THIS is the 1993 Porsche 962. I found this car at Champion Porsche here in Pompano Beach, FL, which has one of the most insane collections of Porsche street cars and race cars you might find outside of Stuttgart. This particular 962 has been sitting in place for 15 years and has just 1 mile on the odometer! It’s one of 6 ever made, and it’s street legal. Today I’m going to go over the quirks and features of this incredibly rare Porsche. Then I’m to take it on a leisurely ride and give it a Doug score. One of the most interesting quirks about this Porsche 962 is this button on the dashboard. It changes the engine mapping and increases power from a “mere” 550hp to eight-hundred-and-fifty horsepower. If you’ve ever been driving around town in your Porsche and thinking, Gee this car could really use another 300hp, well Porsche has that covered for you with this button.

I worked over the road from Vern Schuppan's workshop the early 90's and remember him taking this thing down the pub for lunch. The whole building used to shake when they were warming the engines for the race cars. Epic job.
Yeah well...the Testarossa road car (not the '50s racer car) was started - and therefore most popular with teenagers - in '84 , and the Countach in '74. With this '93 Porsche being 10-20 years younger respectively, its really no comparison. And the people who had Countach posters on the wall as teenagers sure weren't teenagers any more when this came out. On the other hand...consider the design of most cars on the road in the early '70s...then look at the Countach...and you'll see why it was so popular. Sporty, aerodynamic-looking cars were becoming more common by the '90s, so while this is a very nice design, it didn't make such a grand splash on the public consciousness as the Countach did - even if the Countach wasn't really all that fast or handle all that well.
Nothing against Testarossa, but this car uses the chassis of a 962 Porsche which was the evolution of the Porsche 956 that started first time in 1982 at le mans and it won between 1982 and 1987 six times Le Mans. In 1983 with team Vern Schuppan, Al Holbert and Hurley Haywood. The Porsche works team started in 1982 with Jochen Mass, Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell and Jean Louis Schlesser. So when Testarossa came as a production sportscar. This prototype racing had won already 3 Le Mans races and two world championships in sportscar Racing as well for driver and for the marque Porsche. And it did win again in 1994. By the way if I can believe in Brian Long these CR Cars were produced in 1991.
Exactly! You know what he was angling towards lol ”I want to buy this.” I can’t blame him, it’s an awesome looking car! I think the dude should’ve let Jay drive it though. That dude drove it like a grandma.

@X X whoever owns the car does as they wish with the car. As a counter argument to yours I think whoever owns a car they never use is a moron. It was nothing but a commodity then. I'm not suggesting it should be a daily driver but look at all the smoke coming out of it because it never drives. I completely agree that it should meet a lead foot driver, that's it's purpose!
Why do you think many people go crazy after low mile cars? So they can drive them themselves. You cant take your cars to the afterlife. If there even is an afterlife. Who's the loser now?
X X but this isn’t a Lamborghini or a Ferrari, these are reaaaaallllyyyyy rare, If I had the money, I wouldn’t mind buying a car like this even it had like 20000 miles or something
Remember. There are only 6 of these cars. This one being the rarest. I don't think anyone would be worried about a little mileage. This car was almost 3 mil I'm the 90s. This needs at least 100 mile rd trip
962 CR refers to the based car (962C indicating Group C compliant 962 rather than IMSA version). R stands for Road. The car was supposed to be marketed worldwide, they even plan to crash test it to make it US compliant. But the money runs out and he went broke.

One never see proper racecars like this without liveries outside videogames, such a stunning look for the real thing.
I worked over the road from Vern Schuppan's workshop the early 90's and remember him taking this thing down the pub for lunch. The whole building used to shake when they were warming the engines for the race cars. Epic job.
The factory was in High Wycombe
Sometimes l think Jay has said “F1 Maclaren”
more than any human ever
Probably. I'd also like to offer: "Fitted luggage," and "hilarious," to the list.
Palidicio Vermingagurainia he bumps the value of his F1 Maclaren $1k every time he says this
If you had one you would talk about it too.
@@jezuzfreek777 I'd also say it's name the right way round too
Nicely done
I can’t keep looking at his little brothers coat! It’s about to tear
He's a millionaire obviously who put on some lbs. He needs to throw some money in the wardrobe department.
Hahaha! IKR
Really cool that he let jay drive it rather than hiding it away, and a really knowledgeable owner too respect
Lmao they look ridiculous together in the car squished in there
Mr. Roberts Lol true.
At 17:37 he looks like a horse with peanut butter
in his mouth.
Actual not just in the car... Show producers have to make a stand for how people dress up
The owner is wearing the jacket he got when the car was in Le Mans :D
Mr. Roberts : What a terrible, terrible waste of money this car was.
Keep your Testarossas and your Coutaches... This is all I wanted when I was a teenager!
And they still telling you no. You can never have one.
Okay I'll keep my Countach.
@@aussiebloke609 yes!!
Jay would REALLY have to like it to offer to buy Jay can play some serious hardball and he wasn’t shy about this one!
Jay: "Is this thing for sale by any chance?"
LMFAO!
By next year he'll have it in his garage.
Exactly! You know what he was angling towards lol ”I want to buy this.” I can’t blame him, it’s an awesome looking car! I think the dude should’ve let Jay drive it though. That dude drove it like a grandma.
@@killerbs420 Jay was the one driving it
Jay drove it
@@killerbs420 Jay was driving, and you don't drive a 30 year old car with 1 mile on it any other way.
Tom's Tools true lol
I'll never see a can of sardines without thinking about you guys in that car❗
Man they should make more of these. Absolutely a work of art.
Mr Leno.....thank for the comment "it's a hybrid, it uses gas n' we get on the road it uses even more gas" that has got me smiling THANK YOU again.
Verne Schuppan used to live down the road from me as a kid, I never really understood who he was, he was just the cool guy with the cool cars hahahahaha
One of the best racing driver to come from Australia.
That's if the Aussies aren't trying to claim Denny Hulme, Chris Amon, Bruce McLaren, Scott Dixon Paul Radisich, Jim Richards Greg Murphy etc etc etc!
So what were the cool cars he had living in a suburban neighborhood?
tripasnipa lol #triggered
#lol
I saw this car at Daytona. It is beautiful beyond words.
Love that from Jay, "These were built in Australia?!? Oh, right, the UK. OK, good".
Incredibly sad that it’s never been driven in anger.
@X X
X Xyoure half right. half. not all the way. high mileage f40s go for millions kid. just not your uncles f355 haha..
Remember. There are only 6 of these cars. This one being the rarest. I don't think anyone would be worried about a little mileage. This car was almost 3 mil I'm the 90s. This needs at least 100 mile rd trip
Big respect Matthew for letting Jay drive such an amazing car with only 1 mile on it!
962 CR refers to the based car (962C indicating Group C compliant 962 rather than IMSA version). R stands for Road. The car was supposed to be marketed worldwide, they even plan to crash test it to make it US compliant. But the money runs out and he went broke.
quoting wikipedia and other sites wont make you smart
@@RoverWaters Try find that in Wikipedia. It seems I have a fan that keeps commenting me. Good for you.
Best channel on TH-cam..hell best channel period!!!
What an amazing ride. Thanks for sharing. The miles went up the smiles went up and the value also went up. It is far more desirable than it was just sitting there as art.......
One of the most beautiful cars ever made
before watching this video i wouldve thought this was like a kit car or something. It looks out of this world, especially for 93.
That car is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you, Mr Ivanhoe, for sharing this with Jay and all of us! AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!!!
Never knew this existed... Great, great episode.
'built in 1993, the same year this jacket was tailored for me ...'
DEAD
LMAO
What a daddy's money shithead
Ouch! Good guest though. Very knowledgeable.
I just noticed his sleeves lmao
The appearance of this car hits me with a visceral involuntary carlust. It is beautiful!
dude is freaking out lol! then Jay takes his hands off the wheel 😂
Same thing I thought
6 962 CR were made. 1 is lost due to fire. 3 cars remained in Japan, 1 in UK and this example in US.
The Wakz yea what a waste of a car
i'd like to see you going faster than Jay did on 30 year old tires.
you can't be serious? no wait...you are serious? .... you do realize old rubber will loose its elasticity and began to dry-rot? going faster than Jay did the tire will probably disintegrate and cause massive damaged to a irreplaceable car.
did you even watch the video??? 22:27
FrankW1029 sort of. I was getting ready this morning while it played. Just caught that. Yea this guy is an idiot.
Not a big car guy, but still know a few. Never seen or heard of this before. Very special. Just hang it on the wall and enjoy the piece of art from time to time.
Value of this car just doubled to $4 million.
I always love Leno's Canadian tuxedos
That is the coolest car I have ever seen. Ever. It's like an F40 but exaggerated and racey. Incredible.
This man has a beard on his chest
Sounds like you're turned on by it lol.Sorry man I was just fooling with you.
70's carpet🤣🤣🤣
Dayvid No soy boy there.
No doubt you have personal experience.
Hairy like a garment.
OMG i love Porsche all my life, been even in house where Ferdinand was born... And this black angel art brings tears to my eyes... Thank you guys that i can see this :)
I've watched many of these now and some of Jay's knowledge is starting to rub off on me, which is nothing less than delightful
Get that guy a jacket that fits
Slim fit only looks good on people who are actually slim.
He is a car salesman for the super rich. They all dress ridiculously basically. Probably spend a few grand on the whole outfit too. Weird crowd.
Big guy in a tiny jacket ! Channelling the Tommy Boy movie 😂
Get him a car that fits
Everyone's complaining about the jacket and all I can think is whoa that chest hair. You need a machete to cut that.
Wow the guy actually let jay Leno drive the car before he ever drove it. Crazy. I actually have no idea who is driving. Not once do you see hands on wheels lol. But jay’s comment about direct steering makes me believe he is driving.
The one mile thing really really annoyed me, then he agreed to let Jay drive it and I melted! Now I completely love the guy.
Next time we see this one it’ll be right after Jay cuts this guy a check.
Jay never disappoints me on Sunday
"You can feel the Porsche connection" while almost setting on top of each other lmao. Awesome car, awesome guy. So glad we got to see it driving and not just a static sry piece
17:00 notice how the transmission/engine are part of the chassis with the suspension attached to them
Nice to see the car getting a few new miles on it - always a shame to see a great car get hidden away as opposed to being used.
I had a porsche book when I was a kid and when I saw this in it I was awestruck. This has to be one of the most beautiful cars in the world
OH. MY. GOD. Best car ever! Road legal version of the car that held the record on the Nürburgring for over 30 years.
The Nurburgring record was actually set by a 956.
@@dodecahedron1 Yeah Dauer was full bonkers. It was much more capable than Schuppan. Because there was no need for Le Mans level of downforce street version Dauer is faster than race car variant. Power was also increased because no limitations and rules. Ofcourse this is no way negative toward Schuppan, Dauer was in another league.
Someone buy that man an adult sized jacket.
the sleeves are a little short
XDDD, asap!
lmao
It is a bit George Costanza-ish
I dunno. Here in Britain, we sometimes have the cropped sports jacket look. Cropped at the hip and then the sleeves to show the shirt underneath
I so appreciate these videos, they teach me so much as an instructor of motor vehicle technology if only more students in the field would watch them too.
That car is lower than my self esteem
Lmao
Close
that sucks
It could be digging a hole in the ground and it would still be higher than my self esteem. But i make up for it with self confidence. I'm confident that I'm completely worthless.
I wont like this comment because it has 69 likes but know that i would 've liked it
I was going to say. I could tell Jay was really interested in this car from the get-go. Then at the end asks if it's for sale. :)
Hilarious seeing two big guys squeezing in that car! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Wow! Well this must be one of the most interesting episodes I've seen so far on this channel, thanks Jay. What a story! Just love the knowledge sharing and the history behind this unique piece of art. Nice and snug inside hey? Hahahaha. Symphony of Cacophony inside, heaven!
Omg!!! THEY DIDN'T FLOOR IT!? AAAAHHHHHHH. THE PAIN!
I was waiting, if anybody were to do it it was going to be a leno
It needs to be broken in, it's like a virgin ya know 🙄
The engine is too new. Must be broken in first.
@@ominous-omnipresent-they I was thinking that the right bank may have some piston rings problems. I know its running on race fuel, but only the right side exhaust was blowing smoke.
Didn't you hear Jay say "I bet it's on the original tyres" guy says yep!
If Jay brings up the McLaren F1 you know you've got something special.
Ok so i find my dream car... Its one in the world... OMG thats so perfect!
Gorgeous automobile, but why didn’t you even once show the interior?
The interior shot of the transmission shifter showed us why - it's a stripped-down interior, built for racing.
maybe because there was nothing to show, these cars don't really have anything inside, just a seat a shifter and a steering wheel, the racing models would have the ECUs there, but really they've always been empty, kept to be entirely functional
Cant fit the camera 😅
1 mile? Drive it! Cool to see the owner get it out on a road. Jay has the coolest job ever....
Looks like they're flying coach.
Own a super expensive car but don't own a trimmer or a coat that fits 😋 So distracted by that lawn.
Still, an amazing car
But he's very proud of his lawn......!!!
Ummmm he is a MAN that has hair...geez. Men are getting more feminine every day.

What's with all the comments about chest hair? Everybody's so damn fragile these days. I guess everybody must adhere to the same fashion and grooming trend or suffer shame from nitwits.
