Honestly, this feels like the only truly victorious scene in the whole anime. It remains untainted by the sorrow and pain that hangs over the rest of the show. With the usually gloom and loneliness that would hang over the end of the scene replaced by cheerful, almost comical banter. It's the perfect symbolization of the show's theme of loneliness, as once Asuka and Shinji break down the walls between them, and accept each other, they can actually go on to do great things, unbound by the limits their loneliness and self-doubt placed on them. It's a shame this feeling couldn't continue through the rest of the anime however, and Shinji's and Asuka's flaws slowly drag them back to their sad, lonely, broken selves.

@@chistinelane I don't agree that she suffered so much because of that. She was craving for actual affection from Shinji, which he was just not able to provide. She tried to articulate that, both when she was sleeping next to him and with the kiss, but Shinji was just totally paralysed out of fear to actually give her that affection, because of his troubled family relations. Shinji is at fault here, not people bringing them together. Even then Asuka's mental strength was not broken, but it was quite out of balance and that ultimately upset her even more, in a way blaming her own insufficiency in combat and emotions on her dependance on others, on Shinji, while loving him and wanting him to be there, she would not like to be needy, when she wasn't before meeting him. Angels becoming progressively stronger didn't help either. Neither did her period. By the time she was mentally violated by Arael that would be the final nail in the coffin, considering her childhood trauma and how she clearly is ashamed of herself to the point that she hates herself and hates others for not helping her, while generating even more self hatered for not letting others help her, because she is often too mean as a way of self protection, in similar way to how Shinji becomes paralysed and does literally >nothing< as his form of self protection. At their core, they are so similar and complement each other perfectly, if only they could open up and find happyness with each other and I am sure, given time and different circumstances, they would have. When Asuka is in coma, before the thing happens, Shinji has realised that he deeply cares for her and wants her to be back, so he can finally open up to her, but by then it is obviously too late. Her trauma and mental downward spiral had completely escalated before, when she ran away and Shinji only learned to open up when he met Kaworu, which happened after Asuka was gone. He had to kill his only friend at that point, Kaworu. Rei was not the same anymore, she previously gave her life to protect Shinji from Armisael and was replaced with a new clone. And this whole situation increased Shinji's guilt significantly, essentially blaming himself for the loss of everyone I just mentioned. With Asuka, at least there was a chance for her to wake up and for him to make things right, but yeah, we know how that ended and how he certainly felt even more guilty afterwards.
I love how a normal fun mecha battle which would be good but ultimately ignored in every other robot show is perceived as special and incredibly optimistic in Evangelion.

I always through they were throwing swords at 0:44, but they're actually some kind of energy weapon. The two poles land on either side of the angel forming a beam between them that slices the angel in half.
Interestingly, real main battle have a tank-phone outside the body sp accompanying infantry contact the crew inside. Must be used carefully unless you want squashed team mates
the version of "Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!" played during their synced battle is much more clear and sharp than other recordings I've heard. there's no overzealous reverb and GODDAMN SEX AT 1:29 with the timpani syncing right as 01/02 makes a direct hit. beautiful.
One of the things Evangelion did best (which there are many of) is its cinematic harmony with audio mixing. This shows from the very start with the opening intro. The way the visuals are synched to musical and audio queues is just heartwarming to me as an enthusiast.
Me : "What a happy and cute scene. Hope they got a happy ending in the e..." Anno : "Lol, my depression comes again. Guess all of them had to die". And everything goes downhill after this episode.
To be fair, the way production of a tv show works he didn't just get sad midway through and change the direction it was going. Coming up with the series after going through a 4 year period of depression he conceived it as a reflection on the anime industry and his work in it. The cheerier first half fading into more miserable conditions is supposed to reflect how in his life escapism only got him so far before it became clear that it wasn't enough to make him happy.
This was the most memorable episode for me, really just loved how synchronized they were, maybe it's because it's one of the few positive episodes in this series that it stood out from the rest.
It was probably the happiest episode in the whole franchise, everyone had a honest smile there, especially Asuka

the version of "Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!" played during their synced battle is much more clear and sharp than other recordings I've heard. there's no overzealous reverb and GODDAMN SEX AT 1:29 with the timpani syncing right as 01/02 makes a direct hit. beautiful.
It happens to someone else that they can't stop watching this scene and every day it shows up to them?
Same it appears in my recommended every day (and I wacht it again every day)
One of the things Evangelion did best (which there are many of) is its cinematic harmony with audio mixing. This shows from the very start with the opening intro. The way the visuals are synched to musical and audio queues is just heartwarming to me as an enthusiast.
62 seconds of absolute glory... And two minutes to undo all that teamwork like it meant nothing

Me : "What a happy and cute scene. Hope they got a happy ending in the e..."
Anno : "Lol, my depression comes again. Guess all of them had to die".
And everything goes downhill after this episode.
Amen to that.
