In the instant series, he gave up all inhibitions and attacked West Indies bowlers with all types of shots. He is truly a legend. Sunny Gavaskar had all the shots in the book and could play the hook shot as well as anyone else you care to name. For a large part of his career he curbed many of the riskier strokes mainly because the Indian team relied heavily on its batting strengths since the bowling for most part of the 80s and 90s was not good enough to get an international side out twice in a test match . It would have been a dream if he could have played in today's Indian side opening with Rohit Sharma at the other end !
I saw Gavaskar scored a century here in 3 hours and that’s this match . Usually he takes more than a day to score a century but this test was special for him . He played so quick here vengsarkar also scored century here in this innings .

And yes, I do remember Bradman as a great but he did not have to struggle against many of those handicaps and the only series that he had to, the 'infamous' bodyline series (Sunny faced that all his ligfe against West Indies and Australia), his average was reduced to 50!

To face demon fast bowlers like Dennis Lille Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts without helmets and any safety gadget fittings was really a great achievement. The only real difference in modern cricket is the tremendous improvement in Ground fielding, with the advent of Limited overs cricket.

Absolute annihilation is a strong word. Except for Amarnath the Indian batting did pretty well. Actually apart from the total failure in the 1st test they only lost two sessions in the series. One in Ahmedabad and other in Calcutta. Compared to other teams India was actually one of the better teams against them with Pakistan being the other

As a school boy, I used to go to our neighbour 's house to watch this match live on TV, as we did not have one at that time! It was a great feeling to watch some of it again, after a long time span of almost four decades !
Fantastic Counter attacking 100 from SG and also brought him on par with Don Bradman with 29 100..At 7:30 -45 ...SG last century at Kotla came too vs WI in 1979.. But SG scored another 100 (115) after that Kotla vs Australia in 1979 Oct...The last of only 2 occasion GR Vishwanath and SG scored 100 together in an innings.. first one was that famous World Record chase at POS in 1976, when we scored 403/3...SG 102, GRV 112....
If anyone remember the first test at Kanpur, Gavaskar bat went flying and Marshall destroyed India. Vengsarkar was the only guy who was able to bat with confidence against the almighty West Indies. Gavaskar came back with vengeance and he and Vengsarkar destroyed West Indies. India 0-3 though. Gavaskar scored 236 in Madras.

The most successful batsman against the full strength pace attack of WI was Graham Gooch, he scored over 2k runs averaging 45 with 6 centuries. Gavaskar, when playing against Marshall, Garner, Holding and Roberts combined, scored 813 runs@40.65 with 3 tons. The rest 10 centuries came when the quartet hadn't even debuted, including 4 during Gavaskar's debut series in '71, rested as during the '76 tour when he scored 2 centuries or had defected to the WSC as seen during the '78-79 home series when he scored 4 centuries in 6 tests. The most successful Indian batsman against the full fledged attack was Dilip Vengasarkar with around 1500 runs@44 and 4 centuries and when touring, Mohinder Amarnath was the most successful with 700 runs@63 and 2 centuries.

West Indies won the 6 match series 3-0. All three were innings victories. Marshall and Holding made the Indian batsmen s*it their pants in Kanpur and Kolkata. One Marshall delivery broke Gavaskar's bat and ripped it out of his hands.

I was in 10th standard at that time. The TV station in our city had not been started yet. I listened the radio commentary of this match ... Feeling very happy to see those moments in the video format on TH-cam after so many years. To score such a classy century against a very deadly attack shows the class of Sunil Gavaskar's batting. He was a great opening batsman.
Watching Gavaskar bat at a strike rate of over 100 in a test match, Viv Richards must be wondering "did he have an argument with his wife last night or is he drunk !!!!!"
I was not even born when this match was played. But got to know from others who watched the match. SUNIL GAVASKAR avoided playing the hook shot as there was risk involved and his wicket was valuable for INDIA. But just on the previous test match the bat fell down from his hand on MARSHALL'S delivery and he had to face some sarcasm. But he showed that once he decides to play the shot he could have easily managed it. That is the sign of one of the greatest player who could have controlled the game as per his thoughts.
I remember Gavaskar was in an angry mood. When he went to open the innings ,a particular section of crowd kept on chanting "tere pichae Marshal aa raha hay".Indeed, in earlier matches Gavaskar got out rather cheaply off Marshall's bowling.. Anyway, the continuous booing infuriated Sunil so much that, most uncharacteristically, he went on counterattacking the speedster Malcom Marshall and took great revenge on him.

SG does cop a lot of criticism for being slow.....but one needs to understand that he was the bridge between two eras of Indian batsmanship! The previous generation who believed in grafting and blunting the attack (of course Farrokh Engineers Srikanths Surinder Khannas and others were glorious exceptions) and the current generation which believes in blunting the bowling by going after them...a few losses here and there dont matter. Sunil Gavaskar himself has played quite a few aggressive innings more regularly towards the second half of his career which showed that he was continuously improving his game and adding new dimensions to it. I think Sachin Tendulkar and his generation took the next step...that of attacking the bowling and then the others have galloped forward. Ohh and btw the modelling @16:55 had begun in this era too! and SG led that movement too!

The best cricket team without a shadow of doubt . Absolutely annihilated the Great Indian team which won the World Cup in 1983 . Read in the magazines and now seeing in front of eyes the action unfolding. Absolutely fabulous video irrespective of the quality. Fabulous players like Marshall , Holding , Richards , Haynes etc.
Absolute annihilation is a strong word. Except for Amarnath the Indian batting did pretty well. Actually apart from the total failure in the 1st test they only lost two sessions in the series. One in Ahmedabad and other in Calcutta. Compared to other teams India was actually one of the better teams against them with Pakistan being the other

As a school boy, I used to go to our neighbour 's house to watch this match live on TV, as we did not have one at that time!

Fantastic Counter attacking 100 from SG and also brought him on par with Don Bradman with 29 100..At 7:30 -45 ...SG last century at Kotla came too vs WI in 1979.. But SG scored another 100 (115) after that Kotla vs Australia in 1979 Oct...The last of only 2 occasion GR Vishwanath and SG scored 100 together in an innings.. first one was that famous World Record chase at POS in 1976, when we scored 403/3...SG 102, GRV 112....

If anyone remember the first test at Kanpur, Gavaskar bat went flying and Marshall destroyed India. Vengsarkar was the only guy who was able to bat with confidence against the almighty West Indies.

Garner did not play this series. Roberts played only the 5th and 6th tests. Marshall, Holding, Davis and Daniel played most of the tests.

Priceless upload, Gavaskar has been perhaps most successful batsman against the west indies pace battery. Though despite his batting record, india lost this six match series 3-0. As per wikipedia in one of the test match the spectator pelted with stones and rotten eggs.
The most successful batsman against the full strength pace attack of WI was Graham Gooch, he scored over 2k runs averaging 45 with 6 centuries. Gavaskar, when playing against Marshall, Garner, Holding and Roberts combined, scored 813 runs@40.65 with 3 tons. The rest 10 centuries came when the quartet hadn't even debuted, including 4 during Gavaskar's debut series in '71, rested as during the '76 tour when he scored 2 centuries or had defected to the WSC as seen during the '78-79 home series when he scored 4 centuries in 6 tests. The most successful Indian batsman against the full fledged attack was Dilip Vengasarkar with around 1500 runs@44 and 4 centuries and when touring, Mohinder Amarnath was the most successful with 700 runs@63 and 2 centuries.

Yes, undoubtedly Gavaskar was the best Opening batsman in the World, considering the fact that he had to play a battalion of extra-pace Fast bowlers from W.I., Pak Aus, Eng and so on and that too without wearing a helmet in his whole career
Remember that match as a 17 year old, sunny pulled, hooked, cut and drove the marauding windies pacers and showed the world how to deal with them on a green top in Delhi
I was in 10th standard at that time. The TV station in our city had not been started yet. I listened the radio commentary of this match ... Feeling very happy to see those moments in the video format on TH-cam after so many years. To score such a classy century against a very deadly attack shows the class of Sunil Gavaskar's batting. He was a great opening batsman.

I was not even born when this match was played. But got to know from others who watched the match. SUNIL GAVASKAR avoided playing the hook shot as there was risk involved and his wicket was valuable for INDIA. But just on the previous test match the bat fell down from his hand on MARSHALL'S delivery and he had to face some sarcasm. But he showed that once he decides to play the shot he could have easily managed it. That is the sign of one of the greatest player who could have controlled the game as per his thoughts.

I remember Gavaskar was in an angry mood. When he went to open the innings ,a particular section of crowd kept on chanting "tere pichae Marshal aa raha hay".Indeed, in earlier matches Gavaskar got out rather cheaply off Marshall's bowling.. Anyway, the continuous booing infuriated Sunil so much that, most uncharacteristically, he went on counterattacking the speedster Malcom Marshall and took great revenge on him.

SG does cop a lot of criticism for being slow.....but one needs to understand that he was the bridge between two eras of Indian batsmanship! The previous generation who believed in grafting and blunting the attack (of course Farrokh Engineers Srikanths Surinder Khannas and others were glorious exceptions) and the current generation which believes in blunting the bowling by going after them...a few losses here and there dont matter. Sunil Gavaskar himself has played quite a few aggressive innings more regularly towards the second half of his career which showed that he was continuously improving his game and adding new dimensions to it.
I think Sachin Tendulkar and his generation took the next step...that of attacking the bowling and then the others have galloped forward.
Ohh and btw the modelling @16:55 had begun in this era too! and SG led that movement too!

Kapil paaji failed most of the time's as a batsman in this series particularly in his peak of the career except a half century and two quick thirty odd runs may destined the series although he was wicketless in rare occasions but most importantly Paaji removed important batsmen of WI in each and every innings but India tried many experiments in batting and bowling in this series including Navjot Singh Sidhu, later he told in a video Kapil paaji gave him a chance to represent the country, i can't forget him ❤️
