Well, considering neither franchises implement much physics, I'd say that it would probably just act like a shockwave that harms everyone except the wielder.
You know, the ten hit thing is a balancing thing in the game, in the expanded universe the energy sword lasts until the weilder puts it away, otherwise the arbiter would be long dead by now, along with countless others
Something to take into account about the energy sword is that, despite its "ten hit limit" seen in-game, this is purely a game balancing mechanic and not reflective of how the energy sword is in the Halo mythos at large. Remember that the energy sword only loses ten percent of its charge on the killing blow. You can strike an enemy repeatedly with no loss of charge, and it's only the final strike which actually kills the opponent when the sword's battery depletes. And even then, there are exceptions. The energy sword expels not ten percent but rather two to three percent of its charge every time it lands a killing blow against a Flood, because the Flood are heavily decomposed and putrefied, so their bodies are much easier to cut through and therefore require less battery from the sword.
+Yayai Danish Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't certain lightsabers have modular frequency or something. As in they could control the sabers density to the point that it could phase through other sabers. So all you had to do was reduce it and after you got past the blades increase it again.
In halo if you don't hit the person properly they will still be alive since you only took out the shield and not to forget energy swords give the godly power of mid distance lunging 😂
Fun fact: The lightsaber has way more destructive power than its given credit for. The Death Star is pretty much just a lightsaber that ignites itself into a planet.
+DragoSonicMile Grab a stick with one hand. Swing it around. Do you hit your own arm? If no, congrats! You wouldn't cut your arm off with a lightsaber. If yes, you probably have some serious motor control issues or seizures and I apologize for bringing this up.
A stick has weight on all parts of it the light saber is all handle weight and a fast death part that if a single mistake is made lops off body parts. Would take lots of training to properly use stick swinging or no. Swing the stick often and statistically you will hit yourself and it only has to happen once.
Lightsaber gets stuck in the middle of the energy sword. Energy sword user: I've got you now! Lightsaber user turns off the Lightsaber, moves the handles and turns it back on. Energy sword user: *BRUH*
Ultimate Scotty yes but that would probably end in the death of both of them because by time the saber turned back on the energy sword user would have had enough time for them to bring to sword down slashing the opponent but the lightsaber would probably turn on leaving them both bleeding out
@@OnTheSamePage- Well if you can call that a saber since if you made another one of those it wont clash with each other it is more like a oversized plasma cutter so game theory was right
if youve watched the hacksmith vid they said it takes a nuclear power plant in a battery to make an actual lightsaber without a power pack connected to it.
Grievous I have questions for you & you’re gonna talk. What were you doing on Kashyyyk having at that Trandoshan Slavers Camp of who captured the Wookiee Chieftain Tarful when the Clone Commando’s of Delta Squad had a positive I.D. visual on you & your ship’s I.D. Soulless One? Also why were there Geonosians there as well? Also what happened to Delta Squad Member RC-1207 called Sev? It was shortly after you attacked them in a nearby Wookiee Hangar This Transmission came up after they used the 4 Quad Turbo Lasers to take out a Separatist ship over Kachiro the Capital City: Sev: "Boss, I've got a problem here!" Boss: "Sev, where are you?" Sev: "Sector…multiple hostiles…Sir!" Fixer: "Lost his signal, Boss!" Boss: "Well, find it again, damnit! Squad, regroup! We're going after Sev." Clone Advisor 1: "Negative negative, 38! New orders came through from the Jedi Generals! Clear the area! EVAC now!" Boss: “I don’t care if they came from Master Yoda himself!” Clone Advisor 1: “As a matter of fact, they DID, Soldier. Now get your squad out of there. Scorch: “Blast our orders! Forty?” Fixer: “He’s right, Boss. We gotta EVAC!” Scorch: “Sir, we have to go back!” It happened before the Republic Forces arrived on Kashyyyk. I will get 07’s info out of you & all of your allies.
Qui Gon Jinn I have learned more of how Anakin originated from for you he was created by Sith Alchemy of the Power Midi-Chorian Manipulation which was created by Sith Lord Darth Plagueis who taught it to his student Darth Sidious aka Sheev Palpatine that used Midi-Chorians to make Anakin which explains why his Mother somehow got pregnant & had no husband. Palpatine knew once The Chosen One was found his master would execute him & take Anakin in for training. Palpatine killed Plagueis in his sleep. Posing as a Naboo Senator he would await his chance to get elected as Chancellor of the Republic. He played both roles on both sides like a fiddle, once Anakin’s talent by taking out that Trade Federation Control Ship which had commanded the Droids Jar Jar & The Gungans were fighting. He set up the entire Clone Wars to test him while you’re Master Count Dooku served as Mauls replacement until he made Jedi Knight, you’re Master usefulness came to an end. When Anakin executed him. He wanted to learn the power of what created him to prevent Padmé Amidala’s death. When Anakin was defeated by Obi-Wan on Mustafar, Palpatine used the power to keep his new apprentice alive by taking Padmé’s life away from her until his new prosthetic mechanical limbs & Life Support Suit was Online. He lied about Anakin killing Padmé with his anger. With nothing left to bring him back to the Light Side, The Chosen One became Darth Vader & hunted all of Jedi but few survivors to extinction. The Light Side inside of him was reawakened by his Son’s plight he did fulfill the Prophecy at the cost of his own life. You were right about him. But now His Grandson Ben Solo now has become Kylo Ren & wants to continue become like him when he was Darth Vader how can he be redeemed to the Light Side?
You’re forgetting something, the wrist protection around the energy sword may work if it was blunt, however since the beam can cut through anything all the lightsaber would have to do is put a little weight on the end and physics would tell you that the wrist would be amputated.
The wrist protection is made of plasma, meaning that pressure you put there likely wouldn't do anything as its essentially the same as hitting the main blade, which hasn't been severed by plasma in star wars lore(that I know of). And, going by the video, they are made of the same stuff meaning it would likely just glance off. Not to mention that there are lightsabre wrist guards in the form of Kylo Ren's sword which do the exact same thing.
The advantage: Energy swords are a one hit ko And the last 10 swings is only in the game for balancing, In the expanded universe, the energy sword can last forever if u dont put it away
@@cursedice517 but if we say that both party’s could use all powers then the Jedi could just use the force to help them not get caught ( not that it matters I love both franchises {sequels not included} )
+Matthew Smith Yeah, the crystal is infused with the wielder's connection to the force. Explaining why those who embrace the dark side of the force have red lightsabers, and those who embrace the light side have Blue and Green, (Mace Windu's is a special one).
No....No, just stop...It's caused by crystals found on the planet Ilum. During the old republic the colours were used to discern a Jedi's position or occupation. Blue is the colour of the Jedi Guardian, Green the colour of a Jedi Consular and Yellow the colour of a Jedi Sentinel. Red crystals however are synthetically made.
+The Croaker It is a bit bizarre but you have to consider that this was built specifically for an alien species. It would more or less have the Elites physiology, combat skill and culture in mind. It may be weird to us but it is perfect for them.
Haha kudos. You upset one of the soy boy betas who think anybody takes the word "incel" seriously other than his virtue signaling friends and the online virgins trying to claim it to take the words power away. And THATS obliviously the reason he won't debate it, not that he had nothing other than "if I stand up for women, one might let me touch them".
Fun Fact:Knights of the Old Republic mention (and make you use) crystals to produce the color of the light saber. Without it, the beam cannot be produced.
+Tatari Lives The Old Republic was produced as a sort of sequel to KotOR by BioWare and you use crystals in it too. For both lightsabers and blasters as upgrades, but as far as I know, the story in the starting area of the Jedi Counsellar puts much emphasis on compiling the parts of your first lightsaber (including a focusing crystal) and assembling it.
It's not just the arbiter the plans sword doesn't really die with the exception of game balancing, but by that logic every Jedi would be able to rip a giant ship it of the sky so lightsabers are kinda pointless.
11:50 As seen in Halo 2 when you play as The Arbiter, the energy sword takes way less energy to use. So really you could swing 34 times as arbiter. This could mean that there is a proper trick/form for energy swords that takes less energy when you swing that a human wouldn't know. So I think there isn't really a defined limit because it depends on your skill.
The HALO games only have that ten hit limit so the Energy Sword doesn't become overpowered. In the canon, Elites/Sangheili were known to get into LONG fights with their swords. That is why Arbiter is canonically able to use his Prophet's Bane for so damn long.
@@Xx_Stogi_xX It was just to state facts. I know when it came out, but a lot of people constantly forget how overpowered the energy sword in HALO 2 was, as each hit only took 5% from the battery, and it one shot almost everything. And even more people forget HALO Legends and other canon stories.
True that dude, like I said before. If your just trying explain it in a better way on how over powered the energy sword really is. Then don’t mind me dude, you have all the right to do so...
I understand that you're trying to set something straight, but he said the HALO energy sword was better anyways, so there's no real need to point this out.
The fact that in the energy sword the hilt is perpendicular to the blade also makes it easier for the wielder to not be able to hold on if their attacker strikes the energy sword on the flat side
the energy sword's battery is a game play mechanic, its not cannon. the sword arbiter uses in halo 5 is over 3400 years old. he had it reforged, not because it didn't work after all that time, but because he wanted it to have parts from the sword he used to kill truth.
I always thought about how a light saber would probably only have weight in the handle, and this has solidified that for me, giving me the thought that it would also feel pretty realistic weight wise in VR.
"Energy constantly flows through the crystal. You're not fighting with a simple blade as much as you are directing a current of power. Your thoughts, your actions, they become energy." - Kanun Jarus. The lightsaber has weight, the energy that it is running through it exerts pressure, giving it the feeling of weight. Not to mention the wielders thoughts and emotions become some of that energy
Actually, the energy sword lasts much longer than you’d actually think. In the expanded lore it takes a lot of hits before it runs out of power, it gives more reason to come out on top.
Nowadays I still don't know which is the power source of the energy sword, the 100% bar shown in the HUD is only to balance the gameplay, it isn't canon
wouldnt say that because the lightsaber is alot more modular than whats shown in the movies. There's a light whip, a lightsaber blaster, a one handed double sided blade and even one that has multiple blades
Actually according to the extended lore and books, energy swords only have 10 swings ONLY IF IT MAKES CONTACT WITH ORGANIC MATTER. It's been said in the extended lore that a single energy sword was used to split a convanant space carrier just by cutting the supports in half
I'm sorry, but your claims about the energy sword's battery life are pretty off. You're going by the games, which always puts gameplay balance over canon (unless we really believe a Marine can take a dozen plasma bolts to the face no-problem). Considering all the research you put into the video on why a back-tap would kill a Spartan, I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Now, in your defense, the canon has never officially comment on the battery-life of a Sword. That said, there are sources that can give you an idea of how long an energy sword could last in battle. As examples: - In the Spartan Ops cutscenes from Halo 4, Spartan Paul DeMarco is seen cutting through several Sangheili with an energy sword we know has seen prior action. - In "The Duel" from Halo Legends, the Arbiter, Fal 'Chavamee, cuts down several Sangheili before his blades run out of power. - In "Halo: Hunters on the Dark", Spartan Frank Kodiak has an energy sword he's been carrying around since the Covenant War (the book is set a little over 2 years after the war ends). So, no matter how you slice it (sorry for the pun), the idea of "10 hits" just doesn't hold water.
+Josh Riggin. have you even played halo because the way i remember it (i played it last week) i killed 10-15 enemy's before my sord ran out of energy and the swords actually last longer in the hands of the covenant because there's a fail safe in the weapon ( which is stated in several of the halo books) and if given to a covenant enginer the enginer will fix they failsafe making it last way longer ( if you could not tell i am a halo nerd)
Some issues being design: if you really want to compare two items also consider the way they’re used. It’s comparing the armor on a horse to the armor on a human. Lightsabers are designed for and by force sensitives NOT for regulars. A more legitimate comparison ( in spite of the change of material) is a vibro-sword. Also known to be very destructive to flesh, but also much more commonly used by non force sensitives. If you really wanna get nit picky on the lightsaber though, some can extend and shorten blades, and sometimes are rapidly deactivated and reactivated to bypass an enemy weapon. I do think that in actual war the lightsaber has a huge advantage. But for pure dueling purposes, it just depends on a lot of other factors.
yep, no one talks about how you can just turn it off and back on again like some toy, and if we aren't talking about someone being trained in the weapon being the 1 to use it, then trapping another weapon is even more useless.
As much as I love the design of the energy sword I don't think the sword breaking design works against a circular blade because there's nothing for the sword breaker to catch onto
The one glaring omission that makes the results here incorrect is that all “trapping” style swords use the blade to funnel the opponent’s sword down to the trap position. The swords go from being wide open down to a choke point that is used to disarm the opponent. The Halo sword just has a narrow opening at top which turns it into blind luck that the opponent’s blade will slip between this opening
That doesn't make the results incorrect, It is surprisingly easy to anticipate and catch a narrow rod-like object in between openings that are similar to energy sword's. Also since elites are specifically trained to use the trapping technique along side others means the users are... well... used to it.
some energy swords have handguards that cover the entire hilt, and the older models round out at the bottom, almost coming together. The newer ones have a little bump which, while less effective, seem to serve the same purpose. And the Halo infinite one is the same as the older models. If anything is wrong about the video it's the fact that you would absolutely stab yourself with those wristguards, and that the energy sword has way more than 10 hits canonically.
@@stormshadow5382 Except we have never seen a trapping weapon with such a tiny gap. We have never seen elites catch with their swords except maybe other big energy swords, and even that is relatively rare. The fact of the matter is that such a small gap would mean a horrible trapping design.
The energy sword can last much longer in the halo lore but in game it is only ten swings so it’s balanced same with all the other plasma weapons in halo before a battle the user would just charge the the weapon for a minute or two and they could use for the entire day
Decent theory, but you really shouldn't have used fencing as your example. Something like WMA or HEMA would have been a better example for more accurate historical sword fighting, free from fencings rules and technicalities. I think a lightsaber would still win, as you have a much wider range of motion with it. The plasma sword requires awkward lunges and swings and must be sued one handed. Lightsabers can be used with two hands (greater control) and can attack easily from any angle. Plus, look at the design of historical swords. Swords with the sort of grip plasma swords have were not widely used (if at all) because of how awkward they would be to fight with.
+Pendragon Yeah I don't see why a near weightless weapon could be awkward really. It would be easy to maneuver because of how light it is. Pick like any object about the size of the hilt and then you got the weight of the sword. But with a lightsaber you would really just be able to slide down the side of the energy sword and chop their hand off, like the one hand cutting off move.
One thing that I just thought of that may just be b.s but is still interesting is that considering that a lightsaber is made of plasma its energy levels are to too high to have any significant weight(which you can see in the movement of the movies) and the energy sword is held together by a magnetic field, meaning it has a high sense of "gravity" (for lack of a better term) and would be exceedingly difficult to speedily use, so while weighted weapons are effective the almost weightless agility is a game changer. (I could go into better detail but I have covid rn so I don't care)
Alot of the lightsaber fighting techniques teach lightsaber users to counter other lightsaber users and I feel the moment someone lunges at a Jedi with the energy sword a Jedi would just chop your arms off
Yes,i thought the same, jedi trained for these stuff so long, doesnt matter of the energy blade design, the jedi could still do the dooku or anakin on them
Btw energy swords in the halo lore have much more battery than 10 hits, it was just a balancing choice in game because having too many hits would make op since it's a 1 hit kill
I'm not sure you peeps in the comments get it. The energy sword isn't designed for Humans, it is designed for Sangheili. That is Elites for you anti-haloists. The shape of the energy sword is designed for elites, the blades sticking out the back dont affect elites because they have two thumbs! So for you people saying the shape is flawed, its not, you aren't supposed to use it. The energy sword is meant for dueling, anything else such as assassinating and anything that is dishonorable. Get over yourselves for thinking it is just for short battles and not armies but who the hell brings a knife to a gunfight! In reality you would use a plasma rifle, sword for hand combat. Think its to slow or to big? Look up elite physical charts and anatomy. Elites are far superior to humans in every aspect except size. Look this stuff up before you criticise. Good video matpat, I enjoyed it.
"Does their anatomy make their forearms less subject to being destroyed by their own weapon? I don't play Halo so I honestly don't know, but having the blade extend to cover the forearm looks really dangerous, especially if it's made of plasma. But then elites may well be like Xenomorphs and just live on stars because why not. I don't know" Yes actually, they have a differently shaped hand that makes wielding the blade much less dangerous.
well tbh that knowledge wouldn't affect the point he was trying to make with the "battery life" because the cyber crystals are an energy source that responds to the force user who weilds it because lightsabers are unable to be used without the force. as for protosabers, I have no idea
first i did fencing for a while, so i understand how cool it is. also i feel like maybe the elites have some sort of like, charger gloves, as the only characters we play are master chief (Non-Elite) and the Arbiter (Lower-Tech Armor) Maybe this explains how the Elites have pretty much infinite swings.
I personally like starwars a lot, but I'm not going to get butthurt over this. Besides he didn't talk a whole lot about fighting styles, besides the whole dishanding thing
@@mustafaozturk2542 well, to create a red lightsaber you have to corrupt your kyber using emotions, so i think those things are more magical than scientific.
@@eduardomariano9896 Emotions are happens because your brain release some hormones to make you feel like that, if we look closer into those hormones we might even use those contents, we might change the gas properties as well. Mat, you forgot one VERY important detail. Length of the blade! The energy sword is meant to be a quick assassination blade, so its length is that of a long dagger or shortsword. The lightsaber, however, is designed for long reach, which is what you praised to be a good thing when you talked about fencing. In a real world battle, reach is everything. The user with the energy sword would only have the advantage if they attacked from the shadows. But if both users fought head on, the lightsaber wielder would have a HUGE advantage. The energy sword would be greatly hindered by its reach while the lightsaber user would feel safe making long jabs and strikes. Also, if the lightsaber did end up getting stuck in between the energy blades, the user could just turn the lightsaber off and then back on, another HUGE advantage of a lightsaber that you didn't mention. Lightsaber wins this with little to no contest unless the energy sword attacks first with an ambush.
+redhandsbluefaces I'm glad I didn't have to be the one who brought the turning on and off up. Not only that but he mentioned the Jedi fighting styles. One of which is a defensive style against other saber users. There also could be Sith styles as well but we won't get into those. And you can't look at weapons without someone to hold them, there wouldn't be a point otherwise. I'm not saying the lightsaber had to be wielded by a Jedi but without a wielder a weapon would just lie on the ground...Unless someone force pushed it.
+redhandsbluefaces Not to mention the grip! There's a reason that most swords are wielded like swords and not like fist extensions. Think about all the weapons that we hold perpendicular to our arm: swords, spears, guns, nunchucks, staffs, whips....
Braydon Ah, yes I just checked. And the length of a lightsaber is about 3 to 4 feet on average. But remember that the blade of a lightsaber can be adjusted at will. Darth Vader's blade, for example, was about 5 to 6 feet long. Lightsaber polearms can reach up to about 7 or 8 feet. A Jedi Wookie had a lightsaber that was like 10 feet long. The user can simply adjust the blade length to have the advantage, yet another feature of a lightsaber that MatPat didn't mention.
+redhandsbluefaces true but I think Matt was just comparing the basic forms of each sword. There are variations of the energy sword as well just like vader's saber. The prophets bane energy sword is longer than the type-1 energy sword. We just have to take each weapon as the most common variant or else we'll be here all day
First of all, huge fan of game theory and film theory! Tl;dr: 1) the style of the energy sword is optimized for attack and is practically useless at defense. 2) the mass distribution of the energy sword would make a cut's recovery time between strikes much longer than that of the lightsaber. 3)These two combined mean the lighsaberer can block once then strike before the energy sword can hope to block. 4) the sword catching on the energy sword is practically useless. Thus, the lightsaber is vastly superior. And now the long form: One other thing to consider when comparing these weapons is the grips. The energy sword's grip is similar to the grip inside a gauntlet sword which is great at getting powerful swings but horrible for blocking attacks. Since Halo doesn't really have you fighting sword to sword, this doesn't matter in Halo, but if you are fighting against another sword this is huge. The standard grip on the lightsaber allows blocks and attacks (although slightly weaker) so all you have to do is block the first swing and then repost (perhaps a villain's blow for you long sword fans) and BAM, you've beaten the energy sword. Especially since the lightsaber is far, far more maneuverable due to the position of its center of mass so the energy sword would take longer to bring into a blocking position than the lightsaber would to strike. This is why gauntlet swords were usually used with a buckler or other small shield. You strike hard with the sword while using the shield to block any incoming blows. Also, the blade catching ability of the energy sword is very limited. The alignment would have to be near perfect to catch the lightsaber. This is why parrying daggers and the trident spring opened dagger have such a wide span allowing you to catch the blade and funnel it into where you want it to disarm the enemy. The energy sword's catcher is almost completely negligible. Lastly, sorry fo this being such a long post and posting all this 4 years after the video came out but as someone who's been sword fighting with all manners of swords and bladed things, I wanted to bring this up. (If you want to know more about gauntlet swords, I would recommend the channel Shadiversity)
@@wowzerspotato5104 that too. Although depending on the time it takes, the energy sword user might be able to strike or thrust before you get your lightsaber to usable length again.
The fact that it has such a wide split for capturing(please don’t take that out of context) doesn’t really change a whole lot. For it is such a prominent feature that it could prove disadvantageous for the wielder. For the opponent could easily switch to tactics better suited against such a weapon
So, you'll mention how the lightsaber has so many more options for fighting styles than the energy sword, but then completely ignore your own rules and focus on the fact that the Jedi seem to favour hand amputation. If the lightsaber has more options, why focus on the one that isn't going to work in that situation?
+CrashSable Of course, that's ignoring the fact that the lightsaber would kill an untrained user whereas the energy sword could be used to turn your punch into a death-stab easily. Meaning if we are ignoring the traditional users, the energy sword is the vastly superior weapon.
+CrashSable That's true, but what's also true (since it seems he's following the game rule for calculating how long a sword lasts) is that the energy sword only loses power when it hits someone. It doesn't lose any power when clashing with other swords. I guess in the Halo universe this is due to it using power when slicing through the thick armor and energy shield it hits, while when hitting equal amounts of plasma it just stalemates and uses little to no energy.
I'm not sure the speed advantage of the light saber would be that significant. Plasma doesn't exactly weigh a ton. The energy sword hilt is slightly larger, but even a small difference in strength makes up for that.
He completely forgot about a lot of things about each weapon He gave design to the energy sword while forgetting other hilts and even forgetting you can turn a light sabour off to reset your placement
Just a little bit about sword design: medieval sword, you showed as an example, had 3 points/blades angled towards each other, and halo fork has only two parallel ones - this has vanishing chance to catch opponents weapon between blades.
Wouldn't the lightsabres still go through each other? Assuming they have the same density and the same size, whoever made the lightsabres we see likely optimized them to use the least energy while still operating meaning that they probably have just strong enough of a magnetic field to hold in the plasma and because they have the same density, any force exerted on them would act as it would in a normal atmosphere. Not to mention that after a few battles, the gases in the fields would start mixing and create a different colour (brown maybe?) so a more mixed lightsabre would be a sign of experience.
But apparently the plasma can hold the plasma so maybe, and also it is a weapon and it is created to fight other light saber and plasma rounds(sorry if bad English non native man here)
I'm theorizing that each showed/saber has its own (magnetic?) energy field with the same charge on the outside of the weapon. Since similar charges repel each other this is what creates the resistance when they touch and explains why they don't easily pass through each other.
those two pointy things near the hilt would stab your wrists and that gap just encourages the blade to cut your hands with nothing protecting your hands.
Something doesn't seem right about this theory. MatPat says that the Energy Sword's design is meant to trap other weapons which is superior, but then argues that in fences matches (which by the way are awesome, I watch them too) are about poking each other at a distance. Well, there are 2 problems with that. First, the fences matches are about poking each other at a distance because fencing swords are slim and flexible, unlike Lightsabers and Energy Swords who are more similar to a Swordbreaker 9:20. Second, even if the fencing style would be true for Lightsabers vs Energy Swords, the Energy Swords' superior design would be useless beacuse that gap is meant to trap swords attacking from a 45^ angle, you cannot trap a poking sword with that design, the only real design advantage in a Lightsabers vs Energy Swords fencing fight would be who has the longer sword. That being said even without the fencing style an average battle would have less than 10 swings, the Energy Swords would still have a superior design that is now useful as the Lightsaber would be pretty much limited to attacking from the sides but on the other side a Lightsaber would has more flexibility and possibilites of tactics of use due to its simple design, but the Energy Sword would still have the edge simply because it's hard to attack someone from the sides because if you do it frontally he can trap your sword while he is free to attack you frontally (unless the Lightsaber can pass through that gap, in that case the Energy Sword is screwed, GODDAMIT MATPAT, DO MEASUREMENTS!).
You also neglected to mention the energy swords fatal design flaw. As you said, its blades stretch past the wrist. Meaning if you dont want to impale your arm on the pointy end at your hands, you have to keep your wrist pretty much straight all the time, since twisting it would cause a bit of self injury. This in turn severely limits the control you have over your own weapon, and you are left with pretty clumzy swings and thrusts. So basically the hand protection screwes you over. On the other side, light sabers usually dont have any hand protection at all. Which also leads to all those hands flying off of peoples arms all the time.
Kelly #11 That severely limits your movement and blade control. Something really important in sword fights. Not to mention can your wrist withstand blocking a full force strike from an opponent without moving. As cool as it looks, its really impractical.
Yes but the Energy Sword is not ment to function directly like a sword, mobility isn't as important because it is ment for disarming an opponent rather than slashing at an opponent
Kelly #11 Thats just it. Swords like this work by having the user catch the opponents sword and then twist to lock it. Meaning you need a full range of your wrist movement to catch and lock the opponents sword. All the time having spikes close to your body. There is a reason why historical swords never had spikes near the hilt.
That is a good point though, but it most incarnations the sword never usually extends very far from the blade, barely covering the the hand, so I cN understand what you mean
When someone said the purple color represented the perfect balance between Jedi and Sith, then another said perfectly balanced as all things should be, I immediately thought one thing: Thanosaber.
I would still much rather have a lightsaber. Coming from a martial arts stand point, the Lightsaber gives me more flexibility in my wrists and motions.
The thing with the lightsaber being made out of plasma is totally clear in the 7th film when Kylo Ren and Rey collide with their swords holding them against each other because you see Kylo's sword flashing around the edge like lightning so it's clear that the swords are made out of plasma. Plus don't forget the sound they make when lit up.
ultimate tm well, as this was originally a mistake and George Lucas said they left it in because the fans liked it i'd say the sound isn't that important
ultimate tm the swords are made of the crystal in the middle of the handle there is no plasma involved in this same for the color the color of the light saber comes from the crystal...
The kyber crystal (source of lightsaber blade and colour) in kylos lightsaber is cracked, thus giving it the strange, almost fiery appearance. its not plasma.
in a lightsaber you can have 2 focusing cyber crystals and extend the blade's length. If your lightsaber gets stuck (Pause) in an energy sword pointed towards the user you can extend it

@@mahadahmed2311 alos the fact that a sword clash in the game doesn't lose you power anyway, you only lose power on a killing blow
But its not a video on lore its a video on who is more powerful IN THE GAME.
And the movies
Something to take into account about the energy sword is that, despite its "ten hit limit" seen in-game, this is purely a game balancing mechanic and not reflective of how the energy sword is in the Halo mythos at large. Remember that the energy sword only loses ten percent of its charge on the killing blow. You can strike an enemy repeatedly with no loss of charge, and it's only the final strike which actually kills the opponent when the sword's battery depletes. And even then, there are exceptions. The energy sword expels not ten percent but rather two to three percent of its charge every time it lands a killing blow against a Flood, because the Flood are heavily decomposed and putrefied, so their bodies are much easier to cut through and therefore require less battery from the sword.
and a jedi would be much easier to cut through than an armoured elite or spartan so realistically the sword would only deplete like 5 percent
The Energy Sword may only have 10 swings, but those swings are only spent when they make contact.

The fact that in the energy sword the hilt is perpendicular to the blade also makes it easier for the wielder to not be able to hold on if their attacker strikes the energy sword on the flat side
The colors of the lightsabers come from the kyber crystal.

In expanded lore its said it takes 10 years before it needs to recharge
wouldnt say that because the lightsaber is alot more modular than whats shown in the movies. There's a light whip, a lightsaber blaster, a one handed double sided blade and even one that has multiple blades
No that 10 swing thing is just for gameplay
Doesn't matter cause it wins anyway
I just used the bandanna skull to have infinite
Actually according to the extended lore and books, energy swords only have 10 swings ONLY IF IT MAKES CONTACT WITH ORGANIC MATTER. It's been said in the extended lore that a single energy sword was used to split a convanant space carrier just by cutting the supports in half
But lightsabers still last longer even in gameplay as well

+Cole Meyer Well, halo's energy sword looks a lot like a Katar, which was a pretty common weapon in the east.
+The Game Theorísts Shut up fake game theory
I'm sorry, but your claims about the energy sword's battery life are pretty off. You're going by the games, which always puts gameplay balance over canon (unless we really believe a Marine can take a dozen plasma bolts to the face no-problem). Considering all the research you put into the video on why a back-tap would kill a Spartan, I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Now, in your defense, the canon has never officially comment on the battery-life of a Sword. That said, there are sources that can give you an idea of how long an energy sword could last in battle. As examples:
- In the Spartan Ops cutscenes from Halo 4, Spartan Paul DeMarco is seen cutting through several Sangheili with an energy sword we know has seen prior action.

And even if the lightsaber DID somehow get in there in the first place, what's stopping them from... Turning it off?
@@stormshadow5382 Except we have never seen a trapping weapon with such a tiny gap. We have never seen elites catch with their swords except maybe other big energy swords, and even that is relatively rare.
The fact of the matter is that such a small gap would mean a horrible trapping design.

The energy sword can last much longer in the halo lore but in game it is only ten swings so it’s balanced same with all the other plasma weapons in halo before a battle the user would just charge the the weapon for a minute or two and they could use for the entire day
Thank you I don't know how he didn't know that
Decent theory, but you really shouldn't have used fencing as your example.
Remember, both weapons have no weight in the blades.
TheDiamondSprtn Fair point
+Pendragon Yeah I don't see why a near weightless weapon could be awkward really. It would be easy to maneuver because of how light it is. Pick like any object about the size of the hilt and then you got the weight of the sword. But with a lightsaber you would really just be able to slide down the side of the energy sword and chop their hand off, like the one hand cutting off move.
+Pendragon Naw I'd use eskrima with a lightsaber since it's basically a stick that can cut in any direction.
+Salamence Robot2000 It does but plasma is lighter than air.

(I could go into better detail but I have covid rn so I don't care)

well tbh that knowledge wouldn't affect the point he was trying to make with the "battery life" because the cyber crystals are an energy source that responds to the force user who weilds it because lightsabers are unable to be used without the force. as for protosabers, I have no idea

Hold on, those crystals still might have the same gas properties. So he is not wrong about it.
My guess is that they're used to focus or otherwise empower a laser that is used to excite the gas into an ionized plasma.
After all, everything happens at the atomic level. We can't change the kybers with emotions but instead their substances in a lab.
Him talking about gases producing the colors in a lightsaber
Kybercrystals:Am I a joke to you?
+redhandsbluefaces The energy sword is 4.32 ft
We just have to take each weapon as the most common variant or else we'll be here all day
Finally, a crossover of film and game theory
Film Theory>Game Theory
First of all, huge fan of game theory and film theory!
Tl;dr:
1) the style of the energy sword is optimized for attack and is practically useless at defense.
And now the long form:
One other thing to consider when comparing these weapons is the grips.
Also with the fact that even if the lightsaber was caught the user could just deactivate it then activate it again
@@wowzerspotato5104 that too. Although depending on the time it takes, the energy sword user might be able to strike or thrust before you get your lightsaber to usable length again.
Thank you for this. I was gonna write my own comment saying exactly this. You're wonderful
Can you not write a paragraph
How many hours did you need to write that
The fact that it has such a wide split for capturing(please don’t take that out of context) doesn’t really change a whole lot. For it is such a prominent feature that it could prove disadvantageous for the wielder. For the opponent could easily switch to tactics better suited against such a weapon
Good Ol' "Ross O' Dunnel" and his ideas.
+Kjernekar I think in the halo universe it'd last way longer, like many things in the game there are a lot of limiters to make it playable
because in a real sword fight you don't go swinging or you'll loose
They also cut off arms too
I think you missed something huge, the halo energy sword does not lose any charge until it actually strikes something dead.
*alive
+Daniel Knapp but no it only takes like 2 hits and the user of the lightsaber would be at a major speed advantage
I thought that too.
I'm not sure the speed advantage of the light saber would be that significant. Plasma doesn't exactly weigh a ton. The energy sword hilt is slightly larger, but even a small difference in strength makes up for that.
Ty The Guy the user has more ways to swing it
He completely forgot about a lot of things about each weapon
He gave design to the energy sword while forgetting other hilts and even forgetting you can turn a light sabour off to reset your placement

Yeah
But apparently the plasma can hold the plasma so maybe, and also it is a weapon and it is created to fight other light saber and plasma rounds(sorry if bad English non native man here)
I'm theorizing that each showed/saber has its own (magnetic?) energy field with the same charge on the outside of the weapon. Since similar charges repel each other this is what creates the resistance when they touch and explains why they don't easily pass through each other.
those two pointy things near the hilt would stab your wrists and that gap just encourages the blade to cut your hands with nothing protecting your hands.
Episode courtesy of Ross O'Donovan.

You literally just Mix matched his words and waisted 20 minutes writing a 3 paragraph comment for nothing.
hey you play clash of julians?
Urin- never mind
You also neglected to mention the energy swords fatal design flaw. As you said, its blades stretch past the wrist. Meaning if you dont want to impale your arm on the pointy end at your hands, you have to keep your wrist pretty much straight all the time, since twisting it would cause a bit of self injury. This in turn severely limits the control you have over your own weapon, and you are left with pretty clumzy swings and thrusts. So basically the hand protection screwes you over.
On the other side, light sabers usually dont have any hand protection at all. Which also leads to all those hands flying off of peoples arms all the time.
Then don't move your wrist a lot, if you have any form you should be fine
Kelly #11
That severely limits your movement and blade control.
Kelly #11
Thats just it.

I would still much rather have a lightsaber. Coming from a martial arts stand point, the Lightsaber gives me more flexibility in my wrists and motions.
+Oscar Floyd yes very true
Would have to agree with the martial arts while try to use that and the sword would be easier with the lightsaber
+Oscar Floyd Indeed. Holding the energy sword and moving your wrist more than about 15-20 degrees, you'd cut your own hand off.
i think the design blocks other energy sword slices, because if you hit and someone else hits at the same time you take little damage in game.

Cactus of Doom (the more you know)
ultimate tm the swords are made of the crystal in the middle of the handle there is no plasma involved in this same for the color the color of the light saber comes from the crystal...
The kyber crystal (source of lightsaber blade and colour) in kylos lightsaber is cracked, thus giving it the strange, almost fiery appearance.
its not plasma.
In Starwars the sword might not be made from plasma but in a real life situation it would.
With siblings it's more like "who wins in a fight" rather than "who would win in a fight"
in a lightsaber you can have 2 focusing cyber crystals and extend the blade's length.
If your lightsaber gets stuck (Pause) in an energy sword pointed towards the user you can extend it
