Just some constructive criticism here. The main reason your falling behind on your friend is your not getting your braking done before you start turning. You’re losing all your speed because you’re turning in early and braking too late, which will cause loss of speed through the corners. Don’t be afraid to hammer the brakes hard before approaching the turns while you’re still moving straight, but don’t dive down low and turn in too early. Stay well to the outside of the turn and resist early turn-in. Once your braking is complete, make your turn-in toward the apex. Congrats on the BRZ. Glad to see you are enjoying it and having fun. These BRZs were setup from the beginning to happily slide around on their skinny tires and soft suspensions, which makes for a very fun experience. Also, the price point and having a warranty makes it easy to send it into any corner at the track with a smile on your face and no worries. I think that freedom and the way the car is setup to slide around excites you. To be fair, your 997 had a lot of issues from day one from the previous owner, which I think already set your mind up to worry about it. You probably never felt worry free driving it, especially at the track. Porsches are much more serious cars all around both in price and handling setup. This makes for a serious machine to handle versus a fun toy to drive. That mindset has a lot to do with how you attack a track and whether or not you have more fun. I have dozens of track days on my 997 C4S and love the way it handles. After driving my brothers 1st gen BRZ, it was fun, but the 997 is on a whole other level and I would never trade my 997 for a BRZ. That's just me though. Great content, keep up the good work!

When you said that you're having a lot more fun in this than the 997, is that because you're able to push this car more to the limit? Or was a cost / maintenance thing where you couldn't track the Porsche as often (previous to it having issues).
Even without the reliability issues of the 997, it's just not a very playful car at the limit. Both cars understeer but the BRZ's can be neutralized with the throttle. That makes all the difference for my driving style.

Everything else is bells and whistles I don't really need!
How did you handle the engine break in period? I'll be buying a GR86, first time owning a new car. I plan to track and abuse the car frequently throughout its life, so I'd like to make sure I get a proper piston ring seal so that it is reliable into old age and makes good power. This is what I've heard online and am planning on doing for the break in, but not sure if there are better recommendations: 1. The engine should already be mostly broken in at the factory, after which it's filled with synthetic oil and the car is sent for delivery 2. Immediately after reception (~0 miles), drain the stock synthetic oil and fill it up with conventional oil (because synthetic oil is not good for allowing the piston rings from finishing sealing if needed) 3. For miles 0 -> 50, drive it up to medium (50%) load, under 4000rpm. Spending a lot of time in load and engine braking (vaccum) states, and keeping the RPM varying. (this is where the bulk of the piston ring sealing takes place, if not completed from factory) 4. If using conventional oil, can dump it after 50-100 miles and put synthetic back in 5. For miles 50 -> 1000, continue to drive it under 4000rpm, increasing the peak load used gradually until reaching 100% allowed at 1000 miles. Spending a lot of time in load and engine braking (vaccum) states, and keeping the RPM varying. This step seems more hand-wavy what the point is and can probably be done from 50 -> 500, but going to 1000 couldn't hurt. 6. For miles 1000 -> ♾ go ham Am I overthinking this?
I need to follow up Why the hell would Toyota put oil that's not good for breaking in the engine into the engine to break it in? I'm so confused dude haha
@Jamie I can't tell you for sure, you'll have to ask them, but if you want theories, most people don't want to have to change their oil soon after buying a new car, and a lot of them probably won't. So they go with the compromise of putting in synthetic and list an extra long break in period.
@@komodoensis-rex here’s the thing, all that shit you read online is just that. Shit. There’s many ways to break a car in, you could flog it out the dealership lot or baby it and never exceed 3k rpm. There isn’t true solid evidence or methods to break in that will “100%” give you a perfect piston seal. I wouldn’t even take the owners manual to heart. You think Subaru lawyers will tell you to rev the piss out of every gear during break in? 4k rpm and above is where the fun is at with these engines, seems a lot like a cover the company’s ass thing here. Honestly, just hope that your car from factory has been gapped correctly since that’s by far the largest contributor to good seals. If you have an ounce of mechanical sympathy, your first few oil changes should be sent off for analysis. That could tell you stuff about how the motor is running in.
Are you able to monitor water and oil temp in track mode like the GR86 in the left screen? I noticed a potential difference there (I'd prefer the digital water/oil readings).
I'm not a fan of having/making payments. I've always bought cars all cash, never financed anything. This car is making me do so. Hopefully April timeframe I'll be able to :p
Have you looked into any big brake kits or suspension options? You've experienced the joys of JRZs, but those are pricey! As for brakes I want to go with AP Racing, but their sprint kit has been out for over 10 years. It's tried and true, but they're due for an update imo.
A lot of people are saying MCS > JRZ nowadays so I'm leaning towards those. For brakes I'm considering Stoptech but open to AP Racing for the right price.
@@Zygrene Gotcha. I'll have to look into MCS, I've heard a lot about them over the years. I was also wondering what you thought about rev hang? On the forums, people say they definitely notice it. I'm just not sure how much of an annoyance it is. Also don't know if it can be tuned out?
How were oil temps out on track? In the texas heat my temps were stuck in the 250-265 range so I usually did cool down laps out of fear for my motor haha.
@@Zygrene Ah, My 2020 has 190 and 270 on the digital gauge. It sits pretty close to 270F when I have the attention span to look down. But I’m also tuned on Ecutek so I have my phone connected for all of the other readings like oil temp/AFR/Coolant temp.

You weren't doing the process correctly. You have a limited amount of time once the ignition turns on (so prep it first then press ignition). Timing is key. Look for the seat belt warning light (cluster?). You don't need to insert the seatbelt all the way, just enough to shut off the seatbelt warning light and chime. For some reason I only have to click it once now. I do this everyday since I don't have a passenger seat lol.

@@dlombana161 90 percent of the driving you do is commuting. get the more comfortable base tire for everyday and buy a real pair of track tires and pads with the money saved.
@@smilepermile8165 Which is why unless you needed the heated interior just get the cheaper trim. Buy better pads and tires for the track or autocross. Then you have the more comfortable tire for commuting and everyday driving.
Thanks guys. Im also going to upgrade suspension (thinking Silvers Neomax ) and brakes (Alcon / AP Racing ) do you think it’s ok to just upgrade the front brakes and just do pads and break lines on the rear ? Controversial question 🤷♂️
nice driving !! wish u all the best with the car👍
Well done, can’t wait for mine to get here!!!
Suweeet driving and vid! Loved the s2k commentary.
I gotta take it to the track !
great stuff, glad to see you are loving the BRZ! How the heck did Seigo get his hands on a TRD wing already??!
You can already buy them brand new
Do you have the link for the trd wing?
@@Zygrene that's awesome news, coming from a BRZ Premium (base model) I think I would be totally content with a base GR86 and not feel the need to pay extra for a GR86 Premium, if I can add the 2 items from the Premium trim that I actually would want: the duckbill wing, and the aluminum pedals.
This is what I've heard online and am planning on doing for the break in, but not sure if there are better recommendations:
1. The engine should already be mostly broken in at the factory, after which it's filled with synthetic oil and the car is sent for delivery
2. Immediately after reception (~0 miles), drain the stock synthetic oil and fill it up with conventional oil (because synthetic oil is not good for allowing the piston rings from finishing sealing if needed)
3. For miles 0 -> 50, drive it up to medium (50%) load, under 4000rpm. Spending a lot of time in load and engine braking (vaccum) states, and keeping the RPM varying. (this is where the bulk of the piston ring sealing takes place, if not completed from factory)
4. If using conventional oil, can dump it after 50-100 miles and put synthetic back in
6. For miles 1000 -> ♾ go ham
Am I overthinking this?
"Am I overthinking this?"
Yes
He did a long ass road trip which helped
I need to follow up
Why the hell would Toyota put oil that's not good for breaking in the engine into the engine to break it in?
I'm so confused dude haha
@Jamie
I can't tell you for sure, you'll have to ask them, but if you want theories, most people don't want to have to change their oil soon after buying a new car, and a lot of them probably won't.
That could tell you stuff about how the motor is running in.
lol...the initial D music... totally something i'd wanna do on the track too
I'm excited to see how the FA24 responds once tuning is available.
A header/tune could add a nice 20-30whp which is a nice bump. E85 add a bit extra.
Are you able to monitor water and oil temp in track mode like the GR86 in the left screen? I noticed a potential difference there (I'd prefer the digital water/oil readings).
Not to my knowledge. Left side gauge can be set to show oil temp but it doesn't provide an exact number.
Can you have the brake pads part# posted, looking to buy the same pads when my vehicle arrives
Hey which powerstop pads you using?
I'm not a fan of having/making payments. I've always bought cars all cash, never financed anything. This car is making me do so. Seeing just how comparable it is to the S2000 gets me soooo incredibly excited! Gonna save a few more months for a nice down payment but man I can't wait to get my hands on one! Hopefully April timeframe I'll be able to :p
goota live on the track through you because im never trackin mine lol
Is track mode on the whole time ?
Michelin PS4 are consistently bad haha, I finished that sentence before you said it. Looking forward to your future BRZ videos.
What brake pads are you using?
How were oil temps out on track? In the texas heat my temps were stuck in the 250-265 range so I usually did cool down laps out of fear for my motor haha.
How do you accurately read the oil temp? OEM gauge is pretty vague. Looked like 250F
@@Zygrene Ah, My 2020 has 190 and 270 on the digital gauge. It sits pretty close to 270F when I have the attention span to look down. But I’m also tuned on Ecutek so I have my phone connected for all of the other readings like oil temp/AFR/Coolant temp.
i thought soombaroos can only crab walk on dirt paths how did he do that
He had eurobeat on, of course he's faster smh
Nice video, straight to the point love it 🔥
In track mode, can you vary the amount of traction control assist (low medium high), or does it turn it off completely?
Based on my understanding from watching different reviews. Traction control us given it's own independent button. So you can be in track mode while still having traction control on in some degree. It makes me wonder if you can do something wacky like turning traction off in snow mode😂😂
nothing like eurobeat while tracking 😎
How were the oil temperatures? Stock oil weight?
The stock gauge is pretty hard to decipher but it looked like it was hitting around 250F. Hotter than I expected for a cold day. OEM 0W20.
Should have bought the GR-86 to keep up. The real Drift King says that it's 2 seconds faster in the corners, lol.
Dude how did those mp4s tires look afterwards?
See my latest video. Not good lol
dang need to bring my ‘22 to a speedsf event these days
Thought everyone loved Michelin PS4s?
drifty drifty on the those stock tires. Press and hold Traction or single press?
Hold traction button to turn everything off. Track mode button turns off stability but leaves traction control on.
@@Zygrene cool. Did you ever drive a first gen on track? Pretty jelly of that motor. Makes more HP and tq on pump than my gen 1 on full bolt ONS and e85 😝
What TC mode were you in? Can you pedal dance it or is that unnecessary in the ‘22?
Everything off. No pedal dance - just hold the Traction Control button for around 3 seconds and both traction/stability will fully disable.
@@Zygrene Nice. Pedal dance in Gen 1 is a Pain.
How is the rev hang?
on the old car there were alot of nannies that stepped in if you were starting to lose it. Do you feel the same in this car?
Nope, just hold the traction button for 3 seconds and the rest is up to you
Will the chime re-enables after engine restarts..
The process didn't even work lol
You weren't doing the process correctly. You have a limited amount of time once the ignition turns on (so prep it first then press ignition).
Timing is key. Look for the seat belt warning light (cluster?). You don't need to insert the seatbelt all the way, just enough to shut off the seatbelt warning light and chime. For some reason I only have to click it once now. I do this everyday since I don't have a passenger seat lol.
Anything is easier at the limit than a stock S2000 😂
How is it compared to ND miata?
That's a question I'll answer in a future video!
How’s rear lift at high speeds vs s2000 ?
Just wondering, do you feel the BRZ is a better car than the S2K?
SavageGeese had an interesting take on this- S2K/BRZ/Miata for track, reverse that for road.
@@streamius thanks, will look it up
Stay tuned!
any ideas for what to do about the wind buffeting?
Dunno but I think the side mirrors may have something to do with it.
Gotta say, you seem at home in a japanese front engine rwd manual.
