I remember watching this when it came out thinking I would never be able to own a model 3 or any Tesla for that matter. Fast forward 6 years and I finally can say I bought one.
I remember balking at the idea of a $40-50k car being "affordable". Fast forward to three days ago, I was reading about how the used prices have cratered. I did some math and found it would be cheaper to finance a used Model 3 than to keep driving my _paid-for_ gas car (given that I can charge for free at work). Also, that math assumed gas prices would stay at $5 and my aging gas car would never need major repairs-neither of which are true. It was not a difficult decision at that point.
Tom SoulSplit he definitely didn’t change it for that reason. He wanted it to be an E but couldn’t. He claims ford killed sex. I figured it was the ford Vans though E-150- E-350 and not an electric car.
Marcus Jarrell Tesla is growing strong in California too almost everywhere I go Tesla literally right there I love mopar cars aka v8 cars but i think I want a model 3 as my first car for now then upgrade to model x and a mopar car
I've watched this video like 5 times on this point over the years. And I'm watching it now...and I own an AWD Model 3...yeah that's how you know you've made a good video lol
It is. Tesla designed this car as if self-driving would be legal when it finally gets built in bulk (laughs). Until then it is a stupid design decision, but I have a feeling it was more for cost-cutting instead. Tesla is doing what Apple does best; take away features, and then goes to a million reasons why it is a good idea. Tesla fanboys however would gobble up everything their god Elon says however.
A ~$20k Mazda 3 comes with a dashboard & for a few thousand more, a HUD standard. Why does a ~$40k compact executive luxury sedan doesn't is beyond me. Don't try to defend greedy decisions.
@željko šimić The Model 3 speedometer, which is the only thing on the screen that is used relatively often, is highly visible. It's large, bright, high up and immediately next to the hand on the steering wheel. In fact it's higher and clearer than a speedometer down in a dashboard. No one who has actually driven a Model 3 has difficulty seeing the speedometer.

The car has preset profiles so you get in, click your name, then the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors automatically adjust to your preset it’s amaxing
A great solution I'd like to see would be a HUD (Heads-Up-Display). This would give you the option to have old-school gauges right in front of you. Heck, it could even be customizable!!!
I like it a lot. Tons of fun to drive and every passenger I’ve taken in it has been blown away by it. When I was washing it for the first time however, I noticed some imperfections in the paint job that kind of bummed me out. There’s little dots without paint in a few places on the car, not noticeable unless you’re looking for it but I’m still going to take it in to see if they’ll fix it.
That would make the car more complicated. They had enormous hassles with the unnecessary complexity of the model X - they've taken the right approach with the 3...
I feel that, while it might be annoying in regular use, features like heated seats, navigation, climate control, and media controls are somewhat excusable to not have tactile controls but dome lights, headlights, and the parking brake are inexcusable. Its kinda dumb if this multimillion dollar company can't dish out a couple more dollars per car to put in some plastic buttons in order to do basic functions.
Important to know during a rainy day, do not open the rear trunk as the water would reflect to the windshield and fall inside your trunk. Tesla never thought of this and the rain gutter isn't good.
Gabriel Ribeiro lol that's different I understand things change over time but it's also making everyone lazy sometimes you can learn a skill that isn't really necessary but it's still good to have it just so you can say you know how to do
when you about to go away from your car but it havent locked yet and you see someone that tries to steal the car (starts running faster away from the car)
Avi RBLX What's stopping the thieves from stealing everything in your car then? The Model 3 key feature is flawed and you know it. The car will only lock when you walk a specific distance away. What if you never notice someone opens your door as you walk away? Is the owner suppose to walk backwards to make sure the car is locked before he/she fully walks away? Like I said in my comment, the phone app key made the key less functional. Its so much easier to lock the car and walk away. This way *YOU KNOW* its locked when you leave.
Aquilam true, but he was reviewing the Long Range rather than the Performance model :) so 0-60 for him was 5.something seconds and I suppose lots of cars can do that now (still sounds very fast to me, I’m happy with 7.something!)
@@alexshepherd I forgot to check the variable specs for the first generation (Model 3), now with updates the base model does 0-60 in 5.3 (still quick), long range does in in 4.4s, and performance model does it in 3.2s - which would be in exotic car territory for under $50k.
One thing to factor into the "Doug score" for styling is it's comparison to every other EV out currently. It doesn't look like a clown car. It just looks like.. a car. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Honestly it seems almost expected in this car ... like this is one car that a heads up display would fit perfectly.... but I guess Tesla didnt think so lol
So if this car somehow gets submerged how are your backseat passengers going to get out? If Elon Musk can't even think of this I'm not trusting him with designing MY car. REPLY
Faheem Jamaloodeen mate. How often does your car get submerged. Now think about how often cars crash... This is the safest car out there. There might be a one in 10,000 chance of getting submerged and there’s also a great chance that there is no one in the back. Meanwhile it’s very likely to be in a car crash.
Never forget it when getting IN the car, but I forget my phone all the time getting OUT which is horrific because it means 1) the car isn't locked and 2) anyone could just get in and drive away. Thankfully I've gotten in the habit of checking my pocket and I have never gone too far from the car before realizing but yeah I wish I could find some way to make sure I don't forget it in the car.

My buddy is 6’4. We sat in it and I can confirm there is enough headroom. The seats are low due to the size of the battery. I’d prefer it higher with less headroom but he was happy with it. Long trips wouldn’t be ideal, but there’s no way he’d be able to do a long road trip in my 4 series gran coupe anyway, waaaay less headroom.
BMW X1's even had a decent heads up. I'm going to be in the market for a Model 3 in about 3 years, so I'm really hoping they work these little kinks out by then.
in about 3yrs i'm going to buy Lexus EV with the lvl4/5 autonomy.... in the next 3-5yrs Ford and Toyota is planing to launch cars that would be better than the Model 3 in every way.... and it'll be cheaper... this Model3 is what is going to make or break Tesla, there is no more chances for Tesla...

The single best thing about TESLA is that, true to Elon Musk's plan, TESLA has sparked panic in all other car manufactures to also produce all electric cars. Thanks to TESLA for blazing the trail for the future of cars in the world!
No, I'm saying that TESLA has "Blazed The Trail", and now all of the major car companies (9 of them to date have full electric cars in production for 2019 and 2020) are following TESLA's lead. They will, sooner or later, catch and pass TESLA; and that is a very good thing and all part of Elon Musk's plan.
In the U.k. Gas is $6.50 a gallon. So the electricity costs 25% the cost of gas. And no road taxes. Also you didn't mention the government/local discounts.
I feel like it would be pretty annoying to have to navigate a menu and small buttons on a touch screen while driving to do anything. Especially on a bumpy road or something. Talk about distracted driving. Still it's pretty cool.
orbits2 haha exactly. At least with real buttons and what not you can just feel for them and press them. Not have to look around a screen and maybe accidently hit something.
Surprised there’s no HUD for the gauge cluster. Especially for a car like that! That way all the information is all right in front of you and you don’t have to look down to the side for that stuff.
Thanks for the review. You should consider raising your "value" score to reflect the lower maintenance and fuel costs. (no oil changes, no brake jobs, electricity costs 1/2 as much as gas for driving) Also, for people who are concerned about global warming, there is an added value in knowing you aren't emitting CO2 any more.
rwolf01 Electric cars still use Co2. Just think about where your power is coming from. In many cases it comes form Fracking, and Coal burning. While it lowers the amount of Co2 you put into the Atmosphere, it still doesn’t eradicate all fossil fuels.
James Heathcote that mainly depends on where you live sine if you live in California or around the Pacific Northwest most power either comes from natural gas or hydro electric plants
Yes, but dirty electricity sources can be replaced. Solar, wind, hydro and geothermal are all carbon neutral. A dirty coal plant is a problem no matter how the electricity is being used. So the issue is the plant, NOT the car.

a HUD would be a good idea for it
///ALEX C they were partnered with one of the best bike helmet HUD but ran out of time to do their r&d so that was cancelled
28:22 is it just me or did Tesla redefine the luxury car?
You can buy a Navdy, and connect it to the On-Board Diagnostics port. It works very well.
A ~$20k Mazda 3 comes with a dashboard & for a few thousand more, a HUD standard. Why does a ~$40k compact executive luxury sedan doesn't is beyond me. Don't try to defend greedy decisions.

I Think they should put a head up display including the speed and the signal
I was assuming it had one, until he showed that it doesn't...
Not needed. The speedometer is highly visible in Model 3, and eventually the car may drive itself.
I don’t like the idea of a mandatory HUD. I want to have a clear view when I’m driving somewhere scenic.
@@Henriburger1 To be fair, HUD would usually be in addition to regular instruments, and be switchable on or off.

Tom Yevsikov - tell Elon on his Twitter acct
My Aunts 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix had heads up display... get with the times Elon! Haha
That is a question that i have asked myself because EVERY OTHER CAR COMPANY has a heads-up display in this pricerange or at least as an option.
At 19:20 the owner probably regretted giving him the car
LOL
The car has preset profiles so you get in, click your name, then the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors automatically adjust to your preset it’s amaxing

A great solution I'd like to see would be a HUD (Heads-Up-Display). This would give you the option to have old-school gauges right in front of you. Heck, it could even be customizable!!!
Thanks Doug! Love your reviews.
I agree, it helps greatly at night
It’s the coolest car of 2019 too. Bought mine last month.
dan parish how do you like
I like it a lot.

Yes! A blue minimalist heads up display, like in science fiction movies. We should already have that technology in 2017.
They had ones like that on the Corvette and Grand Prix GTP.
That would make the car more complicated. They had enormous hassles with the unnecessary complexity of the model X - they've taken the right approach with the 3...

I'm all for technology but the fact that this car barely has any tactile controls would annoy the crap out of me.
The batteries are expensive to make at this point. They had to sacrifice something
+Ian Savii I feel like traditional tactile buttons would be cheaper than the giant touchscreen though...
+CWINDOWSsystem32 Maybe, but it would ruin the super simple mysterious look of the model 3
exactly even the lock for the doors are on the screen and where is the gage cluster???the interior sucks...i hate this car...would never buy it
I feel that, while it might be annoying in regular use, features like heated seats, navigation, climate control, and media controls are somewhat excusable to not have tactile controls but dome lights, headlights, and the parking brake are inexcusable. Its kinda dumb if this multimillion dollar company can't dish out a couple more dollars per car to put in some plastic buttons in order to do basic functions.
32 minute video and just 1 ad. You sir are the best TH-camr
Important to know during a rainy day, do not open the rear trunk as the water would reflect to the windshield and fall inside your trunk. Tesla never thought of this and the rain gutter isn't good.

Should have a heads up display... You should never have to look away from the road to see your speed.
You mean like you do in every single other car that doesn't have a hud?
But yes, a hud would be nice.
The technology is there, especially for a tesla, should be standard.
Having to glance for speed is this one thing I really hate about driving.
The dashboard is so dull
Even I thought d same , I think they might add that in their nxt facelifted version.
when you about to go away from your car but it havent locked yet and you see someone that tries to steal the car (starts running faster away from the car)
Kabel TV it won't start unless the key card/phone is in the car
Sounds backwards but thats true
lol
Avi RBLX thats so fucking stupid then why not just make a key
Avi RBLX What's stopping the thieves from stealing everything in your car then? The Model 3 key feature is flawed and you know it. The car will only lock when you walk a specific distance away. What if you never notice someone opens your door as you walk away? Is the owner suppose to walk backwards to make sure the car is locked before he/she fully walks away? Like I said in my comment, the phone app key made the key less functional. Its so much easier to lock the car and walk away. This way *YOU KNOW* its locked when you leave.
It would be really cool if they put a heads up display in the car instead of The speed being on the screen
0-60 in 3.5 seconds, same as an aston martin vantage gt12....doug score? "5 out of 10". Per dollar you can't beat the 3 in performance.
@@alexshepherd shit my car goes 0-100kmh (60mph) in 13 seconds lol
It's based on a general chart. What I drive can hit 60 in about 5.7 seconds. Not slow, but could be better.

One thing to factor into the "Doug score" for styling is it's comparison to every other EV out currently. It doesn't look like a clown car. It just looks like.. a car.

NEEDS A HEADS UP DISPLAY
Brendan Hickey like some kind of high tech "holograph" gauge layout maybe
Or just a head up display....
Honestly it seems almost expected in this car ... like this is one car that a heads up display would fit perfectly.... but I guess Tesla didnt think so lol
Brendan Hickey With the bottlenecks they already have in producing it, I think you wouldn't want to add more complexity to the assembly line.
I understand this car isn't for everybody, but for many of us it is perfect.
Yasser A I wanna be part of the people have the opportunity to buy one.
So if this car somehow gets submerged how are your backseat passengers going to get out? If Elon Musk can't even think of this I'm not trusting him with designing MY car.

+Faheem Jamaloodeen Notice the big window on the roof? You can crack it and get out way easier than through a doorwindow like in most cars.
Shit car
Faheem Jamaloodeen mate. How often does your car get submerged. Now think about how often cars crash... This is the safest car out there. There might be a one in 10,000 chance of getting submerged and there’s also a great chance that there is no one in the back. Meanwhile it’s very likely to be in a car crash.
Tesla is a type of car which will never let you forget your phone
Never forget it when getting IN the car, but I forget my phone all the time getting OUT which is horrific because it means 1) the car isn't locked and 2) anyone could just get in and drive away. Thankfully I've gotten in the habit of checking my pocket and I have never gone too far from the car before realizing but yeah I wish I could find some way to make sure I don't forget it in the car.

This comes out in about 6 months here in Australia, with the performance option that does 0-100 in 3.2 seconds! Insane, so cheap as well

The single best thing about TESLA is that, true to Elon Musk's plan, TESLA has sparked panic in all other car manufactures to also produce all electric cars. Thanks to TESLA for blazing the trail for the future of cars in the world!
Bill Kabitz Tesla*, not TESLA.
+Alden Buyer
So you are saying the other car manufacturers letting Tesla taking over the market? Hmm, is that a smart move?
No, I'm saying that TESLA has "Blazed The Trail", and now all of the major car companies (9 of them to date have full electric cars in production for 2019 and 2020) are following TESLA's lead. They will, sooner or later, catch and pass TESLA; and that is a very good thing and all part of Elon Musk's plan.
Whatever

Jeff Solis which is why its 3 or 4 times three cost of the rest of the United States
Out of warranty maintenance & repairs or body damage is very expensive. Also insurance rates for all Tesla owners are now higher then others.
Yes, but dirty electricity sources can be replaced. Solar, wind, hydro and geothermal are all carbon neutral. A dirty coal plant is a problem no matter how the electricity is being used. So the issue is the plant, NOT the car.
