ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.o...
“There are no small parts, there are only small actors “ this is the most beautiful words for aspiring actors.
I am in a play this Christmas, and i got two "small" roles, both together has 5 paragraphs worth of lines divided between 3 scenes.
I have spend 3 months now perfecting those lines, and i will spend 2 more before the first showing.
These roles are the first roles in years that hasnt been the main role, but i will pour all the effort i have put into my previous roles into these two.
If i cant spend as much time on the stage to show of, i will promise you all the effort and skill will go into these 3 scenes, and the whole audience will remember me.
William Holden (Paraphrased): "You used to be in pictures! You used to be big!"
Gloria Swanson: "I AM big ~ it's the pictures that got small"
(Sunset Boulevard)
He was quoting Stanislawksy. And it's false.
It's easy for him to say that because he's had nothing but starring and lead roles for over 40 years.
@@auspiciouskaktus2692 Its more of an attitude you need.
As someone who hasnt only had lead roles for over 40 years, the mentality of "there are no small parts" helps with the moral of the group.
Am personally someone who likes to be on stage and want to get in as much rehearsal as i can, so i would love to have the lead as much as i can. But that isnt the world we live in. Am in a small group with a wide skill spectrum, so even if i am good, i cant hog the spotlight from those who might not be as good, but need the practice.
But its not a big deal, because there are no small parts.
Even if i am only on stage for two or three scenes, that only means i have all the time to perfect those scenes, and make them as close to flawless as i can.
If i had the mindset that i need to get the large parts, i would be filled with jealousy and spite, and that would affect my mood and attitude, and in acting, those are the most important attributes you need.
It is a fact that all parts are needed in a play, but not all parts are equally as important, but none of them are small.
Someone please give this man a glass of water.
It's okay, he is rich and doesn't have to care what others think.
If you look closely enough, you'll notice that he has a blue water bottle right behind him on the small desk.
@@F55-is when I’m at a conference or lecture , I’ve seen people discreetly put a glass or bottle of water on the lectern at arms length . Come to think about it , it’s a common practise . Tom Hanks has done a lot for the audience, with just 18 minutes there giving precious coaching.

Tom Hanks was there longer. Oxford Union divided his appearance into several videos.
Tom Hanks is hands down the best actor to ever live . His range is like no other . Thanks Tom !
I was desperate for Tom to get a drink of water- he was clearly suffering from a rotten cold and had to keep clearing his throat. I've always loved Tom Hanks - seen so many interviews and he's so down to earth. Would love to meet him some day!
What I love about hanks is that he always shows up. He’s plugged in.

Even with a cold..
its like hes been teaching for 30 years.. just a naturally talented person whos good at everything he does.
Yep.
But how do you know he didn't prepare for the class?
Such an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity, and everyone in the audience is doing exactly what Tom said not to do at the beginning; being self conscious and not committing to the emotions. I didn't see a single person even attempt to give a reasonable performance.
Very true, but also, these are young college students. As somebody who did lots of plays in high school, I definitely can tell you that sitting here now at 37 years young (sorry, had to do it--my daily dad joke), I see the world very differently than I did at 17 or 18, or even 21. That self-consciousness tends to more easily melt away much more now than it did then because life humbles you and teaches you that you have to be you, no matter the circumstance. You have to be authentic, and be bold, because if you're not, then you aren't fully experiencing everything there is to experience. When you are a teen or young adult, you usually haven't dealt with enough of those scenarios Mr. Hanks was referring to in order to fully engage in its reality. But when you yourself have worked those boring jobs for many years, or been in difficult situations with difficult people, then you are less afraid to commit to that type of exercise. It takes time.. they'll get it eventually
Of course you didn’t see many people at all. Most were out of camera
Exactly. Most brain-dead, unforgivably lazy, students ever.
Yeah all smiling while attempting to act angry.

The opportunity standing right in front of these kids-in the form of Hanks-flew right over their heads. Just like the event coordinator didn’t think to have a couple of bottles of water on hand.
One can see bottles of water at the table behind them on the little stage, but what one cannot see is the common sense or initiative of the organizers or anyone for that matter to get up and open one of those bottles and just keep it quietly on the podium by his side
This was awesome and so kind of Tom Hanks to do this 🙌 🙏
I really loved that said ‘a packet of CRISPS’ because he’s in the UK ❤ 🙇♀️
The energy when he entered the room...wow
He is so amazing. Look at how many ways he can say one thought. His inflection, demeanor etc. was new with each repetition.

It blows my mind that noone who helped organize this thing thought "lemme run up there real quick and hand him a water."

Didn't sound like dry throat. He sounded nasally.
Is there ___ I can do for you ? (something - wrong /anything- correct ). So next lesson is grammar and this time, it is you Tom who should be lectured :).
It sounded like he had a cold but don't consider things as a youtube commenter where you can hyper analyze the situation. Put yourself in the room. You're the organizer and Tom Hanks is repeatedly coughing and/or clearing his throat.
You hand him a water as a gesture. It doesn't need to work. It's a gesture.
Just can't believe noone did it. Not even someone from his team. lol @@HigherPlanes
@@BrokenGlassesGaming Good point. I'm also surprised no one handed him a glass of water. Usually there's one already present on the podium for the speaker.
I’m so glad he was honest about not taking Acting classes. To anyone out there that wants to be an actor yes, it is beneficial to take Acting classes to get used to people to learn new things, but in all honesty, those things that you are being taught can be learned by yourself, there are actors out here that are self taught. You have to think about it your teachers may have been taught a technique or read a technique in a book and their teaching it to you for money and they don’t take classes ninetimes out of ten for acting themselves. You can do the same exact thing as long as you love the arts of Acting and you’re constantly reading about techniques and watching your favorite actors on how they act and you take their advice you can do it.
He is so right about actors in older films really giving their all in smaller roles. I watched a movie last night starring Jimmy Stewart and Robert Young, in which the bartender of a joint runs out and says a line to Jimmy Stewart and a pal of his. His emotion and convincing delivery was so good that I had to rewind and watch it again. Back then -- in most films -- even the smallest actors tried their hardest at their job. I think that should be revived. Great talk! 👍👍👌
I totally agree; and those western actors who played the baddies did a superb job of squeezing every inch of badness into every word and nuance. It's also gestures. ( e.g: James Coburn 👌). ☺️🤠🏜

Dear Oxford Union,
The world looks to institutions like yours for transparency, integrity, and a commitment to truth. By releasing the full video, you not only honor these principles but also reaffirm your dedication to fostering open dialogue and accountability. The global community deserves the opportunity to see and evaluate the full context, as withholding it risks undermining trust in the values you stand for.
This is not just about one event-it's about setting a precedent for future generations, ensuring that honesty and fairness prevail. Please do the right thing and release the full video. History will remember your choice.
Sincerely,
A hopeful believer in truth and justice
I once saw an open air play when I was 15 years old.
There were just two actors on a wooden raft doing a scene from Huckleberry Finn.
When they finished their scene, the people didn't applaud.
That's when the director said, Okay, Tom, you can start getting these props loaded up. We're done here.
And that's when I thought to myself, I never want to be an actor.
I bet Tom Hanks remembers that day in Greater Cleveland, when he was working his first job.
Repetitions.
He did not attend formal classes, but he still learned.

Fantastic! Tom Hanks starred in a movie where he was by himself on a deserted island. He visited with a soccer ball and extracted a tooth with an ice skate. He’s had a tremendous career! Nice lesson/lecture.
Epstein Island 🫢
The ball was named "Wilson". The scene when the ball floats away haunts me to this day.
The Burbs is my all time favourite movie. Sooooo many memorable one liners, delivered to perfection 🤩
Hes a trooper. Clearly under the weather. Probably on his calendar for weeks or months, could have easily rescheduled this. Hes tom hanks! Theyll wait. But he kept up his end of the deal. Reliable in every movie hes in, reliable in life.
-"Is there something i can do for you?"
-"Coffee coffee! Please, sir, i need some more coffee!"
Not only an acting lesson - a life lesson as well!
What a really incredible exercise that he took everyone. Even as a viewer of a movie or television show or playing , I now have a new appreciation for the way a line can be delivered. And I honestly think this is a wonderful way to be aware of communication. For example, if you're having trouble with a partner and you can hear different tone of voice or expression or with a boss or a co-worker so many different ways. You can apply this information in your daily life. Truly a brilliant presentation to betty was coughing and messing up his lines and he should have had those statements written down so he could repeat them. I think he showed you what to not do and not be competent or rehearsed and ready. And this was a speech to give and it sounds like a speech. He's given many times so that's why he missed spoke. But he's an actor and he should have made it seem like it was the first time he was delivering it and it was unique to this group so there's a part of me that thinks he failed in his proficiency but I think it was wonderful information. I would not give him an a plus on this. B.Perhaps. Or even?
Be minus.
That is really sweet of Tom to do that for these people! Such a great actor and person!
Media made acting so big that now people are watching an actor giving a lecture…dilemma of society…we take actors so seriously today and we just forgot engineers, teachers, scientists , doctors , scholars and a damn actor replaced all of them…damn world…such a pity.
You're missing the point completely. @@gennietayfer7514
Tom Hanks is not just a national treasure. He is a world treasure.
Something the Oxford Union can do for the viewers is to give the guest speaker a headset and shut off the podium mics, so the movements aren’t echoing and thumping through the entire video.
True!
Exactly what I thought.
I gave a man a bowl of soup and he asked me, "Where is the bread?".
I complied and gave bread and he asked, "Don't you have any meat?"
I bought some meat for the man and still he wasn't sated and asked if he could have a cushion for his seat.
I responded that some hunger can never be satisfied and comfort merely a perspective.
The only way to happiness is through gratitude and appreciation, in nature and in ourselves.

I think one of the best roles Tom has played so far is Otto. I feel that this role has so many facets. Anyone else?
It was good, but you should watch the original Swedish version, A Man Called Ove. It has subtleties and nuance that the remake stripped away. It is also far truer to the book. Hanks is great, but on this one I’d give it to the original actor.
Otto was more Hollywoodised n Ove was so true to the cultural difference, his belligerence, Ove softening, the pain he is going through.
Ove was so raw and brought out the nuances of the way Ove was and still made us feel empathy towards him.
Tom Hanks was surely amazing as Otto but I loved him from the word go even though he was obnoxious at 1st.

As somebody who grew up watching his silliness on bosom buddies, really makes me smile
"....you can't be self conscious. You can't care about what you look like or sound like. But you must tell the truth."
Perhaps this is why so many in the acting profession seem so lacking in self awareness, and at the same time so convinced they are right about everything, even when the cameras aren't rolling and they don't have someone else's words to speak from a script.
Don't get me wrong, I think Tom is a fine actor. I've enjoyed his work many times. And his advice is probably good for anyone wanting to be a professional pretender.
On the other hand, I think actors like Jack Nicolson cared very much how he looked and what he sounded like.
Daniel Day-Lewis is all about method like immersion, Alec Guinness never cared for that stuff at all. Both great actors.
So much of it all seems to depend on personality, imagination, and untrainable charisma. "Can't even say exactly why, but the camera just loves this guy"
There don't seem to be any real absolute rules.
I’ve got this on loop while I study. It’s so smooth!
What Tom has demonstrated so well here, is the very basics of acting. It seems easy but it’s not.
It is a bit like painting from imagination, you have to just be able to let go, it is definitely not easy, even the smallest sentence, if it is not real, will look so bad.

TOM IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTORS IN THIS CENTURY. HE IS ELECTRIC ACTOR
I had a chance to act with him back in the 1980’s, as me and my family were long time friends of Donna Dixon (who lived near me in Lorton, Va) and was on the show, “Bosom Buddies” with Tom…. Well, Her dad, Earl Dixon, offered to fly me out to Ca and do a part on the show. I was only about 18 then and didnt want to go alone but my mom (who sang in a band and at times, at Earl’s bar “Hillbilly Heaven” in Lorton, va) was unable to go with me so i said no thanks. Dumbest decision of my life.

One thing he didn't talk about was.How you can add space between the words to change the whole look and feel of it and tone of it. Do.
