shot and everyone falls. This is for a future film. In fact, in 1943, an advertisement was posted for Jews “who wants to live better can go to Germany,” and only five thousand were shot at Babi Yar. FOR COMPARISON, heroically liberating Europe from fascism, 20 million Slavichs died. In Italy, 5 million partisans died heroically, and in Poland, 1 million partisans died heroically fighting against the Army of the Black Forces. Five million birch trees have appeared in Russian forests and right now there are many clips of the best music, where there are rows of birch trees and white cranes after all flew away in January of this year (there are witnesses). The following were killed in the camps: Kiev - 50 million, Bryansk - 10 million, Uzhgorod - 2 million, Dessau-10 million, Rom-10 million, Graz-2 million, Vienna-10 million, München-10 million, Barselona - 10 million , Montpellier - 10 million, Paris Saint Degol - 2 million civilians, Warsaw Getto -5 million . The liberation of Europe ended with the victory of the Red Army in Paris in 1946. Well, the girl in red was Italian and there are shots in the film where Spielberg is looking for her on the train as named “Stern” - “Star” to kill. There are also shots where she appears to be dead, but these, by chance, turned out to be his children. It was believed that the Girl in Red came from outer space, which is why they called her “Stern” (Star). It’s so common now to sometimes hear vulgar curse words “p...”, and it’s funny that the most notorious scoundrels hung heroes’ stars for themselves, while the people came up with a curse word for savior’s from slavery. Now in Ukraine, a 12-14 hour working day is the norm and the trident symbol is SS (Saturn Slaves) on the flags of Satan’s army, which was used to brand the first Russian slaves. In the film “The Elusive Avengers,” fighters of the young Red Guard catch up with the Death Train and, in pursuit, throw it into the Blue Sea (Black). The brave Lads were saved by the knights of the Holy Army. It was believed that The Girl in Red came from “Space” so the Jews were looking for her as Stern (Star) to kill because she took part in the liberation of Kiew. In December 2007, in Mainz, workers of the Catholic Church watched as the righteous and sinners rose from the dead, and Frau with the radiance of a “saint.” There were 40 such saviors of the Planet and all of them were treacherously killed by the Catholic Church. There is only one place where everyone is welcome and accepted as they are - THIS IS HELL.

    The only film I can think of where the words were the least important part of the movie was 2001: A Space Odyssey. The script has only a few pages. Kubrick said the EXPERIENCE could be conveyed only by imagery. He was truly a genius. The original script was long and filled with narration that explained things. But he wanted the film to act on emotion, not intellect of people. That's why many people 'don't get it'. Yes, the idea was by Arthur C. Clarke, the prolific science fiction writer, but the film is not a shooting of his book. The film and the book are quite different. it was one of the most unusual collaboration in the movies ever.
    It still stands today as my favorite movie of all time.

    • @grantmalone
      @grantmalone 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree that it was conveyed only by imagery. Music and sound does half the work in 2001. He pilfered from the best to elevate his images.

    Steven has a point about writing and storytelling, most good directors are not good writers, and vice versa. Directors have been given too much power; it is hard to see how the movies are better for. A show like Breaking Bad, has good writers and good directors, you need that balance, yin and yang.

      More specifically, upon winning her second Oscar she said "The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it. And I can't deny the fact that you like me. Right now, you like me!"
      Spielberg had been nominated a few times and lost, and notably his film The Color Purple had been nominated for ten awards including Best Picture, but _not_ for Best Director, leading many including him to believe that the Academy really didn't like him. This award went some way to rectifying that.

    After viewing this video I have come to the conclusion that the technical / engineering aspects of the Irving Thalberg Award is very bad! The artistic ugly statue( sorry but the face looks seriously depressed and / or angry ) It could cause injury to the recipients ! It does not stand up on its own during the filming of the live broadcasted Award Show! You could literally fracture your foot from the statue inadvertently falling down!
