How can you win a match with such bad luck and poor umpiring, especially when defending such a poor total? What were our batsmen doing during the first half? Had watched this live.Atrocious umpiring cost India this match.Had the umpire given decisions correctly India would have won the match by atleast 20 runs.
What an effort by lion hearted Kapildev.What a superb display of swing bowling.He is best in his days.One or two unfortunate secision by the umpires and few dropped catches. Otherwise the bowling figure would have been much better.
In my view if kapil would play at nz or Australia, he also achieved 450 wkts in 80-85 tests, so not underestimate him, he is also one of the greatest of all time, born in India, the bcci never provided him at-least sporting pitches for all, rather kapil bowled here in India where ball seldom bounced up of the knee, though the great athletes never disappointed. Shame to Indian cricket board.
Remember watching this match live as a kid. It was the best ever bowling by Kapil Dev although he took only 3 wickets but was almost unplayable and beating the bat all the times.
During that era grounds had bigger boundaries , pitches were truly sporting so only good batsman were able to score big runs. Nowadays pitches every where are flatter , boundaries have become smaller , white ball cricket has completely become a batsman's game.
Kapil's bowling figures should have been 6 for 20 (against 3 for 26) in this match for poor umpiring and dropped catches. India could have won this match with Kapil's great bowling. Kapil is definitely the best among 4 great bowling all-rounders of 80s in one dayers. He once ranked FIRST in the world with 631 pts for ICC ODI All-rounder rankings in 1985-86 and the max by Botham Hadlee and Imran were only less than 490 in their lifetime.

Saw the match live.Paaji was unplayable in the 2nd spell.If he hard played more down under he would have had 550plus test wickets. By the by we had a strong team that series but came back empty handed.
Rain stopped us in the test matches along with a few umpiring errors as well as the genius of Allan border. Onedayers... Indians got fatigued in the finals... First final they had a great chance but squandered it with poor finishing... Batsmen got impatient... Second final Aussies outplayed us.
Umpiring was not just below par but looked very partisan....no wonder those cricketers were beneficiaries of friendly umpires and went onto claim as great... Even with tech available, we had to see how third umpired messed up Rohith catch which turned the course of match...in the recent WC odi final.

The unanswered question was why the fat, past it Indian team only made 112?? Oh yes the answer was - the NZ bowlers were to good for them. SIMPLE as that.
Maybe coz 80s was the era of smart bowling rather than hard bowling. Kapil was a huge fan of Malcolm Marshall who unlike his compatriots was barely 5'10 but this disadvantage enabled him to skid the ball around the batsmen and he combined this ability with his natural express pace and accuracy to deadly effect. Sharma too was barely 5'6 unlike Kapil who was 6'1 and his initial performances was pretty consistent, based solely on line-and-length. Sharma was the leading wicket taker in India's 1986 test series win in England. It was the last ball six miandad hit of him at Sharjah which tainted his reputation. Just being out-and-out quick doesn't make one a great bowler. It has liabilities, be it chances of injury, fatigue, exhaustion. Maybe Raju Kulkarni, TA Shekhar even Yuvraj's father Yograj Singh couldn't keep up with the momentum and that's it.

Saw the match live on TV, kapil dev fired, poor umpiring. Newzealand batsmen are completely beaten, jeff crowe was struggling and out in last ball, if he would got out one ball before next ball another NZ wicket would fall. Unlucky Kapil and unlucky India.
Worst umpiring helped new Zealand to win this match., kapilev alone was a good medium pacer who's ability was at international level., India took revenge In2023 with having a proper fast bowling attack supported by standard ground fielding.

This was the phase when Kapil was simply too good on the field and expected high standards from everyone. Veterans like Sunny, Jimmy, Dilip were not exactly the fastest... and fielding was not the core department for Indians , back then... barring Srikanth, Azhar and Kapil there were no sharp fielders in that team of mid 80s...
that not out decision by the umpire has to be one of the worst decisions ever - that ball was not hitting either the off stump or the leg stump. you get the idea.
Really Champions never say die attitude they believe they can defend a small total and tried till the end fought a great sports men inspite of being deprived.and cheating by the umpire.

The umpire Isherkhood was a very biased and controversial Umpire most of his decisions in this series and previous B&H World Series (Ravi Shastri’s Audi car) was against India.Thiw man hated India for no reason

This was the phase when Kapil was simply too good on the field and expected high standards from everyone. Veterans like Sunny, Jimmy, Dilip were not exactly the fastest... and fielding was not the core department for Indians , back then... barring Srikanth, Azhar and Kapil there were no sharp fielders in that team of mid 80s...
