@Michael Bing actually the same market, the electric car market. Tesla single handedly created that market. They kept referring to "other EV manufactures" when they were really referring to Tesla since they're the ones leading this industry with no close second.

He's actually being wrong about the Taycan being the fastest accelerating Porsche production car, not to mention that he should know the 2020 Turbo S is coming (the one that HAS turbo in it) and it is said to have over 70hp more than the 2016 version, which is just 0.1s slower than they Taycan in real tests. I'd be guessing the real Turbo S will be faster than both the 2016 version and the Taycan.

What's so strange to you btw? That someone on the internet will know something that some guy working for Porsche won't know or won't remember at the moment and will make a slightly false statement? He's just a guy, there's nothing strange about that. He should know though, since he's in the US and Car and Driver should be famous enough there (they are listed as the source on wiki), plus it's something that's been known for quite some years. You might think all these guys are some kind of gods, but that's your thing if you like thinking that you're in some way inferior. His job as engineer might not be to know such things, but his job as spokesperson IS to know such things.

Not necessarily. You can operate a computer without internet connection and AOL isn't the only service provider, though this guy does sound American.

That's what I came to say. He's marveling about how far technology has come, in respect to how small a steering wheel they can fit an airbag in, while sitting in one of the most technologically advanced cars on the planet right now.

@@jhutchy These electric cars are not a tech marvel. I will be so glad when people get over this and see them for what a they are. Boiled down, simple transportation compared to ICE. Its batteries and some electric motors. No coolant, no turbos, no exhaust. Its dead simple. The fact that jay is worried about the steering wheel means hes not letting the wow factor get to him. He's remaining critical rather than hur during about the future. Which has been around for 100 years.
Yeah. It says he has the perspective of someone who's been there, done that. He's driven a lot of electric vehicles. So he's not going to get starstruck over a Porsche EV.

The only problem with that scene is that he was calling them out for not being able to have a turbo on the electric engine....

If someone had told me that the mid-1980's false-advertising of the word/term "Turbo" would re-appear, again, in 2020, I would never have believed them. If they had told me that, on top of it, it would be Porsche with the foolery, I would have tried to have them institutionalized. This is as bad as trying to make people feel better about ordering vodka (i.e. no class) by calling any drink with it a Martini; Martinis are made with gin - and 'Turbo' is for cars that have one or more turbos.

The ease the Porsche guy answers questions is pretty reassuring. Not often you see someone who you feel really and truly knows his stuff.
Porsche demand their sales people learn how the cars work and how to drive them. It's not optional.
Calvin is a very pleasant man. I would enjoy sitting and hearing everything he has to say about engineering.

It’s a special video for me. In 2003, i was doing Rc electric 1/10 scale racing cars, on a rc racetrack. In was the porsche gt1 1998 lm winner from tamia. I was 12 years old and it was one of my first vehicule i ever driven. It was monocoque carbon f1 chassis , rear weel drive. A powerfull quiet beast. With slick tyres were scratching in corners. you know nothing about driving, this was the technique that Michael Schumacher famously used, also used by many rally drivers. You can modify the speed easily in two pedal cars once this technique is mastered.

In everyday German, the word "Turbo" is very often used as a synonym for "Fast", "Quick". Mainly because of Porsche... ;-)
E.g.
“Switch on the turbo and walk faster! We are late!”
Not too dissimilar in America, perhaps less common though.
That's instresting, We in Asia also put the "Turbo" sign to everything that go faster than other similar product. We put it in the blenders, water pump, Chainsaw, high performance CPU and highest octane fuel 😁

I think Jay is a huge fan of engineers who really know their stuff, I think the video was long because he just wanted to ask a bazillion tech and mechanical questions. Jay looked quite dapper today as well.
That bloke did a good job of answering all the questions.
Enjoyed this one. He really knew his stuff, and it didn't seem too much like a "commercial", which it often can with newer cars being shown.

I’ve owned this car for a year now and Doug taught me a couple things I didnt know! Very excellent and knowledgeable person to have on the show for the car. This car is just phenomenal! Excited to see where Porsche and EVs in general go from here!

He was in the middle lane, there were no shoulders on that road. That’s exactly where he was supposed to stop, just like big trucks do all the time.
Better him use his car as protection picking up the trash bag versus being hit directly. Overall agree it’s dangerous being in the opposite lane right before a crest.
Just a week ago some wainscoting panels fell out the rear of my bed while turning at a green arrow light , and a fire truck behind me at the light ran over the panels . No one tried to stop while I picked up these two 4x8 sheets out of the Intersection.
I guess he could have left the trash there.
With enough acceleration on tap I suppose you can stop a car any damned place ....light switch acceptation you are RIGHT back up to full speed

I gave up halfway. I found this episode to be a bit boring. It's not a car that I will ever own, even if I could afford it, and I'm a Porsche guy. Too expensive, and I'm not crazy about the front end, which looks like a Saturn SL2. I'd rather have a Model S. Less expensive, has the Supercharger network, and much more practical with the hatchback. More comfortable with better ingress/egress too no doubt.
37 mins is a long advert for Porsche and yet very little compelled me throughout this to want to own this car.

On long videos I always bump up the speed to 1.25. The video goes faster and Jay sounds like he did 20 years ago.

I don’t think it’s new technology so much as stupid gimmicks that exist purely to be different, rather than an actual improvement on a design.
With the door handles I think it’s kind of a double edged sword, the big advantage of retractable door handles is that they make a car much more aerodynamic and therefore you can go further on the same amount of energy, but on the flip side, if you live somewhere cold, it’s hell to open your doors if there’s ice

Mechanical watches are for people who don't care what time it is and need an excuse to wear pointless jewelry.
It's just satisfying to have gears ticking that you can feel, I'm not talking about overpriced gaudy ones. I got my father an antique buck rogers theme pocketwatch and seeing it come alive when i first wound it was amazing. I cant justify buying my own at this time, I will someday when it makes sense. I have a bulova precisionist because the fast millisecond hands are unique and I liked the carbon fiber look, but it's just a large battery powered watch. I like speedmasters and navitimers that aren't too oversized.

He- like most older people- is shrinking with age.
He's getting older and his eye-lids are drooping. An elderly guy I know just had a surgery to fix that and it worked, he looks younger too. Jay definitely needs that surgery, who knows maybe he doesn't know there is a surgery for that or even realize he has that problem. That's what I think it is anyways..

Don't blame him. Electric cars are the most uninspiring vehicles ever. They will cause cars to become a commodity item no different than white goods (ironic given the car in question).

Why - because they don't belch toxic gasses into the environment, make horrific sounds and lean on a crutch like a transmission? Everything you like about ICE is some form of problem or inefficiency. The noise they make - that's wasted energy that could go into going faster. Same as the waste heat. All of that could be funneled into performance. I'd take a silent, superfast car any day over a belching, smoky slow mess.
