I bought a used/refurbished PS4 Pro from GameStop recently. Was as loud as a handheld vacuum cleaner. I opened it up and the motherboard was dirty and the heat sink has so much crud on it, I could peel it up and roll it up like a carpet. The thermal paste inside was ancient. I was told these refurbs were disassembled, cleaned, and whatever parts needed replacing, would have been replaced. It was absolutely filthy.

Great video. You are right, we have to be mindful when buying a used console. I just ordered a PS3 from amazon and received it this past monday. It looks fine on the outside and it works. But I notice the usb ports and the ports on the back was dirty. So since there's no warranty I opened it up. Boy was I glad I took it apart. It was filthy as HELL to put it nicely. The power supply vents were completely clogged up with brown yellow goops of dirt. With the exception of the mainboard, power supply, & Bluray player, everything else I had to wash with a water hose. After words I realize the inside parts smelled like a wet dog. Used soap and water. For the other 3 parts I pretty much get it a good brush cleaning. Even the thermal past was mostly gone. Luckily I put a new coat of thermal past. Now it runs brand new and much more quiet. Plus I upgraded the internal drive to 2TB. I also bought a 2nd used PS3 controller. It had a little battery life left and worked fine the first day. Left it charging over night, now it's completely dead. It won't hold a charge. It will work if I plug it into the PS3 with cable. So I'm returning it to GameStop today.

I’ve learned through the years that it doesn’t really matter much rather it’s new or used, you still are taking a risk of it not working with any electronic or console. I’ve bought new things that fail in a few days or just doa, and I’ve bought used consoles that I’ve used for years. It’s all a gamble.
$250 is quite high for a used base model PS4. PS4 Slims go on sale for $250 throughout the year and go down to $200 around the holidays with a pack-in game included. This should be $180 at the most.
Lol in 2017 I bought a refurbished 500gb ps4 on eBay for 190$ and it didn’t come with a controller... everything except the controller was there. I bought a controller for 43$ and I was good.
Thanks for the unboxing video, always nice to see how GameStop is doing with their used/refurbished systems. Could you do some from Best Buy, Amazon, etc. sometimes? Just curious how they handle given repairs as well.
I had gotten a refurbished PS4 PRO from GameStop and the systems memory hadn't been wiped so the previous owners games, PSN, Credit Card was all on the system still. It took it two and a half hours to wipe the system.
I used to repair XBox 360s and PS3s for a living and when we did reflows it worked for maybe a month before someone came back angry because their console was dead again. Gamestop used to actually come to us to reflow their consoles as well.
Got a PS4 pro from Gamestop yesterday. Since my regular PS4 doesn't read any disc. Luckily the PS4 Pro works. Came with all the cables. But the charger for the controller wasn't right for it. Other then that pretty good.
For Black Friday 2017 I got a PS4 Slim 1TB for $199.99. GameStop wants us to buy an older model refurbished and with half the hard drive space for a 25% increase in price. Go home, GameStop. You’re drunk.
I don't know why they put the word "premium" before refurbished because I bought an xbox 360 that was refurbished from them and when I got home I powered it on and it seemed to work just fine until I tried to put in a disc and play. The disc drive was completely broken and refused to read anything I put in it. Which literally tells me there's absolutely no meaningful quality check whatsoever. I had to take apart my old 360, salvage the optical drive from it, then solder the refurbished drive's board to the salvaged optical drive then reassemble the whole thing THEN it worked fine. Pretty sad that customers have to refurbish the console they just bought.
Word to the wise, if y'all ever want to pry open a console and handle the components of it like boards. At least wear ESD equipment when handling them. Your charges could set off the board components and fry it. Always wear latex gloves, smock, foot strap at least. Hell at least have ESD table mats too when working on electronic components. That will protect sensitive parts from being charged. Watching this is somewhat painful, but w/e I'm not the one messing with the refurbished PS4.
Happy Holidays Spawn Wave! thank your for the video, I really did enjoy the "inside look" at a PS4 system and mostly because I've been working to track down a PS4 system myself for the past year of 2022, and have yet to be successful at a New model, so I'm starting to compromise with myself and go for the refurbished vs. new as just a placeholder until I decide what to do, (I want a PlayStation & I want new.. but I can't afford new, so when you gotta game, you gotta game I suppose) Thanks for the insight. Happy Holidays!
This is actually a v2 version of DS4 (the one added to ps4 slim and pro), no wonder it's in nice condition. No way it was originally coupled with this PS4 though.
When I worked at GameStop I would try and steer people towards pre-owned instead of refurbished as well. Mostly because refurbished means it came in with an issue and was repaired vs a pre-owned that came in with zero issues. And like he said, it means we personally tested and cleaned it so we could vouch for it.
@@eduardorubalcava9367 Not an issue with mine at least. After I hit the dust with compressed air, it sounds the same as it did when I first played it. So quiet that I have to make sure that the fan is actually working. lol Anyway, the fins on that heatsink are so close together that dust can really choke airflow. Dust bunnies also build up around the fan as well. I live in a desert. Dust is life here. XD
@@SupertoastGT you shouldn't have to clean it that many times though. I've had mine since the midnight release of the original PS4 and have only had to spray it once. I would definitely try some new paste. It's super cheap to get some anyway.
If Gamestop are anything like GAME over here in the UK, the reason they were really pushing to sell you a refurbished console is due to the fact that GameStop will get a significantly better profit margin for each unit sold, it was so bad over here that you are judged by how many you sell leading to cut shifts if you fail to sell enough over new consoles
The thumb sticks don’t tear up easily anymore on the new version of PS4 controllers with the light bar in the front . They fixed that issue with them, that’s a new style controller
Hey man if you're out there I was hoping you could give me some advice... I'm wanting to get into fixing ps4's and Xboxes in my area... ant recommendations ob what equipment to buy? Type of soldering iron etc?
I got a refurbished PS4 slim about a month ago and so far its been great! The controller that it came with was broken, but they swapped it out immediately and I’ve had no issues since
That flashing blue light at the top of the touch pad, was that always there? I got my original ps4 controller and I got a gold controller and it doesn’t have that blue light there
I'm kinda glad I got the later original PS4 without the glossy plastic because my PS4 is under my PS3 and if it was glossy it would be scratched to hell.
This does quite seem like whoever brought it in just said "it's really loud" and there was no other problems. So once they dusted it and maybe that new compound, it was good to go.
I got a Xbox one x for $350 last week at gamestop the battlefield V edition and it honestly was a steal some of these are a good deal. I originally went in wanting a switch but I saw the X and had to go for it.
I'm not scared about dust, broken controllers, or small problems that won't effect my gameplay. I'm scared about the fact that this might only last for 1 month longer than my warranty lasts.
Any ideas as to why my PS4 model like this one won’t stay on? It’ll turn on and just beep and turn back off and won’t ever even give a display on screen. I’m not sure what it is and I want to get my data off of it
What kind screwdriver bit are you using to open it up? I wanna clean the dust out of mine but my bit (the star shaped one with the hole in the middle) won’t fit since it’s little bigger
I bought one of those refurbs from Gamestop and the controller was all beat up (had some of those eBay nubs on the sticks) and the unit itself only lasted a few months before I had to replace the internal fan.
Been a faithful follower since 2016 October'ish when you started covering news for the 'NX' and the channel was under 10k subs. I love how it's grown and garnered support. Best TH-camr on here. Grats Spawn (Jon), I'm very proud.
Players all over the world need new games, but do not need new machines. The pixels of the game are strong. Other players can never stop playing any games with new machines!
I got my PS4 refurbished/pre owned from GameStop as well and when I got it the fan was really really loud. I opened it up and cleaned it but it still made a very loud noise and even overheated. I tried to return it but they didn’t let me because I opened it up to clean it... so I had to get a new PS4 that wasn’t refurbished or used. :/ so at the end of the day DO NOT GET A USED OR REFURBISHED PS4 from GameStop. Save the money to buy a brand new one.
Wish I seen this sooner. I picked up one for my nephew cause he don't okay a lot but wants to on weekends. So I got him one for 229. They wanted to sell warranty that brought total to 289 and that's the price of a new slim at Walmart with tax. I declined. Soon as I brought home I opened it up and scuffed up really bad. The cover to access hard-drive was flopping around so loose. The controller was sticky and filled with gunk. And one the joy sticks was so loose it stayed in the down position. So I turned it on and instantly heard a grind noise and not even 1 min in it red light and powered off and wouldn't turn back on. So I called a different hardtop closer to me to turn it in and get new one. And after all said and done he exchange it for a brand new one for me at no cost. I didn't ask how or why I just accepted. I knew he felt horrible after hearing story then seeing the product another store gave me. And before I said what store it was he asked if was that store. So I guess they have a bad reputation. So now I have a fortnite code for vbucks and suit and don't play the game haha
@spawnwave So could you recommend any online places that do reballing I have a original Xbox 360 and a PS3 fat that are quite loud I haven't even turned them on in about a year or two maybe more because they were sounding so jet engine like. I've been afraid to take it anywhere locally do you have any places online you recommend sending it to?? Thanks

I honestly would not do business with GameStop, especially buy a used item from them but in my particular situation, I had no other choice. My PS4 launch edition was acting up and overheating so I went ahead and traded mine in (most money offered than other retailers) and they had a used Glacier White PS4 Pro that I wanted and no one else had one for sale. Used Glacier White Pro price $380, new black PS4 Pro $399.....yeah...

For Black Friday 2017 I got a PS4 Slim 1TB for $199.99.
GameStop wants us to buy an older model refurbished and with half the hard drive space for a 25% increase in price.
Go home, GameStop. You’re drunk.
I like the looks of the original ps4 better then the slim. Could always replace the hdd.
But it's not black friday 2017 right now...
Haven’t been to or used a GameStop in a while.. I usually stick to download or amazon nowadays and I’m honestly sad where GameStop has gone recently.
eh
Mine are good
This is infinite warfare " hope it doesn't eat it " lol that sarcasm was funny
I’m getting one for Christmas hope it works
Dang I'm still using my ps4 and controller that I got from 2014
Ps4 controll D pad is always getting stuck on mine and i buy a controller every year
I guess I got unlucky lol my controller's right analog stick is starting to ghost, and I've only had it for 5 months
@@legendaryoutcast4440 why? Just open it and clean it
@@legendaryoutcast4440 stop playing PS4 with sticky hands after masterbation
Word me too since 2014 just have a separate 2tb HD
Word to the wise, if y'all ever want to pry open a console and handle the components of it like boards. At least wear ESD equipment when handling them. Your charges could set off the board components and fry it. Always wear latex gloves, smock, foot strap at least. Hell at least have ESD table mats too when working on electronic components. That will protect sensitive parts from being charged. Watching this is somewhat painful, but w/e I'm not the one messing with the refurbished PS4.
Good advice
Congrats on 300k, I came when u were at 65k
Happy Holidays Spawn Wave!
thank your for the video, I really did enjoy the "inside look" at a PS4 system and mostly because I've been working to track down a PS4 system myself for the past year of 2022, and have yet to be successful at a New model, so I'm starting to compromise with myself and go for the refurbished vs. new as just a placeholder until I decide what to do, (I want a PlayStation & I want new.. but I can't afford new, so when you gotta game, you gotta game I suppose)
Thanks for the insight. Happy Holidays!
This is actually a v2 version of DS4 (the one added to ps4 slim and pro), no wonder it's in nice condition. No way it was originally coupled with this PS4 though.
The v2 version is sexy I like the light on the touchpad
I bought a 1TB Ps4 Slim with 2 controllers and 8 games for 250$ on OfferUP. It is practically brand new and makes me glad I decided to purchase.
When I worked at GameStop I would try and steer people towards pre-owned instead of refurbished as well. Mostly because refurbished means it came in with an issue and was repaired vs a pre-owned that came in with zero issues. And like he said, it means we personally tested and cleaned it so we could vouch for it.
If any dust gets in there, it sounds like a jet engine. I've cleaned mine like five times. #6 is due.
Have you tried applying new thermal paste? I have had a couple ps4s with that issue come in to my shop and that fixed the fan getting too loud.
@@eduardorubalcava9367 Not an issue with mine at least. After I hit the dust with compressed air, it sounds the same as it did when I first played it. So quiet that I have to make sure that the fan is actually working. lol
Anyway, the fins on that heatsink are so close together that dust can really choke airflow.
@@eduardorubalcava9367 I change the thermal paste on mine and clean it thoroughly but still sounds like a jet could it be something else ?
@@marionotmerio3686 do you clean off old thermal paste, and apply new
Every time you do one of these. I am more fascinated to take my consoles apart and fix them when I have to especially my old ones.
You mentioned the loose HDMI port, at least it wasn’t like the broken one My Mate Vince had, he had to replace the HDMI chip.
Is he a technician or soemthing now
Btw you can find dozens of ps4 for about $40-60 because the HDMI port needs replacing. Thats it.
Anyone else noticed YT is doubling down on ads?
They got tired of making little profit, it's annoying but i understand.
Congratulations on 300k. Been watching since like I think 50k ish. I remember you said we will see you shirtless like after you reach 100k
Did that actually happen?
@@volsavious2319 yeah I'm too lazy to go back in the vids. It was 1+ year ago so you can lol
Love the video! Love watching u and fix and clean systems. Thanks!
I got a refurbished PS4 slim about a month ago and so far its been great! The controller that it came with was broken, but they swapped it out immediately and I’ve had no issues since
Me: Hes going to say "I'll be back when that downloads"
Ps4: I'm a paid actor
That flashing blue light at the top of the touch pad, was that always there? I got my original ps4 controller and I got a gold controller and it doesn’t have that blue light there
do the slim and pro models suffer the same issues with a fragile hdmi port?
I'm kinda glad I got the later original PS4 without the glossy plastic because my PS4 is under my PS3 and if it was glossy it would be scratched to hell.
This does quite seem like whoever brought it in just said "it's really loud" and there was no other problems. So once they dusted it and maybe that new compound, it was good to go.
Do you know if i can get a refurbished/ green N64 anywhere?
Dealing with stuff from a smoker's home can be really gross don't know how anybody can put that shit into their lungs
and it seems like the only thing they did was clean it and stuff like light refurbishing it seems nothing was weird with it
They know which box to hand you from the back LOL
Everyone: Gamestop used ps4: 250$
Me: Game Mania used ps4: 289!!!! Sale!!!!!
Gamestop sells them for 150
I like game mania in my opinion.
That is a newer controller as it has the light showing up on the touch pad as well that is a new gen controller.
Buys refurbished anything.
My common sense:
BRUH
After two years I Bought about five ps4 controllers and I’m about to buy my sixth one. the durability of these controllers are fucking sad
$250 is a LOT for a refurbished PS4 system. Other than that, it does look really good.
You'd be better off spending an extra $50 for a new one
@Jonathan Soko oh yeah buying a current gen console is a super smart thing to do in such a situation. Think about that one.
It is really a lot when they have sold new PS4 Slims for 199 in the past...
And probably will sell them once again at that price.
Any ideas as to why my PS4 model like this one won’t stay on? It’ll turn on and just beep and turn back off and won’t ever even give a display on screen. I’m not sure what it is and I want to get my data off of it
i felt myself make a visibly uncomfortable face at 14:00
That description of a HDMI cable being wrapped while still plugged in made me physically cringe.
What kind screwdriver bit are you using to open it up? I wanna clean the dust out of mine but my bit (the star shaped one with the hole in the middle) won’t fit since it’s little bigger
I got a refurbished PS4 from GameStop when I went to turn it on it blew up and I got a cut from a piece that flew at my arm
What do you mean like it exploded like a bomb or broke off
I bought one of those refurbs from Gamestop and the controller was all beat up (had some of those eBay nubs on the sticks) and the unit itself only lasted a few months before I had to replace the internal fan.
Can’t tell what surprises you, your face never changes.
Wow $250 USD. I paid $450 cad after taxes for a new pro November 2017 at eb games with horizon zero Dawn.
@spawnwave
So could you recommend any online places that do reballing I have a original Xbox 360 and a PS3 fat that are quite loud I haven't even turned them on in about a year or two maybe more because they were sounding so jet engine like. I've been afraid to take it anywhere locally do you have any places online you recommend sending it to?? Thanks
SWM what do you use to hold the boxes on the wall?
GameStop ripped me off yesterday ,so I bought super smash Bros ultimate and a GameCube controller adapter and they sold it to me for $20 and there was a sticker under the price tag sticker saying it was $15
i bought a refurbished wii at gamestop
Now it’s emulating GC games
Congrats on 300k been watching since 20k
maybe they used the white thermal paste because is cheaper
I honestly would not do business with GameStop, especially buy a used item from them but in my particular situation, I had no other choice. My PS4 launch edition was acting up and overheating so I went ahead and traded mine in (most money offered than other retailers) and they had a used Glacier White PS4 Pro that I wanted and no one else had one for sale. Used Glacier White Pro price $380, new black PS4 Pro $399.....yeah...
Iv bought several used and refurbished systems from gamestop and almost never have any problems with them.
b&g gaming & more my biggest fear is roach motels.
you don’t save that much buying refurbished but i’m glad to see people aren’t getting lazy with the repairs.
If your ps4 over heats all the time what can you do?
i am getting ps4 pro 1 tb , used , should i surprise myself?
