sounds a bit like me, well in elementary i had a problem with the staff of me correcting and debunking what was being taught to us from the teachers like misconceptions and such, i believe people should know the whole, unabridged truth (but have the option to have an abridged version) and i did not want to let the kids believe false information, i had to go to the principles office with my parents 2 or 3 times because of that, i consumed vast quantity of knowledge in my first 10 years of life and i still like absorbing some everyday, even if for seemingly meaningless, not practical irl stuff.

The Spartan-II program kidnapped these soldiers since before they were 6 years old, and since that time they were trained to know ONLY war. And just before puberty, they were put under extreme physical and chemical enhancements and augmentations. Spartan-II soldiers had muscular enhancements caused by the blockers on a human's muscles being inhibited. They had a reaction time that was increased by 300% of a human's normal time, which allowed them to move with the armor and not try to counter the movement. Under intense stress, they can see the world in bullet time as well as real time. Simple TH-cam searches can confirm this as there are many many videos showing the un-armored Spartan-IIs capabilities. They were a force to be reckoned with even without the Mjolnir platform.
He clearly meant in relation to operating the armor. He said Spartans without the neural link in the armor are just as helpless as the marine that got crushed, and this is true. Spartans cannot use the armor without it being powered on and linked to their brain.
Matt also does not mention the augmentations at all during the entire video, unless it was in the beginning, which I missed. It seems as if though the entire thing is run by the implant in Chief’s head. But then again, this is 5 years old, and perhaps Matt wasn’t invested in lore.
Okay, this actually kind of drove me crazy and I just had to know how this actually works. Upon extensive research through forums and official halo media I've come to the conclusion that Spartans can operate the armor without the Link. No cannon source that I could find actually states specifically whether or not this is required, but it seems to be the case based on a myriad of other factors. Some such cases being Spartans literally removing their helmets and still walking around, and being able to physically probably carry this armor around without it assisting their movements. I've also found that the advanced Spartan neural interface was first introduced alongside the Mark V series of armor, which means Chief and many other Spartans operated their equally heavy armor without this insanely fast link, they used the same one as Marines (Maybe still better but not even close to the Spartan one). If this were the case, the marine should have had no issue. It has to be that the physical strain of using it is simply too high, and that a high reaction time is required. He still only meant helpless inside the suit tho since he specifically mentioned needing the neural link to use it, the whole video is talking about severing that killing the wearer since the suit would uncontrollable. (Which yeah is still probably wrong), But I'm sure MatPat knew Spartans were crazy strong, and I respect your passion for Halo.

Have you seen how powerful a spartan is? If an enemy spartan decides to punch a spartan I actually do believe that the armors offensive capabilities of the enemy spartan will overwhelm the defensive capabilities of a spartans armor.
I think the expert had the better idea. You are being hit by other people in 1 Ton Armor in Multiplayer. Each piece of armor is connected by flimsy material. One punch to the head with the weight of a spartan behind it is gonna give that 100 LB helmet a damn good knock, and the neck attached to it is unlikely to be prepared for that kind of whiplash.

Just imagine the sheer force if something the weight of a tank hits you as fast as a human punch. Often, it is not the direct physical damage that kills people on high impacts. It's the sudden force.

You would also need to take into account the fact that these are soldiers with the strength to flip vehicles on a whim. The force behind one of those punches could easily be the same as being hit by medium sized car or truck.
ShapeTick, "it" will survive but not the guy inside - just take a look at these bomb-defuse squads with their suits... The suit will most likely survive the explosion but the guy inside won't because of the pure force of the impact.
Cdtforerunner that was exactly what I was thinking. The suits were obviously made to boost strength and give more protection. The suits with their weight would also most likely have quite the lack of ability to accelerate, so the armor (and John's arm) would ram straight into the back of the enemy's head. (Also the reason i never commented 3 months ago when this first came out cuz i had no channel.)
Everybody seems to be forgetting the fact that every time a spartan is punched, it's either another mechanically altered spartan or 10-foot elite that is doing it. Naturally, this makes death a lot more likely.

No, cause this is Spartan vs. Spartan. So it'll be as equal as a human vs. human or a snail vs. a snail. I was at first annoyed that Pat doesnt told the armorer guy about the fact of modified body of Spartans, but in the end Pat talks about it. So it wasnt the suit that was made for Spartans, but the Spartans that were made for the suit, as normal unmodified human would be crushed to death by the heavy and responsive armor. So they need a being that capable enough of enduring the crushing and able to sync with the armor. Born Spartans.

Nice video, but you extremely overlooked the very clear and very obvious real reason why Spartans die in a two punches in multiplayer (it takes more in campaign usually unless it's a really powerful enemy on a harder difficulty). It's really because they're getting punched BY OTHER SPARTANS. Spartans along with MJOLNIR augmentation pack such a punch that the MJOLNIR packs a bigger punch than it can handle in return. It can't take what it can dish out despite its incredibly strong protection.
Although this is awesome how you show people the science of the armour, the fact you die in two melee hits is purely down to how the multiplayer is balanced - variable gameplay mechanics are non-canonical but some points you make in this are right! Short and more canonical answer to this video is because 1 hit kills to the back is that the suits nuclear power is there, and damaging that fatally will cause the suit to lock up and potentially kill the wearer!
ACTUALLY there is a science behind getting punched and dying. To put it simple the only thing as strong as a spartan is another Spartan. Like fighting fire with fire.
I think one thing you're not touching on that should be considered relevant is the relative forces involved in these punches. A person's punching power can be deadly to others if you're talking about a strong person hitting you in the wrong place, but there's no human being that could punch with the force of a 1000 pound suit + body enhancements + extra strength from the suit itself. Canonically, the force involved from that would be like getting hit by a car on the surface area of a fist. That would kill anybody instantly, neural link or not!Unlike taking bullets/other shots, which are relatively light, the acceleration/momentum from getting your head nailed by such a strike would only partially be cushioned by armor...and you need that to be a pretty freaking huge "part" or it would fracture the skull. If we're going to accept the stats on these suits at all, there's no getting around that a punch from one would carry blunt tremendous blunt force trauma greater than most of the game's weapons (and stuff like rockets can and do 1-shot you also, in contrast with bullets)

When you consider most often these attacks come while running, and even accelerate you in the direction of the target at a speed equal to the basic sprint speed in the game. Your punches are almost always at around 50 mph (basing it off of Chief's top run speeds) That's 1000 tons, coming at 50mph + whatever the speed of the punch is. And 100% of the energy is transfered (you stop moving after a melee) into the area of a single fist. Most of it isn't physically possible to begin with, but going with the whole "game physics allows anything" cop out, that's enough force to punch down a building if you wanted. I just put these numbers into a force calculator, and the force of 1 punch would be over 5 times greater than the force of a sniper shot at close range. Book physics would obviously lower that, because it doesn't have to worry about gameplay, but that's what's happening in-game when you punch someone.
YuutakaIzumi To help with your calculations a bit. Usain Bolt ran around 28 MPH in his sprint, Master chief was around 60-70 mph. So roughly double the speed. A fastball pitcher throws a baseball around 100-105mph, so a spartan punch would likely be around 200mph + 50-70 from sprinting as fast as possible.
The first segment were you were saying you couldn't aim with the rifle cuz they kept moving was so relatable, takes a lot of practice to snipe someone in multiplayer

they're referencing the mark 4 armor which didn't have energy shields The Fall Of Reach novel explains when and how John got an upgrade to the next version of the Mjolnir armor.
Factor in the fact that the Spartans are 5 times stronger than the average human, and have Carbide Ceramic bones. The average human punch has 3,300 Newtons of Force so a Spartans is around 16,500 Newtons of Force, put that through a MJOLNIR which doubles that strength to the least, 33,000 Newtons. MJOLNIR also increases the reaction speed to nearly unchartable. Now if one Spartan melees another in the back of the neck or skull, they're being hit by a Titanium armoured fist with 1000lbs of armour behind it, moving so fast it could be missed, and making contact with at least 33,000 Newtons or 3.3 TONS of force. On such a small area, factoring in the surface area of the front of the fist which I'd estimate is around 3 inches x 4.5 inches, that gives us a surface area of 13.5 square inches the sheer force, speed and small area of kinetic energy transfer, that force will translate through the armour, through the Spartans Reinforced bones, and into the soft tissues underneath. Even a Spartans spinal cord or brain can't take the force of 3.3 tones rippling through it at close to the speed of sound.

not just that, it fails to mention how the suits when needed can boost the spartans muscle mass and increase their strength tenfold, they should really have read up on the lore of the game before making this, seems such a little amount of research went into it compared to some of there other videos
the reason melee attacks are fatal is because the suits use alien tec for a sort of force field system, and melee attacks for through that shield. Keep in mind that they are also be HIT with a 1000lbs suit

The suit is waterproof, I dont actually know from where in the Halo universe the idea that is isnt waterproof would have come from, a Spartan can survive in outer space in their suit, theyre air-tight.
The closest thing to not being waterproof is that you cannot swim while wearing the suit, which is why during gameplay you die by falling into deep water, woulndt actually kill the Spartan theyd just have to slowly walk along the sea/river bed to get out.

NearEDGE The suit is assembled around the wearer. The undersheathing can be removed, but the actual armor part of the suit has to be unassembled first. Also, they use catheters in actual real-life spacesuits, to allow the astronauts to pee during spacewalks, so it goes to reason that in 500 or so years they will have perfected the technology (as much as you can perfect something like that lol). As for how Cheif handles "number two", well... That's anyone's guess lol. Guess he just goes before each mission? That, or there's some pretty amazing waste recycling technology happening in there. :P
Its also power armor, Chief with the suit on has enough strength to lift a several tonne tank up and even punch a car onto its side. Spartans aren't just punching somebody, they're effectively hitting another being with the same kinetic energy a car crash might have, of course that'd kill somebody, no suit of armor has safeguards to dodge that kind of kinetic energy spread over that wide an area. Seriously Matt, how did you miss that, the same book you're quoting even talks about this.
I believe he discarded this considering the armor was able to survive and maintain the wearer safe after literally falling from space. A car crash can't compare to that. I apologize if this sounds weird, but I can't find the words I need xP

Even then he had a chance of dying actually in that fall as well and was lucky to live that is how I see it anyway. In the end it all depends on the force and where that force is being applied if enough of it is applied anything can happen.

Answer; Spartan armour is powered armour that greatly enhances the wearer's strength (they can flip over main battle tanks, for fuck's sake) and they die to one punch from *another spartan* only AFTER their shielding has been taken down by either other strikes or gunfire. Maybe one from the back by breaking the neck or spinal column. Against non-spartains they only get immediately taken down by an energy sword or a gravity hammer, both of which are extremely powerful. No other melee hits will take them out immediately.
+MGlBlaze Flipping tanks is what we call gameplay and story segregation. Seeing as a Scorpion tank weighs 66 tons, doing this is completely inconsistent with all other feats of strength performed by Spartans in-game and in the stories. Being able to flip vehicles at all was implemented with the Warthog and Mongoose in mind because those things have such a high center of gravity; this basically never happens with tanks outside of Forge mode. In actuality the armor's only supposed to provide a couple tons' worth of lift force, which is still probably enough to do some damage.
Apart from the fact that THE OTHER PERSON PUNCHING IS A SPARTAN, it could also be the neck braking because the MJOLNIR armour weighs waaaaaay more than the ODST armour. Still, great video!

From what I had researched, Spartans can remove their helmets without needing any assistance form machinery, the other part of the armor they do. So, the neural connection doesn't have anything to do for them dying, plus.... they can lift a freaking elephant (and I mean the vehicle form halo 3) without a problem... yes, that is canonical. The armor depending on which version we are talking about can or can't do certain things, for example, in Halo CE was the first Spartan armor with shield distributed to all Spartans 2, John is the first one to receive it (which, thats why Linda [or Kelly, don't actually remember who] was critically injured from their previous battle on reach... and yeah, that doesn't explain why noble team had shields, but remember that Bungie hated the books and like to destroy the lore (don't get me wrong, I love Reach, but it has a lot of mistakes in the story). What kills the spartan from one single punch is the enhancements in their DNA, canonically speaking, they can not just kill a marine with one punch, they convert their bones into dust. And that's why John killed 3 ODST in.... 15 seconds? It is pretty fast and looks comical in the movie, but yeah, they died (The Fall of Reach, the movie).

sounds a bit like me, well in elementary i had a problem with the staff of me correcting and debunking what was being taught to us from the teachers like misconceptions and such, i believe people should know the whole, unabridged truth (but have the option to have an abridged version) and i did not want to let the kids believe false information, i had to go to the principles office with my parents 2 or 3 times because of that, i consumed vast quantity of knowledge in my first 10 years of life and i still like absorbing some everyday, even if for seemingly meaningless, not practical irl stuff.

The Spartan-II program kidnapped these soldiers since before they were 6 years old, and since that time they were trained to know ONLY war. And just before puberty, they were put under extreme physical and chemical enhancements and augmentations. Spartan-II soldiers had muscular enhancements caused by the blockers on a human's muscles being inhibited. They had a reaction time that was increased by 300% of a human's normal time, which allowed them to move with the armor and not try to counter the movement. Under intense stress, they can see the world in bullet time as well as real time.
Simple TH-cam searches can confirm this as there are many many videos showing the un-armored Spartan-IIs capabilities. They were a force to be reckoned with even without the Mjolnir platform.

He clearly meant in relation to operating the armor. He said Spartans without the neural link in the armor are just as helpless as the marine that got crushed, and this is true. Spartans cannot use the armor without it being powered on and linked to their brain.
Matt also does not mention the augmentations at all during the entire video, unless it was in the beginning, which I missed. It seems as if though the entire thing is run by the implant in Chief’s head. But then again, this is 5 years old, and perhaps Matt wasn’t invested in lore.
Okay, this actually kind of drove me crazy and I just had to know how this actually works.
Upon extensive research through forums and official halo media I've come to the conclusion that Spartans can operate the armor without the Link. No cannon source that I could find actually states specifically whether or not this is required, but it seems to be the case based on a myriad of other factors. Some such cases being Spartans literally removing their helmets and still walking around, and being able to physically probably carry this armor around without it assisting their movements.
I've also found that the advanced Spartan neural interface was first introduced alongside the Mark V series of armor, which means Chief and many other Spartans operated their equally heavy armor without this insanely fast link, they used the same one as Marines (Maybe still better but not even close to the Spartan one). If this were the case, the marine should have had no issue. It has to be that the physical strain of using it is simply too high, and that a high reaction time is required.
He still only meant helpless inside the suit tho since he specifically mentioned needing the neural link to use it, the whole video is talking about severing that killing the wearer since the suit would uncontrollable. (Which yeah is still probably wrong), But I'm sure MatPat knew Spartans were crazy strong, and I respect your passion for Halo.

I think the expert had the better idea. You are being hit by other people in 1 Ton Armor in Multiplayer. Each piece of armor is connected by flimsy material. One punch to the head with the weight of a spartan behind it is gonna give that 100 LB helmet a damn good knock, and the neck attached to it is unlikely to be prepared for that kind of whiplash.

ShapeTick, "it" will survive but not the guy inside - just take a look at these bomb-defuse squads with their suits... The suit will most likely survive the explosion but the guy inside won't because of the pure force of the impact.

Cdtforerunner that was exactly what I was thinking. The suits were obviously made to boost strength and give more protection. The suits with their weight would also most likely have quite the lack of ability to accelerate, so the armor (and John's arm) would ram straight into the back of the enemy's head. (Also the reason i never commented 3 months ago when this first came out cuz i had no channel.)
If spartans can somehow flip an Elephant I'm surprised they don't turn anything they punch into mist.

No, cause this is Spartan vs. Spartan. So it'll be as equal as a human vs. human or a snail vs. a snail. I was at first annoyed that Pat doesnt told the armorer guy about the fact of modified body of Spartans, but in the end Pat talks about it. So it wasnt the suit that was made for Spartans, but the Spartans that were made for the suit, as normal unmodified human would be crushed to death by the heavy and responsive armor. So they need a being that capable enough of enduring the crushing and able to sync with the armor. Born Spartans.

Nice video, but you extremely overlooked the very clear and very obvious real reason why Spartans die in a two punches in multiplayer (it takes more in campaign usually unless it's a really powerful enemy on a harder difficulty). It's really because they're getting punched BY OTHER SPARTANS. Spartans along with MJOLNIR augmentation pack such a punch that the MJOLNIR packs a bigger punch than it can handle in return. It can't take what it can dish out despite its incredibly strong protection.

Although this is awesome how you show people the science of the armour, the fact you die in two melee hits is purely down to how the multiplayer is balanced - variable gameplay mechanics are non-canonical but some points you make in this are right!
Short and more canonical answer to this video is because 1 hit kills to the back is that the suits nuclear power is there, and damaging that fatally will cause the suit to lock up and potentially kill the wearer!

ACTUALLY there is a science behind getting punched and dying. To put it simple the only thing as strong as a spartan is another Spartan. Like fighting fire with fire.
I think one thing you're not touching on that should be considered relevant is the relative forces involved in these punches. A person's punching power can be deadly to others if you're talking about a strong person hitting you in the wrong place, but there's no human being that could punch with the force of a 1000 pound suit + body enhancements + extra strength from the suit itself. Canonically, the force involved from that would be like getting hit by a car on the surface area of a fist. That would kill anybody instantly, neural link or not!Unlike taking bullets/other shots, which are relatively light, the acceleration/momentum from getting your head nailed by such a strike would only partially be cushioned by armor...and you need that to be a pretty freaking huge "part" or it would fracture the skull. If we're going to accept the stats on these suits at all, there's no getting around that a punch from one would carry blunt tremendous blunt force trauma greater than most of the game's weapons (and stuff like rockets can and do 1-shot you also, in contrast with bullets)

When you consider most often these attacks come while running, and even accelerate you in the direction of the target at a speed equal to the basic sprint speed in the game. Your punches are almost always at around 50 mph (basing it off of Chief's top run speeds) That's 1000 tons, coming at 50mph + whatever the speed of the punch is. And 100% of the energy is transfered (you stop moving after a melee) into the area of a single fist. Most of it isn't physically possible to begin with, but going with the whole "game physics allows anything" cop out, that's enough force to punch down a building if you wanted. I just put these numbers into a force calculator, and the force of 1 punch would be over 5 times greater than the force of a sniper shot at close range. Book physics would obviously lower that, because it doesn't have to worry about gameplay, but that's what's happening in-game when you punch someone.

Usain Bolt ran around 28 MPH in his sprint, Master chief was around 60-70 mph. So roughly double the speed.
A fastball pitcher throws a baseball around 100-105mph, so a spartan punch would likely be around 200mph + 50-70 from sprinting as fast as possible.

they're referencing the mark 4 armor which didn't have energy shields The Fall Of Reach novel explains when and how John got an upgrade to the next version of the Mjolnir armor.
Factor in the fact that the Spartans are 5 times stronger than the average human, and have Carbide Ceramic bones. The average human punch has 3,300 Newtons of Force so a Spartans is around 16,500 Newtons of Force, put that through a MJOLNIR which doubles that strength to the least, 33,000 Newtons. MJOLNIR also increases the reaction speed to nearly unchartable. Now if one Spartan melees another in the back of the neck or skull, they're being hit by a Titanium armoured fist with 1000lbs of armour behind it, moving so fast it could be missed, and making contact with at least 33,000 Newtons or 3.3 TONS of force. On such a small area, factoring in the surface area of the front of the fist which I'd estimate is around 3 inches x 4.5 inches, that gives us a surface area of 13.5 square inches the sheer force, speed and small area of kinetic energy transfer, that force will translate through the armour, through the Spartans Reinforced bones, and into the soft tissues underneath. Even a Spartans spinal cord or brain can't take the force of 3.3 tones rippling through it at close to the speed of sound.

the reason melee attacks are fatal is because the suits use alien tec for a sort of force field system, and melee attacks for through that shield. Keep in mind that they are also be HIT with a 1000lbs suit

The suit is waterproof, I dont actually know from where in the Halo universe the idea that is isnt waterproof would have come from, a Spartan can survive in outer space in their suit, theyre air-tight.
The closest thing to not being waterproof is that you cannot swim while wearing the suit, which is why during gameplay you die by falling into deep water, woulndt actually kill the Spartan theyd just have to slowly walk along the sea/river bed to get out.

The helmet is the only part of the suit that's removable.
NearEDGE The suit is assembled around the wearer. The undersheathing can be removed, but the actual armor part of the suit has to be unassembled first.
Also, they use catheters in actual real-life spacesuits, to allow the astronauts to pee during spacewalks, so it goes to reason that in 500 or so years they will have perfected the technology (as much as you can perfect something like that lol).
As for how Cheif handles "number two", well... That's anyone's guess lol. Guess he just goes before each mission? That, or there's some pretty amazing waste recycling technology happening in there. :P
Its also power armor, Chief with the suit on has enough strength to lift a several tonne tank up and even punch a car onto its side.
Spartans aren't just punching somebody, they're effectively hitting another being with the same kinetic energy a car crash might have, of course that'd kill somebody, no suit of armor has safeguards to dodge that kind of kinetic energy spread over that wide an area.
Seriously Matt, how did you miss that, the same book you're quoting even talks about this.
I believe he discarded this considering the armor was able to survive and maintain the wearer safe after literally falling from space. A car crash can't compare to that.

Even then he had a chance of dying actually in that fall as well and was lucky to live that is how I see it anyway. In the end it all depends on the force and where that force is being applied if enough of it is applied anything can happen.

Yep, that's why they go through training and body augmentation as children through the spartan programs.
Now I understand why they call it the Mjollnir armor couse that thing heavy as hell and you would have to be worthy of wearing it.
Answer; Spartan armour is powered armour that greatly enhances the wearer's strength (they can flip over main battle tanks, for fuck's sake) and they die to one punch from *another spartan* only AFTER their shielding has been taken down by either other strikes or gunfire. Maybe one from the back by breaking the neck or spinal column. Against non-spartains they only get immediately taken down by an energy sword or a gravity hammer, both of which are extremely powerful. No other melee hits will take them out immediately.

Seeing as a Scorpion tank weighs 66 tons, doing this is completely inconsistent with all other feats of strength performed by Spartans in-game and in the stories. Being able to flip vehicles at all was implemented with the Warthog and Mongoose in mind because those things have such a high center of gravity; this basically never happens with tanks outside of Forge mode. In actuality the armor's only supposed to provide a couple tons' worth of lift force, which is still probably enough to do some damage.

Yeah true but only when standing when someone knocks you over you fall down making the suit crush you like nothing cuz it's heavyweight right so yeah and anyway standing still in the middle of the war or combat will kill you you can be shoot Easley or kill.
From what I had researched, Spartans can remove their helmets without needing any assistance form machinery, the other part of the armor they do. So, the neural connection doesn't have anything to do for them dying, plus.... they can lift a freaking elephant (and I mean the vehicle form halo 3) without a problem... yes, that is canonical. The armor depending on which version we are talking about can or can't do certain things, for example, in Halo CE was the first Spartan armor with shield distributed to all Spartans 2, John is the first one to receive it (which, thats why Linda [or Kelly, don't actually remember who] was critically injured from their previous battle on reach... and yeah, that doesn't explain why noble team had shields, but remember that Bungie hated the books and like to destroy the lore (don't get me wrong, I love Reach, but it has a lot of mistakes in the story). What kills the spartan from one single punch is the enhancements in their DNA, canonically speaking, they can not just kill a marine with one punch, they convert their bones into dust. And that's why John killed 3 ODST in.... 15 seconds? It is pretty fast and looks comical in the movie, but yeah, they died (The Fall of Reach, the movie).
