- The Xbox One SAD is now out to buy in stores and online. The Xbox One S All Digital Edition console removes the disc drive inside and lowers the MSRP by 50 dollars. The only issue is the Xbox One S is easily attainable online for nearly 200 dollars making the SAD edition console useless, so we might as well take it apart.

I just got one today with game pass annnnd gold live. I got Black ops 3 and Zombie chronicles combined for 19.99
Game Pass and weekly/seasonal sales are pretty good. I've built up my library over the years from buying up good games in the sales.
So they removed the disc drive but it's still over $200.00. Smh that is SAD
I mean it comes with 3 games, so the price is justified by it's still stupid that they forced in software so that couldn't sell it for cheap.
It's a shame they didn't even redesign the system. They could have called it the smallest Xbox yet.

When I first heard about it, I was hoping they would use the money they saved from not having a disc drive to get a bigger hard drive like 2TB or something. Since space is a little more important for a all digital system.

More important? ALL games need to be installed to your hard drive no matter if their installed by download or disc. Discs aren't even that useful anymore because most of it has to be downloaded anyways instead of being copied from disc because of patches.
@@Stevefhu Installing from disc is always faster, so where you'll probably need to set aside a good 2 hours to reinstall a game you have a physical copy of, it'll take likely triple that or longer if you have to download it all first. (Of course longer for particularly large patches but then that time is just added to the initial download) Secondly, if you have physical copies of old games that you don't have the space for, or the desire to play any longer, you can pawn or give them away.

I agree with you, but to be fair, a lot of my coworkers say they've long given up physical discs for movies. That said, if people are going to be giving up any chance of buying used games or borrowing from friends, you'd think you'd need a price much lower that $250 to justify the sacrifice.

Someone in another thread mentioned royalties that Microsoft has to pay for Blu-ray technology when they include the disc drive. It could have been a test or conditioning to keep people at the same price point for future systems that will have no disc players.
Think about it for a second. If the XBox One series in the future goes the route of having no disc drive, then technically the price of future XBoxes should drop significantly. I don't think Microsoft wants to drop pricing for year 2020+.
My theory is they are conditioning the public with the XBox One S (All Digital). By keeping it generally the same price as a regular XBox One S, they're trying to say the bulk of the consoles value is in the software itself. If they do this, future XBoxes that will be all digital will maintain high prices.
I'm fine with my Xbox One SAD. It's my second console, I also have a PS4. It might just be me but over the 5 years of having PS4 I noticed that most of my games were digital (only 4 non-digital). I guess it's just how some play

@@jonesOtr I think you are missing the point. XBOX ONE was the stupidest name ever because the "XBOX 1" was released in 2001! The numbered PS's were actually a good idea and have worked well. I am still surprised the VITA was not PSP2. The update files say "PSP2UPDAT.PUP" so it was obviously planned at some point. Going from XBOX, to XBOX 360 to XBOX ONE was just incredibly stupid.
EDIT: I forgot to say that the best thing the PS1, PS2 etc did, was standardise console names world wide. Since the PS1 and Saturn, everything was FINALLY called the same thing! No more MEGA DRIVE/Genesis or Super Nintendo/Super Famicom etc. The best thing was standardising the names AND the sys
tems. The Saturn had a fugly re-design for the west and don't even get me started on what they did to the pads! SO fucking glad I bought a Jp Saturn in March 1995!! The Dreamcast was almost there but then they changed from an orange swirl to a blue for the PAL version. Finally had the same cases world wide too. I hated the non Japanese DC cases with a passion. Especially the PAL ones. Again I bought a DC in 1998 so I did not have to worry about it. But thanks in some way to SONY, everything that came after was the exact same thing worldwide with no stupid changes.

Except Microsoft technically isn't charging more, it's still cheaper than MSRP of the normal One S, it's just that most places don't follow MSRP and are selling it for less which is out of Microsoft's hands. (MSRP is $299 for One S and $250 for One "SAD")
Just going by MSRP, this is actually a good deal, now we just gotta hope stores do the same "charge less than MSRP" tactic for this also meaning this could get below $200.

Real dollars are what matter, and right now you can get the same device with a tray at a lower price point EASILY. It's a pretty basic marketing concept. It came with battlefield 5, 1, and 1943. It was 210$ brand new. This means that at some point, that retailer still paid less than that to stock it, regardless of msrp. Presumably, the sad cuts production cost by at least 30 bucks. 200 is the ideal starting price. Especially so far from the holiday season.

It’s mostly because most people (including me) are already HYPED AS FUCK for the PS5, unlike for the digital Xbox One S, which wasn’t a new console, it was just a console exactly the same as the normal one, but 50$ cheaper and no disc drive, it’s pointless, and so will the PS5 digital edition if it doesn’t do one of these two things:
- If it is 100$ cheaper than the normal one
- If it comes with more storage

I've maybe used 2 game discs in a year and just stream all my movies so the disc drive is kind of useless for me and I'm sure for many others as well. With it sitting well below $200 rn seems like a pretty good entry point into xbox. Standard price is kind of meh, but at that sale price point its actually pretty solid value

This is why i got the digital ps5. Save £100 and i don’t buy many games so the savings on buying used discs would be minimal, and i still have my ps4 for playing the disc games for that. In fact as for ps5 games i’ve literally only bought gt7 and the rest are just free / discounted updates

I would much rather Consoles go all digital if it means the money saved on the disc drive could go towards boosting the performance a little or increase cooling. I understand the love of having a physical copy of the game, I still buy a lot of physical Switch games, but I feel like gaming as a whole would benefit from going digital. Mainly because developers would see more money for their games. No more used games that takes sales away from them. Maybe it would decreased the amount of microtransations. Remember the Online Pass that came only with new copies of BF3 back in the day? (Okay I know, companies like EA are greedy and will have microtransactions anyway, but I can dream). Plus, how is this an insult to customers? You still have the option to buy the version with a disc drive if you want, it's not like they suddenly took that away. I know I personally will pick up a "SAD" edition once they come down in price a little, because I am a Gamepass subscriber for a few of the PC games that they offer, but have yet to buy an Xbox. $250 is certainly too much, but they said that they aim to always be around $50 less than whatever the Xbox One S is. So if retailers are selling the S model for less than that already, than the SAD edition will be even cheaper.
Unfortunately, this is the future of consoles. Sucks too because I was considering buying a next-gen console, after primarily playing on PC, because my Internet sucks.

Is funny that people question the batteries... when they are removable, you don't have to buy a new controller when the batteries inevitably stop charging. I don't know many people that actually use AA batteries, most people just get charge packs that last quite long. Saves money in the long run.

I personally buy all my games digital so for me this is no problem. I own the xbox one s digital. And as for disc I find it an inconvenience to take out a disc and put a new one in everytime. I just download then switch games in my games and apps. No taking out disc or anything. Also digital games be going on sale now a days it seems more then used from gamestop. And you must remember most dont go to facebook marketplace and find used games. Fuck all that effort. I just download and play, nice and simple. And when it comes to watching movies and stuff I have an apple tv 4k for that or my fire tv cube I got. I dont need a disc tray. I get my movies digital.

@@Nakura-dj8mg I dislike the DRM that Sony has. If you have a digital game but are not connected to internet you cannot play that digital game but, physical games can still be played. Nintendo allows you to play Switch games offline while being digital so it's really convenient for the Switch at least.

@Azure Disk Agreed. 1 Terabyte is nothing these days! I had to get an extra 2 TBs of storage for my 500GB PS4 just to download update files, and I don't even have that many digital games on it!
Unfortunately there are no hard copies unless you’re talking about legacy 360/OG games. Most every Xbox One disc I’ve bought is just a glorified anti-theft device. You still end up having to download most of the game and few if any will play without day 1 patches. Buying a disc for Xbox One just makes you have to get up whenever you want to switch games. I prefer a physical copy too but if that’s the case you’re better off with a switch or PS4.

@@sage11x this is simply not true. **Almost** every game that's not always online will install off the disk and run the unpatched version just fine. There is no difference between the PS4 and Xbox in this way. Every game that runs offline on ps4 runs offline on Xbox as well. I know people who are in areas with no internet and they install almost everything with no problems. Even games with big day one patches will install and run the version of the game that's on the disk. It might have bugs that most people will never see but you can play them. There are exceptions of course. The Spyro remaster only installs one game, MK11 has areas tiny amount of content on the disk and anything like FO76 or Anthem won't work of course because they need to connect to servers. The vast majority of games are actually on disk though. Try it out. DC your console from the Internet and install some games. See what happens.

I just don’t get the point of this. I feel like people who have really good internet and greatly prefer downloading games are the kind of people to:
1) Utilize UHD Blu-Ray discs
2) Want an internal hard drive with more than 1 TB
So I’m not sure what kind of niche they’re reaching here.
NeonUprising yes a lot of all digital gamers still prefer physical movies to streaming them. And I know all the games have to be installed anyways... but since they took out that 4K drive they should’ve at least sprung for a 2tb hard drive.
I have really good internet and greatly prefer downloading games. I've never once used the blu ray drive in my X to watch a video on disc. Not even the UHD BRs it came with.
I'd think about getting a SAD as a second Xbox if I didn't already have an old Xbox One lying around. Which is what in think the niche is - second Xbox sitting somewhere other than the living room.

I honestly prefer controllers use AAs, eiser to replace once they stop holding a charge and you can always keep a pair sitting in your charger ready to go instead of bothering with a cable.
Agreed. My 360 rechargeable batteries died after ten or so years, AAs work perfectly everytime

I had a 360 rechargeable battery die within 6 months, at least you could swap it out for the AA battery holder.
Some people I’ve met got one of these for dirt cheap and are just using the ultimate game pass. They’re happy.

The aim of the game is to have the price be higher now so that when the holiday shopping rolls around people can pat themselves on the bat for saving $100+ during discounts. Buying it now is a stupid idea, but a Black Friday sale of $149.99 is going to push units.
But they could have made it somewhat attractive. By making it smaller, and with more storage space. they were so lazy with this, that they didn't even remove the eject button...
@@Expendable1986 yeah, I expected it to be smaller too, but they literally removed blue ray drive without redesigning housing, so there is a huge empty space inside. They even left eject button inside and it still functioning, lol. This is really cheap move.

When you look at the state of alot of old PS3 controllers in 2019, I applaud the ability to use standard AA batteries.

I think the only advantage to this would be a custom HDD mount and a flashed 3.5in drive. You could get a much larger drive at 7200 RPM maybe even a good SSHD to fit and still get system updates.

I actually love the fact that xbox still uses batteries so I dont have to worry about needing to charge them to use them wirelessly.

I think your right. Next gen will have two consoles released. One will be a cheaper disc-less version. The other will have the 4k player, enhanced graphics.

As my digital 360 games go backwards compatible they show up in the ready to install list, which is nice. Yet sadly there’s still games lost to time, like Scott Pilgrim...
