Wow is it really THE Alec Steele? I mean I figured this collab would draw some near TH-cam fab fan royalty out but didn't know it would be you good Sir. I mean what's next OxTool or Adam Boothe?????
My wife saw me watching this, and thought I was nuts for wanting to make a dustpan. Not understanding that it has nothing to do with the dustpan, it’s the process of learning metal work.
Exactly! Now I can make a dust pan shaped hood scoop! (no seriously, this is really cool information, glad guys like Ron & ToT are sharing this kind of knowledge!)
"There's more to life than just being practical." You have no idea how long I've been looking for those words to describe doing things for the fun of it.
Your way of teaching really reminds me of Bob Ross', showing how accessible things can be in a calm and simple manner. Thank you for putting this out there for the world to see, you now have yet another new subscriber.
I see TOT mentioned in a title in my recommended and I can't see a situation where my curiosity isn't immediately activated. I must say I was not disappointed and now I have a new channel to watch. I'm starting to think that the TH-cam algorithm is finally starting to work. Let's just hope it isn't a fluke. 😉👍
To anyone new to Ron Covell he's been producing metalworking videos since long before TH-cam....to have him say ToT is his favorite channel is seriously high praise in the world of metalwork and custom cars.
Everyone subscribe to Ron's channel and share with your fellow metalworkers. Ron's a pro, he deserves more viewers! I bought a DVD bundle from his website about 10 years ago and learned a lot.
Wow - thanks so much for chiming in! If there is anyone who doesn't know Aaron's 6061 TH-cam channel, you simply gotta go there! He is definitely one of the best! th-cam.com/users/aaronmlarsen
This could be the most useful 3 videos I have ever watched on TH-cam. So many cool tips and ways to use simple layout tools to achieve a beautiful result. Thank you for doing this.
Looking forward to Part 2. I've got a pedal car that my Dad bought for me when I was 4 or 5 years old (I'm now 69). That pedal car got left behind at the farm when we left so many years ago - every one of my many cousins and I played with that car whenever we visited and it got oh so beat up, covered in dents and is now missing a seat bottom. That dust pan sure looks like it could be modified into a seat bottom for a pedal car ! Admire the craftsmanship and appreciate the willingness to share !
Yes, a hammerform would be great for a pedal car seat. I once built a complete, Packard-inspired pedal car body using a hammerform. It was featured in Tim Remus's book 'Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication': www.amazon.com.au/Ultimate-Sheet-Metal-Fabrication-Timothy/dp/0964135892
Ron, I'm still kind of new to your videos, and I love them a lot. Your way of teaching makes things look achievable. You're not only telling how to make a dust pan. You're telling how to think a fixture that can make a step in my project possible. Thank you. By the way, I love the old tools and machines that are visible in your videos. They have their own style to them. New tools may work the same or sometimes even a little better, but the old ones are much more beautiful.
I love seeing two unique and skilled craftsmen collaborate with a common goal. And teaching the next generation of future craftsmen what gentleman do , how they do it and have fun doing it ! Love it. Love it and the underlying lesson in a beautifully designed and fabricated " dust pan " with the well thought teaching of technique layout and design. The people this was intended for , will get it. Love it ! Thank you the man , the myth, the legend. " Ron " and next generation fabricator/teacher via TH-cam exstrodinair this old Tony. Thanks guys . Loved all three . Just had to come back and watch how it all started again. And this trilogy deserves a great comment. Wish i had something better. Bravo my good men Bravo !!
That dustpan is an excellent shape to show so many techniques. Seeing that complexity is something people could stand to learn alone. Great video Ron. 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow, just a dustpan but so many metal shaping skills, and layout techniques that go into this, and its just the right size for all of us novices to try without feeling overwhelmed, thanks for posting Ron!!
I would have to clean up the workshop to make this dustpan ... I also need an armored cupboard so my family will stop taking out my tools. Greetings from Poland. :)
Oh my goodness. I “work” with wood. Built two houses a caravan, 2 boats etc. But realise from this I have crawling for 73 yrs and you have shown me how to walk!! Everything I “knew” but did not do! Am so grateful for your patient teaching.
Saw the part on T.O.T. and I been a subscriber to both of you for quite a while. You're both Master Craftsman and I have learned many tricks of the trades from both of you. I am building a car from frame up and have seen you build bucks which I have learned from you on many parts that I need to still make since the body parts are not available anymore, even still today 65 years later after production. I have even taken the time to build.my own bead roller after seeing many benefits of having one. Your videos are fantastic and keep them coming.
While I enjoyed this video, I gotta say, as someone who has used a dust pan every day for work (Movie theatres and now Bars) for the last 20 years, I don't really care about the curve of the back, but the ability for the front to stay tight to the ground so I can sweep things in. I'd rather take multiple trips to the trash can for a shallow pan than have to fight to get the material into the pan in the first place. Either way, like the idea of this, sorry for the rant which is really just me sheading off a couple decades of poorly made off the shelf items that I've had to endure.
Well, English grammar has never been my strong point, but somehow saying 'That Old Tony' just doesn't seem right, and just calling him 'Old Tony' seems a bit disrespectful.
Wow...all your techniques are like magic to me. I build a lot of things out of wood and steel, but without too much overlap with your main focus. I hope to learn from you to expand my horizons of building!
Ah , what a great pair , not very often I say that to a man . ......... or two. you really should make three , and give one away , signed by you both and dated of course.
Great video, this is where it’s at for me. That first glimpse of the hammer form process is what first inspired me into getting interested in metal shaping. 👍
Thanks, Trev - so great to have you chime in on this one! Did you notice that I used really simple tools in this video - that's largely because of your suggestion!
Once again, it takes planning and proper techniques to arrive at a quality item. You seem to have that foresight to know that as well and are showing such plans. Bravo sir, Bravo. I can see the form building coming together now.

Wow Im glad I learned of your channel through This old Tony, I really like your way of doing and explaining things. One quick tip for the countersinking(I do a lot of woodwork) is to use the flat of the head on the screw. When the width of the head can just fit into the countersink then its the perfect depth.

Glad you liked it!

I have a VHS copy of working with tubing somewhere, need to get that badboy out and rewatch it...

you sir are a true master in your craft!
Thanks!
Ron Covell is like the Bob Ross of welding!
I consider that a high compliment!
