I wanted to point out the same thing, you are slowing down singular objects or enemys with the force slow ability. So it can't be a force fast effect. Adding to that you (matt) just said in the beginning that the midi-chlorians are not the force itself but just the thing that connects us to the force. So I would not base the force powers on the midi-chlorians. I love your overall thought but I just cannot believe this theory.
You're mistaken. What it does you are just processing information faster. So you react and think faster. Than a normal person. Think it like watching a video in 2x, that explains why the other is not slowed. Because your only focusing to that specific object or person.
11:48 It makes you faster instead of the object slower! *shows footage where only one object slows down and the second moving object procedes to move at the same speed* huh.
When Kenobi says the the the the force penetrates us and binds the universe together, you can infer that the force is most likely able to manipulate the physics of the star wars universe, like in the case of force slow, the force could potentially slow down certain objects while not slowing others. If you think about it as a universe where our concept of physics doesn’t apply it makes sense. The force could be a part of the fundamental forces along with electromagnetism and gravity that can manipulate the state of anything at the atomic level. The only part of this explanation that doesn’t make sense is that a fundamental force of the universe is being manipulated by people, but this is solved by viewing the star wars universe as one that functions differently than our own. You can also think about it like how Every partial can exert its gravitational pull one other particles, maybe midi-clorians set themselves apart from mitochondria because they and access or are partially made up of that universe’s Higgs boson/field and the mind can tap into that power because force push, pull, and jump all seem like you can accomplish them by using gravitational forces I’m looking at this now and I think I wasted 10 minutes typing this on my phone for nobody to see
It never really seemed like a "slowing" effect to me, instead appearing more like the ability "holds things in place." This change in understanding puts it right in line with Push and Pull, as maybe just a more advanced version of those basic skills.
Except that things keep moving while they are slowed. One could argue that you are right in a way, in that the force applies increased pressure on an object from all sides. However, that wouldn't hold up either because any initial momentum would be lost. Objects slowed (like blasters) wouldn't return to their normal speed because nothing is constantly giving them momentum.
I think it is more of this sort of thing too. If it was you just reacting faster then it would affect everything around you not just a single troop or object. To me this technique is very similar in appearance and function to Kylo's force freeze from episode 7. It feels like this skill works in the same way that you can use the force to speed yourself up but in the opposite effect. Like you can increase your speed so much that you appear to be a blur, so it stands to reason that you could also accomplish the opposite and slow someone or thing to a crawl.
@@Lord_Poyo Unless you take in the fact that the force can give the middle finger to physics. If The Force wants to decrease the rate at which an object travels while preserving it's inertia, it can. because it's not real, it's a made up power. Oh, and another possible theory: what if Force Slow isnt really slowing the object, but taking a few moments of the objects action and extending them? For example, if it took 1 second for me to take one step, and someone used force slow on me, now it takes me 5 seconds. meaning Force Slow took a 1 second span and stretched it over 5. this could also help to explain why objects keep momentum, because they aren't being held back, and no force is being pushed onto them, The Force is just bending time around them to make a short amount of time last longer.
One question though, why is that not everyone slows down? Also Kylo Ren has this ability kinda, so maybe it's more that you're making other people and objects have less force energy around them. Or maybe it's a matter of changing space time using the energy of the force.
Disproved the “force fast” argument: Only problem is that if he was making himself faster, everything would be slowed down at once. However, he can only slow one object or person at a time. (Until later when you can slow groups of enemies) but still, if you slow down a group of scout troopers, the rocket trooper sniping you from far away with rockets won’t be slowed down at all. This can also be shown even more when you slow down a fan, it’s one at a time and the other ones around keep the same speed. So yeah... really needed to check how the game actually works, because the gameplay completely wrecks the theory.
Up until he talks about how the player //speeds up// I thought he was going to say that the jedi's connection to the force means they can access and manipulate the force in other beings (manipulating the force through the midochlorians in other objects), which would also explain how the plague force power enables some jedi's to poison people without contact. Doesn't really explain how it works on non-living objects but maybe they're all just covered in a lot of space germs :d
The only thing MatPat understands worse than Star Wars is... Um... Yeah no, he's completely Star Wars illiterate. At least this is better than his Solo video though. Good grief.
The way I’ve thought about this ability since we say Kilo Ren use this ability on a blaster bolt in episode 7, is that the force user just uses a combination of force pull and push to hold and object or person in place
@@joneskleid9501 but as we see from the training visions, he was able to do it before. He might was just too traumatized to use push and pull because those were the abilities his master used before his death, while force slow is only based on push and pull, but not connected to his trauma
William Horrigan that’s the same way I thought it was, and it makes sense in the context to how it’s used in the game, because you can only use it on one object
That’s a great theory with some cool science buuuut u might wanna add this one to the wrong pile. When Kal uses a basic force slow on one stormtrooper, it only slows that stormtrooper while the others around him remain at a normal speed. If Kal was using a “force fast” then everything would appear slow apart from him, but this is not the case. But hey, that’s just an unfortunate dismissal of your theory, your game theory! Soz Matpat, love the videos man, would love to see some more Star Wars ones in the lead up to the rise of Skywalker. 👍
@@King_Purplish I wouldn't call that force slow considering that he holds it in place, likely meaning that the "force slow" in Fallen Order is simply just the speed of a projectile or machine being slowed down in a similar manner to "force hold".
@@King_Purplish And the guy behind it, Poe Dameron. Same thing happens in Jedi: Fallen Order. If we are going the biological route with this, that would mean that when a jedi is slowing down matter of any kind, they'd be affecting the microscopic life-forms on the object and in the atmosphere and making _them_ slow down, as well as whatever they're near or attached to. Force speed is already a thing, obi-wan and qui-gon do it in The Phantom Menace, however, you missed a detail, the whole world doesn't slow down, for example with the pistons, only specific objects do. To do this with speed a Jedi would have to speed up everything in the universe except for that select object
This is not at all how force speed works. Force speed is an augment that you place upon yourself, I assume through high amounts of inner focus. Making it impossible to use on someone else or other objects. It helps with concentration, reactions, focus, split decision making etc. Something that only exists in the eyes of the person who is under it's influence is very difficult to show on camera or to a player in a game. But anyone who has an extremely fast thinking process, and reactions would most likely perceive the world around them as going slower. Every bit of information picked up by their senses would be perceived as if it was a slower environment, there's no way only singular elements of that environment would be seen as faster or slower, it would be everything.
@@RemembermeSF Yeah but he shows a scene where the use of forceslow and only one spinning thing gets slower when there are two in the screen, aldo the thrown light saber in the other scene. So that excuse does not work.
True, I think this is also why Jedi Knight Jedi Academy had force speed instead of force slow. Which in single player made the entire world slow around you.
Others mentioned this, apparently in fallen order it’s exclusive to chosen objects/people. Originally i wanted to fully accept this as it matches up with the force speed ability in jedi outcast which slows down everything in singleplayer. However with this information it suggests it more follows a weaker version of something like force stasis which seems to work on living and non living beings (at least according to SWTOR, not that that’s universally reliable) regardless it fits more into just a sort of another form energy or telekinetic use of the force.
interesting, I forgot about force stasis. But in KOTOR the single player version of SWTOR and precursor. Force stasis could only be used on living things, even if you leveled it up all the way. My first thought also was some form of force speed but giving it a closer look what we see in the game doesn't match up with what we know about force speed. Is it possible that star wars has upgraded the force stasis ability or maybe even the force slow ability?
"The force cant effect nonliving things!" 1:Luke's X-wing 2: droids in general all throughout the clone wars. 3:rocks on dagobah. Among other things...
While technically true, the Crystal's inside of lightsabers have long been said to be living items. The episode in 2004 clone wars where baris coffee was constructing her lightsaber Luminara Unduli mentions several times in her chant that the crystal is alive and chose her, that the connection between jedi and crystal brought out the best in both. Same goes for star wars the clone wars 2012. Yoda takes younglings into illumination for their crystal trial. Tells them that the crystal will choose them, not the other way around. Only through channeling the force can you hear it call
Let's not forget Kylo froze a blaster bolt mid air and force froze Rey. So force slow is probably actually slowing the intended target and not just speeding up the jedi
It seemed that he was more holding it still with the force rather than slowing it down. If you watch the clip, the bolt is clearly resisting the force.
So theoretically, could a “normal” Star Wars universe civilian train their own mind and body to increase mitichlorians and potentially tap into the force? In a sense could anakin or Vader have been defeated by someone who just “trained harder”?
I think the training would be multiplicative, so a civilian could train very hard to use simple force abilities and Anakin could feel things when he was a little kid.
@@mundusvis1224 No, you cant increase them, that is impossible unless you are darth plaguius, the only one who could do that and who is dead, to even do force powers you need over 5 thousand midichlorians to even do simple stuff, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO INCREASE IF YOU ARE A NORMAL PERSON YOU STUPID MAN
I suppose a random person could somewhat increase their midichlorian count but not enough to actually become a Jedi and be able to use the Force. Just like Filoni said, "If I train hard enough I'll be better at martial arts but I'll never reach Bruce Lee's level". I'm guessing becoming better at martial arts means increasing the midichlorian count and reaching Bruce Lee's level means using the Force/becoming a Jedi. 2000 to 20,000 midichlorians is quite the jump for a "normal" person to make by simply training. You have to be born with an already high midichlorian count otherwise I don't see why the Jedi would take Force-sensitive kids from their families to train them if they could just train random orphans.
This is a good point and basically invalidates the entire theory. I believe that force slow acts as a force pull in the opposite direction of movement, causing slower movements, it explains the inanimate objects too as you can force pull your lightsaber too you
Chuck it up to game design or the fact that you use a more complex force push/pull to force the thing you focus on to slow down. Choose your poison. After all, if you, as a jedi are creative enough, you can make an explosion using a pebble and a gun on our tech via some metal walls.
@@crashkojote5627Kojote there is also a force power called force speed that speeds up the user. and it is far more common in Starwars properties than force slow is. no this is doing something else.
Personally I think that it’s just an advanced form of the forces telekinetic abilities, but a combination of this and the telekinesis thing could explain a lot of Jedi abilities including their fighting abilities
I mean, just as he was explaining how it doesn't slow things down, it speeds you up, he shows footage of the Jedi slowing down individual things one at a time. If you were just speeding yourself up, everything around you would slow down at the same rate, soooooo that's probably not a thing
ManMayhem how could speed be relative to only one storm trooper in a group of three? Are you suggesting he’s also speeding up the other two storm troopers? Not to mention force speed is already a canon power. MatPat got it wrong.
If both the abilities were the same they would probably be a way to displace an object's atom. But there are notable differences between the 2. Cal's Slow fazes objects while Kylo's Freeze does not. So they are probably using different force powers.
That was my first thought, but there is a justification if we're digging for one. Basically, the perspective displayed to the *player* is just an abstraction of the *character's* perception. It's easy to think that the character could be so intensely focused on one singular thing that it "slows down", but not paying enough attention to other things to perceive them better. Think about looking at spinning fan blades. If they're a bit slow, and you aren't paying attention, they seem fast. Once you start following an individual blade you can make sense of it, but everything else besides the fan gets harder to track because you're so intensely focused. Probably just digging for justifications, but there's some sense to it at least.
I'd say jedi academy has force slow to some degree. It has a speed option which makes you go faster, which could essentially be thought of as the same thing as everything else going slower. From your perspective there is a difference but I would ultimately say it's the same power.
When you say that he is able to move faster than everything around him, then why is he only able to slow something or someone one force slow at a time instead of everything slowing with one “slow move.” For example the gears in that clip. He is only able to be faster than that one gear instead of the other one aswell.
Aidan Reyes it doesn't. If I had to guess, I'd say it works by stealing a portion of the kinetic energy an object has for the amount of time it is active. The energy is returned when the slow ends. In game, if you slow something and apply a force to it in a separate direction, it moves in the direction it is pushed while only carrying the momentum of the slow speed in the direction it was originally going.
Gameplay purposes or not, the fact that it is targeted dismisses any inferences based on it just speeding yourself up and because it has always functioned that way, it is 100% canonical.
This seems to be an issue with mat and austin, they have a really interesting idea, but they miss on one thing that proves them totally wrong. Still love the videos anyway
Your theory has one big hole: in pretty much every movie there is someone lifts up and throws big chunks of inanimate objects at each other, like all the time. Also, why is everyone else moving at regular speed when you only target one enemy at the time? How is Cal able to force pull and push inanimate objects in the game too? Much of the different puzzles are based on moving things around with the force. Edit: He -> Cal
This and I take offense that MatPat said Force Slow isn't in Jedi Academy, then goes on to explain how Force Slow really is Force Speed. Force Speed is not only one of the first Force Powers you learn in Jedi Academy but it's also used for exactly the type of slowdown-/speediness-requiring puzzles you see in Fallen Order and even moreso, the Force Speed in Jedi Academy slows down everything and everyone consistently, which translates exactly into the conclusion of this video - but without the holes in the theory.
That makes 0 sense First: They can't just be "really fast" as while everything Cal uses the ability on stops motion, everything else is normal. you can't just be super fast to a certain object/enemy. Seccond: There is already an ability that lets you be faster using the force called "force speed" Third: Yoda dies at 900 because of his species, not the force
My theory for this is kind of like how there's a light side equivalent to Force lightning, Force slow for the dark side slows down the mind of an opponent but Force slow for the light makes you fast like we see Obi-Wan and Qui Gon Jinn do in The Phantom Menace
One problem I have with this deduction, how do we explain that only some objects slow down when others don't in Cal's surroundings? If he was truly moving faster than ALL things around him should slow down, not one specific blaster bolt, stormtrooper, or machine.
I'm not sure why none of the comments I saw are making the link to Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens. Cal's force slow is clearly the same as what Kylo used to freeze the blaster projectile in that movie.
The ability Cal uses is Force Stasis, not Force Slow! Its also just a form of Force based telekinesis used to retrain or immobilize living things and/or objects! Also unlike Force Slow, Force Stasis is apparently a neutral force ability as it is used by Jedi & Sith alike, as Yoda uses it against Ventress in THE CLONE WARs, thus Cal's usage is perfectly acceptable! Kylo uses to immobilize blaster bolts in The Force Awakens!
Game still has to be balanced for player interaction. The point is that the science itself checks out even if the game won't allow it to actually work like that.
Yeah, and in the example he made of the mining pistons moving in and out of the mountainside that you have to slow so you can jump across them, you can slow 1 at a time, and the others still move normally... or the spinning platforms shown, same thing. If you were just amping up Cal's awareness and perception of time, all of them would slower at the same time, plus all the enemies, all the lasers, everything except Cal.
I'd like to see a minor re-do of the theory now that the entire game is out, seeing how right at the end of Order 66 with Cal and his master, Cal slows the clones and their blaster bolts down enough for the doors of the escape pod to close, not actually speeding himself up at all, just holding the clones and blaster fire in place long enough for them to close the doors.

Remember when Yoda said that the Force exists literally everywhere and surrounds everyone and everything, including to go as far as to literally mention rocks? Then proceeds to show Luke using the Force to lift rocks, R2-D2, etc? The very concept of lightsaber throw has nothing to do with life. Luke pulls his lightsaber to him in a cave on Hoth. Darth Maul opens a door to the reactor room in a Theed Hangar on Naboo by using the Force to throw something at it. Darth Vader repeatedly uses the Force to throw objects at Luke to taunt him on Cloud City... yeah, that idea just doesn't hold up in a Star Wars Court of Law. There is another term for a Jedi before they initially begin their training, something that establishes them as being eligible students for tutelage in becoming a Jedi. That term is "Force Sensitive," that meaning that you are able to biologically perceive the energy around you and manipulate it to some degree, albeit your usage of it can have varying outcomes when you have had no training with it. This is what we should be looking at when determining what a Force Power does. The reason it's seen as a dark side ability in KOTOR is because it IS being used on a person to cognitively alter them, but what we are seeing in Fallen Order is a different variant of it, not too uncharacteristic of the Force Speed used in the Jedi Knight games.
so if altering someone is the definition of a dark side power as in taking over their will or body and mind then so would the classic jedi mind trick. because you are cognitively altering their thoughts.Yet that is still a jedi power. So there has to be more to it than that.
I think in most games, mind trick is considered neutral? I never agree with the alignment system though. Force Stasis is seen as light side even though the idea is that you're freezing your enemy in place so you can cut them down without them being able to defend yourself.
Yeah, I agree. If I slow one stormtrooper, every other trooper is moving at normal speed. The theory of speeding up your own perceptions when you use Force Slow doesn't have a lot of evidence behind it. I like the theory, but it's instantly disproved by playing the actual game.
When he first focused on Force Slow in this video I was like "please, please don't try to say it's actually force speed, cause it's so clearly not in this game" then he proceeds to do it and I'm like "wtf dude, you're literally showing footage of 1 thing being slowed while the rest of the world is at regular speed." There's no way he overlooked this, or at least I want to believe he didn't. This feels very much like he just really wanted to push this idea and hoped no one noticed the blatant flaw in it.
Exactly. It makes way more sense than effecting time or whatever,

One question though, why is that not everyone slows down? Also Kylo Ren has this ability kinda, so maybe it's more that you're making other people and objects have less force energy around them. Or maybe it's a matter of changing space time using the energy of the force.
@@tillerrrmmonopoly5741 Or maybe its sans controlling not space time but time and space. hmmmmmm
Disproved the “force fast” argument:
Only problem is that if he was making himself faster, everything would be slowed down at once.
It's just a theory, A game theory. 😆
As much as I loved the vid, I honestly didn't believe the supercharging part right from the get go
Up until he talks about how the player //speeds up// I thought he was going to say that the jedi's connection to the force means they can access and manipulate the force in other beings (manipulating the force through the midochlorians in other objects), which would also explain how the plague force power enables some jedi's to poison people without contact. Doesn't really explain how it works on non-living objects but maybe they're all just covered in a lot of space germs :d

Steffen Day LOL! Very good point haha
The way I’ve thought about this ability since we say Kilo Ren use this ability on a blaster bolt in episode 7, is that the force user just uses a combination of force pull and push to hold and object or person in place
Makes more sense than this bloody theory
William Horrigan there is one problem with that at least in the context of this game. You don’t get push or pull till later
@@joneskleid9501 but as we see from the training visions, he was able to do it before. He might was just too traumatized to use push and pull because those were the abilities his master used before his death, while force slow is only based on push and pull, but not connected to his trauma

That’s a great theory with some cool science buuuut u might wanna add this one to the wrong pile.
There is one gap in the theory: You can only slow 1 person/ object at a time while the rest is still the same speed.
Yeah and gravity is the same for you which wouldn't make sense if you were overdrived

You mean force hold? One of the most bog-standard skills?
yeah that's just exerting pressure all around an object so that it can't move
I have never watched a single Star Wars movie so I have no clue what is happening
Lmao don't work like that. Mitichloriams are in yo blood. Don't increase nor decrease

@@AdmiralChops pretty sure he just needed to come up with something for the sponsorship
If the skill has single target abilities, the theory doesn’t hold. It’s more likely this is like Kylo’s blaster stop.
If both the abilities were the same they would probably be a way to displace an object's atom. But there are notable differences between the 2. Cal's Slow fazes objects while Kylo's Freeze does not. So they are probably using different force powers.
I was about to say the same. If the guy was just making his own time faster everything should get slowed.
YES THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING
@@asian_shortness3992 he froze Poe at the same time as the blaster bolt
Gameplay purposes.
That's the downside. When you slow down one object all the objects around it speed up.
Gameplay purposes or not, the fact that it is targeted dismisses any inferences based on it just speeding yourself up and because it has always functioned that way, it is 100% canonical.
this is what happens when you have people who didn't play the game write an episode for you

Dude he’s not saying it’s exact science he said pseudoscience as in some things can be explained but it’s not a real concrete science

The theory falls apart when only 1 entity is slowed and the others keep going. Should have stuck with energy manipulation and electromagnetism.
I was thinking the same thing. It's only after you upgrade the skill that it effects more than one thing.
Exactly, whole theory blows up when. He slows down 1 person but everyone around him keeps moving at the same pace.
literally he explains this in the video 15:59
Qutous Aki Saying that it’s just a theory doesn’t explain it. He didn’t even address the issue at hand
lol i was just about to comment that, but u explained it better anyway.
The perfect thing to listen to as I make my cell model that I was supposed to do yesterday.
Force Stasis is seen as light side even though the idea is that you're freezing your enemy in place so you can cut them down without them being able to defend yourself.
ok weaboo
There is a "force fast" in Jedi Academy, it's one of the first essential skills you get.

Matpat: what if we are just speeding ourselfs up?
Me: *looks at screen. Sees only one object being slowed.* i feel betrayed.
an attempt was made
Also, the force user's fall speed remains normal when using force slow.
I'm sorry, but this one felt a bit lazy to me... and forced, haha joke. *rolls eyes*
@@christopherhornback4000 I feel the same way. If they use force slow in other media, maybe they could do it like Matpat's explanation were everything is slowed down instead of just one object
It doesn’t really make sense because when there are like 3 people and you freeze 1, the other two are still moving at the same speed
I still really think that in fact, what he does is place a heavy force field arround the target to try to restrict their movement.
Doesn't make scene?
Yeah, it doesn't really make a scene
To be fair none of it actually makes sense lol.
Samuel J it’s a therory and also video game logic which video game logic never lines up because if these were possible the game would become to easy so matpat is not entirely looking at a game play standpoint but a universal stand point

"THAT'S NOT HOW THE FORCE WORKS!"
Han Solo 2015
This is a fun episode, I liked the content. I thought that Obi-Wan's explanation of the force "It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together." Meant that it literally binds the universe and runs through all matter, so if you can manipulate the force, you could slow something's movement.
Game theory: you can’t actually touch something
Me: *smacks wall*
That's not you touching the wall, that's you being repulsed by the magnetic repulision of the electrons in the atoms that make up the wall.
