@@DaNNi2774 and it's incredibly expensive and takes a TON of time and talent that just isn't sustainable or even there anymore. It's basically a lost art at this point. People still do it, but since it isn't commercially viable, most pros don't, and it's trending more and more that direction.
Kids don't know any better, too, they think older is automatically worse, and while there is definitely value to evolving forwards, forwards does not automatically equal better.
Plus, Gainax even at the time was a MASSIVE exception, *towering* over their competition, with nge being kind of their moonshot magnum opus.
@@scmstr Yeah, if it didn't work out they were f'ed. Personally I'm one of the minority that is kind of happy they ran out of money during production since I prefer the original series ending, far more contemplative and abstract plus more satisfying. Not nearly as iconic though.

The '94 version not only looks better to me (look at the use of colors, tones and the hand drawn effects), but the EVA units feel a lot heavier. In the 2.22 version, they feel so weightless...

You're right the newer version it looks like the Eva's movements are effortless as if they are not moving a huge amount of mass. Newer version looks more like sprinters in track suits.
I like that. Because it moves more like a biological entity and less like a robot. And, I like that Asuka and unit 2 specifically move more like a soldier who has been trained to fight in armor, especially that German split jump replacing the close jump. It makes her look more like a soldier trained in Germany, as well as making the Eva look more biological. She even uses the close jump later, at close range where it would make tactical sense. It shows that she's been trained when to use what techniques. @Knivez84
@@mrskellybones4514The old ones twitch, stumble, and have movements that mimic human/mammalian biology, in short they feel imperfect, mind bendingly powerful, insanely durable, and shockingly vulnerable all at once. The X.X.X movies do look amazing, but the EVAs are now so much more powerful, and move like gymnasts/dancers/fighters. Appreciation for subtlety develops with time, you're looking at the polish, dynamism, complexity and creativity without realizing there's been a loss of verisimilitude, meaning it feels less life like to many.

I still love that AT field power up scene. Like F your houses and it really gets across just how massive these things are.
The angel designs the Rebuild series was able to create with new animation technology are awesome, but I personally think the direction and shot composition is better in the original.
High key the angels look super impressive with CGI tech but I feel you on the 90's cinematography
Why did they modify the Eva shot composition? Instead of showing each Eva running their hardest to get to the point in time, they just focused on Unit 01. The point of this angel in the original was to show that they were finally coalescing as a team and each child/Eva are a force to be reckoned with and are nearly unstoppable together as a team. This let the future Angels and their absolute difficulty and over powered nature be that much more impressive.

@@bitterjack the original scene is like 2 minutes or so long where in 2.22 the whole scene is like 6 minutes long so I cut down the rebuild to match the frames from the original. It's supposed to be more of a showcase of the animations and matching frames but the rebuild has this cool scene where unit 01 is redirected by raising the panels on the city to course correct without losing speed. I definitely recommend people watch both
Cinematography and better storyboarding wins over flashy computer generated visuals any time... You're definitely right.
One thing I notice is the general movements in the bots being different. Where 2.22's has all three moving with expert precision, no wasted movements; 94's all have these shaky movements like the pilots themselves are adjusting things in real-time. It makes 94's seem almost more realistic. These are massive mechs being piloted by imperfect beings. Does 2.22 give a better "weight" to them yes. But 94's imperfect motion feels more appropriate
Especially taking into account there's an entire episode in the original series dedicated to getting Shinji and Asuka in sync with each other to save the day
Rebuild evas have automatic transmission, vga brakes and assisted suspension. XD
Plus rhey are giant machines, their feet shouldnt curve as they step, the limbs shouldnt move as freely as a persons.

I like the stationary camera direction of the old one, as if from a person's perspective. And details like the wires and others giving them mass.
The clearly CG parts in the new one look cheesy. That being said, it's not bad at all but the original 94 one looks/feels better.
I like the look of the Angel in the new one, I'm sure on the storyboard the design looked great, but in practice seeing it in CLEARLY CG makes it look like got carried away and now it's so far removed from the rest of the animation it looks out of place (through it's clearly visual CG).
Looking at modern anime these days with so much CGI makes one appreciate the 90's style.
I like how heavy 2.22 is, every step of an Eva leaves destruction in its wake.
The new one is more of my style, where the movements are more exaggerated, but the old one is actually really nice and gives that nice feel of a simple time enjoyer

@@gloryvampire3343 so the first movie 1.11 is a pretty accurate retelling of the first four episodes of the original series, up until this fight in 2.22 it's pretty to the original but then it goes in it's own direction - noticable difference in plot and events that occur

I really prefer the original version’s animation better. Just knowing it was all hand drawn and had a shoestring budget plays into the ending and it just makes everything grittier
TLDR: basically a rant about how the animation industry in general mistreats its talents.
Working on a "shoestring budget" I feel isn't something to be lauded on, feels like struggle pron to me
The work culture for these dudes even back then is pretty shit and it hasn't gotten that much better now. Don't get me wrong, pushing through insurmountable odds is a pretty commendable thing to do in most fields, but it just gives the bigwigs more incentive to do jackshit when it comes to helping animators just live because "passion" will get them through regardless.
Animators deserve be compensated with atleast livable wages especially when they create stuff as visually compelling as this, we're still a long way off though.

I love both of these so much!
One of the main reasons that I love the original is that it isn't afraid to take its time with things. From what I've seen, Evangelion has done this the best. They made the Evas have weight, like they were real. They followed through with movements. Each action has a counter action. The new one doesn't have this. When the Eva-1 was running up the mountain the foot stayed like it had to push the rest of the mech up, unlike the new one. The same thing with the landing, the old one stayed there to regain balance instead of just running off again

ya as much as I loved the remake (and didn't watch the original lol) the mech's movement felt a little light in that scene while the environment reacted properly to the weight, I thought maybe they wanted to make it feel a little more organic or something.
Mecha animation overall seems to be a rarer skill in modern animation, or maybe just too costly.

Well… it’s not a remake. I know it’s confusing but the rebuild series is more of a series of movies that reimagine the whole thing with each movie having a specific theme and message from Ano. 1.11 is the only genuine remake. 2.22 is fan service or how some fans wanted the girls to act. 3.33 is a mind fuck or how Ano wanted the series to be seen. 4.44 is a message from Ano to his fans. He basically tells you, “we had a good run. It was fun. Stop being a shut in and go outside.”

Newer version may look fancier, but it's the 94 version that gives me goosebumps to this day.

This show was so well crafted it amaze me even to this day. The staging and assembly and music, the sound desing. Everything is done with minutia and inspiration. Evanglion is an artistic gift
The new one actually proves just HOW good the old one really was. The scenes are literally identical and it can be argued better animated without that glitchy GCI look unnatural synthetic fluidity that looks like it’s skipping frames. Yet again just another example of they don’t make em like they used to 😔

They can't , because they did it with traditional cells and it's largely incompatible with the old footage , traditional cels are largely phase out and you can't buy that anymore in Japan. I knew this because I'm an animator who work for anime studios

The person in control of the channel had to chop up both moments so they matched, because the whole running to the enemy etc in the 2.2 version lasts way longer.
It doesn't " feel like " frames are chopped, they literally are, and not by the movie.
I really miss this anime in a nostalgic way. I wish i could rewatch and experience it all over again like the first time

I love the fluid motion of the 2.22, but the crisp lines of the debris in the 94 version give the scene with the AT field a whole new feel for the machine's power! Both look incredible in their own ways!

The Eva units got massively resized from the original.
The thing that og Eva makes better is the weight of the animation, just look at Asuka's fight in EOE and compared it to any of the fight sequences from the Rebuild movies.

Improved? Pls elaborate, its more hi def and fluid. But the angel redesign seems a lot more generic and less identifiable, the tramwork scene is basically inexistent, there is a lot more cheap digital particle work that obscured the meca design and seems a lot less dire with the neon green glow when 01 catches the angel. The shot with the eva the angel and the mountain is way less interesting because its not showing the thing from below its all like a drone aerial shot. I don't say its bad. But the original seems way better on a side to side comparison.

Watched the ‘94 version for the first time this year, it’s absolutely beautiful, it gives me a nostalgic and depressed vibe , the only flaw for me in the og version is the sound of the battles
from the artist point of view , i think they would agree that they outdid themselves than they did way back then. the old one doesnt look bad but the newer blows it out of the water , time and experience makes them better at their craft

Love 94's more serious type of animation and expresion, the angel looks mythical. Love 2.22 motion, that scene where they jump over the electric towers really feels like someone is filming it following from behind.
