Today we take a deep dive into GoldenEye's most luck dependant speedrun. Players spend hundreds of hours grinding this short level, hoping for the numbers to go their way.
Thanks heaps to Henrik Norgren for helping out with some technical details.

To clear up some confusion about probabilities something needs to be understood. The fact that there are 6 possible outcomes does NOT mean that each outcome is equally probable. You cannot just divide 100 by 6 and claim that's the odds of an escape point being chosen. That is not how RNG, or even probability in general works.

There is a quote I heard once: "There is nothing that wastes more time than trying to save time." It kind of fits here. And I don't mean that they're wasting their time on doing speedruns or anything like that, because those people are incredible. I just mean that they spend all this time after having the talents and techniques already mostly down on even the smallest chance that things line up more or less perfectly. And that's some serious dedication!

I don't Speed Run. I just stumbled across your videos and started liking them. Speedrunning breaks down almost all elements of the game and I find it fun to see how people try to gain even a fraction of a second. Keep it up! Very enjoyable content.

Interestingly, he also said that if you get to the escape boat too fast, the hostages won't have time to reach their escape checkpoint during your fadeout. So in that case, you DON'T want to do that as quick as possible.

You're spot on in this video. I've been replaying the game lately, and I've encountered some of the mechanics you mentioned here being wierd. In Frigate, I shot the bridge hostage taker, and then retreated, but when I re-entered the room, the hostage was still standing still, despite there being nobody else in the room. I later found the right guard at a staircase, and after I killed him, THEN the hostage was released.
Also, in Control, I was almost to the hacking portion, when I tried to get Natalya to come through the door, I saw her text box, then turned around, but didn't hear a door open. I turn back around, she's standing right behind me. I guess while she was unloaded, she ghost walked through the door to join me.

"insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" - Albert Einstein
    Speedrunners: "No" 🤭
Ps: every runner has their game or level with RNG that almost drives one crazy. Grinding over & over again to scratch off a couple of frames, but when it finnaly happens and one achieves the time, the feeling of joy is just incredible 😁

    "Never say never".
Even if no one has gotten a faster rescue time in over 20 years, it doesn't mean it can't happen / be done. Perhaps one day someone finds a way to interact with the guards from the outside, glitch the hostages or whatever, making a sub-22 possible.
